Auburn men lose at Vanderbilt

Hey everyone. Jeff Lebo and the gang lost their fourth SEC game in five tries today in Cashville, 82-74.

Auburn led by 13 points early in the second half. The Commodores went on an 11-2 run ... and the rest is history.

Lucas Hargrove led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Vanderbilt was led by Jeffrey Taylor's 18 points.

The Tigers (10-10, 1-4) resume play Thursday night against Ole Miss. That one will be played at The Beav.

    I'm sneaky like that.

I figure that Alabama and Auburn will be fighting it out for the fifth place in the West...in basketball.

I don't know if the state could handle having both teams be good in anything other than football.

  20. I saw a thread on Scout last week that interested me. It opined that in addition to the AAU limitations that have been placed on Lebo in the past that the Under Armour contract is hurting as well.

Undeniably, the shoe companies control the AAU teams, and it's the AAU programs that are the feeders to the college more than the high schools. Under Armour is not a big deal in the AAU world like Nike and Adidas.

Lebo needs to go, but this is a subject worth exploring at the highest levels of Auburn athletics to see if we can do better.

  31. FearlessFreep, does your wife, Mrs Vet, have any preference on Total Hip Replacement vs the FHO method for a 70 pound, 7-yr old Golden Retriever recently diagnosed with hip dysplasia that is very dear to my family? Couple of options:

Here's a 2.5" external HDD, ruggedized. It does not need a power adapter so that's good. 500 GB 2.5" drive - shockproof. I use it. It's on sale and that's a very good price.

A second option, if you want more storage, cheaper, however it requires power adapter and is not very portable / rugged. Here : Iomega 1GB external drive from Fry's

  35. Miller - Seagate makes good product. They're a solid company, their drives are typically very stable with little trouble. They're quite often seen elsewhere under other names too - i.e. the big server or PC companies will brand a Seagate with their own corporate name. That's speaking specifically towards their use as an internal (or external in the case of drive storage in a SAN environment) so I'm sure the same is true when used as external storage for a home system.

    Next question?

  41. Kathy,
My daughter's only advise was to make sure you use a board certified surgeon and get at least two opinions - even if you love your vet. I know there are three board certified surgeons in Birmingham, not sure about Huntsville. She just said sometimes one will see something the other doesn't, so it never hurts to have that 2nd opinion. She also said many of their rescue dogs had been able to avoid surgery by keeping their weight down and strengthening those muscles. She also said you really want to make sure that kind of surgery is a last option. Not sure any of that was new, but for what it's worth.

Lebo should stay. He is about to get the competitive advantage he has lacked at Auburn - facilities. He should get a chance to see if he can garner the necessary players to make Auburn better by using the facilities as a recruiting tool. To jettison him at this point would be early in my opinion.

So let's all be the Auburn men and women we should be and support Coach Lebo and the Tigers.

P.S. Coach Fortner deserves a raise.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anybody that thinks Lebo should stay... certainly is out of their freakin mind.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think we should keep a coach just because we promised him a new arena before he was hired and we haven't yet delivered on that promise, so I must be out of my mind.

Whether he can coach or not, whether he can recruit or not, didn't we promise him an arena before he took the job?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Anonymous6:06 PM

Looks like it's me and you, THT. I agree with your statement as well.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't remember promising him an arena 6-7 years ago before he was hired... even if he was promised that... we took that step by building the arena... I do believe he promised a competitive team. He hasn't lived up to his promise.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I've been slapped around more than most for defending Lebo.

I think he's a good coach, but he's a poor fit. He's not getting it done.

He's had plenty of time to get the program heading in the right direction. He's on his way to his fourth 4-12 or worse SEC record in six years.

Auburn has invested heavily in a new arena. The leadership has to ask itself whether Jeff Lebo will do significantly better in the arena. I don't think the answer is yes.

Auburn has 90 million reasons to head in a new direction.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I can live with two more years of Basketball futility because I don't really care. But the longer he stays the further behind we get. It will be a shame to see that nice empty new arena but I will suffer through that also. Go Lebo beat them div II schools.

    ReplyDelete
  58. D Miller, Seagate is a good name brand. I would go for it. External hard drives are the way to go. Personally, I have 3 500GB external western digital myBook drives that have worked well for me. I basically have redundant backups on them and in the case of my computer turning to crap, I just hook up another and I am good to go. I would also recommend setting up something to regularly back up your internal hard drive data to the external drive. I have daily backups that run early in the morning.

    ReplyDelete
  59. By "we", I didn't mean you or I, D. Miller. It was my understanding that Jay Jacobs promised Lebo an arena within 4 years. I do not know if that is accurate information or not. If it is, AU hasn't kept its end of the deal and owes it to Lebo to let him coach in the new arena. Whether he wins another game this season or not.

If no such promises were made, it's way past time for a new coach.

    ReplyDelete
  60. SteveFC - by early in the morning, do you mean around 9 a.m.?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Kathy:

For what it is worth from a serial lurker:

Dr. James Milton is a retired professor from Auburn who runs a surgical clinic in Bammerham. His protege is Dr. Ballagas and I believe that all the vets in Birmingham consider their practice to be the best in the business.

They did back surgery on my dachshund about 2 years ago with great result.

Just an option in case you don't want to go all the way to Auburn (not that there is anything wrong with that).

    Good luck in any event.

    ReplyDelete
  62. THT ...

You are trying to enforce the unenforceable. There is no consideration given by Lebo for a $90 million arena.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Usually 7 or 8, but 9 would work too. I usually don't get up until about 11.

I just noticed we have an all SOAP channel. They really need to get an all fishing show channel for people that can't handle the excitement of the all SOAP channel.

    ReplyDelete
  64. THT... by "we" I was referring to AU... not us individual fans.

Still, Lebo has not held up his end of the deal. The business side of me says that Lebo has to go. AU does not want to open a new arena to the same (lack of) attendance. They have to bring in a new coach to breath new life, and hope, into the program. That is the only way to get attendance numbers up in the new arena.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I had hopes that Lebo would show improvement this season after finishing last season on a positive note, but I think all three of the positive notes graduated. No point in continuing to kick the dog after he is dead. Get a new coach.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think people just spout off random stuff based on the topic at hand.

ie If they're ripping homers, just rip the guy whose name happens to be in your mind.

If they're ripping haters, just rip the guys whose name happens to be in your mind ... even if it's the same guy you ripped for being a homer.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Kathy,
We used Dr. Milton with our last Golden Girl, Molly, when our vet diagnosed her with osteosarcoma. He was great. Unfortunately we couldn't really do anything but give her pain meds and let her tell us when she had had enough. But if we had been able to do surgery, I would have felt very comfortable having him do it.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Lebo has trouble just keeping the players he signs. There is no evidence to show that changing. Getting rid of Lebo is fair, regardless of Arena or not. He is not cut to be the HC at Auburn. More people dislike him than like him.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Anonymous7:09 PM

At one time, more people disliked Chizik than liked him. Clearly, that wasn't fair.

I have no problem leading the "Save Lebo" train.

    ReplyDelete
  79. So you think he has shown the ability to win games? Put a quality product on the floor? Manage a game? Teach fundamentals? Anything that even closely resembles what a (even mildly) successful basketball coach should?
I don't see it. And believe me, I have tried.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  82. Anonymous7:31 PM

I don't personally know anyone that dislikes Lebo. I do however know a lot of AU folks that think he should be replaced.

I realize that AU and most of the SEC struggle to attract players with the best fundamentals and must rely on athleticism, but the few times I've watched AU, we seem to be very undisciplined with wildly varying focus. It seems to be just a bunch of dudes making individual plays. That seems to poor coaching.

I think Lebo has had plenty of time and some extra to show what he can do. I don't see that a new arena will make any difference in that. Extra years for Lebo are likely to be wasted years.

I don't think anyone expects championship teams, but I think everyone expects teams that aren't and embarrassment.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I know nothing about Lebo as a man... I am sure he is a fine person, and I have nothing against him in that regard. But, he's not the right fit at AU. He's had every opportunity to make something work, and nothing has. Don't feed me the whole "he had limitations" crap... Every coach has to deal with limitations of some form or fashion... a good coach knows how to overcome them.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anonymous8:08 PM

DM, I agree ...Lebo did have limitations, but except for the new arena those limitations are gone and he should have been able to overcome better than he has.

    ReplyDelete
  97. There are some parallels to be drawn between Lebo and the former football coach whose name we are not supposed to utter.

He has had some success against our program's No. 1 rival -- but the coach he abused so frequently is no longer there. He's had some impressive wins.

Considering where we were when he arrived, back to back 4-12 seasons were understandable. And who among us wasn't impressed in year 3 when we were in the hunt for a bye in the SEC tournament on the final day of the regular season?

Then, we took a step backward with a third 4-12 season.

Last season, you can argue whether we belonged in the NCAA tournament, but it was a successful year by Auburn standards.

Here's the ultimate point: last season created a standard of where we want our team to be. It was not a blank check to take a step backward.

In our division, four of the programs have impressive coaches with a history of success. John Pelphrey has issues to settle at Arkansas. Who's the weak link on the other side?

We've bet $90 million on basketball. There's no time for emotion, a sense of entitlement, or anything else.

    The stakes are too high.

Sports Reporter Tate is cautious with breaking news, accurate, on point and never employs sensationalism to gain an audience. That is solid journalism and far from a homer.

P Marshall has been called a homer because he has tended to give benefit of doubt. Personally I admire a reporter not piling on when there is resonable doubt.

If We Get Lattimore and Dyer - You See a Red Shirt? What's the possibilities of a redshirt for either/both of these guys? Looking at our '10 roster of Aycock, Smith, Fannin & McCalebb I don't think we are deep enough to afford siting either one of them down for a season. This is assuming they can pick up the offense. We don't have an every down back listed in the quartet above. I think they both play as true freshmen.

  134. Aero, I was so taken with your use of the word "seastrunked," that I looked it up in the dictionary:

Seastrunked -- verb -- to jilt; to forgo; to recruit, then not sign.

  135. Lebo needs to go. We are starting four seniors, so next year will be a "rebuilding year"?

We're going down from what we've got this year?

Let's start next season with new arena, new coach and new life breathed into the Auburn BB program!

  140. Great article JGT. These coaches are earning their pay.

So Urban will be coaching spring practice. There is more to this story than we know. What a strange situation.

    ReplyDelete
  141. True Kathy, it gets stranger as time goes on.

  143. Occasionally I hear a quote in sports that I find intriguing. It is a quote the lets me know why I am just a spectator and there people are professionals. I was listening to a replay of a boxing max on HBO this morning and a trainer was giving his boxer advice in Spanish. For some reason the fighter didn't listen to the advice and got knocked out. What was the advice?

    "Don't let him hit you"!!!

    Simple, yet brilliant.

AU's #1 remaining uncommitted target. i hope cam can get him the short passes as well as his hs qb.

just in case some folks have not seen what these coaches are going after.

they should make a great combo.

  146. Sage advice FC. I could have used a little advice like that in times gone by.

  147. ok, bridge time is over. We had fun even though my bidding left a lot to be desired.

    Excellent article this morning, Homer.

  148. Lattimore reminds me a lot of Eric Dickerson in his stance and running style in those clips Chip. Lets hope he is a Clone.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Lattimore is a very mature, respectable young man. He will have a bright future and will be a tremendous asset to either team.

    I'm glad we got Dyer!

    ReplyDelete
  150. Dyer seems to mimic more of a Michael Turner for Atlanta in the last clip Chip. Better off between the tackles with good power.

If we can get both, that will be one One Hell'uv'a Combination at running back.

    Inside - Outside.

  151. I love the Sam Harvill video play where he tackles the ENTIRE BACKFIELD, the QB and BOTH RBs.

Y'all have a great Sunday afternoon, Hotties. Penguins on NBC in 30 minutes, BTW.

  153. I just looked up Dickerson's career - I remember him playing for the Falcons, but thought it was for an entire season. Only played 4 games in '93 and then failed his physical the following year.

The mind is the second thing to go.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Loganville, for some reason I thought he played there longer as well.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Eric Dickerson will always be remembered for 2 things.

    Crazy goggles.

And constantly referring back to himself as a Monday Night Football sideline reporter.

  156. Question about Sam Harvill if he in fact he plays at Auburn. Will the coaches let him play with all that crap on his face? I see that he is an incredibly strong kid, and plays really good defensive line. I just don't get the whole playing with all the crap on your face thing.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Not gonna cheer for the Flyers, THT, but I love Ray Emery. He's a badass.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Just saw another thing on Sam - he's 6'1" although he's probably got some growing to do, but 6'1" doesn't put you on the D line, right? Incredibly strong and evidently very smart kid, so I'm sure they'd look at him, but with 4.98 speed is he a LB? Plus he has all that crap on his face.

    ReplyDelete
  159. 6'1" and just finishing his junior year? I think I might have been 5'6" as a junior... and I'm 6'1"...

6'1" is fine for a DT... I don't think Josh Thompson was even 6'0", was he?

    ReplyDelete
  160. Yeah, but Josh didn't have all that crap on his face

    ReplyDelete
  161. For some reason, in truth I thought d line guys were well over 6' but that may just be me.

    ReplyDelete
  162. And Josh according to one roster thing I just looked at played at 6' 301 lb.

    ReplyDelete
  163. If Josh Thompson was 5-10, then Dewayne Reed is the paragon of hoops discipline.

  164. Kathy, I read where Big Bird recommended Dr. Milton and Dr. Ballagas. And, Cincy, Dr. Milton. When Geno was attacked and his leg was broken, Dr. Ballagas did his surgery. I HIGHLY recommend him! Not only is he a great surgeon, but he is very compassionate and has a fantastic bedside manner. When we told him that even though they shouldn't be, finances were an issue. He said not worry about that and that he would do right by our dog no matter what. We dealt with Dr. Milton once. While I'm sure he is great surgeon, his bedside manner was a lot drier and matter-of-fact.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Thank you Luv. These recommendations have provided me with reassurance. Hopefully we won't have to cross that bridge for quite a while. The medicine has helped her. She is walking on that leg again and bouncing around like she feels good. I'm not naive. I know that it will continue to deteriorate. She will let me know when it's time for further action.

  166. EEEESH...anyone watching the Lady Tigers? Kentucky is pretty much dismantling them. It's painful to watch. UK is up by 20. Not to mention the announcers are falling all over themselves singing UK's praises.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Watching Colts/Jets.....

    Was that out eagle?

    ReplyDelete
  168. I was wondering that also LT. I turned it on right as he started to fly so I didn't know if they announced it or not. I gave a big War Eagle anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  169. If they announced anything about the eagle at all, I missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Is there a difference between Western Digital and Seagate brands for the external hard drive?

    ReplyDelete
  171. My IT guys believe in both..... It Maxar(sp) if I recall they said was crap. I have WD 10K RPM in this new computer with no complaints so far. A Seagate 1.5 TB as back up. My IT guys aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer though

    ReplyDelete
  172. We had a DT named DeMarco McNeil while the great coach of all time, Mike Dubose, was at the evil empire. He was highly regarded and wanted to go to the evil empire but he didn't meet the Dubosian height requirement that he gave his staff for prototypical linemen. Dubose regretted it. I believe McNeil's NFL career was cut short because of back problems, but he was a heck of a football player.

    ReplyDelete
  173. D. Miller, I am not an expert but Seagate seems to be a better brand. They are what we support in the server products I develop. We don't even test Western Digital.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I do use Western Digital for my external drives, but if it is strictly a quality comparison, I go with Seagate. I went the quantity route with 3 external drives.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I saw the eagle at the Colts-Jets game too- my first thought was it was Spirit, but then I caught a glimpse of where the bird was expected to land- they had a guy with his arm out on top of a yellow box. That's not how SERRC trained our eagles to land- they put a target on the ground and let them hit it.

Still- I think we can claim copyright on the whole "fly an eagle during pregame" concept. Maybe we could sue 'em. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  176. That eagle flight was pretty cool. Yes, it made me think of Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Wow, the Jets just opened up a can.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Who would have thought of the four teams playing today, the Jets would have quick strike TD.
