A little chat with Gus Malzahn
Hey everyone. As the Hard-Core HOTTIES® know, I have been trackin' and chasin' Gus Malzahn for a few days. I finally caught that rascal last night.
I turned most of our chat into a Q-and-A piece that ran in Thursday's editions of the Montgomery Advertiser.
Though I implore you to follow the link above, here is a snippet for the link-impared:
Q: Do you ever add plays or ideas from outside sources or do you formulate new elements from scratch?
A: If there's something out there that fits our talent and could make us better, we're always going to look at it. We want to get better, but it's more about evaluating the defenses, the SEC defenses. I evaluate the defensive coordinators. I try to get in their minds and understand how they think.
The main opponents, the teams where you really want to win, are the ones I watch all year. I search for ways to exploit them all the time. You need to know everything about these coordinators. I want to know how they think so I can predict what they'll do in a certain situation.

Substance
Or not
I had already read the article thanks to THT's link this morning.
There are plenty of casual HOTTIES® who don't delve into the comments section.
So now they'll get their morning present of prose.
I'm sure this will nourish them.
Or make them hungrier.
I for one have engorged on the substance and my belly is full and I am satisfied.
Why would they not adventure into the comment section? Its where the magic happens
It is a nice mid-morning snack. A 2nd Breakfast, if you will.
I asked this on the earlier post, but JGT put up nourishment so probably no one will see it.
Would it be wrong to wear my Tiger Woods hat with a Nike Golf Polo from Toyota?
Middle aged women are HAWT.
stupup,
It would be so wrong, it would be right.
ehyou,
My hubby things so
My wife bought me a t-shirt that read: "I (heart) hot moms"
Middle-aged women are included in that demo. So, yeah, I concur.
Nice substance, Cincy (and JGT)
Anyone else watching the merry-go-round they're calling the "Health Care Summit"?
heavens no, Scoats. I don't think I could take it.
....ok, is there a live web feed?
Jay- -did you get a look at his intelligence folder? Is it one of those brown legal folders with the tassle, bulging with odd scraps of paper, or is it a nice tidy binder that some admin typed everything up and color tagged it?
OR- -it could just be a folder that says "UAT" on it.
We ought to hold a Health Care Summitt.
The Lady Vols' coach could make all the decisions. Anyone who disagrees may take it up with her, though I strongly suggest you avoid angering Ms. Summitt.
Cincy,
My laughter had all to do with context, and nothing to do with your, or any other woman's, age.
apparently so
linkie
Gus would not let me peek at the dossier. It's Level 6 classified.
Excellent article JGT! Like Gus, I'm old school. I have to write everything down too.
I'm so excited for football season.
Sorry, the question about a link. Here is the link to the white house's viewing page
Hmmm, sounds like Malzahn is a bit more of a psychologist than I realized.
PF,
Just picking at you. I must say I am enjoying middle age MUCH more than I did high school. Maybe not quite as much as college, but it is all good.
Did stupup say you could borrow his outfit? I could totally see you wearing that!
Excellent article Homer, the phrase that jumped out at me was
"It's something I feel like I should do every day," he said. "If you're not improving, you're sliding backward. You can't be in neutral."
That second sentence will fit in any business or sport team.
Pat Summit is amazing. Every few years the Lady Vols play at UTC. I went out there one night basically just to watch her.
UT was just killing UTC, but when UTC would make a little run Summit would call T.O., chew on a couple of girls with that scowl, pace in a circle and then scribble on the white board. Then UT would go on a run until the process repeated it self.
I guess you had to be there to understand how funny/amazing she was. She demands perfection. She is also an incredible strategist. I believe she would be in the top 1/3 of coaches if she coached men.
BTW, some UT fans up here have a weird fantasy of Pat Summit and Bruce Pearl getting together and producing a basketball cyborg baby. I only wish I was making that up.
stupup - I know you're not making it up, because I've heard the same thing here in North AL
Did Mr. Tate really say "rascal?"
I smell popcorn and whiskey.
ehyou,
Where are you that you are smelling this?
cincy...
it's my proximity to mr. j-z
But is he a rascally rascal?
got ya, ehyou.
Can y'all tell I really don't want to clean house? But, if I am going to stay a kept woman, I really should clean at least every once in awhile :(
Good stuff G.
What's being said in the photo with this thread?
"In the first and the third quarters: Neil, you get to hold the clipboard; Kodi, you get to flip the numbers on the sign. In the second and fourth quarters, you get to switch places. And someone remind me to tell Barrett that his mom is responsible for the juice boxes and orange slices for the Arkansas State -- preferably for halftime and after the game."
I couldn't help but notice that the US Ski Team is on this week's cover of Sports Illustrated.
The US Ski Team hasn't won an Olympic Medal since. Bode and Lindsey DQ'd in the GS while medal favorites like Ligety and Mancuso have had bad luck.
Leave it to SI to ruin a good thing.
I saw where a speed skater was disqualified because he forgot to switch lanes half way through. The Olympics always have these amazing tails of someone not winning because they make a bonehead decision after years of practice.
Since Malzahn was so hard to catch up with maybe he is the real FAH.
Steve...it wasn't his fault. He was heading for the right lane and then his coach told him to get over in the other lane, which was the wrong one.
The skater had it right and would have won gold but for his coach's wrong decision.
Probably safe to assume that coach won't have a job when he goes back to the Netherlands.
E-Bro, thanks. I hadn't heard that. It is pretty incredible, but not unusual for the Olympics. There is always some strange tail like that.
I keep wondering what the story was last season with the competition between Burns and Caudle. I mean, out of the spring supposedly Gus was telling them they were neck and neck, while now Kodi isn't even a consideration at QB.
I suppose Gus could have learned more about Kodi and why he would better fit in as a wide receiver, or that neither Caudle or Burns were close to being the type of QB Malzahn wanted and Kodi was just the one with the talent to play another position.
I must admit that I am a little more positive on Kodi after Malzahn's comments here. I do believe they think he can contribute as a wide receiver, which is great.
Yes, there is a lot of receiving talent on this team, but a smart receiver can make a place for themselves event if there are more athletic receivers on the team. Hopefully Kodi will turn into one of those guys.
I hear Kodi's gunning for long snapper this year.
Kodi should transfer to TTU if he wants to be a long snapper. Sorry SFC that was a little jab at your boy XCTT.
I do hope they find a way to get Kodi involved, but as the wildcat QB, they need to work on it. The RFYLK works less and less as people realize he ain't going to throw the ball, and even when he occasionally does, it isn't something to worry about.
I'm sick of this pro/anti gambling stuff. It's the only thing Dothan news has covered for the past 4 months.
I heart gambling hot moms.
hey, now that's something I can get behind
hmmm...maybe that came out the wrong way
Move Kodi to safety, his skillset hasn't translated to impacting offense at the college level for some reason
I heart hot moms. One in particular.
I heart moms with recruiting news.
As for CTT being my boy, I do not know why some got that impression, but to each his own, I suppose.
Occasionally I just go watch this video and giggle. Of course, he gets a one point deduction for saying the University of Auburn.
But a ten point addition for choosing Auburn!
Two words: The King!
Two more: Get some!
Jet - that was just mean.
I can't help but occasionally watch some Cam Newton video, too. It is amazing how quickly he goes from looking like a QB to looking like a big runningback.
I keep having to remind myself that he is actually bigger than Jason Campbell, but runs even better, and Campbell was a decent runner as a QB.
I finally had time to read your article about Malzahn, Jay G. Excellent work!
Speaking of offensive coordinators...
Look who's on the front page of the ESPN College Football section:

Everyday Should Be Saturday's sometime-contributor Doug Gillett (of the famous UGA blog, Hey Jenny Slater) has released the contents of the Double-Secret Malzahn File Folder
So, how does Jay G feel about people copying and pasting his work?
JGT...
You have been chasing him for days and you only asked one question??
Ok, guys, really, this is all you could do? I vacuum a house, clean 4 bathrooms, do 4 loads of clothes and get supper going and 7 posts is it?! You'd think some people on this blog work for a living :)
Off to dust. It's the hot thing to do :)
Cincy, when you're finished at your house, drive down CR11 to Pelham and...
What do you mean, Luv? The excerpt they published was clearly in a quote box, and they provided a link to the story.
weagle, sorry didn't notice the link. My mistake.
weagle...
I've had Hey Jenny Slater bookmarked for a while. That dude is seriously funny.
The dossier spoof is hilarious.
btw - purple jesus dude is freakin awesome
Last night Ole MIss scored 43 points in the final 11 minutes.
You have to work hard on defense to allow 43 points in 43 minutes. The other team should have been too tired to score.
That EDSBS post is brilliant. Outstanding in every way. The "email" brought tears to my eyes.
Nobody effs with him, ehyou. ;)
I like that Gus is constantly watching film and trying to get the edge any way possible. Hopefully we'll see some improvment in playcalling and execution this year.
"It'd be nice to have a couple years with one guy running the offense."
Equals ======
Cam Newton as our starter. The job is his to lose.
