The one who got away

Hey everyone. Based wholly on a suggestion from Jet, I watched the final 5 minutes of the UTEP-Houston game. I couldn't help but notice that Kelvin Lewis, the former Auburn guard, scored 28 points in the Cougars' win.

They're headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992.

Auburn is not headed to the tournament.

Lebo lost a ton of talented guys during his six years on the Plains: Lewis, Marco Killingsworth, Lew Monroe, Toney Douglas and Josh Dollard among others. That's a great starting five right there.

The more I digest the coach situation, I believe it will come down to Sam Mitchell and the UTEP guy and the UT assistant.

I think AU can get aany of them for $1.2 million per year.

Norm- The link didn't work, but I've already been looking into that Marathon. Problem for me is that it is in football season, like October 2nd or 3rd I believe. Running down there is so easy because it is so flat. I would go to the parks a half a day come back and run almost 6 miles and then go back out to the parks with relative ease. They had a princess half marathon when I was there just over a week ago and they do a lot of fun things along the run from what I could notice. Of course I'm heading back this weekend for some more running and play time. Still wish I was running the ING.

Yeah, it's 10/2 which equates to AU v LaMo. I think I may make the trip and do that race and work in the first Disney trip for F4*. I'm registered for ING but will make my final determination later this week if I'll actually participate. My energy just hasn't returned as quickly as I'd like, I'm getting tired way earlier than I figured I would.

I've heard that We may go hard after Tubby Smith. I think he would be a good hire. He knows the south well and he has won pretty consistently everywhere he goes. The UK fans were just too hard on him in my opinion.

Norm- Let me know if you run it. I've been on the fence about it, but if you run, I'm sure I would follow suit. This is the first time they have held this particular race and it will be the first half marathon at night down there to my knowledge. Seems like a lot of fun.

11:41 AM

Eddie - if you're a betting man, put your $ on me running it. Hot Wife doesn't run much anymore so is interested in the 5K and F4* could do the Dash which he'll win easily (or else). My running partner has run at least once in every Disney event at World or Land so she'll go too and her husband'll do whatever it is he does during races.

For those watching "The Pacific" on HBO...

Just an FYI, but one of the main characters on there, Eugene Sledge, is an Auburn man. After the war, he attended school there and graduated, and perhaps stayed on a while longer as an assistant.

He kept a hauntingly good diary of his time fighting in the Pacific. Ken Burns also featured him heavily in his documentary series "The War". Sledge was from Mobile.

12:24 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Bro - I caught it last night but certainly didn't know that tidbit. Sadly, I think if that war were fought now, the outcome would be vastly different. That's certainly not meant as a knock against the caliber of the individuals wearing the uniforms or those in support roles. They're the best. It is however intended as a knock against the government, media, and general population as a whole.

2:55 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

With all due respect to Tubby, who I was always a big fan of, those stats are kind of underachieving for Kentucky, bar his first season using Pitino's players.

Never made another Final Four. Came close a few times, but never did it. And four second round exits doesn't cut it at Kentucky.

It represents monumental success at Auburn, but not Lexington.

2:57 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I'm not saying he is my 1st choice but I believe he would probably set some coaching records before all was said and done. I like the fact that he has SEC experience. He has major tournament experience. If he had been at any other school he would probably still be in the SEC.

2:58 PM

But that is like saying if Spurrier could do at USCe what he did at UF he would be a legend. The sad truth is he can't, and I don't think Tubby could do here what he did at UK.

That being said I think he could be successful by Auburn standards.

3:04 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

CHB...the way I'm looking at it is that if Tubby sort of underachieved at Kentucky, he might do so at Auburn.

Well, I guess you can really underachieve at Auburn given our expectations, but I don't think the results he got at Kentucky would necessarily be the same at Auburn.

Not that Minnesota is a basketball power house, but he his three years there haven't been a rip roaring success. It took a crazy Big Ten tourney run to get into the field this year. Plus, Tubby is getting on up there in years. How much passion does he have to take on a project at Auburn that needs a lot of energy?

Like I said, I like Tubby, and I wouldn't lay in the fetal position if he was hired, but he's wouldn't be close to the top of a list I was putting together.

I told someone at lunch today this: I hope in 4-5 years we're back in the market trying to hire a coach because someone bigger than us thought enough of him to hire him away.

I'm looking for an energetic coach that is completely driven. I'm looking for someone who's willing to attempt great things. I'm not interested in a coach in the back end of his career looking for a softer place to land. I'm willing to try an assistant with a plan.

I'm looking for a coach that's willing to go wherever 2 or 3 prospects are gathered to find players. I'm looking for a coach that will hit the rubber chicken circuit and say "I want some more."

I want a hoops version of Tiger Prowl and Big Cat Weekends or some such innovation. I want prospects saying, "I want to be a part of that."

If I were the AD, that's what I'd be looking for.

As for a bball coach. I would take Tubby if he would come. I think he would add instant credibility to the AU program. He is 58. Minnesota was a dump when he got there.
AU is not going to be a UK. Not right. I want a team that will get in the tourney each year and go at least 2 rounds. Once that is established, if Tubby decides to retire, he would leave the program in good shape. i am OK with that.

I, like Jet, would like to have an up and comer that other schools will want in a few years if we can get one of those. however, I think if we get Tubby, those up and comers will have turned JJ down.
I heard today that several years ago Tommy Amaker was offered the job and Coach K suggested he not take it. We hired Lebo.

7:08 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Before Lebo, did AU not try to hire Anderson (did not come for an interview which has been discussed) and Grant (he was at VCU) and another minority coach and they all turn AU down.

Someone correct me, if you recall what happened.

7:10 PM
Blogger wtc said...

OK. An article on another newspaper site is saying NCAA compliance representatives say it is not a rule that a coach have a college degree. They say it would be nice but is not a rule.

7:22 PM
Blogger CHB said...

WTC, yes we wanted Anderson but he refused to come in for an interview. He thought if we wanted him we should just make an offer.

A degree may not be a requirement but I think it would send a bad message if a coach didn't have one.

I think it would be a great plus for the new bb coach to become friends with the football staff. They should team up and do a big cat weekend that featured recruits from both sports.

Charlie had several people from different businesses he wanted Tyler to meet. All I know is they were meeting at the Buckhead Club. I don't think any of those meetings were formal interviews.

In Cincy, he is meeting with GE, P&G and American Modern Insurance Group. He has worked for AMIG off and on through college designing some computer applications for them. In Huntsville he is interviewing with AIS who does alot of work with Dynetics. I think he is also interviewing directly with Dynetics.

He would really like to do project management work, interfacing between the business needs and the computer programers. Many times those two groups do not communicate well directly.

Anyway, way more than you wanted to know! Thanks for asking though :)

I'm stuck on the Purdue/Siena matchup... And I don't see a single 5 seed I'm comfortable picking over a 12.
This seems harder than last yr.

I'm seriously considering letting my daughters pick based on which names they like better.

Miller,
I have changed that match-up four times and I still don't know who I am going to pick. You're right - this was easier last year.

Now, I really am off to the grocery store. I would like to get something accomplished before hubby gets home...and I tell him what else I bought for the condo today. Those things are so much easier to tell when there are good smelling things cooking in the kitchen :)

ehyou,
Sometimes I pick based on mascots or uniform colors.

Yes cinncy my bracket is filled out. I have not touched it since I filled it out Monday morning. I wouldn't have any idea as to what to change.

The SEC is getting HD instant replay next year. How could it have taken this long?

Blogger CHB said...

Now if they could only get the SEC officials to see in HD so that they can make the correct calls.

Cincy, Atl is not much further than Huntsville from Chelsea, so that wouldn't be too bad.

Why are the SEC refs struggling?

Is it faster athletes causing more close-hard to call plays?

Subconscious effects of boisterous fans?

Too much loyalty to seasoned refs that should move on?

Nepotism causing poor ref selection?

The SEC also seems to have more video reviews than other conferences.

Other than celebration interpretation, the SEC rules are the same as other conferences.
