Calling around on Cam Newton: First and Last Part

Hey everyone. I am working on a story about Cam Newton, Auburn's 5-star quarterback who signed last month. He played sparingly during two seasons at Florida. He played all the time at Blinn (Texas) College.

I've been talking with the Southwest Junior College Football Conference coaches who schemed against Newton last fall.

Here's what Donnie Bigby, head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma, had to say.

Newton's numbers in Blinn's 55-42 win against NEO:
17-29, 302 yards, 2 TDs

*OF NOTE -- Newton was suspended for the first quarter.

Bigby on Newton: ``He's the most athletic and skilled quarterback I've seen since Michael Bishop. (Bishop, who later starred at Kansas State, played at Blinn in 1996.) You could tell he had tons and tons of potential. I'm talking about raw talent you just don't see at this level."

Bigby on what NEO did to match up with Newton: ``He's such a big kid. He looks like a defensive lineman, to be honest. I think he'd be a tough matchup on his own -- if he was the only guy on his team. The thing is that he had a great supporting cast last season. We couldn't just worry about him, but he created a lot of problems."

  1. actually 2nd since someone deleted one. yippee! go Cam go!

  2. What was he suspended for????

    Is this an Omen...

    ReplyDelete
  3. D. Robinson is one thought but I'm thinking it someone that is committed and wants to keep it a secret for now.

Seanzie, since we get some of our info from the same spot I'm sure one of us will update the HABOTN when we find out.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Newton's coach hasn't spilled about the suspension, but it was only one quarter.

That sounds like tardiness to me.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Has anyone seen Jhag this morning? I'm worried he might be despondent over Favre's loss?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I was reading a live chat with Tom Dienhart. He doesnt think we can challenge the walmartians for the west next year.

    What do you think?

I think if Cam picks up this offense and we show improvement on defense we can make a run.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hopefully he'll live up to this potential. We are due a top level performing QB.

    ReplyDelete
  8. CH=B, not many people do. It wouldn't bother me if they all kept thinking that.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Part of me feels the same way Luv.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well winning the west is about more than beating just UA. We have to beat Arkansas and LSU...something we haven't done since 2004.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think Auburn has a MUCH better chance of beating both those teams next season.

    ReplyDelete
  12. CH=B, I want Auburn to be the surprise team in the SEC next season.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yeah but we had a great chance to do it in 05, 06 and 07 and couldn't do it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. But look who the coaching staff was then...

    ReplyDelete
  15. That staff had a knack for winning a couple they shouldn't have and losing a couple they shouldn't have.

    ReplyDelete
  16. please turn in your trophies.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm keeping my tophies.

    ReplyDelete
  18. the more things change, the more they change

    ReplyDelete
  19. That would be trophies...I'm not sure what a tophy is.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sean earned his "666" trophy fair and square, aight?

    ReplyDelete
  21. well, whatever a tophy is, you've got more than one.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Any chance of Cam switching to DE when Kodi beats him out for the starting QB job?

    ReplyDelete
  23. JGT...

Do you think Lache is waiting to see what Lattimore does before making a choice???

I know we have laid off, but he has to sign somewhere....

    ReplyDelete
  24. DL, I think that's not the case since Lache is announcing before Lattimore.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You're kidding, right PF?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Some calls it a "mark", some calls it a "tophy", mmmhmm.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think Seastrunk is involved with South Carolina. It's pretty much LSU, USC and Oregon ... right?

    ReplyDelete
  28. You're kidding, right Luv?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Kidding about Cam playing DE? Not so much. The East Oklahoma Perimeter College said he'd be good at it and that his talent was raw. You need to be refined to play in the SEC.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think tophy has something to do with gout.

    Oh wait, that's tophi. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  31. He might as well wear an ascot.

    ReplyDelete
  32. OK I got my dates backwards..

I thought Lache was afer lattimore...

I hope lache does not go to LSU

    ReplyDelete
  33. that was funny, PF.

    Count me amongst the unrefined.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think Lache is going to Oregon.

    ReplyDelete
  35. about Kodi winning the starting QB job

I'll take some fundmentals along with athleticism please

...get on the Rollison Express ....TR ..TR ..TR!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous12:38 PM

If Kodi is QB-ing, I'm skipping next season.

    ReplyDelete
  40. All I know is that Kodi got his ascot for no gain in overtime on the hideous play before the hideous pass toward Trott in OT against Northwestern.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I voted for Kodi in 2008. I had buyer's remorse a year later.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous12:41 PM

PF ...if you'll just quit your job and move your new bride and yourself to AU and teach QB fundamentals ...maybe Kodi will finally get it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I want all of our players to be successful, but what does it say about the Rollison Express when you sign a junior college quarterback, and the two most prominent visitor at junior weekend our quarterbacks?

    ReplyDelete
  44. JayGT - cool idea to talk to former opposing coaches for Cam nuggets. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anonymous12:43 PM

I'm normally against dissing a player in public, but I've seen some of the worst passes in my life over the past couple of seasons.

Kodi is a good AU man and has good attributes. It's time for the coaches to give up on the passing attribute.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous12:46 PM

Jet ..I agree that TR has a lot to prove and your reasoning is dead on. I was trying to get Eduardo going

TR's HS films do show excellent form, accuracy and vision. Now if there is a discipline/leadership problem......

    ReplyDelete
  47. I know about ascots, not QB fundamentals. Quit pressuring me.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Lady Asthabula, the last time we met was at Ascot, was it not?

    ReplyDelete
  49. my internet, which has nothing to do with my dead phone line, has slowed to the pace of a snail with no slime.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Tar Heel, did you check the inside line?

    ReplyDelete
  51. PF ... maybe Chiz can hire you as Ascot Coordinator.

    ReplyDelete
  52. LUV - I went to the box outside and unplugged the jack and plugged a phone in and had a dial tone and was able to call. So, it actually may be something in the house, but I don't know what. I've unplugged everything from all the phone jacks, then plugged one phone in and... nothing. The AT&T people will be here Wed morning. In the meantime, I'm hoping I can get our home security people here today or tomorrow since they hooked all the stuff up inside and they know a whole lot more about this stuff than the phone company.

    ReplyDelete
  53. THT, Enough of that terrestrial nonsense. Get satellite phones for the whole house, have the security company wire it, and be done with it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My side girls love me some ascots.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think Auburn has been delivered from the failed Kodi-as-QB experiment. It's on par with shock treatment for schizophrenics. However, well intentioned, it was a horrible mistake that will not be replicated. Let's not relive the nightmare on this blog (or anywhere).

    ReplyDelete
  56. I heard they still do icepick lobotomies, though.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Commish - we need other opinions first before we put a moratorium on that. Let's wait to see what SteveFC has to say.

  60. Tar Heel, they won't be there until Wed.???? They should have had someone out there TODAY.

    ReplyDelete
  61. SteveFC "hearts" XCTT

    ReplyDelete
  62. All of Steve's opinions were blocked once I wrapped aluminum foil around my head. Thank goodness. I couldn't take any more messages about Hugh Nall - the greatest football coach ever.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Does anyone know anything about the Muscle Shoals, Al area? I have an interview with Great Southern Wood and they have a facility up there.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Peter F is back on his Meds.
    Thank goodness.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm high on life, just like you, geezer.

    ReplyDelete
  67. What's with all the comment deletions?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Jay G, there is some talk on the MSU message board that Mullen has turned AU in to the NCAA regarding the recruitment of Cam Newton. Have you caught any wind of this accusation or is it just sour grapes?

    ReplyDelete
  69. PF, that would be DOM.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Rumor or not, what would make anyone think there was any violation committed there?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Muscle Shoals has got The Swampers. Aside from that, I can't help you but good luck with the interview.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Good to hear Peter "The Great"
We need level heads and men(women) of good character. Leaders who are not afraid of heights and will not suffer from dizzyness when the Tigers climb to the TOP.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I hear ya, Digger! Keep talking!

    ReplyDelete
  74. So true Luv so true

    ReplyDelete
  75. Luv, I saw that rumor also. I have also heard another version that says MSU gave him money. He took it and ran.

Mostly likely Mullen and MSU are just ticked because they thought they had him.

    ReplyDelete
  76. The Swampers.... and they've been known to pick a song or two

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hoopie,

Did I just read you make a negative comment about an indvidual player?

    Shame on you.

    I kid, I kid.

    ReplyDelete
  78. That rumor was started by "the town idiot of Center Point" that goes on Finebomb and I do not believe it has legs.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Boy oh boy. JayG is going to interview every coach that played against an Auburn recruit.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Digger, it's Monday. I only answer to Peter "the Wise" on Mondays.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I guess people just find it hard to believe that anyone would want to play for Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  82. My mistake O great one I will remember that.

    ReplyDelete
  83. What's shakin'?

Did I miss anything (besides a few loses) from the weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous2:02 PM

Luv, Newton played for Mullen while at Fla. and MSU thought they were a lock for CN because of that relationship. If you assume that the MSU folks were to act like Walmartians, then it becomes easy to imagine them making up a cheatin' story to soothe their bruised egos.

CN's dad has explained that AU has much more talent to go along with his kid's talent and that his kid wouldn't have to do it all by himself at AU. The dad even offered a comment that MSU planned to use his kid "like a rented Mule".

    ReplyDelete
  85. no, wait. I'm mistaken. Monday is Peter "the ..."

Titles don't start until the following Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Let's see...

    Miss State or Auburn?

    We are talking football right?

There is only one obvious choice. Had Newton gone to State, then maybe the NCAA should look into it.

    ReplyDelete
  87. i don't care what Mullen has to say. He'll eventually be fired and forgotten, like all other MSU coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Hoopie, yeah, I remember thinking, "Rented mule? Are they paying him?"

    ReplyDelete
  89. I can recall MSU students and alumni saying "Emory is a memory" back in the 80's when they got rid of Emory Bellard. They were busy getting excited about Rocky Felker. How'd that work out for them?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Anonymous2:07 PM

RK ...ya got me .....BTW, I did agonize whether to do it, but I guess since I wasn't opening new ground and didn't dwell on it too long......

I will from time to time comment on readily apparent fundamental problems that can be viewed on film ...I know, it's a character flaw.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Like I said, it's so hard for people to admit that maybe these guys actually want to play for Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  92. It's a shame MSU thinks they have to stoop to that level.

    ReplyDelete
  93. The ice packer from Center Point is and idiot.

Luv ....what's the fastest car in the world? ....A rental car.

A rented Mule gets worked harder and longer than all of the others and thus "used up". ...I can see you haven't been hanging with farmers lately.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hoopie, I know what a rented mule is. I just thought that was an odd choice of words.

    ReplyDelete
  97. What kind of farmers are still plowing their fields with mules?

Hoops has the Latin American connection, apparently.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Speaking of sour grapes, what has become of the James lawsuit?

    ReplyDelete
  99. One can gauge the level of Auburn's success by the conspiracy theories spewed by the Center Pointian.

Do you think "one who will not be named" pays those annoying callers to call in?

    ReplyDelete
  100. sup sup what's for supper?

PF, Bradley and the Texas guy both speculated that xCTT would have gone to Knoxvegas if available.

    so..... almost ..Steve FKx

I will say this. The UGA fans I know in NW Ga. love xCTT.

Leach took a legal hit. The judge sent the case to arbitration. Obviously this was a move to keep stuff quiet and reduce embarassment for the state school and the meddling booster.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Leach purposely trip up the arbitration just so he can get his facts out in public and then write a book. He is sortof crazy like that. If Leach can't get to a public trial, then I suspect the school will pressure James to back down and then settle with Leach much like the AU-xCTT settlement. Schools/Boosters hate the negative pub.

    ReplyDelete
  103. What you talkin bout Willis?

    Coleman arrested again.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  105. Got to love his pout.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Aero, are you mocking me?

    ReplyDelete
  107. *OF NOTE -- Newton was suspended for the first quarter.

Why? Is this going to be a problem with him?
    Thanks for the info Jay

    ReplyDelete
  108. You hear that in the distance?

    ...

chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga...CHOO! CHOO!

    ...

Sounds like the Rollison Express to me.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Bigdaddy, I think it was of note so that you could see he put up big numbers in only 3 quarters.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Rollison Express. Coming to JHS 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Nope, JG. In my opinion your current endeavor is a little overambitious. However I am not a beat writer or a sports journalist, so I don't know jack.

I really enjoyed his father's interview. A segment about every fresh signee / enrollee like that would be great. Maybe a few words from every enrollee's coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Holy crap, Aero, that'd be like 500000 threads.

    ReplyDelete
  113. yea. phone line fixed and I didn't have to resort to AT&T housecall, or the equally expensive satellite phone as suggested by PF. (that would be pretty cool and I'd have one if I had some of Peyton Manning or Bill Gates's moolah)

    ReplyDelete
  114. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I don't think the 25 Auburn signees would have 50,000 fathers.

    ReplyDelete
  116. now if I could just get internet connection working. sorry for the double post. Not sure how that happened and so far I can't get the delete comment page to load.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Internet has been real slow here at the office all day too.

The upside is it has sped up now that I'm one of the few people still here.

The down side is I'm one of the few people still here.

    ReplyDelete
  118. its the Chinese

    ReplyDelete
  119. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Right when THT said, "now if I could just get internet connection working"...my internet connection stopped working. It just came back up, but now I have a snack and a drink at my desk, so...thanks, THT!

    ReplyDelete
  121. glad to be of assistance.

btw, I heard Howard was down to 89.12% on his AU commitment. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  122. Yo soy un Contra.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I didn't get much sleep last night. I have a headache and I'm tired. A bit delirious. My house kicked a tornado's butt, but I still had to clean a lot of crap up and do patchwork. I have a billion other things to do. But do you know what? DO YOU KNOW WHAT??!?!? IT'S PUPPET HOUR! SO PUT SOME GAS IN THE LAWN MOWER AND START JUGGLING!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'm wondering if Auburn's commitment to DJ Howard might not be in the Pat Dye BAC range.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I think there's stale gas in the lawn mower from last year.

    ReplyDelete
  126. In DJ Howard can spin some LP's with wicked skill, then I would had to lose him.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Had means hate in Eurasian. Shut up, idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I can make popcorn pop by staring at it.

    ReplyDelete

  130. People who use idiot talk in Eurasia get executed. It is considered poor manners. A real foe paw.

    ReplyDelete
  131. who's playing in MNF tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Trust him, he's a Dr.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Hank Williams Jr vs John Madden.

    ReplyDelete
  134. More importantly, is anyone going to Miami this weekend for THE BIGGEST EVENT OF ITS KIND in the Western Hemisphere? Maybe even the whole world!

    ReplyDelete
  135. I know you aren't talking about the biggest popcorn necklace convention in the world, because I plan on running that out of my house in three weeks. If Miami one ups me, then I might have to trip a dog.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I'm guessing this has something to do with maps... so I won't be attending

    ReplyDelete
  137. nope, I'm talking about the SUPER BOWL of mapdom

    ReplyDelete
  138. nope was to the popcorn necklace gala.

    Wakerider is on the money!

    ReplyDelete
  139. So how many of the Pro Bowl players do they expect over at the mapfest?

    ReplyDelete
  140. The death of a bee by the loss of stinger is one of the most bittersweet in nature. Death is cold and dark, but they die knowing they protected their queen. They are at peace. That is why I like to whisper to bees that stung me, "I am still up and running, and I am going to kill your queen and steal your honey." Bees that sting me don't deserve tranquility on their death beds. Stings hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  141. i love sourwood honey. YUMMMMMMY! Honey bees are nice, they've never stung me.

Yellow jackets are despicable. They sting and they don't give you any honey.

    ReplyDelete
  142. good question, Scott Choc. I'm guessing very, very few. But I can guarantee that there will be a bunch of old folks there. MrsTHT and I will not be among them.

    ReplyDelete
  143. THT, since I don't seem to be going to any of the sporting(ish) events in the Sunshine State this weekend (unless someone secretly got me tickets and didn't tell me), maybe I'll go make fun of map nerds on my birthday. I mean, it's only $10 for hours of pointing and laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  144. i want a trophy. I'll even settle for a tophy. I made a post with the first 3 lines starting with the letter GEE. That's got to be worth some kind of award.

    ReplyDelete
  145. LOL, PF. That sounds like great fun!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Hey PF, you should take a poster board and draw a map on it, and then glue a mirror on it, and then point an arrow to the mirror that says "NERD HERE" and then go hold it up in front of all the map nerds.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Michael, Awesome idea. I'm gonna have the fourth best birthday of my twenties.

    ReplyDelete
  148. THT, you got any maps that you want expert opinions of?

    ReplyDelete
  149. It would suck to be an old map nerd about to drop some $$$ on an antique map and then have Chad Ochocinco walk in and outbid you for it (especially if PF was pointing at you and laughing at the same time).

    ReplyDelete
  150. How much must it suck to find out that you have to pay jacked up hotel prices for the map fair because of the Pro Bowl and pre-Super Bowl festivities that will be going on this weekend. Map nerds are getting punked big time by their organization by the event being held this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Yeah, they're taking it right in the atlas.

    ReplyDelete
  152. blahblahblah from AT&T when I'm trying to cancel their Wed. morning visit. This distracts me from HABOTN and this upsets me.

    ReplyDelete
  153. If Ricky Williams were in the Pro Bowl, he might really go to the map fair.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Favre says he's highly unlikely to return next season.

    Good Grief.

Remind me not to watch ESPN for the next eight months.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Jay G,

Can you get your buddy 85 on the phone and make Rey del Chocolate's scenario happen? I'd love to be a part.

    ReplyDelete
  156. SC, he does have a Miami abode.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I'm a huge fan of Ricky Williams, by the way. He's a seriously interesting dude.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Overambitious? Fair enough.

We're finished with the coach quotes. Win some, lose some.

    ReplyDelete
  159. y'all are hilarious! I would love to gather y'all up and go to the map fair and let y'all make comments about all the map nerds as they enter, including me.

Map fair has always been last weekend in Jan. since it started back in the early 90s, with the exception of one year they moved it to the first weekend in Feb to avoid the Super Bowl. Now this year they have to deal with the Pro Bowl. Seems like there is usually a marathon in Miami about this time of year also.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I prefer ya'll, but we've had that discussion before.

    ReplyDelete
  161. PF - I value my opinions of my maps more than any experts'.

    ReplyDelete
  162. yes, we have. And I did indeed recall that discussion as I was typing it, twice.

    ReplyDelete
  163. "it" being y'all, not the discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I think the consensus was that I was right, but you weren't changing...or at least that's how I remember it.

    ReplyDelete
  165. y'all is better if for no other reason than to avoid the little red underline telling you that ya'll is misspelled.

    ReplyDelete
  166. hmmm. I never noticed that red underline.

    ReplyDelete
  167. i don't remember you being "right." I do remember that your explanation (which I've forgotten) actually made pretty good sense.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Give it up, guys. Come on.

    ReplyDelete
  169. NEWS FLASH!!!

Howard's AU commitment has inched back up to 90.79%.

    ReplyDelete
  170. JGT, that was only one person's opinion on the coach quotes. I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

    ReplyDelete
  171. We're just having fun Jay G.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I thought it was a FANTASTIC idea. But then, I prefer y'all, so that makes my opinion pretty worthless.

    ReplyDelete
  173. PF, I think Ricky Williams is pretty interesting, too. I really could see him going to the map fair.

    ReplyDelete
  174. THT,

I'd just like to say that my memory of the outcome of things like that is as selective as the history books that they have us read in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I'm not interesting (it even says as much on my profile), but I promise I'd be at the map fair if it was outside the state of Florida. Heck, I might even go if it was in Tampa or Jacksonville.

    ReplyDelete
  176. There's a plaque in my kitchen that says "Shalom Y'all." I thought it was kinda funny/cute until I noticed the positioning of the apostrophe. Now, I hate it.

    ReplyDelete
  177. oh boy. Don't get me started there, PF. I could rant all night long!

    ReplyDelete
  178. PF, you're in high school? Got any classes with jhag? Partying in anyone's basement this weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  179. No, SC. I'm not. That was just bad phrasing on my part.

Basement parties would be awesome, though, except there are no basements around here.

    ReplyDelete
  180. yep, 24 and in high school. They must have held him back.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Alright, PF's about to flip it with a countdown (or is that a count-up?).

    ReplyDelete
  182. Are we on the next page yet?

    ReplyDelete
  183. I wish I was 24. That was an awesome year. I've got one year and 6 days left in this decade of my life.

    ReplyDelete
