And they make fun of Auburn's academics?

Hey everyone. I saw this last night on the Ohio State-Tennessee replay:

Evan Turner is the star player for Ohio State. He's sure to be a NBA lottery pick this summer, so clearly he's not concentrating on academics. Yet I get such a kick out of this major. Here's the official description:
"Students of this major learn to plan and manage money and other financial resources. Classes cover such topics as setting financial goals, creating and managing budgets, and avoiding and solving financial problems."
Keep in mind ... he's not even IN the major yet. He's laying the academic foundation to eventually delve deeper into the complex world of fundamental budgets, learning how to make change, how to use a bus card, how to buy groceries.

I'm sure he'll get there someday. Forget for a moment that he's a second-semester junior.

OK. It's good to have a diversion sometimes. I'll have a practice report up around noon.

  4. Apologies to Jeremy and Wes ... I've been jabbering about this on Facebook for hours already.

UGA has a similar course of study in the Home-Ec department. My neighbor's son got a similar degree and then became a stock broker ...yikes!

Not to be deterred by the subject/humor of this thread, I'll re-post from the end of the last thread.

Finebaum has his weekly column out that claims Beat Writers have fallen in prestige/substance and are now just media lap dogs for the schools. PF contradicts himself later in the column by using the Meyer incident as an example to make his point, then mentions that Meyer later apologized to the reporter ....which negates the argument PF is a shock jock that lives off creating controversy and I place no value on his opinion, but this does raise a few thoughts.

According to most accounts, the schools limit media access more now than in the past. This is probably due to the 24 hour media cycle, internet and the fact that the media as a whole is much more apt to emphasize/exaggerate the negative just to create a story than in the past. Beat writers in the past focused on players, formations, opponents, fundamentals, etc. Nowadays, a fight at practice or a DUI will get headline reporting. Sometimes social engineering-inspired comments are mixed in an article and disguised as "reporting".

I still see that there are well-respected beat writers like JGT out there. Maybe not as many as in the past, but still enough to fill the demand. The problem for the beat writers is that the public demand is changing. A growing number of sports fans nowadays are more concerned with the gossip of sports, than the substance of sports.

JG, thanks for what you do. Your newspaper reporting is always devoid of gossip-unnecessary opinion. Your tactful restraint, humor and control on this blog has set a great example and made this an enjoyable place for opinion to be expressed.

  11. maybe I should go back to college. I obviously could benefit from some of those courses.

Scottie B - you really RAWK! You are my favorite! (don't tell the others)

  12. In college I could have balanced my budget very easily. I didn't have anything to budget.

  15. CH=B - When 2.0 was about 8 years old, LGG Byron bestowed that appellation upon her because she was (and is) so very much like her mother. (Molly dog was eventually given the designation "oh point 2" as she shared similar traits with her "mother" as well)

I need the creative help of the Hotties.

I'm starting a new series of podcast (non-sports related) and I need a catch name not currently in use.

The focus is primarily movie series reviews with some delving into television series of yesteryear.

    Any ideas?

    Email me - jaybskipworth@yahoo.com

    Thanks.

  20. Not sure if LGGB and I will be driving 1000 miles to watch a scrimmage, but if we do, we'll be sure to bring the HABOTN.COM/HOTTIE HO! placards... unless we forget them.

Sounds like a lawsuit coming from The MA and Jay G.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Speaking of A-day. Are there any HABOTN plans? I'll be there with the family.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You think the MA has enough money to sue? Lawsuits are expensive, and they're firing half their workforce.

    ReplyDelete
  27. FRM - a nice acronym for "paying the bills". Of course, if that were my major, I'd have no money with which to pay said bills, but at least I'd be able to create a budget as evidence of that fact.

Of course, that's coming from someone with precisely zero ballin' skilz.

    So... back to work.

  28. it's a little slow in here and it's gorgeous outside. So LGGB and I are going out to have our own spring practice and toss the pigskin.

  29. When I refreshed I got a big 'do not enter' sign and a message saying this probably isn't the site I'm looking for.

    ReplyDelete
  30. ehyou, I got that message this morning also. but since it was trying to take me to google I clicked on it to continue and it brought me right to the posts.

  31. ehyou, "This is not the site you are looking for....Move along."

(scottie waves hand mysteriously at his monitor)

  36. Jay,

You hearing anything about Tennessee for this upcoming season? A few folks I know up that way are saying that it is going to be their worst team in years.

    ReplyDelete
  37. FSJ, I heard the same thing. Someone told me he heard Dooley is a major jerk too.

Calling a guy a jerk from third hand knowledge. Yep, sounds like SEC football to me! He's a jerk!

  38. Hey Digger, Cincy, JGT, et al.

So far I have enjoyed 2 days in Copenhagen and am now in Tromso, Norway. I absolutely love the Danes; they are so friendly and easy going. Norway is gorgeous. Cold, but gorgeous. Tomorrow I'll be heading back to Oslo before traveling to Stockholm on the 2nd. On the 6th I fly to Skopje, Macedonia to visit friends for a few days before going to London for a week long business strategy seminar. Afterwards i have 4 free day in which I hope to travel to Cornwall to see the Eden Project.

There. Done. Now, hopefully THT will stop junking up HABOTN.

  39. When I grow up...I want to live like THT 2.0.

  40. In shocking news....(not)

Sandra Bullock's husband is heading to rehab.

Wonder if it is Tigeresque rehab or what?

  41. THT,

When I was younger my parents wouldn't let me go to Attalla without permission.

For some reason, they didn't trust me.. ehehehe.

  42. It's already getting a little hot to suit me. I need to move to Norway.

  43. FSJ wants to be an Auburn fan when he grows up.

    ReplyDelete
  44. agreed, ehyou. Over 70 F is just too hot.

  45. Great hearing from 2.0. I like to live vicariously through others!

FSJ, my husband has 2 iPads reserved for pickup appointment on Saturday at 9:30 a.m (one for him, and one for daughter). He bought me the Macbook and iPhone, so I can't complain.

  46. Move to Alaska. It almost never gets above 70 here. Maybe just a few days in July.

Of course, it's below freezing for six months of the year, but it's not hot.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Alaska is (in my mind) one of the finest places on earth. I'm currently reading one of the best books I've ever picked up:

    The Alaskan Bootlegger's Bible

    ReplyDelete
  48. Only downside of Alaska is it's so darn far away from anything. Of course if you live here, then it's pretty close. But you know what I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Alaska does NOT have:

    Snakes
    Alligators
    Kudzu
    Fire Ants
    Armadillos
    Thousands of Bama Fans

What a great place to live!

  50. 2.0 postulates that Family Resource Mgt is post-graduate work, sort of like law school, thus explaining the persistent "Pre-" designation for his major.

    Yes, she was kidding.
