Furlough Day Seven: Saturday

I am on a mandated and unpaid furlough as required by the Advertiser's parent company, Gannett. As such, I am not permitted to participate in blog-related activities for one week.

So we have these pre-loaded entries. That's all.

The upside? I'll be back TOMORROW. That's good news, right?

Have a nice day.

Tate's on furlough, unable to update the blog and forfeiting a week's pay for the pleasure.

I think he's have a great time with it, Edwin.

I'm sure he loves putting four years into the HABOTN, creating inertia, then he has to have the rally killed by his organization.

We need to get ready for the return of Jay. Someone needs to sweep up. Who left all those puppet parts laying all over the place?

11:10 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Maybe Jay can dig in to the Lebo situation (recruiting stuff) when he comes back.
I spoke with someone today about it and I don't have to check with three others, and maybe this was mentioned, but I think Lebo has been banned form talking with the AAU guy at all. Even though the NCAA sanction thing ran out in 2006, I am told he can not work with him on recruiting kids. The guy is also an AU fan so that makes it worse for us fans. Also, AU has the deal with Under Armour and they don't run any bball camps. Nike runs most of them, so those kids get steered to teams that use Nike.

11:28 AM
Blogger wtc said...

I said it before, but I think Lebo gets at least 1 and probably 2 more years. Next years team will be better than this years team. Au has no point guard (Reed is a 2 guard with a bad attitude) (6 tech fouls this year). Hargrove, when focused is OK, but the next day it looks like he needs ridalin (no offense to those that take it). he just doesn't stay focused. The guys on the bench are getting playing time and will be OK next year. If Lebo is let go, It will take Au bball 4-5 more years of looking bad before the next coach can turn it around.

Mark it down soccer hotties. Man United ain't winning any trophies this year. Well, they might (might) win one next weekend, but that'll be it. Seanzie's Arsenal may even pip them to second in the league.

Embarassed by Everton today. For shame for shame.

12:21 PM
Blogger Miller said...

The biggest thing we disagree on, WTC, is that's next year's team will be better with Lebo. The guys on the bench are not getting meaningful minutes, and we still won't have a PG next year or any size, nor will they hit free throws and they still won't have an offensive identity beyond looking discombobulated. Defense has gotten worse this year, because I don't think Lebo has control over his players. There is no discipline and everytime I see Lebo on the sidelines, he has this 'i don't care' look.

12:38 PM
Blogger Norm said...

wtc - that was a mighty fine pace for the distance. I couldn't keep that up for more than a few miles (back when I was able to run regularly).

12:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

wtc, I can't really see us being improved in terms of men's basketball next season. We graduate 4 starters. To keep Lebo around for one more year would be foolish. If you are going to keep him for one more, you may as well give him two, because next year will not likely be an improvement. Either cut bate now or wait two years, but don't waste next season on a team that is very unlikely to improve enough to justify keeping Lebo.

I can't fill the blog with why AU will be better next year, but:
1. The senior starters we have are not good. Maybe Waller can play for another D1 school in this state.
2. Getting rid of them may help our play.
3. Au has a very good Juco point guard coming in next year.
4. We are short on height but will make up for it by players that will hustle and want to play. this group is just mailing it in.
5. Despite the lack of talent, AU has lost 9 games by 5 or fewer points.
6. Lebo has been hamstrung by the things the athletic department has put on him from a recruiting standpoint.

2:52 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I am not going to plead for Lebo to stay. I am just saying that despite how many feel on here. he will be the coach next year. He still needs to sell the program to the students, and probably won't, which is an issue JJ must address.

I would bet that if he does win early next year the students and others will start coming out to watch. There are ALOT of fair weather bball fans. I hate they are losing as much as anyone, but I still go to many games. I will be there tonight.

2:55 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

But why would form count for anything. It seems to me the best form is the one that makes you go the farthest.

I've competed (poorly) in water ski jumping, which is pretty similar, and there are no style points.

3:13 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I agree, wake. Who cares about form. The purpose of ski jumping is simple.. fly farther than the others.

Does this mean we should expect them to start judging the downhill race and avg "style points" with the skiers' times? Please say no.

I agree with WTC on this one. Auburn will be better next year. The incoming class has some talent and there is talent on the bench. Lebo has finally started to play some of the bench in meaningful situations.

WTC you are also correct on the AAU thing. That is severely hurting recruiting. Most of the bb talent plays AAU ball and not being able to talk to them makes it almost impossible to recruit.

Lebo is a good coach. Don't under estimate the power of the new arena on recruiting and watch what Lebo can do with talent.

4:12 PM
Blogger Jet said...

It would be hard for this team to be worse. There will be some energy with the arena ... regardless of the coach. WTC may very well be right regarding Lebo.

I think he's a better coach than he's given credit for, but I think he's lost this team. I would prefer to change.

Even so, I wholeheartedly agree with WTC regarding the fair-weather fans. Auburn fans support football no matter what. Auburn fans turn their backs on basketball at the first sign of a problem. I bear a part of the blame ... I've been once this season.

4:31 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I never played organized Bball and can't discuss X's and O's, but the lack of discipline, consistently poor foul shooting and inconsistent defensive effort seem like stuff that should be blamed on the coach. Maybe not for one season, but when the problem is every season, I think so.

Coach Lebo has had some terrible luck, but 6 years is a lot of time to overcome bad luck.

If this year's subs aren't good enough to best out some weak seniors, then how can they be good enough to field a team with good players next year. If the youngsters had beat out the seniors and got full game experience this year, then maybe the argument for next year would hold more water.

I hate the what have you done for me lately, but in this case nothing has been done ..much less lately.

Is the AAU thing in basketball like the baseball travel-ball ...or the East Cobb League? AU recruits for baseball in the East Cobb league. I realize the past issues, but if errybody else is doin' it....

The team lost a ton last year with Barber, Barrett, Quartez.

Knox and Lett have not developed at all.

However, Gabriel was starting to get some PT. Ross and Armstrong are projects, but developing. Malone has all the physical tools, but he as been a bit of a disappointment. He has to work on the jumper.

The offense will run through Sullivan next year. That has to be an improvement over Reed.

If the Salter kid is as good as the users on Rivals rate him, and if Kemp has some semblence of an offensive game the future could be bright.

Waller and Hargrove are going to missed. Losing Reed will be addition by subtraction.

Tay Waller has been my favorite player to watch these last two years.

His injury really hurt this team early on.

I love to watch him shoot.

6:22 PM
Blogger stupup74 said...

Kenny Gabriel was counted on to do more than he has this year. I think he has some talent.

He, Sullivan, Malone were all rivals 150 guys when they were recruited.

Kemp is the first 150 big guy we have gotten since Barber.

Lebo may be a nice guy but I'm not sure about him being a good coach. Talent aside, the team doesn't look like they've been taught how to play, certainly not how to play as a team. Their ball handling is poor and they can't do something as fundamental as hit free throws.

I don't mind them losing, it's how bad they look doing it.

10:16 PM

Auburn and Florida are so far ahead of the others in swimming it's ridiculous. Anyone know how we're looking for the NCAA this year?

Exciting game to watch tonight at the Beav. I was most leased to see Reed be put on the bench early on. I think that helped this team a lot. Several of the young guys got playing time. AU will be counting on Kemp to fill post man role next year, but I think he can do it. As mentioned earlier, Sullivan will be the man next year. I think he is ready to handle it. He hustles all night while on the court.

10:29 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Nova-Free throw shooting is something that a player has to want to practice on. Look at Shaq. He is paid millions and still can't hit them.

I will say Lebo is one of the better X and O guys out there in the SEC. He isn't the best, but I think he is very good. Talent just isn't there to run the offense the way it should be run.

(When Reed was benched tonight, several fans in my section were (lowly) applauding. They thought it was a good move.

Sullivan - 70/81=86.4%
Team w/o Sullivan - 381/583=65.4% Team with Sullivan - 451/664=67.9%

Best FT shooter in the league and the worse FT shooting team in the league.

Congrats to all Auburn sports today.

And credit where credit is due with Auburn basketball. A lot of times this team gets (fairly) disparaged by many on here (including me), but I was impressed with them tonight.

As the second half wore on, I thought to myself, "I've seen this film before. Play well in the first half and lose the plot in the second half."

But they really played some (dare I say) sound basketball down the stretch to win this one. Inspired even. Made some free throws tonight as well. Don't think we're about turn the corner or anything, but tonight, they deserve praise for playing some good basketball.

Free throw shooting can be taught. The emphasis on practice has to come from the coach. I've seen too many games where the bball team doesn't even look like it's trying.

Lebo's had six years. These are his players. This is what he can do. I don't think that a new arena and a new class are suddenly going to change that.

I'm don't think I'm asking for much, just a team that looks like it knows what it is doing on the court and can occasionally make the NCAA.
