Other practice notes, 12/19

Hey everyone. I'm going to hustle through these. I'm still here at Auburn and I need to get home!

  • Ben Tate and Antonio Coleman were selected to participate in the Senior Bowl. That means they're considered two of the better NFL prospects out there and this will give them exposure to NFL scouts.

Asked what he wants to accomplish in Mobile, Tate said: ``Just me as a person, you know, I think I have pretty good character. And also to show them that I'm the No. 1 senior running back in the country."

  • A total of eight football players (six current, two former) earned degrees at winter graduation Friday afternoon.

Current players: LB Craig Stevens, S Zac Etheridge, WR John Cubelic, OL Darrell Roseman, WR Tim Hawthorne and holder Clayton Crofoot.

Former players: OL Jeno James, DB Montae Pitts.

Chizik on Pitts: ``I called Montae last summer when I got here and told him, ‘No excuses, no anything, get back into school and graduate.’ And I’m just really, really excited to hear that he did that today. Just proud of him and he wasn’t the only one."

  • Chizik said Eric Smith is the only player who ran into academic problems. ``Everyone else is on good academic standing."

  • Coleman said he was skeptical about Hot Carter's revelation Wednesday that he plans to remove the "HOT BOY" tattoo from his face. ``I've heard that one before," Coleman said with a laugh. ``I'll believe it when I see it."

  • OL Andrew McCain on the players' schedule now that school is out: ``That's kind of a Catch-22 because it's nice not to have to worry about classes, but when we're not in classes they get to keep us up here all day long. So it's good because you get to focus on football and we are up here a lot, so you tend to be worn out at the end of the day."

  • LB Joshua Bynes on playing (almost) every snap this season: ``I did it for a season and a half ... so far. I've done it for 20 games straight. I just love being out there. Players are very dependent on me. When I'm on the field, they look for me. When I'm in high spirits and think things are going well, they're going to be in the same situation. They'll look at me. A lot of players look for me to handle that role."

RB Tate seems to be getting a bit too cocky. I wish him well, but he needs to stay humble. I am sure the NFL is a completely different environment. Many college stars turn into spectators when they head to the NFL.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Andre Ware "Rutgers only gives up 82 yards rushing on the ground."

I guess they give up most of their rushing yards through the air.

Blogger Unknown said...

Mark, Eric Smith is still on the team. He just apparently didn't make the grades to play. That won't get you booted off the team. Hopefully the kid is getting his head straight. Bad grades cost you playing time, but they don't get you kicked off the team. Punch one more guy in a parking lot and he might as well just pack his bags.

8:33 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I like Ben Tate, but my uneducated opinion is that he won't be lighting up the NFL and may be lucky to make a roster. I hope I'm very very wrong.

Congrats to all the grad, but especially to Jeno and Montae!!! Well done, gentlemen!!!!!!!!

THT, I don't know which of us it is, but I believe one of us may be intoxicated.

8:34 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

THT, in today's game, RBs can make the roster in a number of capacities. If he can prove he can catch out of the backfield and runs a good 40, he will get drafted on the first day and make a roster.

My guess is that Tate makes a roster but isn't a star runningback in the NFL. I think his versatility and durability will take him a ways, but he isn't a Ronnie, Caddy, or Rudy.

From LA Times (and just reported on the deuce):

Junior tailback McKnight, the Trojans' leading rusher, has been driving an SUV owned by a Santa Monica businessman, a possible violation of NCAA rules.

8:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Somehow it seems that USC wouldn't get in trouble with the NCAA if they turned the recruiting violations into a reality TV show. Nothing seems to stick to them.

8:44 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

the only reason that's a "possible" violation and not an obvious violation?

USC

8:45 PM

So, did Lane Kiffikin leave USC because they didn't live up to his standards, or was it that his training was finished?

I am watching the Division I championshhip game between Montana and Villanova. It kind of makes me wonder if there is any talk in Division I of switching from a playoff system to a bowl system. I mean, that is how the big boys do it, right?

I confess, I have never seen Rock City, Ruby Falls, or Lookout Mtn. I've been to Chattanooga 3 times, each very briefly. Once for job interview, once to buy a car (saved a few thousand vs buying in jawja), and once as Santa Claus to pick up a 5 week old Molly pup.

Random tidbit....

Lookout Mountain actually ends in Gadsden. You can drive all the way to Chattanooga from Gadsden and never leave Lookout Mountain.

Useless information you didn't need to know...

9:13 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm biased as a Noogan, but I think Lookout Mountain and its attractions hold their own distinctive charm. Point Park (the Civil War Park for the Battle of Lookout Mountain) is cool as well.

We also have the Tennessee Aquarium, the Walnut Street Bridge, other Tennessee River locale attractions.

Live it! Love it! It's Chattanooga!

9:15 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

map freaks know that. I've admired it several times on google maps satellite view. Yes, I'm that nerdy.

Reminds me , just yesterday I was looking at the Anniston Ammo depot on the satellite view. That looks really weird, all those little "earth huts" out in the woods.

anyone here pulling for Montana?

I don't have anything against them, but II usually pull for the underdog if I don't have any other reason to pick sides. Plus Villanova is in blue. I like blue.

9:23 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I marched in the opening parade for the aquarium in 91 or 92 as a fourth grader.

My entire class dressed up as red salmon. Fun was had by all.

9:24 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

That's a not-for-profit attraction just like the aquarium, right?

9:25 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm kind of impartial to Montana myself. They always bring good numbers to Chattanooga given the distance they have to travel. Enjoy the setup they have out there.

Nova's taking control of this game, though.

2. The drive between Fakerville and the 'Noog is a beautiful one.

3. Perfect practice makes perfect.

4. I'm sure you want to know: at the anniversary plus one day dinner, Mrs. Jet had the lobster bisque and the swordfish with sun dried tomatoes, capers and olive oil. I had the fried oyster salad and the surf and turf (small filet and lobster). We were quite pleased.

Been a fan of Nova since Aldo Nova cranked out "Fantasy" in 1982.

My doppelganger Rollie Massimino won a national title with Nova in 1985.

Ex-Nova DL and Chevy pitchman Howie Long played in the Blue-Gray Game in the Gump after his collegiate playing days.

Mark, thanks for that comment.

Btw, seeing your admiration of Bynes, I'll trade him for McClain, just for the bowl games. It's the least I could do for another Hottie.

We're taking the inlaws to the Noog Aquarium next week. I like it much better than the commercialized Atl Aquarium.

One of our partner's family owns Ruby Falls on Lookout Mtn. I've had passes to go for years but have yet to go.

Did sign a good score card and win some cash playing at that golf course up on Lookout Mtn several years ago.

Oh, I get it. The Montana coach is Amish. They're morally opposed to timeouts.

9:53 PM

well, now I know why App State lost in the blizzard last week in Missoula... they didn't wear all blue unis. Never mind that their colors are black & gold.

That's why they kept the timeouts. T

Montana's coach apparently can see the future. What kind of defense was Nova playing there, though?

You can't, CAN'T give up a long touchdown in that situation.

10:00 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

even if they don't, he can still stop the clock 3 times.

Hmmm... maybe we were a bit quick with our coach critique?

Good to see some AU players invited to the Sr Bowl. Mid-season, I thought Todd had a chance at an invite; he let that slip away after the TN game.

Lots of ink around about Adams getting left off the all-sec teams, and lots more about all the All-Americans uat has this year. Congrats to them, they all deserved it, except one. Looks to me like kickers ought to be very easy to evaluate. You have their stats right in front of you, and what else matters on a kicker? The kick is good or its not good. Do they give them style points, or is there something else I'm missing?

Tiffin - 29-33 on fg for 88%; 38-41 on xp for 93%; total - 92%.

Byrum - 14-15 on fg for 93%; 49-49 on xp for 100%; total - 98%.

Rewards - Tiffin - All-American.
Byrum - nothing.

Maybe Tiffin boomed a bunch of long fg? Nope, long of 50, Byrum had a long of 49.

Could someone explain the logic used in selecting the all-sec and all-american kicker? If Byrum had made the one kick that he missed and been perfect on the year, would it have mattered?

A good day to all.

Good luck to 2.0. It's just as well if she didn't get out of Florence. Nothing flying in the Mid Atlantic before midday tomorrow at the earliest. 6-7 inches down in DC with the heaviest snow expected this afternoon. 12-24 total expected.

I need to get some packages in the mail today. Fortunately, the post office is walking distance.

Good Saturday morning, Hotties! War Eagle!

Tar Heel, safe travels to 2.0 whenever she gets to leave. Please keep us updated.

Coosa, I have an answer... Leigh Ann Tiffin plays for The Tahd and AU always get the shaft.

NOVA, I'm sure you're not happy about it, but I am so jealous. I miss the snow. I've lived in Bham for 11 years and it's only snowed 4 times and each of those times was only a dusting and was gone by noon.

7:14 AM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Yeah, Luv, this is one of the times I miss living in Cincinnati. I grew up in AL where snow was very infrequent.

The first time it snowed in Cincinnati we ran outside, looking up in the sky, yelling "it's snowing, it's snowing!" Our neighbors thought we were crazy. We had to rush off and buy boots, gloves, hats, snow shovels and sleds. Fun times! But too far from Auburn!

7:18 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

We call that polite snow. It visits for a few hours, makes things pretty and is gone by dinner.

I'm snug in a warm apartment watching the storm. Shoveling is someone else's problem. If the buses are running tomorrow, I'll probably head over to the National Mall and take some storm pictures.
