All we have are the embers

Hey everyone. Our 100-minute Video Campfire® has ended. I'd say it was a success.

We had approximately 500 unique viewers. We averaged 83 viewers at any given moment. I was aiming for 40 viewers total, so I'd say that qualifies as a success.

What we need to do now is make suggestions on how to improve it.

Here are some things we discussed in the Campfire. Add more in the comments section and I'll post 'em here.

*Stop the refresh on the main blog because it messes up the stream.
*Images/video/links can't be posted in the chat.
*(Some) questions gathered before the VC begins.
*"Tape" the segment for later playback (**I have this one solved already.**)

IN OTHER NEWS:
Here's what the Outback Bowl had to say via Twitter -- ``ESPN announced that the Outback Bowl overtime thriller with the Wildcats and Tigers posted a 4.06 national television rating. This is a 32% increase from last year's game. Thanks for watching this instant classic!"

  1. Great video substance, JGT

  2. I'm slow with a busted shoulder

    ReplyDelete
  3. That's a THT trifecta there.

    ReplyDelete
  4. i liked what i saw between the mandatory thing called work

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think the man is going to keep me from doing the chat portion. It kept erroring out. JGT were you reading the comments or the chat?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I liked what I saw when I should have been working. I guess I made it optional for most of the chat.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I was not able to post to the chat ... even after I registered with UStream. I guess I have a weak UStream.

    ReplyDelete
  8. There's probably a prescription available for that, Jet. You could even invent one..."Jetstream".

    ReplyDelete
  9. from the Outback Bowl Facebook page:

ESPN announced that the Outback Bowl overtime thriller with the Wildcats and Tigers posted a 4.06 national television rating. This is a 32% increase from last year's game. Thanks for watching this instant classic!

    Suck on that Tennessee.

    ReplyDelete
  10. how about streaming the basketball games that arent on tv!

    ReplyDelete
  11. that was a whole lot of fun, JGT. Maybe you can roll the official HABOTN tree before you start the next one.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I am always a day late and a dollar short!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Tommyd: I was reading questions off the chat.

I'm sorry some of you were having trouble with it. Maybe we'll run a night-time version later this week when (most of) you are home ... and see if it's just The Man keeping you down at work.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thanks, PF. I posted that to Le Blog.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I saw a message to the effect "Cannot connect to Chat, please try again later". I tried it on my usual browser Chrome as well as IE 8 and had the same issue. But, I was able to watch and listen right along. It was cool.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Norm, that's because you're cooler than the other side of the pillow.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Same deal with me, Norm.

Heres a crazy idea... chatroll + ustream? Any takers?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jet - not only that, I'm also cooler than Billy Dee Williams.

    So says Norm.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Mike, sounds like you just suck at ustream. Try again next time, buddy. You'll get it eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 5:30ish in the ATL and I've been at this desk since 7ish. I'm taking it to the house. Check you later in the pm.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sooo we can see Jay fake laughing at your jokes, but he can't see you right?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jay, I may have missed this in the live chat, but what is your view on Etheridge? Will he be back?

Loved the video campfire. It shocked me to suddenly have Jay G. staring me in the face on my monitor. Kudos.

As for improving it, getting the list of questions upfront might be good, say in the blog here prior to it starting.

The only negative I see is that it doesn't document your answers for others to review later. Maybe Michael the mad live blog blogger would like to get involved to eleviate that if his paraphrasing is okay with you:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. OK, guys, Jay G won't be here tonight, so let's a take a bunch of hideous 3s, commit a boatload of stupid fouls, and shoot free throws like that blind cowbell girl from the Boise State band.

I think we can lose another one since HABOTN Dude won't be here. No one will ever know.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You don't suppose Jay was actually able to see us too, do you? I mean it could be a homeland security think and the bush administration had hidden cameras installed in every monitor and they have a special agency that watches people setting at computers and flags anyone wearing a turban as a possible terrorist, or maybe I am paranoid?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Michael ... that could work.

I'm not bethrothed to UStream's chat widget.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jet, could you clarify how that is different than when Jay is at the games?

    ReplyDelete
  27. A list of questions gathered ahead of time is a great idea. We'll do that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anonymous4:35 PM

Harrison, didn't see any JG fake laffing, but he did exhibit cold shark-eyes when swinging the banhammer 3 seperate times.

    ReplyDelete
  29. but, where does that leave us off the cuff guys? I can't prepare in advance for a chat. My questions need to just come to me naturally in my flow.

    ReplyDelete
  30. PF, you have license to freestyle.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous4:38 PM

Jet ..sadly your BBall coaching philosophy seems familiar on the Plains right now.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The other improvements I can see is how the video chat begins and ends. Maybe have an Auburn logo on the screen first accompanied by that Elvis entrance music.

As for closing, if Ted Roof has the time to drop by and close the show, that would work.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was never able to see the commentary, either on the blog or at Ustream. Kept saying it could connect to the server. The video was fine, though.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Etheridge ... my guess is that he won't be back, but that's not based on any facts. That was a bad injury. He's still in the neck brace. I think he's lucky to be OK and, well, I wouldn't feel comfortable "doubling down" after a situation like that.

    Maybe he feels differently.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lebo or not, can't see ol' Roy taking his team on the road for a non-conference game to a lesser opponent after last night's debacle. So we need to find another potential oppponent to open the arena.

Ol' Roy took the team to Charleston on Saturday for a little R&R, then got their butts kicked last night.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That is what I was thinking with Etheridge, Jay. He has had that neck brace on for a long time. It kind of reminds me of the Protho situation. Some thought he just broke his leg and would be back next season. Some injuries are so easy to fix. I just hope Etheridge does whatever is best for him, but I am assuming we cannot count on him being available.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Auburn needs to get creative with it's basketball program. I hear that Monday Night Raw has a guest host every week. How about we just have a guest head coach every week for men's basketball. Sure, there might be a bit of a consistency problem, but none of the coaches would be around long enough to get bashed too terribly bad.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Another good idea, SFC.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I say we get real creative and recruit players and win games, but that's just me. I'm nuts

    ReplyDelete
  40. Just thinking outside the box. If you ask Michael, I bet the box was actually constructed by puppets.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Puppets fear boxes, steve. They have nightmares about Captain Boxhead regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Harrison, please stop your ridiculous ideas. They're not welcome here.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Forgot that the cornpone bowl is tonight. Could we become the Hottest Georgia Tech Blog On the Net for just one night?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Missed the live stream, but I just read on the ITAT Football Forum that it sucked, which means that it must have been pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  45. sorry. that's how i got kicked out of communist china too

    ReplyDelete
  46. Michael, how do you feel about live blogging Jay's video blogs so we will have documentation of what he said? Are you up for it?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't know Steve. Jay hasn't even started paying me for all the other live blogging I have been doing. Luckily, Kristina hasn't been around to collect her wages recently, so I am not currently bankrupt or anything.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh, ITAT said it was terrible?

WOW. Now I know it kicked ass!

I personally would love to see Mark Murphy get on live video and show himself. I'd tape that.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Steve, I can "tape" the segments for future playback. MJT could just watch those and ... wouldn't need to blog at all.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes, you are cutting edge Jay. We didn't throw you any softballs, of course there we no differential equations questions either, so I think it was fair.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Jay G Tate vs Mark Murphy in UStremed race across the front lawn. Tripping allowed.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That would be awesome, Jay. I hated I had to miss half of the thing, but if I don't work occasionally, they might not pay me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I wouldn't fight Mark. He's so much older than me. I respect my elders.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I only fight the elderly and females smaller than me. I have to know i can win, and not get punched too hard

    ReplyDelete
  55. Bear in mind, I said the ITAT Football Forum said it sucked. That's the garden variety Interwebbed fans who are too cheap to pony up for a paid subscription.

Don't know if Murphy had any comment. 'Cause, I'm like, too cheap to pony up for a paid subscription.

    ReplyDelete
  56. i got the goat at 3:2 Michael

    ReplyDelete
  57. Freep -- so does that mean you're bursting my bubble? Dammit.

I wanted SUBSCRIBERS to rip me!

    ReplyDelete
  58. What if I told you the goat was sickly, had only three legs, and was named "Chester"?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Known to his friends as Chest Rockwell.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I know not to fight MrsTHT. She would kick my buttockal region

    ReplyDelete
  61. Was it the famous fightin goat "Chester the people molester" ? If so, then it's even money.

    ReplyDelete
  62. but the other goat is named BEVO.

    Hook 'em Horns!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yeah Harrison, that's him. Another goat, Edgar the Goat-De-Legger permanently injured him in his last match. He's only got three legs now. I can take him!

And Jay, I don't think Chester really has any friends. He's a bit of a loner. A loose canon. He wasn't out to make friends.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well, if it's any consolation, the guy who started the thread (entitled "Jay G. Tate - OMG") appears to be a subscriber.

The one with the most brutal comments is a poster with the handle "jtate002". Coincidence?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Could Jay be flaming his own blog to attract attention? Has he taken up the Kiffikin mantra that any attention is good attention?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't think I've ever bought any Bud's Best cookies, but now I know I never will. I just saw a commercial with Bud himself and whole bunch of people standing behind him. He said(and I'm paraphrasing),"I would like to congratulate the Alabama Crimson Tide on their Championship season...On Jan. 7 we will watch Alabama's football team cream the Texas Longhorns and become the National Champions..." Then he and everyone behind him yelled, "RTR!"

    UGH, it made me sick.

    HOOK 'EM HORNS!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I saw on front page where you mentioned 'taping' the segments. Is it possible to go back and see what we missed?

    ReplyDelete
  68. wow did i really miss a rare campfire?

    ReplyDelete
  69. jhag, not only a campfire, but a video campfire. Live streaming Jay on your computer. You can't beat it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I really need to stop watching local news too. Yesterday, on ABC 33/40, Mike Raita and Jeff Speegle were broadcasting from Pasadena. They were like little schoolgirls they were so giddy. They had Finebum on and he was talking about next year's "two-peat."

UGH...I just don't know how I'm going to be able to live here if UAT wins.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Who would flame himself on ITAT?

    ReplyDelete
  72. I don't read the ITAT boards. Seriously. Never. I don't subscribe. I haven't. I won't. Couldn't read it if I wanted to read it.

I really like Jason Caldwell, though.

    ReplyDelete
  73. one thing about AU, except for two games they've all been exciting win or lose. or as in the obb, win, win again, win again, and finally win for good.

    ReplyDelete
  74. let's go heckle bud's cookies in their website's comments section if they have one. they may think a website is that back room with all the spiderwebs in it. they are bammers after all...

    suck it bud's
& suck it clutch & powertrain mobile, al speaking of over the top bammer sponsors.

    ReplyDelete
  75. it's not a two-peat, it's a repeat. you don't start making up words and adding numbers until three-peat. Stupid Finebaum.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I know I am still new to this blog so I don't know if I have earned the right to ask about improvements. With that said I'm going to anyways. Would it be possible to set up the blog so that we don't have to refresh any blog? If that can't be done then maybe it could be set up so that each post is numbered for easy reference later. Any thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  77. You need to give me more.

Describe the problem first. Do you get confused about which blogs are new?

    ReplyDelete
  78. CH=B, I do not believe that is possible with the blogger interface. Numbered comments would be cool, though.

Now, to get serious. Die Cornpones, Die!!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. SEC Officials? Are they trying to punish GT or Iowa?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Anonymous7:34 PM

    Jay...

Wish you were live blogging the Nick Saban show tonight....There are some idiots on here tonight..

First guy up...coach tell us about the time zone difference.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Julio Jones sure as heck ain't no...

    ReplyDelete
  82. Last BCS game on FOX for at least four years (and hopefully ever) in the Orange Bowl tonight.

    Woo-hoo!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Flame-terbation.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Georgia Tech is gettin' corn- ... never mind.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Auburn up 12 at half on West Georgia.

    Anybody care?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Thanks, Coach L-Ebro

    ReplyDelete
  87. Anonymous8:01 PM

The Orange Bowl is my least favorite of the BCS bowls.

    I don't know why...

    ReplyDelete
  88. hate i missed that but i always do.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Maybe it's memories of Johnny Rodgers, FSJ.

    ReplyDelete
  90. How is everyone? Love the new video campfire hate that i missed that but the wifey was droppin the hammer tonight

    ReplyDelete
  91. Chris Low's written more stories from Newport Beach, California than it seems like he's done all year. Freakin' Bammer.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Faker...probably has something to do with the teams that play in them. Including this year, here are the last four Orange Bowls:

2010 - Georgia Tech vs Iowa
2009 - Virginia Tech vs Cincy
2008 - Kansas vs Virginia Tech
2007 - Louisville vs Wake Forest

    Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  93. The yellow hammer...hate the yellow hammer. Quick question everyone...Should i go watch the bama game on thursday with the wifey adn a bunch of bammers or do i sit in silince and cheer on the burnt orange from home alone.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Anonymous8:06 PM

    Maybe so Jet...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Anonymous8:08 PM

    E-Bro...

    That is a terrible lineup.

The BCS has ruined the bowl season, IMO. Most BCS bowl games blow.

    ReplyDelete
  96. That Orange Bowl lineup would probably be the same with or without the BCS. The conference tie-ins are the same as right before the BCS, aren't they?

    ReplyDelete
  97. atltiger...will there be an embargo on cheering for Texas at the party? If so, stay away.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Not the same, but still terrible. It would be GT vs Cincy this year, and that Kansas game would've been Louisville or something.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Dear Brother ATL ...

In these times, I turn to the Good Book for guidance.

“By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.” (Hebrews 11:24-25)

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

I trust you have your answer.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Got something for the agnostics, Jet?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Thanks Jet. That is the answer i was going for. There will be definatly and embargo. I will not be attending the red elephant club of atlanta on thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I have been and it is awful. I have never seeen so much houndstooth in all of my life. You would think that the school colors are black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Auburn only had a single digit over West Georgia a moment ago.

For some context, West Georgia is only a Division II school.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Ebro ...

    Hook 'em Horns.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Is Newt Gingrich still coaching at West Georgia?

    ReplyDelete
  106. atltiger...you have chosen wisely.

    ReplyDelete
  107. So what happens when Texas beats the pants off Bama and makes them like it?

    ReplyDelete
  108. I might meet the naighbor of mine with texas flag flying just so i can watch the game with him.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Anonymous8:27 PM

Favorite question from Saban's call in show..

"Coach..I know you are a serious guy, but where is the party gonna be after we beat Texas' ass?"

    ReplyDelete
  110. My Texas shirt is already pressed and folded for Thursday night.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Is it that the ACC really sucks this year or is the big 10 getting better? I think the first statement.

    ReplyDelete
  112. With that kind of attitude, if Bama loses on Thursday, I guess the Bama fan base will get another scolding from Saban for not taking the bowl game seriously and having it affect the team.

    ReplyDelete
  113. THey will be jumping off Denny Chimes if they dont win thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  114. ATL ...

Iowa is a bad matchup for Tech. Iowa has a very vanilla defensive philosophy that is well equipped to deal with the option.

    ReplyDelete
  115. When's the last time the Big Ten won two BCS bowl games in a year? Has it ever happened?

    ReplyDelete
  116. I like Georgia Tech tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Jay G hope your right. Atlanta will be somber tomorrow if not.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I really dont think that that ACC is very good at all. Clemson losing to USC and then UGA beating Tech on the same weekend is proof enough.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Mr. Ferentz the NFL is calling

    ReplyDelete
  120. be back in a bit Peanut Butter Oreo and milk time

    ReplyDelete
  121. Here's a thought: Tech is lucky tobe donw by a touchdown. If they can hold Iowa to 14-7 at half, then that would be a positive.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Off topic but i do love the new resealable pack for oreos as it keeps them very fresh.

    ReplyDelete
  123. ATL ... Oreos are not off topic.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Iowa Yds - 256
    GT - 31

    ReplyDelete
  125. JayG-Really liked the campfire today. Could not stay for the whole thing but it was a step up from the previuos campfires.

    ReplyDelete
  126. G-sorry for the late reply. I do not get confused with which blogs are new. I think it would be nice for it to be a live stream so that you don't have to refresh. May not be possible, but the numbering of the post should be fairly easy if supported by blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  127. SO AU wins by 24 over a D II school.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Did anyone notice on the 1st extra point for Iowa that the GT player was on the ground sliding and hit the planted foot of the kicker? Just as in the Au/NW game the kickers ankle rolled and he fell down, but there wasn't a call. I will forever believe that the refs and the announcers wanted NW to win that game.

    ReplyDelete
  129. WTC-after seeing some basketball this year I will take any win we can get. Just last night UNC lost to College of Charleston.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Parity in college basketball.

    Gotta love it.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Kool and the Gang!

With the grandson of the original lead singer fronting the band!

    ReplyDelete
  132. College of Charleston is Division I and has a (soon-to-be) Hall of Fame coach on the sideline.

    West Georgia? None of that.

    ReplyDelete
  133. As far as the bammer/UT game. You all know very well what the bammers will say on Friday if they lose. "Well at least we were playing for the championship." I almost always root for the SEC but no part of me could ever root for UA. It's not the program that I hate but the fan base. I would say 85% only know bama football because momma and daddy rooted for them. They never went to school there nor can they even spell school.

    ReplyDelete
  134. whatcha gonna do...gonna get up?

    ReplyDelete
  135. Jay G, don't you go raining on our hoops parade.

    ReplyDelete
  136. About time to play "Celebration" then catch the van back to the Home.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Lets face it. Auburn just isn't good at basketball. As much as I wanted Lebo to be the coach, it's not going to happen. We just spent 80+mil on a new arena it's time to go spend 2mil on someone who can win in it.

    ReplyDelete
  138. LOve it. yaaaa hooooooooooooo

    ReplyDelete
  139. Yeah, my parity comment was geared towards the UNC-CofC game, not Auburn-West Georgia.

No reason that game should have been single digits in the second half. Conference play is about to start and there will be no more hiding.

Start out with SC at home (winnable) before going to Knoxville (uh-oh) on Wednesday in front of a national television audience on ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Im gonna be celebrating burnt orange on thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Anonymous9:08 PM

    Blue Bell Cookies-n-Cream

    ReplyDelete
  142. actually the UT game is now winnable since all of their players are smoking pot and carrying guns.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Anonymous9:08 PM

    CH=B,

I didn't know that it was a requirement to actually attend the school you are a fan of....

If that were the case there are a few Auburn fans on this particular blog that would not be allowed.

My thought is that both schools are taxpayer funded institutions. Therefore, anybody can be a fan.

    ReplyDelete
  144. edys slow churned moose tracks

    ReplyDelete
  145. who do they think they are...Gilbert Arenas

    ReplyDelete
  146. bama has what we call....Dirt Road alum.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Y'all are killing me. Eating ice cream and I am eating an orange! Started back exercising and I've gained a pound. GROAN!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  148. I do love Kool and the Gang, though.

    ReplyDelete
  149. FSJ- I knew after I said that someone would counter. I understand. My mom is an AU fan and never went to college, so you are correct it is not a required. I guess what I ment was most Bama fans I know only know Bama football. They don't know any other football. They also don't care about the university.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Says the guy that didn't go to Bammer.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Anonymous9:11 PM

    atlanta...

Just noticed your avatar. That rant by O'Reilly is a youtube classic.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Anonymous9:11 PM

    Don't give up CT

    ReplyDelete
  153. I used to do the "im going to lose weight for new years" then about week 5 of the new diest the ice cream would screaming my name. Now i just do a pracitcal new years resolution. "doing more home projects"

    ReplyDelete
  154. Anonymous9:12 PM

    Acutally Sean..

I have an undergraduate and masters degree from UA.

    The point stands though.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I'm not really dieting, I'm just not eating ice cream at 9 pm. But I sure would love some!

    ReplyDelete
  156. "Knuckle-draggin', mouth-breathin', move-their-lips-when-they-read (if they can) Earnhardt-lovin', cousin-humpin' Walmart alumni" is the correct phrase.

    ReplyDelete
  157. that was and will always be a classic FSJ. that is why i love him so. Dude doesnt give a damn

    ReplyDelete
  158. J/k, FSJ, if that were the case then my wife couldn't be an AU fan and she's just as big, if not bigger into it than me. She's a first class Bammer hater. I'm so proud.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I also do a practical New Years Resolution.

Hate Bama every day more than the previous day.

    Works for me.

    ReplyDelete
  160. So that explains why you're tolerable. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  161. Anonymous9:14 PM

I'd love to see O'Reilly and Olbermann debate....or in a steel cage death match....Either one...

    ReplyDelete
  162. Anonymous9:14 PM

CH=B ...it's the huge % of Bama fans that are inbred: Thus CH=B!!!

    ReplyDelete
  163. E......Good resolution. Keep that up.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Anonymous9:14 PM

    LOL...maybe so Sean.

    ReplyDelete
  165. This comment has been removed by the author.
