Looking Back On a Classic

Hey everyone. I decided to tackle the drive home from Tampa immediately after completing my newspaper responsibilities last night. Sorry for the lack of post-game blogs.

I just had to get home. Being on the road that long drives me crazy.

So, about the game:

I thought about this on the drive home -- that was the best game I ever witnessed first-hand. I've always told people that the 1999 Super Regional baseball game between Auburn and FSU, the one where the late Brent Schoening used 130+ pitches to hold down a much better team, was the best athletic event of my lifetime.

I decided to reclassify that as "best individual performance" of my lifetime. You should have been there.

Yesterday's game was incredible. Four end-of-game celebrations, only one of them truly meaningful. Ben Tate losing his head and nearly losing the game. An illegal batting penalty on a guy who was in pass coverage 25 yards from the infraction. Crescendo after crescendo. And then a "modern-day fumblerooski" that was squashed at the 2.

Sounds like a movie.

Numbers that stood out -- and will stand out forever.

**Northwestern ran 115 plays.

**Josh Bynes, Craig Stevens, Neiko Thorpe and Daren Bates played all 115.

**Do you know how crazy that is? I'd assess 80 snaps as "crazy."

**Mike Kafka threw 78 passes.

**T'Sharvan Bell (known everywhere as Tee Bell) picks two passes.

**Walt McFadden takes one 100 yards.

**Northwestern, for all that offense, goes 6-for-23 on third down.

**Auburn penalized 12 times for 140 yards. Holy cow.

**Northwestern earned 33 first downs to Auburn's 18.

**Auburn finished with 425 yards on 72 plays. You're thinking: "Nice work."

**Northwestern finished with 625 yards on 115 pays. "Seriously?"

**Northwestern rushed 37 times for 93 yards. That's a 2.5 average. Nothing.

**Thorpe finished with 13 solo tackles.

**Auburn had 22 possessions. Northwestern had 18.

**Eighteen Outback Bowl records were broken Friday. Ten were tied.

ALSO OF NOTE: I enjoyed seeing everyone in the Official HABOTN Section®. That group included THT, LGG Byron, THT 2.0, Digger, IV, IV's sons, mrtommyd, AuFan365. I think Sean was due in the section, but I had to leave before he arrived. Thanks for the placards, THTs -- that was awesome.

ps: Is Cody Parkey struggling in the Under Armour game or what? Two missed PATs (one was affected by a bobbled snap), a short field goal and his kickoffs have been fielded at the 25 or so. Yummy!

Not really. Just here in a quiet house. Mrs. Jet wasn't feeling well. Stewardess was tired after work, and ElTurbo is running amok with his buddies, so I'm here with the laptop suffering with Mike Patrick and Bob Davie.

Just set my Direct TV DVR to record the replay of the Outback Bowl. It shows it is 2 hours. Wonder how they will condense that epic to 2 hours?

Jimmy,
I didn't realize how my players MS had dismissed or suspended. It is getting to be a good game.

No recruiting news that you giuys haven't already talked about. Dmiller knows his stuff. he shared a few things earlier.

We (Dmiller & I)both could be wrong, but I will say the list that Iposted theother night (Latt, Lemonier, Mack, Whitaker) is pretty much dead on. The one I was concerned about was Mack, but now he was caught in a photo with an AU hat on and nothing but Au recruits in the photo from the game today.

Congrats Cincy. Heck, all he has to do is to never cut it off. Just leave it at the lowest temperature all the time.

If we get Mack and Whittaker, I will be tickled to death. If we get Lattimore, my head may explode.

It is getting pretty close now. I just looked at Lemonier and the evil empire is after him too, so I now consider him a must have.

11:19 PM

They will not get him. They are after him, but they are not on his short list. We believe he has already made his decision and has told the coaches where he is going.

Trip to Outback Bowl-AUsome, AUsome, AUsome.
Getting to meet THT, THT 2.0, Lord Byron, Mr. Tommy D., AU FAN 365 and getting to see Scott Choc. after some 20 or so years, I can't put in words. Getting to meet Digger and having an opportunity for two old geezers that love Auburn to talk about how it was way back when, priceless. Digger, you are a jewel that shines bright in this world.

Cincy, don't you worry, you were there, I mean right there with us, I could feel your presence as I felt your love for Auburn.

I am a happy man. To be able to spend the better part of three days with my two sons doing what we love so much, I can't begin to talk about it, I will get too emotional. I love them so much and I love Auburn so much and to have had the opportunity one more time to share all that we did together, I just can't describe that to anyone.

Thanks Jay G. It was great to see you again. Thanks for stopping by the official HABOTN section, sharing some of your precious time and imparting some more of your knowledge with us.

As I sit here writing this, I realize that none of what happened in my life over the past few days would have come to pass had it not for one enterprising and ingenious young sports writer that covers the Auburn beat for the Montgomery Advertiser. Thanks Jay and last but certainly not least, thank you God for a safe and wonderful trip.

IV is home.

Glad you made it back, IV, and more importantly I am glad you had a wonderful time. I wish I could have been there. It turned into a very special game and this was a very special Auburn team.

We have had better teams, but I don't know if we have had to team with played with as much guts as I saw in this game. I still can't figure how our defense managed to keep going.

11:27 PM
Blogger wtc said...

IV, glad you are back safe. I thought I saw you a EPCOT today, I guess not. There was a man with an AU sweat shirt on with two adult kids, with Au stuff on and we chatted a moment but I never asked his name.

11:28 PM
Blogger wtc said...

While in line today, I met a couple from Montgomery (I think he is a judge) and thet saw the Au sweat shirt my friend (not the man I met) on and they started talking about the game. The judge's wife then said 'our game is not until later in the week.' My friend said 'do you oull for Troy?' She said no and he said is there another game this week? He then told her he doesn't follow any other team but AU. The conversation kind of stopped at that moment.

Auburn will get Lattimore and Mack. USC has very little chance. I agree with the comment that the offense has got to quit going 3 and out and not running some clock in the process. The defense does not have the depth to face 115 plays. Those 4 players will never have to play every play again...WDE

Sensi... that was one of the wildest, more bizarre games I've ever seen. Does that make it a classic? ...maybe ..maybe not. I think that answer is subjective. I don't think that "classic" is laughable.

Out of all that happened with the bowl game, that's your comment? ...well that's not "classic" ...fo sho.

8:07 AM
Blogger Kathy said...

Sensi, if everyone is talking about it, it's classic!!! Sure was A LOT of talk about it on ESPN for it not to be a classic. IF that is how we perceive it, then it is. Very proud of those defensive guys that didn't quit.

Woke up this morning to discover my downstairs gas heat is not working. Technician will be here in an hour. Fortunately the gas fire place warms the front part of the downstairs up nicely. The service technician did want me to know that it will cost me an extra $99 for the technician to come out on Sunday.

Happy New Year!

IV, so glad you are home and had such a special time with your sons. It's a memory you all will cherish forever. I was so jealous when I saw the picture posted on the HABOTN front page. Just to get to the bowl game was wonderful but then to get to witness such a "classic" game. You did the HABOTN Hotties proud!

9:00 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

You really have to call the game a classic. When is the last time Auburn allowed another team to run 115 plays? When is the last time Auburn allowed someone to run 115 plays, but still won the game? How do you allow someone to get over 600 yards of offense with what I considered to be a good defensive performance?

9:31 AM
Blogger Kathy said...

I liked the way AccessAuburn summed it up: Over 200 snaps, more than 100 passes, more than 1,000 yards of offense, 78 points, 15 penalties, 10 turnovers, and eight times the referee announced, "The previous play is under review..."

Blogger Kathy said...

NW has 21 seniors that they will miss next year.

Jay,

Nice blog. Yea, it was a great game. Like we said Auburn has gotten so much good press on the staff and the recruiting trail, losing that game in that fashion would have been such a let down. When we were up I knew my Auburn defense would let them back in I just didnt know how many times. It was a great game, a classic.

Did anybody else think all the Northwestern players had glue on their gloves, they didnt drop anything.

And yes that Darvin Adams scoop was a catch, the refs got it wrong.

9:47 AM
Blogger Kathy said...

That one catch would have put Adams over 1000 yards for the season.

9:49 AM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

Kathy,

I never complain because I love Darvin Adams, but we had a running joke that Chris Todd would have thrown to Darvin Adams on the bench. You wonder if the other receivers in the huddle would say hey Im open. I mean, it was like they were playing 2 vs. 11.

There are times I know that I'm too critical and a cynic, but you my friend are Cap'n Cynic.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

PDWT,

I posted during the game that this is Chris Todd's thought pattern as he's in the pocket going through his receiver progressons...

"Adams, Adams, Adams, Adams"

9:57 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

And yes, the NW players caught everything near them. That was an impressive group of hands they had there.

9:58 AM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

wareagle rk, i got even deeper, i pictured adams and tod riding tandem bikes together, todd winning adams a stuffed animal at the fair, ala huey louis and news video. I am not complaining but damn I mean he never looked off of Adams.

10:00 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I wish I knew why Adams was seemingly the only receiver. Yea, if Adams touches the ball, he catches it, but it would seem some other receivers would have had to have been open. I do hope we work on ball distribution. We have enough receiving talent to develop more than one play maker at the position.

10:15 AM
Blogger Kathy said...

I asked those that attended the game, and they said the other receivers weren't getting open.

10:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Kathy, I was wondering if that was the case, but how, if you are Northwestern, do you not double cover Adams? A guy getting 12 catches should cause someone else be open.

Hopefully next season will be different. I would love to see us with 4 or 5 receivers with 3 or 4 catches.

10:44 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

It kind of reminded me of the Bad News Bears where Buttermaker told Kelly to go after any ball he was close to.

"You know we have 9 men out here".

"Tanner, does he go to the bathroom for you, too"?

Catching up on thread from last night -

Cincy/Steve - A little FYI - the "emergency setting" on a thermostat is for heat pumps where they'll have an electric strip heater as backup for when it's too cold for a heat pump to work effectively.

Best thought is just set your tstat on heat to the lowest setting when no one is there. Or install a programmable tstat, set it to maintain the lowest setting as the program and override it while someone is there.

11:17 AM
Blogger Kathy said...

Technician just left. A capacitor had to be replaced. Kept the cost under $300. Could have been worse. Didn't take long to get the temp back up to 66. We keep both thermostats set on 66 during the winter.

I too get frustrated at Todd only seemingly looking at Adams. I've also noticed that Adams/Todd seem to know how they will adjust if the original route is covered.

Maybe there's something to those tandem bike rides.

The era of Todzilla is over. We'll have a new QB next season. If one of the others can beat out CN, he should be pretty good.

Adams will return. We have some promising freshmen that didn't get too much play this year. Hopefully a few of them will step up. We also have another promising group of recruits in the next class. Add in our RBs (including Dyer and probably Lattimore) and I think next year's offense will start to look a lot more like Gus wants.

12:36 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Adams does seem to come back to the QB better than a lot of receivers we've had in the past few years. He seems to know when his QB is in trouble.

One thing I look forward to in future years is consistent QB play, which we have been lacking for awhile.
