Furlough Day One: Sunday

Hey everyone. It's nice to have you here.

I am on a mandated and unpaid furlough as required by the Advertiser's parent company, Gannett. As such, I am not permitted to participate in blog-related activities for one week.

So we have these pre-loaded entries. That's all.

It's up to you to keep the HABOTN fresh until I return on Sunday, Feb. 21.

Have a nice day.

I'll bet cash money that Jay G. had a great time until the "Roll Tide Roll" version of Sweet Home Alabama played at the dance.

Then it became annoying.

Good morning all. I'm sure this was discussed last night, but that basketball game sucked. our half court offense at the end of the 2nd half and in OT was terrrible. I would bench D. Reed for the entire next game.

I think she actually likes Alabama over Auburn because her BFF Lily feels that way. You know how these girls operate.

Kentucky probably remains No. 1, though.

Late goodmorning Hotties!
Enjoyed the company last night but not the game.
Saw the remnants of 3 snowmen on my walk this morning and still some snow on the ground in a few places.
Is Jacobs paying attention to what is going on with this basketball team? It is a shambles.

Digger, except for the final scores, he probably has no idea what's going on. He's too busy meddling in the football program. He attends all the football games, but I'm sure he doesn't attend the basketball games. I didn't see him anywhere at the UAT game. I guess he thinks all the other programs will run themselves.

10:19 AM

You are probably right Luv but I hope not. The time has come for a change in basketball coaching. He should already have his list made out for the next hire.

No one else will probably find this as funny as I did, but...We stopped at Panera after church and had a cup of soup as our per usual. There were 2 couples in their mid sixties or so sitting at the table next to us. They spent the entire time discussing the tattoos that each of them had just gotten. It was really hysterical and entertaining. But maybe it was my weird sense of humor.

Luv ...

I'm going to call you out for your gratuitous shots at the athletic director.

Many have complained about Jay. You're not the only one. You just happened to be the latest.

OK, so what's he done wrong? Anyone complaining about his handling of football right now? Anyone? He made the baseball change. We'll see how it goes. Hold him responsible for Lebo? Hal Baird hired him. He hired Fortner, too. The gymnastics coach he hired is turning the corner.

Jay didn't fire Lebo two years ago, and that was the correct decision. Lebo won 20-something games last year. I think Jeff doesn't make it to next year.

We're going to complain because he stands on the sideline at the end of football games. I'd say about 90 percent of the ADs in the U.S. do that.

The only fair questions regarding Jay was the departure of David Marsh, and I'm not sure Jay's hands were all that dirty, and the deal with UnderArmour, which I think helps hamper basketball.

As for Tuberville, Jay either: a) fired Tommy (the right thing) or b) was forced to pay him the buyout because of what a trustee did.

Was he ready for the job when he got it? Maybe, maybe not. I understand why he got the job, but I think Jay is growing into the job. Jay makes an easy punching bag for those who don't like the powers that be. But there were always be "the powers that be" whether they are the current ones or the new ones.

Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

I'm not privy to ANY inside info., so I just call 'em like I see 'em. I don't think JJ and TJ have to be standing on the sidelines at every single football game. I have only been to a few bball games - one of them being the in state rival - and I didn't see him JJ at any of them. To me - a lowly fan that knows nothing about the inner workings - this says that football is more important. I don't want to hear that the football program brings in more money than the other sports combined. All programs should be important and the AD should show interest in all of them by at the very least attending some games. I, personally, have no monetary stake in all of this, so it really doesn't matter to me who the coach is. I'm just a lowly fan stating my opinion on a blog.

Just for fun, here's the salaries of the SEC hoops coaches.

1. John Calipari, Kentucky, $3.9 million
2. Billy Donovan, Florida, $3.5 million
3. Bruce Pearl, Tennessee, $2.4 million
4. Anthony Grant, Alabama, $1.8 million
5. Mark Fox, Georgia, $1.3 million
6. Trent Johnson, LSU, $1.2 million
7. Rick Stansbury, Miss. State, $1.2 million
8. Kevin Stallings, Vanderbilt, $981,000
9. Darrin Horn, South Carolina, $800,000
10. Andy Kennedy, Ole Miss, $800,000
11. John Pelphrey, Arkansas, $795,000
12. Jeff Lebo, Auburn, $750,000

What does this say? Where should we be? Discuss among yourselves.

I know we just spent a boatload of dinero on a new arena but I'm still left wondering if we're really committed to basketball when I see those salaries. It will be an intersting offseason to say the least. If we're going to pay at the bottom of the conference, why build a new arena?

7:50 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

i may be wrong, but I think football HC is a much more labor intensive position than basketball HC. Based on that potentially erroneous assumption, I think all the SEC schools are getting ripped off to some extent by their bball coaches.

Looking at that list of salaries, I'd say the top 3 are being paid for their accomplishments, the next 3 were hired since the new TV deal, the next two have been around awhile and have garnered numerous raises over time, and the remaining four are trying to save money.

As far as the Lynyrd Skynyrd selection at the Daddy-Daughter dance, I would have preferred one of their other tunes that might be a lot more appropriate for a Bama tie-in.

I'm thinking maybe "That Smell".

8:30 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Jet You get what you pay for. Lebo is being paid what he is worth. I thought when he came on board that he would show improvement and get raises accordingly. Well he didn't and Auburn was smart in not pumping his salary up.

8:33 PM
Blogger Jet said...

My sense is for Auburn to be serious we'll have to double the head coach's salary.

Otherwise, we're "taking a chance."

If we're a mind to steal within the league, then it seems to me Darrin Horn and Andy Kennedy are "get-able."

I think both are pretty good coaches. But there are other folks to look at.

9:03 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I have said this before and will say it again. Auburn needs a guy with a personality. He needs to be charismatic and fiery. Auburn can't recruit in basketball players with it's name. We need a coach that can recruit. Combine a charismatic guy with the new facilities and we could be a top 25 or better program every year.

I really like the possibilities of Chuck Persons. I don't know a lot about his personality, but I have read and heard good things.

Person's coaching experience is in the pros. Can he recruit and teach fundamentals to kids? Hiring him would be a risk but maybe it's time to take a risk. I doubt he'd be worse than Lebo and at least he's an Auburn man.

Speaking of Chuck Persons. I have always liked him and thought he was a great basketball player and Auburn man but I do not think we need to take a chance on an unproven coach at the college level. We need someone with a good track record at the college level.

8:32 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Digger, we need a coach that knows how to coach young men, and teach them how to play together as a team. I nominate Gene Chizik.

I can also see the Ditka comparisons starting if CGC starts realizing the type of success we all want.

I think we need someone that loves Auburn in here coaching and someone that will go around and get the fans out to attend and some enthusiasm in doing so. It will be tough for Auburn to get a quality coach, so any person you hire will be a risk, why not risk it on someone you know loves the program and openly wants a chance to someday coach at Auburn? Could it be any worse than what it is now? This is close to a low in my lifetime of Auburn basketball, at least one that I remember so Jet don't thrown Tommy in the mix :).

8:52 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I agree we need someone to teach and lead the team as a coach but great players don't make good coaches. In fact most of the time they don't do well at all with a few exceptions. Auburn can not attract the very best but should be able to find someone who can compete.
