More with Trooper Taylor
Hey everyone. My chat with Trooper Taylor spanned 15 minutes on Monday, but I only shared a portion of that event with you yesterday. The news was Big Cat Weekend and his comments regarding that enterprise were timely.
Today? Let's see what Taylor had to say about a few more general topics:

Today? Let's see what Taylor had to say about a few more general topics:
- Explain how you affect which wideouts Auburn recruits: ``Every one of them comes through me. I evaluate and approve every single receiver we recruit. There are no ifs ands or buts. Just like if it's my area and I'm looking at a d-lineman, he isn't going to get an offer unless Tracy Rocker says so.
The ultimate guy is Chiz. If there's a question after that, we go to the coordinators. Sometimes it's about if they'll play offense or defense. Coach Chiz solves all those problems. He takes suggestions from the coordinators.
If the kid doesn't fit with me, I don't care if he's a five-star guy. It doesn't matter. I'm not going to coach a kid who doesn't understand and doesn't respect our values and the way we do things." - What do you look for in a wideout? ``I like play-makers. If he makes plays in high school, I like him. I'll be conscientious of who he's playing against. If he's playing against guys who run 5-flat and he's running a 4.8, he'll look fast because he's playing at a certain level.
I won't take a guy because he's too small. I won't take a guy because he's too big. I take guys who make plays. We want guys who are versatile. We like guys who can run reverses, who can throw the football, who can catch the tunnel.
We're not the typical group that says: He has to catch the fade or he has to catch the slant. We talk about finding the most versatile receivers in the county. We don't want to lock our guys in. A lot of places will put a kid in one spot and then the defense is able to take him away. All he knows is that one spot.
They don't move them around. It's like war -- if you know where the enemy is, you can blow him up. Our guys learn concepts. Where you are in the formation tells you which route to run. We change it up." - Becoming versatile ... is that more of a physical or mental thing? ``It's both. I'm always looking for fear -- guys that slide or avoid the hit. If he won't bite when he's a puppy, he probably won't bite as a big dog. Those are the things I look for. I need tough guys. I need play-makers. He won't quit. I like big blocks. I like guys who give it all in whatever they're doing. Those kinds of guys make the transition to our system much faster than a guy who just runs great routes and is quick.
- You all are always signing high-school quarterbacks to be wideouts. Why? ``That's usually because he's the best athlete. They cut out the middle man and direct-snap to the best athlete. That's what Trovon (Reed) did in high school. He was versatile. That experience pays off when you get here -- you have a lot of skills.
- But that makes the learning curve pretty steep, right? ``It does, but when you play quarterback you understand protections and the routes and the coverages. They had to manage the whole deal rather than being locked in as a receiver and you only worry about the guy over top of you.
The kids who were quarterbacks coming in, it's a terminology thing. They usually understand the concepts right off." - How is this offense changing from 2009 to 2010? ``We've already made quite a few adjustments. I can't get into those with the newspaper (laughter) but this season is going to be a lot different. We were teaching last year. Now we know the whole thing and now we can break it down by parts. We can really work on some smaller stuff, itty-bitty adjustments that they wouldn't have even understood time time last year.
We're also spending more time explaining to them why we call what we call. If they adjusted this way, this is our answer. They need to think with us. There's power in knowledge. That's going to be a big difference." - What are you expecting from Kodi Burns in 2010? ``I don't think his role will change. I think he'll do the exact same thing. He brings so much to the table with his smarts. He can throw the football. He can give you those tough yards in the Wildcat. He blocks, too. I don't think his "slash" deal will change.
He went from quarterback, taking maybe five or 10 yards at a time, he started running 10 times that. He lost some of his explosiveness later in the year because he wasn't used to it.
This signing class -- they're talented, but they're here to help us build some depth right now. There was a major drop-off from first team to second team last year. The other teams we played, there wasn't a major drop-off. That's where you close the gap -- when your second guy is right there with the first guy."

It's like WAR!
This reminds me of all the great in-depth conversations you had with Greg Knox over the years about the WR's.
I find that odd, RK, because Trooper T. sounds nothing like Greg Knox.

Great interview!

Trooper Taylor is not Greg Knox.
Oh, geez, my sarcasm took over again. Oops.
Eddie = Kodi Burns?
HAHAHAHA. Right.
I'm just glad it seems like now we can talk WR play, coaching, potential and hopefully results with positive words.
PF,
I trust that Eddie can fall forward for 2-3 yards and throw across his body in enough time for the D to recover using different technique each time.
Exactly RK. Nice try PF.

PF- I love you man. You're the best.
Ok. Thanks...I guess.
Too bad you unfriended me on facebook. I was really bummed by that move PF. Monica and PF, only two people on Habotn to unfriend me.
We were friends on Facebook?

Very Nice, Very Nice JGT. I especially like this line:
....I'm always looking for fear -- guys that slide or avoid the hit. If he won't bite when he's a puppy, he probably won't bite as a big dog.
The coaches were probably learning just as much as the players last year. Now with one year into the system, I do expect them to break down and teach the little nuances of the system better. Little things can pay big dividends.
Sing with me ...
"I like big blocks ... and I cannot lie ... You otha brothas can't deny.
Very good article, Jay. I like the idea of getting versatile players. One thing that strikes me different with the description of this offense and our previous experiment with the spread is that the previous spread was supposedly simple for everyone, other than the QB. It seems like Malzahn takes a different approach.
Power in knowledge
--and knowledge is power.
"Knowledge is good." -- Emil Faber.
Proof of PFs ignorance.
Great interview Homer lots of good stuff there.
By the way the snow didn't last long but that's OK with me.
The #*^$%# first sentence is exactly what I was saying, you idiot.
love the excitement of TT
Thanks again Jay for the awesome coverage!
Tag-team match at the flagpole at 3 pm. SteveFC and Eddie vs. PF and Colonel Reb.
Count Chocula ...
I just don't see the team thang workin' on that one.
There is no competition. PF proved his ignorance with this little gem of Rhodes Scholar literature.
The #*^$%# first sentence is exactly what I was saying, you idiot.
I rest my case. Kids never learn.

From this the first thing I took from it was the whole piece about how Kodi Burns can throw the football. That and Trooper doesn't know what the he's saying sometimes.
This is why you don 't let asst. coaches talk.
They say stuff that contradicts the HCs message or themselves.
And then there's confusion...and hysteria.
Greg Knox suck by the way.

"You're all a bunch of idiots." -- Michael.
Sensi, I disagree. He said Kodi could throw the ball. He didn't say he could do it well.
Michael's words have never been truer Jet.
"He brings so much to the table with his smarts. He can throw the football. "
I guess in Steve's world it's illogical to assume he was praising Kodi Burns' throwing ability.
I know, Steve - shut my effing bammer mouth.
Whatever.
Sensi ...
Trooper was a posed a question in regards to Kodi. What was he to say?
He answered -- dare I say it? -- in a sensible way. He said nice things about him, and promised nothing.
In keeping with the general theme recently here, and since I just heard this fine song by Triumph, "It's the same old story, all over again..."
All four in a steel cage match? Winner gets to be new mascot of Ole Miss. We could even throw in Admiral Ackbar for giggles.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Norm- How much snow out your way? Wifey says we have a solid 2 inches at my house in Villa Rica.
Norm, are you listening to the Boneyard?
Scott C= Don King?
Jet - that's my point! That may be what he assess/thinks about Kodi but it doesn't jive with other messages.
That's all.
People, stop looking for reasons to bash contrary opinions.
Admiral Ackbar could be the special guest referee.
Sensi,
Always the ray of sunshine.
"It's a TRAP."
Eddie,
How are the roads? I'm assuming the snow is not covering them if you aren't heading home yet.
I want to see an Admiral Ackbar/Joe Kines conversation.
Nooga schools got sent home early and our office closed at 1, however looking outside now there is nothing on the road or the grass anymore.
So far both Troop and Malzahn seem to be saying Kodi will be used like he was last year, although Malzahn hasn't praised his passing ability. I think Jay is more correct in that there really isn't a good spot for Burns.
Eddie - I'd estimate around 2" outside the office on Windward off 400 in Alpharetta. An hour or so ago Hot Wife said it looked like we had about the same amount at home in Johns Creek.
WERK - Boneyard is definitely one of my XM presets, but I'm currently listening to the iPod. I love me some Triumph. An extremely talented and underrated band. Now I'm hearing another Canadian group April Wine. Not necessarily as talented but I enjoy them.

"It's a TRAP" - Akbar
"We gotta stop the Empire's little inside Trap, Admiral." - Kines
"Divert all power to the front deflector shields." - Akbar
How's that?
Man, I need a life. LOL!
Peter- Wifey said roads were fine until the last 5 miles where it was actually on the roads in spots. She left work early to pick up kids since daycare closed early. I'll make the hour commute an hour earlier in an effort to avoid most of the idiot drivers.
Is it possible they are thinking they should still give Burns playing time for the sake of team unity? Apparently Burns had his supporters.
Team unity? We are still on that?
I hope not.
I see what you are saying, but who's running this asylum? The Inmates (players) or the Administration (coaches)?
Norm,
Triumph was playing on the Boneyard when you posted that, so I thought you might be listening.
This comment has been removed by the author.
I have up on Sirius XM long ago. I use an MP3 player while on the road and when online I use Pandora or my MP3 collection. Pandora is neat in that you can customize a radio station with music based upon who you like.
On the road to where?
Sometimes April Wine was more like April Wine & Cheese, but I will confess to having a couple of their albums on vinyl.
Sensi, I do agree, but I cannot explain why they would see Kodi in his same role this coming season. It may be that they are just waiting for other players to beat him out.
I don't mean to sound like I dislike Kodi. It is just that we seem to have better options at WR and as a wildcat QB, if we even need that when our starter is likely to be 6'6" and 245 pounds as fast or possibly faster than Kodi.
Something here doesn't make sense, unless it is team unity or they are wanting the players to see for themselves in practice.
Looks like deleting comments is the NEW GIG ... as Eddie Fogler would say.
Sensi ...
Personally, I hope Chiz lets his assistants talk -- it seems way too controlling otherwise.
If it's bashing a contrary opinion because I'm having trouble seeing what else Trooper was supposed to say when he's asked about Kodi Burns, then consider yourself bashed.
Read my friend Chad Gibbs take on star wars and the sec here. He also has a football book coming out soon
http://chadgibbs.wordpress.com/2010/02/26/the-sec-as-star-wars-characters/
Harrison, I think Troop could have downplayed it a bit by saying Kodi would likely compete for the same duties he had last season.
I suppose it is possible that I underestimate Kodi, but other the only time he was really a success is when he came in occasionally for Cox, and even then they didn't let him throw the ball.
The kid is talented, but there is a lot of talent in the backfield and at WR on this team.
Triumph reminded me of something. Who recognizes this line-up?
Quiet Riot
Motley Crue
Ozzy Osbourne
Judas Priest
Triumph
The Scorpions
Van Halen
I didn't say nutin bout Kodi, Steve. But thanks for including me
ChocoScott: 1983 US Festival, Metal Sunday?
WERK ...I've learned to recognize and appreciate your sarcasm and caught your earlier comment. There's an art to written sarcasm that escapes me, therefore I don't try anymore.
I tried to buy one of those sarcasm symbols and couldn't even do that correctly.
Snowed all day here in Norcross, GA and not one darn bit stuck.
I noticed the saRKasm coming from a mile away.
Jet,
That Maple Leaf is annoying me, even if it is in a crossed out circle.
I was about 100 miles from that event in 1983. I wish I had been there, but I was 11 at the time.
My parents weren't into Oingo Boingo, Missing Persons and Scorpions like me.
Nice Trooper jewels:
"If he won't bite when he's a puppy, he probably won't bite as a big dog."
"There was a major drop-off from first team to second team last year. The other teams we played, there wasn't a major drop-off. That's where you close the gap -- when your second guy is right there with the first guy."
What does "catch the tunnel" mean? I've not heard that term.
PF ... Maybe this will help.
Hoop: I have no idea, but that's definitely what he said. I'll ask next time.
Jet.
Awwwwwww.
You are correct, JGT. I remember hanging out with a bunch of other scrawny 10th graders at a friend's house and watching every bit of that. We were JP and VH fanatics.
I am curious about the tunnel too. I am not sure what he was referring to.
Fannin is also a player I am going to be interested in seeing how he is used. He is one of those guys that, similar to Kodi, have made some great plays but is inconsistent. It will be interesting to see if he can carry the load at runningback, although I tend to believe it will be a shared position until someone steps up.

Sorry for the deletes. I seem to be in the double post twilight zone today.
I've been reluctant to use the term "Chiz" in lieu of "CGC". I'm old fashioned.
See-anze how Troop and Jet are now using it, Imma gonna start.
This may be the tunnel he was referring to.
PF,
In answer to your question from the last post, the Cincinnati Bengals helmets are way cool. I don't want them for Auburn, but I love them for Cincy.
Someday the Bengals are going to be good :)
Sorry. I was talking about the University of, Cincy
It is hard to find tunnel in that link. It describes making a tunnel with your hands to catch the ball instead of letting the ball hit your body.
Oh, my bad. I don't really care about UC, but I like their helmets.
Steve, I see no comparison between Kodi & Fannin other than 2 years ago people were saying if we got both in the same backfield at the same time we'd be unstoppable.
Fannin has shown flashes of brilliance.
cincy, I am the one against Bengals helmets. Yes, they have a unique style to them, but I wouldn't like them for Auburn. They are better than what they had before, which I believe looked almost exactly like the Browns helmets.
Just for Jay G.:
US Fest
Thought I would pass along that Ben ran a 4.45 in his first timed 40 at the NFL Combine...assuming this is live... It's actually one of the top 5 times from running backs in the first round.
Cincy,
Yeah, I'm torn. It's a cool logo, and makes for a clean helmet, but at the same time, there's something about it that bothers me.
Kodi has made some amazing plays, Some tend to forget them, but he has made some of the better runs that I have seen from a QB. Remember his performance in the Peach Bowl.
Both Fannin and Kodi have been inconsistent throughout their careers, but Kodi obviously has had more issues.
Fannin at times has looked great. At other times he makes bad mistakes including fumbling and running the wrong way. I am hoping he has grown a bit.
They both definitely have a lot of athletic ability.
PF,
I like it because it is very distinctive. I like the way the C makes the pad part of the claw, but then I like symbolism and stuff. So what the heck is a bearcat?
E-Bingo bill finally makes it to the Senate floor ... here comes the filibuster ... yeehaw.
Doubleheader baseball tomorrow, plus:
special Promotion from Auburn: Everyone that redeems their ticket stub from the AU Baseball game Wed gets in FREE at the Auburn Men's Basketball game at 7pm tomorrow night.
That's three games for the price on one baseball ticket.
Michael, it is possible. This is a case where you just have to trust that the coaches know best, even if Michael is kidding.
I believe Kodi in the Peach Bowl was 1 of 4 passing with a TD on an underthrown ball.
He did give the team a spark of energy in that game.
Someone posted on here that it was some scary asian mammal.
Oh, I wasn't kidding when I said I didn't think his role would change. His role didn't make sense this year, just because it makes even less sense next year doesn't mean the coaches will change course and put a running threat at the wildcat.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Cincy, the Bengals did go to two Super Bowls in the 80's. I was for them in both and they let me down in both. Stupid 49ers.
Catch the tunnel update...
From the Boomerang Association of Australia: ``A tunnel catch is a catch between the legs with both feet on the ground — one hand must pass between the legs.
E-Bingo bills weren't going to get the required 21 votes to come up for a debate; Senate adjourns until tomorrow a.m.
Not to be confused with Catch the Funnel, which Norm did with regularity many years ago.
@ChocoScott: Dale B. looks sick in that clip. I don't mean the good kind of sick.
michael!
wow. Substance overload from Writer Tate today. FANTASTIC!!!
p-p-p-pup-pup-PUPPET HOUR
I have a crappy story for puppet hour. Just got back from skiing in Lake Tahoe, which was awesome, unitl my wife was tripped by a puppet tearing her ACL
AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Puppets love to tear ACLs. I once saw one puppet grab one side of an ACL and another puppet grab the other side, and just pulled til it popped.
These puppets hid in the over 2 feet of snow we had while out there. I think they wanted me but got her instead
That's why Spider-Man didn't want to date Mary Jane. You know, to protect her from his war against supervillains like puppets.
People like me and Harrison aren't that considerate though. I like certain things that come with a relationship too much to forfeit that just because it is in my significant other's "best interests" not to be involved with someone who is waged in such a deadly war.
That catch the tunnel phrase is catchy. It may become famous like others such as live to punt.
When I was doing a pirating stint, the last thing you wanted to do on one of the Indonesian islands we docked at was to "catch the tunnel". The itching was supposedly unbearable.
Michael, I hate to break it to you, but women are puppets doing a covert operation to steal have your stuff.
Were you friends with the pirates that got offed by the Navy Seals off the coast of Somalia?
If so. My condolences.
those were Michael's pirate in-laws. he knew what was going to happen
Jay G., how about 26 years later:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKW0EoIaqo0&feature=related
No, those Somalians are amateurs. From various reports, they don't even have treasure chests or hook hands. When a puppet bites off one of their hands, they just leave it as a nub.
E-Bro, your avatar seems to have enjoyed the ACL story for some reason. Any chance he was involved?
As a former pirate, how do you feel about the use of automatic weapons in today's form of piracy?
Taking the easy way out?
For any newbies unfamiliar with the puppet discussions, you might not want to ask.
Count Chocula...I'm not at liberty to say at present time.
E-bro, I have been out of the game for awhile, so this is kind of like when players from the '40'a whine about the forward pass, or like when Buzz Aldrin comments on the current space program, but here is my take: all pirates who use automatic weapons should have their timbers shivered. Semi-automatic only, please.
The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to stop a D.C. gay marriage. If they won't do that, what are they there for? What's next? Will they not ensure that Hardee's serves only Angus burgers? Why were these judges appointed if they aren't going to get involved?
I'm working on a guy trip with some of my buddies. Now I'm thinking a pirating adventure might be the way to go. I could really enjoy keel-hauling some Bammers.
What are you thinking about doing Scottchoc
Michael is joking.
As always, thank you Kristeenhu. Although I really was a pirate. But it is true, I didn't really try very hard to avoid catching the tunnel, and I got it the first day I was there. What can I say, pirates live loosely.
We're definitely working with some budget and time constraints this time. It will probably be hiking/camping, whitewater rafting, or standard lake activities. I think we could add pirating to at least a couple of those.
If you go rafting you could pirate other people's rafts. Steal their sandwiches and what not
Yeah, but don't rape anything. That part of pirating has been frowned upon lately. And with good reason, ya know?
Is stabbing still cool?? that was always my favorite part
Not to tell a pirate what he can't and can do, but isn't whitewater rafting usually the territory of Deliverance-type characters and dueling banjos.
We don't want this thing to become a turf war.
@ChocoScott: Dale looks so blasé in that performance, like she's there because she has to. At least she's over 100 pounds now, so that's good.
BreakingNews: NYC police look for supermodel Naomi Campbell after she allegedly slaps, punches driver of her Cadillac Escalade, then runs off - AP

I agree, JGT. She looks better than I thought she would, though.
Zack's was a bit out of the way, so I had Hursey's barbecue for lunch yesterday. And supper last night. And supper tonight.
I love Hursey's barbecue.
Steve, that's probably a regular evening out for Naomi Campbell. I'm guessing that driver got off easy.

I feel that added alot of substance to this blog.

Jet - if it's any consolation, and I doubt that it is, the Hurricanes doing a woodshed number on the MAPLELEAFS. It's 4-0 in the second period.
Wake, light the fire under the Lightning. They're tied 1-1 with the Broad Street Bullies after one.
SIAP...
Rutgers to the Big Ten? Really?
surely you jest, FSJ? It's hard to get a lot worse than the SEC taking in SC, but that would be a lot worse.
I guess we can't disturb Jet while he's watching To Kill a Mockingbird on AMC.
Stop calling him Shirley.
Click click boom.
THT ... I prefer the book. Mrs. Jet obtained an autographed copy as a Valentine's Day gift.
Rutgers did start college football. The Big Ten loves "tradition," even though they have little that is relevant.
SC is the scourge of the SEC? They're in the south, have a good fanbase and atmosphere, and put a semi-competitive product on the field. I don't get that, THT.
Jet - I can only think of a couple of instances where I thought a movie did any justice to the book. The Godfather would be one of those instances. I agree with you on To Kill a Mockingbird, the book was much better.
SC has an all-time losing record in football. Sandlapper trash.
Mississippi State is the only other SEC school that can make that claim.
y'all read books? One day I'm going to have to learn how to read... or not.
But they have a huge cock.

Vote for Auburn in the championship round of the best uniform contest.
Of Mice and Men is one movie that does the book justice.
I hate to even bring this up, but I am getting a new AU license plate on Thursday. Any suggestions? You will have to think outside the box because everything in the box is taken!
I have 6 letters in which to work magic.
Is CINCYT not available?
fellas
Rutgers to the Big Ten would be interesting. They have had a few season recently where they were very competitive, much more so than teams such as SC and MSU in the SEC.
SensiT... um, probably not.

Anybody know the status of Frankie Sullivan for tomorrow's game?
Good morning, Hotties. Another day, another 50 cents...
CNCTGR...is that taken?
mornin' peeps. another day of serving america's youth with premium youth baseball & softball jerseys for scottie b! ;) hoooorah!
LUV,
Great minds think alike! CNCTGR is the one I am leaning toward and it is available. Although Jet's suggestion of CINCYT is also available. Thanks for the ideas.
Jay,
Great article on the closing of the coliseum. Wish we could go to the game tonight.
yup, i wish i could've went to one final game at the BEMC for old times' sake. oh, well.
one of my favorite moments in the BEMC was the Porter dunk on LSU. i had gotten to the game late b/c AU baseball had a game that day (i worked with the team) so i had to sit way up high. i remember it plain as day. amazing.
another favorite as the 94-40 victory over Alabama and the OT win where Reggie (we call him 'The Legend') Sharp hit that 3-pointer from mid-court. i was sitting behind the basket on the south end for both of those games, almost identical seats.
so close to turning the page. Shame.
Because pages should be turned if at all possible
Why are the handicapped parking spaces at Walgreens always further away from the entrance than the non-handicapped spaces? How is that legal?
That's a serious question, and I can't find the answer online. Maybe I will ask it in the real thread too.
Because it seems to me that of all places, drug stores should really make sure their handicapped spots are closest. Lots of elderly show up there to get there meds.
There, it's over in the real thread now. We'll see what happens with it over there.
When I was little, my friends and I used to use the phrase "Bull honkey!" That phrase really hasn't survived all that well.
However, about 13 years ago in high school, everyone used to say "Let's get crunk." Then nobody said it. Now people are saying it again. Maybe "Bull honkey" will make a comeback too.
Q: What diamond cutting wrassler rejected an offer to join the NWO, thus endearing himself to wrasslin fans around the world?

Michael,
You are so lame that if we were facebook friends, I would de-friend you.
BALLS!
I am not near that lame. If we were facebook friends, you would create a friends list titled "Coolest People in the UNIVERSE" and I would be the only friend on it. Unless you also happen to be facebook friends with Alf. He would make that list too.
I'm somehow Facebook connected with Alf.
You're right, I would never treat you like I treat Monica. You're polar opposites. She lives in WV. You are from somewhere else.
