Is Tyrik Rollison out?

Hey everyone. So we were talking yesterday about the quarterback situation. I told you all that I thought Clint Moseley would make it, that he appeared to be the most likely successor to Cam Newton/Neil Caudle.

This came as a surprise to some of you. Tyrik Rollison? you wondered.

Here's what was posted on Tyrik Rollison's Facebook page late last night:

Here's what was posted this morning:

Kids sometimes say things they don't mean. We'll see what happens.

Ouch!!! Rollison may be saying things he doesn't mean, but I doubt it. There was a reason he wasn't being recruited by the big name schools. I suspect this has a lot to do with it.

I'm sure bringing in Cam Newton was a blow to his chances at some immediate playing time. I will not be surprised if there is some more attrition from the QB position before the start of this season. We have a very crowed QB position....

Not worried about it. If Chris Todd can set passing records without spring practice and coming off a major surgery...

By the way, Chris Todd graduates as Auburn's 2nd highest rated QB (minimum 400 passes attempted.)

Todd was a much better QB than many gave him credit for being. Many at Texas Tech wanted him to be the starter instead of Harrell. While he wasn't going to be a star, he was very solid in terms of decision making and the strength of his arm was underestimated. The biggest criticism I would have of Todd is you didn't see him thread the needle. He was more about good ball placement, but not the mid range passes where you have to get the ball there quick.

let the bammers start call for sanctions because chiz if funneling reject AU players back to his old school for texas oil money.

Disappointed. I've been told to no longer Express any QB or player for that matter. So I will hope the best QB wins the job between Mosley and Newton.

I guess this will allow us to sign one of the top QB's from this next year's class as we were looking to do.

I hope we get Driskel in this next class.

I do believe Rollison likely had maturity issues.

I am hoping Moseley will be a solid backup to Newton this season. That is obviously just a big guess because I have not seen Moseley play enough to really have a clue how good he could be.

9:37 AM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

Does this free up a scholarship?

9:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

chip chip, to a large extent you are right about Todd being similar to Cox, although Cox was more talented, better at the medium range passes, and one of the best QBs we have had in terms of late drives. Cox also would have his occasional bad streaks. When he had a bad day, he really had a bad day. Cox didn't throw the long ball as well as Todd and my impression is his arm strength wasn't as good. In terms of accuracy, Cox was the most accurate QB we have had in a long time, probably back to the Dye era.

chip chip, that is how I would call it. Neither Todd or Cox would beat you running the ball either. Both were solid, but not great. I would take Cox over Todd in a two minute drill, but that is about it. I would say Cox was better, but not drastically better. Cox should also get bonus points for durability. He bounced better than any other QB we have had.

digger, that is my opinion too. Any player that doesn't want to be at Auburn should pack now and save time.

I really wonder what the issue is with Rollison. Surely he realized there would be competition for the QB position and it wouldn't be handed to him.

9:52 AM
Blogger Howard said...

I hate to see a kid decide to leave, but I do agree with the philosophy that, if I remember correctly, Chizik espoused his first week back on campus: I'm thinking about the kids that are here. The kids here and willing to work hard to be here are the ones that the coaches (and fans) should be focused on.

9:53 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Exactly, Lowcountry. I have much more respect for Kodi Burns than I do for players that can't stand the heat and leave. I have no patience for quiters.

I do believe the problem many of these high rated players have is that they are no longer the big man on campus when they come to college. Welcome to reality, kids. Athletic ability isn't enough to make you a starter at a major college program. It takes work.

Jay G discovers evidence that Rollison reads the HABOTN?

As for academics, that is part of it. I could pretty much sleep my way through high school classes and pass. College is different.

College requires self discipline to succeed. My teachers in college didn't give a rip whether I showed up for class or not. The discipline required with football players is even rougher, because they have less free time.

Blogger Unknown said...

If the kid wants to be a success in college he will talk with the coaches and come up with a plan. If a player said, hey coach, I have academic issues. I really want to be a part of the football team, but I need to get the academics straightened out first, I am sure the coaches would work with him and get him the help he needs.

10:13 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

SFC - No doubt the coaches would do everything in their power to help a kid out. The player would have to have the desire and drive to ask for help and go forward.

10:16 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

This is actually interesting in terms of Kodi Burns too. The only way I can see Kodi playing QB again is for us to be short handed at QB. Even if Rollison leaves, we have plenty of depth at QB. Now, if one more QB left, then things would get more interesting.

If Tyrik dosen't have the intestinal fortitude to buckle down ask for help and stay at Auburn what kind of leader would he be on the field? I guess I shouldn't jump to conclusions but that is my last question/statement on this matter.

10:26 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jason, exactly. Many overvalue their worth and think quitting will teach someone something. It reminds me of a guy I worked with back in the 80s in Madison, Alabama. He was fairly new. We were working collecting and stacking material from a machine that required you to be very quick. Suddenly he said he wasn't putting up with this crap and left. They had his replacement working after lunch and we never missed a beat. I am sure he thought he taught someone something. Basically he just taught our employer that this wasn't the job for him.

10:27 AM
Blogger Howard said...

The only person that typically learns a lesson from quitting is the person who quits. Usually that lesson is "oops - I guess I wasn't that important after all". It's true at work, too. So... back to work!

10:30 AM
Blogger michael said...

Let's lay off bashing Tyrik. For all we know, Chizik approached him and told him he was behind Trotter and Mosely and it would be in his best interest to find another school. Auburn gets an open roster spot, Rollison gets playing time. He may very well have more intestinal fortitude and a better work ethic than all of us and our mothers combined.

10:33 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hopefully Tyrik will work with the coaches to do what is best for him and not handle things publicly.

The most dispensable people are those that consider themselves indispensable.

Michael could be right. I have seen more positive comments from coaches on Trotter and Moseley than on Rollison, although I am sure all the QBs will have their shot in the spring. Some will definitely be eliminated before the fall starts.

I am not worried either, so far as he has been is a practice player, potential, but no on the field work, our quarterback postion with newton is crowded.

1. Newton-Jr.
2. Caudle-Sr.
3. Trotter-Soph.
4. Mosley-Fr.
*5. Rollison-Fr.

Plus I know is interested in getting one QB next year and Caudle is the only one for sure that is leaving after next season.

While I would love to see Tyrik stay and compete for playing time, I can't call him a quitter or hate on him for leaving (if he is, in fact, leaving.)

Look at it from a grown-up job perspective (as opposed to playing a very, very important sport): if you are in a job where you know your chances of advancement are limited and you're offered an opportunity somewhere else for more (or even the same) money, how many would not go?

God forbid anyone have a thought, or an opinion, and post it on Facebook, a message board or a blog. Let alone a 19 year old. Or a 46 year old. Certainly no one around here posts without counting the cost.

If Tyrik leaves, it's not because he's a quitter, and for anyone to imply such, shame on you. When we signed Cam Newton, he realized what the score was. This isn't a kid who grew up in Opelika dreaming of coming to Auburn. He's a guy who came to a place because of an opportunity -- and that opportunity isn't going to pan out.

If he's not happy at Auburn and wants to try something different, then good luck and Godspeed.

Some will say he hasn't done a thing at Auburn. I will disagree. His signing, which hasn't resulted in contributions on the field, did help prop up our signing class and helped give us some momentum when we badly needed it. So let the Express roll on in Auburn, at Sam Houston or wherever.

I hope he finds the happiness he wants and the maturity he apparently needs.

Jhag = Franchise player or potential quitter? Discuss. Not really, Jhag. You're not a quitter.

But here's the point. Auburn essentially "quit" on Rollison by signing Newton. That's OK. It happens all the time -- in college football programs and in the workplace. The coaches apparently came to the conclusion the guy isn't the answer they had hoped he was. So Auburn moved on. It's hypocritical to not let Tyrik move on (with the caveat that he doesn't trash us on the way out).

It's hypocritical to call the guy a quitter if he wants to go somewhere else when they've essentially sent the message to him that he don't think he's good enough. Spare me the one in a million "if he were of real character he would stay and show them." I submit 99.8 percent of the world doesn't do in the workplace. They go find something else to do.

What if Kodi had decided to leave last year? Many around here would have been relieved. Or what if he decides to leave this year? Would that make him a quitter, too?

Auburn didn't quit on Rollison by signing Newton. Rollison has no experience and would have two years as possibly the starter after Newton leaves. During those two years he could have gotten the experience to be the starter. Experience means a lot at QB.
