Rollison really is gone

Hey everyone. Just a quick update that Tyrik Rollison's father, Michael Kelly, told Jeffrey Lee over at AuburnSports.com that a transfer to Sam Houston State is imminent.

I have a call in to Kelly as well.

Rollison, as you'll recall, was the presumed crown jewel of Auburn's 2009 signing class. He ran into trouble in November, though, and was suspended indefinitely prior to Auburn's game in the Outback Bowl. Rollison didn't make the trip to Tampa. He won't make any trips now.

Sam Houston State has seen this before. Former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar, who was busted in a pay-for-play scam, played for the Bearkats in 2007 and '08. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He plays for the New York Giants.

Auburn now has four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster:
Neil Caudle, senior
Cam Newton, junior
Barrett Trotter, sophomore
Clint Moseley, redshirt freshman

UPDATE @3 p.m. CST: I spoke briefly with Rollison's father, who was far more reluctant to talk than I expected. ``I wouldn't say it was an easy decision. It was tough, but it was time to move on," Michael Kelly said. After that, though, Kelly said he'd have no additional comment.

  4. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I will not allow the actions (or inactions) of 17 - 20-something young men negatively impact my life. I changed my mind plenty during those years on many things. Some of those things I now sometimes I wish I'd done differently but that's water under the bridge. The only time I expect to be impacted by the decisions or actions of a boy that age will be in 14 some years when F4* gets to that age. Until then, I'll root for these kids to win every game while wearing AU.

  5. LOL Jhag - that was classic - followed closely behind by JGT.... You bunch of quitters

  6. Upon the arrival of Cam,
it was time to go to Sam.

Let's all admit wrong and confess,
that we were hasty with the Rollison Express

Please wish Tyrik all the best,
as he flies from War Eagle's nest.

Most of all, don't be bitter
    and call him a quitter.

  7. Monica is going to play QB for SHSU?!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Monica is more like Marco Killingsworth. I'd compare Tyrik to that guy who called Sean an idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  9. What ever happened to monica anyhow?

  10. She went to the dark side - Alabama Booster now......

  11. Good luck to Tyrik. I do hope he does well and I don't think we have the full story. The reason for the suspension would be interesting, although I do think ChizCo is correct in not disclosing it. Young kids like this don't deserve the full cavity search on everything they do while in college.

  13. So, the question is, how many QBs does Kodi have to wack to get back into the QB competition?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Honestly, this is a good thing. It frees up some room for stud QB in this upcoming recruiting class.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We were definitely going after one QB in this next recruiting class. This may mean they will try to sign two.

    ReplyDelete
  16. SteveFC = Funny

    Love the Kodi comment.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I believe that answer is now 4, Steve.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good luck Tyrik Rollison. Hope you find what you are looking for. You have made a decision right or wrong it is yours and you are the one who will have to live with it. I hope for your sake it was the right one.

  19. Hello Arky QB and QB from one of the Gwinnett Schools.

PS, I still think Moseley has HUGE upside.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm hoping Tyrik's decision was based on seeing Cam practicing and realizing he wouldn't play for two years.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Kodi for QB 2010!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I assume that TR's scholarship slot is unusable for the 2010 season (even if we could find substance/quality to fill it at this point). Is that an accurate assumption?

    ReplyDelete
  23. jhag & jtate crack me up.

Writer Tate - please let TR's dad know we wish them the very best.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lowcountry, unless we loose another QB, I don't see a need for another QB. Four is a good number considering none of them are incoming Freshmen.

I do find it ironic that the hype over Rollison was similar to the hype over Kodi. In both case I think people got ahead of themselves with expectations.

Even Newton may not be everything we hope. I hope that he is, but you never can tell. Playing in JUCO has to be a lot different than playing in the SEC. He could likely outrun anyone his size in JUCO. In the SEC he will see players bigger than he is that can outrun him.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Lowcountry - I think we are full for the 2010 class. In fact, I'm not sure if we aren't still over the overall limit of 85 (assuming 25 of our 28 2010 signees enroll this fall).

Anybody got the latest permutation of our total current # of schollies that are in use?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I wish Tyrik well. He came to Auburn with good intentions, but things didn't work out for him there.

I'm ready for spring practice to start.

    ReplyDelete
  27. THT, I agree. I hope Rollison does well. It may be that he needs a different environment.

    ReplyDelete
  28. THT, we only signed 27. Chiz has one spot in his pocket.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I find it highly likely that we won't have 25 of the signees actually show up in the fall. You always loose some. We should be fine as long as that number doesn't drop drastically. The five signees that counted against 2009 meant a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I really liked Eddie's comment earler.

    "Tyrik Rollison=Facebook Legend"

At least he made headway in one way or another at Auburn; both on facebook and at Skybar. As a redshirt Sophomore, I still have a year to make myself a facebook legend.

Also, thanks for the welcomes. This blog can usually produce a few good laughs, and insightful thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think with Rollison gone now, and that extra spot from only 27 instead of 28 signees, we end up in perfect shape. No gray shirts needed.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Steve is right, sort of. 27 is the correct number. However, if at least 25 qualify, there ain't nuthin' in Chizik's pocket but a few million$

I've heard no confirmation that more than 2 would not qualify.

    ReplyDelete
  33. also a place for inciting thoughts

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good luck to Tyric. I hope SH State is a good fit and that he has a lot of success in the classroom and on the field.

    War Eagle, all!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That should have been Tyrik. I don't wish any success for Tyric.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I had so forgot about being Hawt, snorting and Rawking....thanks for the laugh Jay!
Tyrik reminds me Lache.......maybe best they move on.

    ReplyDelete
  37. We can only enroll 25 this fall. Whether we sign 27,(the current number) pick up another to make it 28 signees or whatever, we still can enroll only 25 in school on scholarship this fall. If all 27 qualify, two will have to greyshirt or go elsewhere. I suppose the coaches have that handled.

The 85 limit won't be a problem this fall. Minus Rollison and including all 25 new guys, we'll only have 87. At least two will drop out or transfer over the summer. Never fails.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That truly is the way to look at this. If Auburn wasn't the right place for Tyrik, Tyrik wasn't going to be the right player for Auburn. Hopefully it will work out best for both. Also, this will increase the number of reps the QBs that will be here will get in the spring, which works for me.

As for the 25 versus 27 thing, it wouldn't shock me if there were more than 2 not qualify, although I think I have only heard of a couple that are border line. One is one of the DTs. I don't recall the other.

Last year we only got something like 18 or 19 of our signees actually on the team when the season began. You just never can tell what will happen.

Like I say, the 5 that counted against 2009 really mean a lot. I do believe we will be fine. Yea, if only 18 or 19 actually are on the team when the season starts, it would be a concern, but not nearly as much so as last season. I have never seen the type of depth issues we had last season on defense.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am certain the coaches have already identified the potential gray shirts. We did sign a couple of lower rated last minute guys on signing day. I am sure that they were told that if....

    ReplyDelete
  40. ExMike - thanks for that tally.

Too bad NCAA won't grant AU a slightly higher scholarship limit. If we could add 3, then when last available scholly is awarded, everyone could yell...

    BEASLEY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous2:23 PM

Too bad that it didn't work out for TR. I wish him well. Last August, Eduardo had convinced me to get my hopes up for the Express. In spite of his transgressions this past Fall, I felt that TR had tremendous promise. TR has a much better throwing motion and accuracy than Cam. Can Gus fix that with Cam? I sure hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Quitter Shmitter...

    ReplyDelete
  43. J-Z, if the quitters' blog isn't working out, you can always quit.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Tyrik Rollison- We barely knew ye

    ReplyDelete
  45. I could be persuaded with some chocolate covered potato chips and bacon.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Can we rename her "Quitstina?"

    ReplyDelete
  47. Go out to work for a few hours and look what happens.

Maybe we get an announced clear winner at QB by the end of spring now. Maybe not. But it just got easier. I wish TR well at SHSU.

    ReplyDelete
  48. wtc, that ought to teach you not to do that again.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I was told yesterday that Eric Smith and Cam Newton were on a ustream talking and someone asked him how far he could throw the ball. He said that with a 5 step drop no one on the team is fast enough to catch the ball before it hits the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That work thing is over rated anyway. However, AU wants tuition money and my wife is high maintenance so I have to work.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If WTC quit working, the sofa industry would collapse. Rooms to Go would have to file for Chapter 11 immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Good news ....Eddie over at HSHSUBOTN has agreed to purchase the remaining Rollison Express gear and heisman campaign marketing material.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So, what do you guys think Auburn's chances are tonight? Or, is it just a guessing game with them these days?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I say they win tonight, based on no real knowledge. That's why I'm Ephemeral.

    ReplyDelete
  55. So any conjecture as to why he took down the facebook posts? If he's leaving at the end of the semester does the Athletic Dept. hold any continuing leverage over him?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Added to the blog front:

UPDATE @3 p.m. CST: I spoke briefly with Rollison's father, who was far more reluctant to talk than I expected. ``I wouldn't say it was an easy decision. It was tough, but it was time to move on," Michael Kelly said. After that, though, Kelly said he'd have no additional comment.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I still don't think Rollison does this if the coaches didn't make it clear that he was way behind on the depth chart in the future. It just doesn't make sense. He would have a great shot at starting as a Junior. At the very worst, it wouldn't hurt to wait another year before he transfers. He must have really pissed them off.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm not sure what happened, but all of a sudden when I refresh the blog, I don't end up at the top of the page! Life's little victories.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Obviously, playing football is more important than being part of the Auburn football team. But, that's ok. Not everyone is Auburn material.

    ReplyDelete
  60. If someone told me I would never do any actual engineering at my job, but just practice engineering and watch others to the real engineering, I would switch jobs too. But then again, I may not be an Auburn Man, so I probably do a lot of things cowardly/like a quitter and so on.

    ReplyDelete
  61. There were some notable prospects here today. Some dude from Gadsden ... among others.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Ephemeral ...

    clap. clap. clap.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jay G ...

    Throwin' out the Faker bait.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Eddie ...

That is good news ... you may be able to finance some of the Mickey Mouse ears ice cream bars for the kids with the proceeds.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I just saw those kids in the hallway. If they're talking to Trooper, I figure I'd better pay attention.

Still missed the names. I'm a failed bloggist.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think he is quitting but not in a completely bad way. He is quitting on Auburn and running from the competition. At least he is going to another school where he can get his degree. I can't say I blame him. Like others have said, if I wasn't going to get a promotion at work then I would move on. This doesn't make Tyrik a bad person, but he is quitting.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I would like to help you JGT but I don't know any players from the Gasden area that are high on the recruiting list or haven't already signed.

    ReplyDelete
  68. There are 2 or 3 out of that area that are going to be highly rated this year, but I don't know their names off the top of my head.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anthony Swain is his name. He plays safety.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Michael, what I meant is that some people just want to play football. Some people want the Auburn experience.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah, but some people might want to get the Auburn experience AND play football, but they are forced to choose. I am sure it is not an easy decision.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The question that begs to be answered is why did he decide to transfer now, right before spring practice. There is more to this due to the timing.

As for Tyrik, I hope je rolls on and does great things. He was a big help to Auburn in recruiting last year and that deserves to be mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Eddie, I get the feeling the coaches didn't want him. I too think the timing is strange.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Michael- agreed, or it is a grade issue that apparently is not getting any better.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Anonymous4:51 PM

Michael's and Eddie's speculations above seem the most logically plausible. ...or he could be homesick.

Making the decision prior to even competing in spring practice is significant.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous4:56 PM

JG ..don't be so hard on yourself.

In order to know all those names would require stalking. Stalking leads to sympathetic fandom. Becoming an AU fan would ruin your objectivity, which you make you a poor bloggist.

    It's a conundrum ..I tell ya.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Grades are an important part of this. It's not often that you hear about quarterbacks with grade problems. Right?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I finally got my interview with Malzahn.

I may or may not post some snippets tonight. I have a cold and feel ... less than stellar.

  85. Wow, at one school in Rhode Island, all the teachers and the principal got fired today. That's 88 people that lost their jobs due to poor performance of the students at the school. Seems harsh, especially considering i know that there had to be some teachers doing everything they could to help their students out. I think that has to be an over-reaction of epic proportions IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  93. y'all are talking crazy. There are only 1s in this game.

    oh, y'all aren't watching hockey?

the timing of this is awful strange also.

This just doesn't go with what I hear, but who am I.

    ReplyDelete
  102. What are you talking about Pat, he is shooting 3/10 that is 30%, you don't get any better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Toyota's marketing campaign to save face isn't all that convincing.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Reed is a 30% career shooter for AU.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Maybe not, but it may not be a bad idea to keep an eye on their stock. They'll be back.

  107. Knox fouls out.

    ReplyDelete
  108. WERk-nothing new about that for this year

    ReplyDelete
  109. No doubt they will recover, they are Toyota. But the commercial with the old couple saying they were handled great and will buy another one is pretty bad imo.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Toyota is being raked over the coals by congress on CNBC one day right after another. They have major issues.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Haven't I seen this game before? I don't understand how they can play so great and then just FALL APART!!!

    ReplyDelete

  118. All cars are at least partially made overseas. You aren't helping anything by "buying American". Buy quality, which encourages quality.

As for jobs going overseas, the government has the most say about that. Listen to the politicians and what they say that would encourage big business and rich people to invest in America. You will quickly see why jobs are headed overseas, just like a lot of my investments.

As for Auburn basketball, we must be right up there in the competition for the first half national championship. Does anyone know where we are ranked?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  125. Wake ...

If you mean the USA hockey team, I can't claim expertise.

If you mean AU basketball, I would say we might could handle a 5th grade team, but that's if Waller stays out of foul trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  126. 63 in the second half? Ummm, that sounds almost impossible. Could we at least stand in front of them and slow them down a bit?

    ReplyDelete
  127. I'm not sure why I typed Jet, I meant to ask THT.

But I got a nice chuckle out of your answer anyways. And I think we can all agree chuckles are a good thing. Not quite as entertaining as a guffaw but a little better than a chortle.

This is from Chris Low regarding TR.

"Rollison was redshirted last season, but was suspended prior to the Outback Bowl. His father told ESPN's Joe Schad that the suspension was due to academics and that Rollison wasn't happy at Auburn. According to his father, Rollison also considered Texas Tech, but didn't want to have to sit out another season."

  142. Good morning, Hotties! I am SO glad I don't have to work tomorrow! I get to sleep in! I may get up at 7:00 a.m., but that's sleeping in for me!

Anyone that had a lead like Auburn had a halftime and then loses by that amount didn't deserve to win. I'm glad I fell asleep right after halftime. Have you Hotties that have been following basketball ever seen a team that was so inconsistent??

    ReplyDelete
  143. morning hotties. decided to get to work 2 hours early to catch up! whew. just in case you didn't know, little league baseball season is heating up! if anyone needs jerseys or anything, holla! i can hook the hotties up!

    ReplyDelete
  144. I'm glad I didn't watch the game last night. That is a sad statement, but one that I'm growing accustomed to during this Coach's era.

I'm ready for spring practice and the QB race. Oh and I'm still not sold on Newton. I need some convincing.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Eddie, I hear ya - taking the wait and see approach this time!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Anonymous7:06 AM

I'm sold on his play on the field. The guy has an arm, and can obviously run. I'm not sold on his alleged rehabilitation. My fear is that he'll be a monster on the field, then do something that gets him suspended before a big game. The guy's not shy and is an outspoken leader. If he can stay healthy and out of trouble he may be solid.

Saying all this, note that I don't believe in football saviors. I'm not looking for the guy to be the next Vince Young, but just a solid QB who gives us a legit pass/run threat.

We'll have talent all over the field so Cam (or whoever is named) just needs to play his part.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Cam Newton Highlight film seems like JaMarcus Russell throwing the ball and Donovan McNabb running it. I hope it works out, but I'll wait and see how it looks when he is out there. It's hard to say that any of our signees are sure things until the get on our field and show their stuff.

Sorry you all can't see that.
    =======================
Is that tongue in cheek or are you serious?

I ask because lately I've been wondering if it's impossible for AU to be consistently good at BBall. I've never seen it. And when you're always bad you begin to wonder what's the common denominator...us. We've had some good teams, but it was always short-lived. So, I'm not sure if you're serious Jay, but if you are I'm sorta with you...

  149. Jason- From following Jay for awhile and from previous comments, I'm pretty sure that it is tongue and cheek talk by Jay G.

I agree with that Eddie...it's hard to know for sure, but with some players you have a better idea of than others.

Like Julio Jones at Bama, you knew if the guy worked hard and stayed out of trouble, he was going to be good. Same with Trent Richardson. I felt the same way with Ronnie Brown as well. After watching him run up and down the field on my high school team in the 1999 GA AAA state championship game, my only consolation was that he was going to AU and he was going to be good.

Some players it doesn't take a genius to see that the only thing standing between them and greatness is themselves.

  151. Jason- I think that is what happened to Rollison. The guy is talented as they come, but apparently he has issues to work out in order to allow him to be the football player he wants to be.

  152. If Cam turns out to be Jamarcus McNabb, I think we'll be happy.

  153. I was too busy balling it up last night to see the game. I just have one question:

HOW IN HADES DOES AN SEC TEAM GIVE UP 63 POINTS IN THE SECOND HALF???????

I can't defend Lebo anymore, he HAS to go.

  154. stupup, just what does "balling it up" mean?

    ReplyDelete
  155. Stupup ...

Ole Miss missed a layup at the buzzer to score 65. Not really.

  156. Luv, some things are better left unsaid. Just sayin

  157. You can't quit Rollison.
    Know why?
    You're fired, that's why.

  159. JGT's Malzahn interview for those too impatient to wait for the link on his new thread today.

Snowing like crazy for the first half of long commute today. Pittsboro (not Pittsburgh) getting dumped on. I regret that it will probably all be gone by the time I drive back through there this afternoon.

  160. Nice article on Gus, JayG. Nothing like substance with your coffee!

For you none-Gumrians, we have a magnet high school basketball team (Brewbaker Tech) here that has made it to the 4 A championship for the first time. What makes this really remarkable is that the school has no gymnasium.

    Go, Brew Tech!

  161. Thanks THT.

Homer Tater-Nice article. Wish you would asked him about the 'beat down' his wife and Mrs. Chizik gave fbomb after the IB.

  162. Morning Hotties

I no longer live in Alabama so have no dog in the fight, but I've heard Ron Sparks on 3 different radio shows over the last few days and he hasn't been able to properly pronounce "statistics" yet. If I had a vote in the governor's race there, that would really get to me. But, it's frequently the little things like that which tend to annoy me more than anything else.

  163. Norm-the line has been drawn in AL.

It will hinge on if you support casino gambling or not support it. last election, every commercial for a candidate had a bible in it. This year, they all have a slot machine in it.

  164. looks like i need a new cup of joe to enjoy my substance. i'll be back! ;)

  165. Didn't they make a movie about Brewbaker Tech where they got a new principal and he disguised himself as a student in an effort to reform the rampant corruption?

    ReplyDelete
  166. Great article, Jay. I like the fact that Gus realizes he has improvements to make and is working on doing that.

    Thanks, for the link THT.

  169. Hey scottie b,
We are going to the gymnastics meet Friday night, the baseball game Saturday afternoon and the basketball game Saturday night. I really want to stay and go to the women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon, but that may be pushing it.

I'm also going to pay a visit to the archives to see about some old b&w pictures of Auburn to use in the condo.

    Awesome weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  170. cincy, i'm jealous.

also, let me know if you have a certain AU b/w player photo you're looking for. i've got quite the collection of large AU photos i can email you. :)

  173. thanks, ehyou. That's exciting.

    thanks, Norm. That's depressing.

  174. Sounds like I made a good choice to not tune in to the 2nd half of the b-ball game last night. I knew it was over once AU got that double-digit 1st half lead.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Of course, I was starting to feel a little bit that way about 14 point leads in football at the end of last season.

  176. Luv,

"Balling it up" means I was playing basketball with my peeps after church last night.

    ReplyDelete
  177. 'Balling it up' also implies that I was doing quite well in that activity, especially from beyond the 3 point line.

    ReplyDelete
  178. scottie,
I think I am using mainly architectural details and some of the building photographs. I was thinking of doing a collage of different close ups of columns, letters, etc on some of the buildings around campus. And them some of the old scenes like The Bottle, Sani Flush, the old tennis courts that used to be where Haley now stands (that is where my in-laws met). Haven't quite decided, but thinking...Thanks for the offer! I may pick your brain for some ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Ballin' can also be used in reference to just about any activity in which you excel or dominate your competition.

It can also mean that you're cleaning up in the professional world or doin' well in general.
