More on Big Cat Weekend

Hey everyone. Here is the story I wrote for today's editions of the Montgomery Advertiser that deals with BCW.

It provides some additional nuggets of information that you don't know right now ... but you will know once you read it. Clicking is free. Clicking always is free, so I recommend it in this case.

I'll have more nuggets from Trooper Taylor at some point today.

I'm currently working on a story that will provide a proper send-off for The Beav, which plays host to its final men's game tomorrow night. I'm sure you're excited.

Have a nice morning.

I guess I'm showing my age - I thought the idea of BCW last year was pretty corny and didn't expect it to gain much traction. I admit now that I was wrong in that assumption.

Another excellent article. Thanks Jay.

I do like the idea of this becoming and Auburn tradition. It is just one other thing that makes Auburn unique.

I do get BCW because of the relationships the recruits can develop and Auburn becoming something they have in common.

The Tiger Prowl is something that, to me, isn't quite as good of an idea. They put all the coaches in one limo, which limits the amount of area they can cover. The publicity drawn from it, both on the local and state wide scale, is likely what makes it work. In the first year I considered it a great way for the coaches to spend time together. That shouldn't be needed as much with ChizCo 2.0.

weagle251, what is unique is that it is getting a group of players in to simply hang out together. They are not doing a camp. Auburn has the camps and have had for a long time. It is purely about the relationships, which is what makes it unique.

No uniform changes, unless it is bringing back Russell Athletics. I watched a clip of us playing Georgia in about 1980. We were in those orange jerseys. We didn't look like Auburn.

Good riddance to Russell Athletics. That stuff is terrible and players hated it. Glad they are no longer partnering with Auburn. Under Armour is on a total different level. As for Uni changes. It will happen one day and it should.

as a proud seller of both Russell & Under Armour apparel & jerseys i can honestly say that Russell has come a long way in the past 10 years. Some changes to the uniform are probably inevitable, but I don't see a radical change coming. Things like bringing back the orange face masks could happen.

Hopefully that funky jersey number stuff that we switched to in the Bowden era will never be seen again.

As for the orange uniforms, I can't stand them. Barfield used them as a cheap gimmick, similar to the way Georgia used the black uniforms. I don't care for gimmicks. Just give me Auburn football.

I'm in favor for the all Navy Uni- Pants, Jersey and Helmet. I'm also for adding Navy pants once in awhile to our Road Uni's. Things like this will happen. It's just a matter of time. Our Uni's are good as is, but a little change never hurts once in awhile. To hear people gasp at one game a year change is ridiculous considering we play at least 12 games a season. Like my Bro said, we need something different in Baton Rouge, the home uni there is not working.

I'm sure everyone noticed what Nike did with all those teams in making uniform modifications last season, some great and some hideous. Under Armour will be doing the same, just watch. Will Auburn be a team that buys in or passes?

11:40 AM

I still can't get over the Florida uniforms with the big F on the side of the helmet. That was ridiculous.

Let them change Bama's uniforms. Put that Zorro the gay blade A on the side of their helmets or something. That would work for me. They have one of the most boring uniforms in college football.

BCW is a great idea and far from a gimmick. It's just about bringing in future Auburn players to hang out and get comfortable with one another. I think it is very unique. Other schools such as Florida (with their Friday Night Lights) do something similar, but in that case they are do football related activities. BCW is just all about having fun and hanging out.

Sorry G but I don't really care for Schlabach. He may be a great person if you get to know him, but on tv he comes across as a conceded jerk.

I'll argue just for fun.

We didn't lose in Baton Rouge because of uniforms. That's the psycho babble bullcrap we need to stay away from. (We lost because we didn't play winning football -- 2005 excepted.)

When you start acting like that, you're desperate. Look what has happened with Georgia.

Maybe Georgia thinks the black jerseys had something to do with the win against us in 2007. It didn't. We led in that game in the second half. Since Richt changed who he was, they've started to sink.

Listen, I'm hard core. I didn't like it when the Army gave out black berets to everyone. I knew that many tough, mean SOBs had been through hell to earn those berets, and now they hand them out to everyone. I've never served a day in the military, but I know it devalued the meaning.

We've got a beautiful, classic look. It's who we are. I'm cool with breaking out the whites at home once a year -- just to screw with LSU is fine with me.

But putting on blue pants or orange jerseys is goofy.

I agree with Jet. Let the bball team do the experimenting if someone at AU must. Ugly uniforms to match the play

11:59 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Jet- Wrong tangent about whether it helps winning. I don't really think that matters, I just want something different for one game a year. That's all. When we play at LSU, that seems to be a great game to tinker with. As far as whether we win or not, I'm sure many know it doesn't, but I'm will to bet that you have a lucky hat, socks, shirt something that you wear on gameday thinking that matters and could be the difference in a W or an L.

Anyways, time for change...time for hope :) (Just for Jet).

...and speaking of LSU, that's who AU is against in the uniform bracket.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I do agree that once Mark Richt started making changes, it seems that Georgia's fortunes jumped for one year then dropped greatly after that.

I also agree that black jerseys didn't beat us that year, it was just flat poor play from midway through the 3rd quarter when we lead 20-17 until the brutal end.

Eddie,

Sadly I did. The 2001 loss to UAT cured all that mumbo jumbo.

I once again picked up David Housel's wonderful ode to Auburn football, "Saturdays to Remember," a book I've read a hundred times. I turned to the chapter regarding the 1969 UAT game. Don't believe in hexes and jinx and such nonsense. Believe in blocking and tackling.

I wear the same shirt to games because it's the shirt I bought -- not because it has any specific value to the team or the outcome.

12:05 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Jet...I thought we played winning football in Baton Rouge in 2007.

Many may be ambivalent towards Brandon Cox, but as far as Auburn QB's go, I think he's just about as good as it gets when it's the fourth quarter and the game's on the line. He could be playing like crap (or really good) much of the previous two quarters, but when we needed a drive, he usually delivered.

2007 at LSU was one of those moments. Unfortunately, he was undone by the the dumb luck of Les Miles.

12:06 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

As long as we win the game, I don't care what color is on the jersey.

I just don't want it to become a gimmick then a crutch then a regret like it becomes with some teams.

Jet,

That same game in 2001 did me in on my "traditions" that I had of parking in the same spot, walking in the same way, wearing the same shirt on game day.

12:08 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Jet- We are all guilty of that in some degree, and eventually I believe most of us grow out of it. Trust me, I've done the same.

12:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

E-Bro, as far as being a clutch QB at the end of the game, Cox was outstanding. It is fair to criticize him for a hand ful of very bad games he had. Most of the time he was a very good QB, but when he had a bad game it tended to be really bad. Some of that is simply because his final season he was getting the crap beat out of him. He proved to be one of our tougher QBs, which I always found ironic somehow.

12:09 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

That 2001 uat game was the worst Auburn game I've ever attended. I hope like hell to never have to go thru that again.

MSU is another good example of a uniform change. I think they went down hill with the big M on the side of the helmets instead of the interlocking MSU.

12:10 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I didn't appreciate what Cox brought to the table until he was gone and we were stuck with an injured Todd and Kodi for a year.

Then I upgraded my opinion on Brandon Cox from below average to average SEC QB.

12:11 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

That bracket is stupid. USC over Army? Not a chance (unless we're talking about that camo dreck they pull out sometimes). Same with Arizona State over Wake. Decent does not beat classy, ever.

Oregon over Florida. Also, stupid, and I hate Florida (have I mentioned that), but at least they have a standard uni.

Mizzou over PSU? Please. They have an animal on their helmet.

Oklahoma/ ND is probably the toughest one for me to call.

I hate Tech's unis, but Miami? C'mon. The U on the helmet looks good. The rest of their unis are awful.

I won't argue aTm, but I don't love their unis, either.

At least they didn't put Clemson or Syracuse on there.

12:12 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Steve...agreed about Brandon. He definitely had some poor games and I don't think he's the greatest Auburn QB ever, but he was a gamer at the end of the game.

Also was 3-0 against the Tide and 2-0 against the Gators. That ain't bad.

12:12 PM

But Eddie, Missouri only wears that uniform on days when they suspect are going to be photographed for uniform brackets. They have lots of other ones.

12:14 PM

after further review, Mizzou doesn't have an animal on their helmet. It is, however, pasted all over the freaking place on the the jerseys and pants.

12:17 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating some radical change to our uniforms.

I too love the home unis as they are, and would want to keep them like that for all home SEC games, but I wouldn't mind if when we're playing Furman or somebody of a similar ilk that we wore Orange jerseys.

It might make an otherwise glorified scrimmage a bit more interesting.

The way I'm coming at this from is that Orange is a prominent color at Auburn (maybe the most prominent), and yet it doesn't really make a much of an appearance on our football uniforms. Baseball wears orange, basketball wears orange. I don't know, maybe all other Auburn athletics wear orange.

Why not football once a year or so?
