Column as promised

Hey everyone. I mentioned yesterday that a column would appear this morning discussing how Alabama's 13th eighth national championship doesn't make Gene Chizik's job more difficult.

Here it is: Tigers make solid strides in spite of Tide's rise

Please enjoy.

If you're so inclined, please feel free to discuss the column in the comments section.

Luv,

In response to the previous thread about Tubs saying he likes to recruit.

I agree with Hoopie, Tubs openly admits to being a car salesman, so he's going to say whatever he needs to get what he wants.

I don't think Tubs hates recruiting, he just does it in a way that time might have passed by.

Also, I don't see why we can't discuss coaches past and present when the topic comes up. (Go ahead throw the penalty flag my way.)

Good read.

I think the only place that Bama winning the national title hurts us is in the perspective of people not watching very closely.

That being said, we have started fast in recruiting, we need to finish. We started fast in several games (to the point we could have been 11-2 this year) but didn't know how to finish.

Good article, Jay. And I am so happy for Dansby.

I saw a little of the ladies' game yesterday on the tube. They were magnificent.

Jay, I was a little confused by your headline on that blog entry. I was wondering what in Baton Rouge upset Auburn Engineers--bad bridges? Oh well, it is early on a cold Monday morning. Forgive my cognitive limitations...

I have never followed recruiting; have never eve really paid attention to who signed until depth charts come out in the fall. Reading WTC's mom's comments makes me kinda feel like I do now, even though I feel like I need a dungeon master's guide to keep up and understand what is happening.

Excellent article deconstructing prevailing assumptions about the status quo.

However, a few additions may have made the article even more interesting, e.g.:

"Simply claiming ownership of that Sears-branded glass football [now situated at a Wal-Mart near you]....

"It was a [better than mediocre team that nearly lost to a McCoy-less UT team led by a 19 year old] with a [teeny tiny] coach [whose stature far exceeds his integrity]."

Petty additions? Sure, but also factual and they bring a smile to my face.

Jay that was a very thought provoking article. Enjoyed reading it and I too believe this coaching staff is well on the way to bigger and better things.
Some one said "with the problems Tenn has Auburn may have a good chance of winning". After watching the last 15 minutes of the game with Kansas I dun feel too good about that.

Good reading Jay, A hard finish in recruiting this year could set the trend for the coming years.

In some cases AU will sell itself (Tubby) but in most, staff interest and participation are the key to top recruits (Chiz)

I agree with WERK the CH's MNC will cause a lot of eyes to skim over us, could be an advantage

Nice read Jay.

There's a couple of more issues I would bring up regarding the Walmartian's supposed ability to keep AU down.

1. Scholly limits increase parity.

2. Info Availability: The Bear was a master at manipulating/promising the kids to get them to sign with Bama. Today's info age will limit any coach's ability to tell the kids what they want to hear and reel them in just to keep them away from others.

3. Today's kids are far removed from the Bear mystique. Many of these kid's(especially out-of-state) see AU as having a much better recent history.

..and No. 4 and most importqantly ...WE WILL NOT GO BACK INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT AGAIN.

By the way, AU's gymnastics team barely lost to UAT on Friday. AU's Coach Thompson mentioned something about how you can't "play defense" in gymnastics. Wouldn't that be cool if you could? The arrival of Saban certainly had an effect and is partially why the 2008 recruiting class was down, but ChizCo has definitely proven that they will compete with Bama.

There are also negatives to winning a NC. For instance, more players will be likely to bolt for the NFL. Also, there is less room to rise. Recruits see a team with little playing time available.

What it boils down to is the difference between the programs will come down to coaching, and I do like our chances at this point.

Jay's article makes some important points, like how Bama's rise actually helped us get a New Year's day bowl.

Also, he mentions the offensive slow down to allow the defense to rest. That gets into something I really like, which is the areas where I can see improvement next season. This 8-5 team has plenty of areas they can improve.

Defensively and special teams will likely be better with more depth, even with the loss of Coleman and McFadden. This will allow Malzahn to crank up his offense, which offers improvement there. Additionally, if Newton works out at QB, we could see significant improvement there. Todd was a manager. Newton could be a weapon.

There are plenty of reasons to be proud to be an Auburn Tiger.

Barrack Oboma does some of those. Redneck President? I dunno.

I claim every first down we have gotten over our entire football existance as a national championship.

Why not, I've seen almost equal accomplishments claimed.

...because you're better than that?

11:56 AM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

It's funny how the only ones that claim "13" are UAT and the bammers. Just because they claim it, doesn't make it true.

I don't know if this has been discussed, but did anyone see The Sports Reporters yesterday? I do watch it, but I forgot yesterday. Apparently, John Saunders told UAT they only have 8 NCs.

You people are too hard on the Bambi. I mean, they should be admired. Before the Bear got there, they claimed 1 NC. After he retired, they claimed man, including are 5 before he got there. What other team can win national championships in years decades after the seasons have passed? You got to admie that.

Digger, I guess we are all rednecks then!

12:01 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

CH=B, the theme the last few weeks has been that they are getting called out. ESPN made a Bama alum say it, all of the graphics on the TV have said 7/8, Jay G's made a point to mention it, there was an article recently written questioning the guy responsible for adding the extras, and Luv just wrote that John Saunders called them out on the best show on television yesterday.

Didn't your parents ever use the "just because everyone else is doing it, doesn't make it right" line on you?

12:03 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

CH=B has a point. But, I can just hear the bammers if Auburn and Auburn fans started claiming 12 NCs! Not only are the kings and queens of excuses, but also double standards!

12:05 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Hey, eight national titles is impressive. They should be proud.

12:05 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

RK...exactly.

That eight is not enough for them shows a detachment from reality.

12:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The bottom line is that NCs claimed before the great depression mean about as much as....um, someone help me here. Heck, the ones in the prior century are pretty much meaningless.

I agree that we should only claim what was rightfully given to us. Please scratch my previous posts.

Princeton is the most storied program in college football.

Shouldn't Princeton get an automatic BCS bid?

G, can we get that walmartian crap removed from the main page?

PF...yes.

We're talking about the school where Craig T. Nelson and Dick Van Dyke's brother coached at, right?

Michael-Did you get to read page 2 of Jay's article yet? I could not believe he included pix of those barely clothed cheerleaders in that article.

RK...roger that. When Hayden Fox won the Super Bowl with the Orlando Breakers, he spoke in glowing terms of his time in the Scenic City.

Dobber played at Chattanooga too, I think.

Does Carroll leaving change Seastrunk's plans? Does he end up at Oregon?

12:18 PM

He got his as the empire was crumbling and got out.

Had he stayed a month longer, he might have really left on a down note.

I just don't get Carroll going to the Seahawks. Isn't the USC head coaching position much highly regarded than the Seahawks head coaching position? I just don't see it, unless it is just the money. I think he is suppose to make over $6 Million a year with Seattle.

wtc - no, I have not yet read page 2. I have decided it doesn't exist, in fact. It is like the MNC of Jay G Tate article pages. Just because you guys are talking about it doesn't make it real.

OK, HABOTNistas. Time to focus.

I am reminded of a great American football philosophizer -- Dennis Green.

"They are who we thought they were."

We expected them to win. And they did. Let's move on.

Whether they've won 8, 13 or 750 national championships, it doesn't matter. The pertinent number is one. The one they won last week.

The rest of it is just chasing a houndstooth ghost in a haze of Chesterfield cigarettes and the smell of cheap scotch.

Ask yourself this: is Auburn football better off today than it was the day Chizik was hired? Absolutely.

Do you see the path?

It's time to cut the "Eat Me" cake and unleash the "Deathmobile" on the Cousin Humpers and everyone else who stands in the way of us and our goals.

Are you with me? Let's do it!

I have a confession to make: though rooting for Texas, I am happy for Alabama that they won. I haven't had any negative feelings toward them. I haven't run into any jerk fans. All the fans I know have been completely cool about it.

But what I think it comes down to is that Auburn's future looks great now. I don't even want bama to slip the next couple of years. I want them to stay strong so we can have some epic Florida-Florida St circa 1990's clashes that decide the fate of humanity and have the nation's attention. This is a 180 from my previous hope that bama gets put on probation and dies a slow death littered with losing seasons.

So anyway, I will bring the hate on the week of the Iron Bowl, but other than that, I am cool with 'em. For now.
