Post-practice chatter

Hey everyone. The Tigers have ended their 2-hour practice. Here is what we learned.

  • Signee Shon Coleman, a highly rated offensive tackle, has been diagnosed with an unusual medical condition. It is treatable. Research suggests >80% of people under the age of 25 diagnosed with the condition are cured. Coach Gene Chizik acknowledged that Coleman is dealing with a "medical issue" and that he's been in contact with Coleman. It's unclear how this situation will affect Coleman's career.

  • Recall that this could be the third consecutive year that an Auburn signee has been sidelined with a non-football issue ... DE Andre Wadley in 2008 and OL Aubrey Phillips in 2009.

  • Assistant coach Curtis Luper was quick to point out that Mario Fannin isn't yet the team's No. 1 tailback. He's simply competing for the job along with Onterio McCalebb and Dontae Aycock.

  • Aycock missed practice today because he is ill.

  • Fannin said he still thinks about that South Florida game from 2007, which saw him lose two fumbles. He believes that was supposed to be his "break-out" game and that his career would have developed differently without the fumbles.

  • Assistant coach Trooper Taylor said DeAngelo Benton has made significant progress since last season and now is exhibiting reliability previously demonstrated only by Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery.

  • Demond Washington seems content with his recent move back to cornerback. His speed, size and lateral quickness seem to be a better play at that position. The Tallassee native moonlighted at safety in 2009 because of injuries and depth problems.

  1. Too bad Fannin still caries the ball like a loose loaf of bread.

  2. godspeed Coleman. yikes.

  5. where are the other 5 posts?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Here we go with the weird comment posts disappearing.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Fannin needs to get past that. The best players are able to learn from mistakes, then forget they happen. It sounds like anything but perfection haunts him. Live in 2010, Wario!

    ReplyDelete
  8. that's good to hear about Benton. we need him to step up.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Post-practice notes are friggin' awesome!

  10. I love spring ball, hope springs eternal.

    ReplyDelete
  11. As I refreshed the count went up by one but there were no new comments. WEIRD. Puter's are very WEIRD

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ms Cleo told me that Aycock will be the man at tailback this year so I'm going with that.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Good point, PF.

Blogger Tate - thanks for the great news about DeAngelo.

I think Demond could be a superb CB. I can't remember, is he a SR?

  15. Jay G,

Just read on some ESPN dude's column a letter about how the beat hacks got to participate in LSU's pro day. This dude fell and broke his collar bone running the 40.

Who among Auburn beat hacks would win EAABWAA's "Beat Hack Most Likely to Break the Collar Bone at Pro Day" Award?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sometimes Blogger's comments numbering system goes haywire.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Fannin is right. Fumbles can kill a runningback's career. It doesn't take that many.

    ReplyDelete
  18. As for Benton, that is big news. Zachery and Fannin were okay last season, but Adams was really our only go to receiver.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Zachary, Mr. Big Play himself? Just alright?

    ReplyDelete
  20. ...unless you're a superstar running back. Adrian Peterson fumbles a lot.

  21. According to the airline web site,2.0's plane landed at the Oslo airport about 20 minutes ago. It is 22 miles N of Oslo and at 60.193681 North latitude. That's getting on up there! She's just spending the night there before heading further north tomorrow.

Hopefully, she'll check in to HABOTN and provide the updates some of you requested.

  25. THT,

Norway is beautiful. 2.0 will LOVE it there. Oslo is the biggest city, but it is kindof the business sector, nothing too exciting or cultural happens there. Bergen is the best city there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. THT - I bet it's cold that far up north. I don't care for that type of cold.

I notice an Alpharetta, GA on Feedjit. That's interesting to me since I believe I'm the only Hottie working/living in that area. The thing is, I'm not there currently. This week, I'm all the way over in Santa Rosa, CA. Maybe since I'm working off my corporate network remotely it somehow figures Alpharetta. Anyway...

  34. that's barely enough for one pit crew. I'm going out on a limb and assume your count is limited to the fans in attendance ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. PF, where did you go yesterday? i can't remember.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Norm - although 350 miles away, I'm the Alpharetta person today.

  38. Scottie,

Drove up to Tampa for the Indy Car race, ate lunch at Keegan's in Indian Rocks Beach (as seen on Divers Drive-Ins and Dives), watched the weather get worse, then drove home.

  39. Seal lasagna? Is that a serious food?

    ReplyDelete
  42. where did you live, WEG?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Why have I not seen Ralph Spy's name mentioned anywhere before Chris Low wrote a blurb on him today? I forgot he was even at Auburn, now we're hearing Trooper likes him.

    ReplyDelete
  44. that's hilarious, PF. My teeth are so bad it's a moot point where I live. And MrsTHT's teeth are so perfect, it's a moot point where she lives.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Me too digger. But the digger eagle® is flying proud...so you got that going for you.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yea, I considered Zachery alright, not outstanding. While a he seemed to get a lot of long catches, he didn't get nearly as many catches as Adams and they weren't typically the go to type catches.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I just got a google server error. First time I've ever seen such.

    ReplyDelete
  55. As for fumbling runningbacks, there was one with the 49ers and then the Eagles back in the 80s. When he didn't fumble he was great, but his fumbles really hurt his career.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am very curious about Ralph Spry too. Apparently his dad is a coach at Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  57. ehyou

    ReplyDelete

Mario shouldn't forgive himself yet. I know I haven't. His debt remains on the books until he does something special this year.

Hearing good stuff about Tony the Tiger.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Auburn Baseball still the top hitting team in the SEC.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I lived down the road from a pond. There was a big gator in it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. but far from the top in pitching... which is the problem.... that and errors

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yeah, it's got a pool...and a pond. Pond would be good for you.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Chris Low is here today.

I'm guessing that means you'll get some Auburn stuff on his blog as the day progresses.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Received an interesting tweet, but there is not story linked: "BreakingNews: Tennessee man pleads guilty to plotting to kill Barack Obama, dozens of other black people in 2008".

Anyone heard about this? Apparently someone found another stupid reason to go to jail.

    ReplyDelete
  89. As for SupurMario's talk about the Auburn Parking Gestapo -- I never park illegally. Never. I know I'll be the guy they get the one time I park illegally.

    So, no, it wasn't me.

    ReplyDelete
  90. a friend of mine was diagnosed with another form of leukemia a few months ago. he had to spend a week or two in and out of the hospital to get things under control. now it is just pills for the rest of his life and the prognosis is good. i hope SC has the same type of future.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm happy with Auburn pitching at this point. There's still some issues, but he starters are mostly eating up innings, and the bullpen has come a long way...

Errors, on the other hand suck, even if almost everyone has been moved around.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have to agree with PF on the error thing. We had a pitchout in Saturday's game that the Abbott & Costello would have been proud of.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I just read where South Carolina is running the "Wild Cock" formation. Now, doesn't that sound scary.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Scottie B with the clutch performance. I'm not even in his league.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I love hearing IT geeks argue on conference calls about who is doing something stupid and who doesn't understand the impacts of what they are saying.

This thirty minute call has been going on for an hour and a half.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anybody see the clip of Tebow helping a dude propose to his girlfriend?

    Tebow

My only question....Which HABOTN Hottie is this?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Let me state this plainly. There is nothing more redneckish than combining college football and wedding plans.

    ReplyDelete
  98. This has got me thinking. What Auburn standout would I want to help me propose to prospective wife?

Maybe Bo Jackson, and I'll have him say, "Bo Knows Commitment."

    ReplyDelete
  99. Oh, I don't know about that, Steve. A little football mixed in works great. My daughter had a very classic, beautiful wedding, but we had the Auburn Tiger Eyes for the groom's cake. And they left the reception at the Grand National to everyone waving Auburn shakers imprinted with their names and the date. It was AUsome!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. You have to have your priorities. Due to risk management, I cannot say which should be put first, but you have to have your priorities. Lumping things together can spoil both.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Why oh why do I feel the need to read the comments after videos?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  102. I hear what you're saying Steve, but I'll defer to the all wise and knowing Cincy on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Thanks, E-Bro, I don't know much, but I KNOW weddings :)

    ReplyDelete
  104. I hear Big Al has gone as far as Vegas for weddings.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Here's a little taste of a classy Auburn wedding :)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Okay Cincy, you got me. I do like the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  107. cincy...

I'm sure it was a beautiful event, but i just can't look.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Beautiful indeed Cincy. The template for all future Auburn themed weddings no doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Two of my favorite things - Auburn and weddings! Both just make me smile.

    ReplyDelete
  110. FSJ - not only have I been on those calls but I've been in the meetings with the people in question all in the same room. My first day on my big L.A. project last year I was stuck in a meeting which started at 5p and lasted until well after 9p. If they'd skipped the finger pointing and blame game, that meeting could've been 1 hour tops. Unfortunately, I was just an "invited guest observer" and not functioning in my role as PM. I'd have NEVER allowed any of my meetings to fall into that type of crap. It's no wonder the timelines on that massive project are shot.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Yeah Norm..I wasn't running this one but it essentially turned into a shouting match.

Two guys married to their positions that were in conflict with one another.

    High comedy.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Fannin is not the only one who still thinks about that USF game in 07...ugh!

Ralph Spry was one of the WRs that got mentioned quite often last year when players were reporting on their closed scrimmages. I recall hearing about him scoring several TDs and doing well overall. It should be interesting to see if he can break into the rotation.

    ReplyDelete
  113. FSJ,
That is where my son has carved out a little niche for himself while in college. He was the middle man between the IT computer geeks and the business leaders who knew what they wanted but didn't speak computerese. It has worked well for him as a college business, hopefully it is going to translate to a real job in the next few days :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. FSJ - I bet while you were in the meeting, you texted others in there with you about the two folks in particular.

    ReplyDelete
  115. cincy,

Auburn actually has a minor program designed to solve that very problem, called Business-Engineering-Technology. It basically teams engineering and business students together and forces them to develop a product with a business plan, then pitch it.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Yeah..except I was using our IM platform.

We were comparing it to a geek version of Ali-Frazier

    ReplyDelete
  117. Blake,
Tyler did kind of the same thing, got his Industrial and Systems Engineering degree with a minor in business and a minor in computer something.

I know it will sound like a bragging mama (and I am) but Tyler is a rare mix of a very analytical thinker and a great people person. My husband says he is an engineer with a personality :) I think he will do great things! He loves working with business leaders and computer geeks and translating between the two.

    ReplyDelete
  118. cincy,

That is awesome, my Dad always calls me an accountant with a personality. Unfortunately I felt like the only one, so I am pursuing the entrepreneurial path instead of sticking to the only industry not only still hiring, but recruiting on campus :'(

    Is Tyler still in Auburn?

    ReplyDelete
  119. He is. He graduates in May. He has had several job offers and is currently waiting on the one he really wants with a company in Huntsville. He has done the HR interview and is just waiting on the formal offer. Or that is the hope.

    ReplyDelete
  120. He is in 10x better shape than most of my friends, I bet you are proud!

I am running a few franchise tax offices in Auburn/Opelika for now, but I want to start my own business that would use Tyler's skill set. I will have to keep him in mind as a potential poaching target once I get off the ground ;)

    ReplyDelete
  121. There is nothing more entertaining than a good ole fashioned geek fight if you getting payed by the hour to listen to it. When you switch from consultant to salaried employee, somehow it changes.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Exactly Steve.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Ferb is totally infatuated with Vanessa Doofenshmirtz. I can't say that I blame him.

    ReplyDelete
  124. that made absolutely no sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  125. THT...
    Get with it man.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Wait, I got engaged on ESPN College Gameday. Someone (I still don't know who) custom made a banner for us that they hung outside of our rehearsal dinner with an Auburn and UGA helmet. The only hint of football at the wedding was my father in law's bowtie, which was a subtle and classy piece, though. We did have the Outback Bowl on at brunch the next morning, but it was not intrusive. I don't think we're rednecks, but college football played a big part in developing our relationship, so we had some elements naturally woven into some of the periphrials of our wedding. I doubt many here have been to a classier event.

That being said, having Tebow involved does scream redneck. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  127. Blake,

I have personality damnit. Just ask me!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Blake,
I vouch for PF, he is full of personality. He's cute, too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  129. You doubt many here have been to a classier event?

    Three words: Waffle House Wedding.

    Get some.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Well, if many of the hotties have been to Waffle House Weddings, then I stand corrected. It don't get no classier than that right there.

That line could be intrepreted as something unbecoming. Please pretend you didn't read it.

    ReplyDelete
  131. E-Bro...I'll take your Waffle House and raise you a Wal-Mart wedding..

    ReplyDelete
  132. That video was truly frightening.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Wonder if they had a chicken melt after the ceremony?

    ReplyDelete
  134. I feel it is morally wrong to schedule a wedding on a Saturday during football season.

I had an ex who tried to tell me she wanted a fall wedding. I told her that was fine, I had always liked the idea of a wedding on a Friday night.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Man, I love the bleacher report. I was reading an article explaining why we would win the west and right near the top it says we had "inexperienced linebackers". Ummm, we likely had the most experienced linebackers in the nation. There just wasn't many of them. Okay, ElToro wasn't up to speed, but inexperienced linebackers was far from the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  136. 115 snaps in one game sounds like experience.

    ReplyDelete
  137. A great story about one of our guys. Hope it's okay to post this link. Sorry if this has been discussed already.

  140. All you sleepy heads, I just spoke briefly to 2.0; she was on the bus from the airport to town (Tromso, Norway), at 69.68 N latitude, it is well inside the Arctic Circle.

Her internet signal was very weak at hotel last night, but she did see your posts yesterday. She hopes for greater success this afternoon when she checks in to her Tromso hotel. In the meantime, she's off to get some lunch. I forgot to ask her if she was going to try the seal lasagna.

    ReplyDelete
  141. God morgen fra Tromsø, Hotties!

  142. Good morning all. Got up to do my 1st morning workout. Kind of tired but I heard working out in the morning is the best. This is the start of my 2nd week of P90X. I feel like I'm about the vomit. Just though you all should know.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Good morning, PF.

CH=B - I just googled that to see what you were talking about. It looks painful.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I don't know if this has been posted, but saw it on a board on another site.

The Marietta Daily Journal had a sweet story about a teen-aged Down's syndrome girl going to her high school senior prom. A lifelong friend had asked her last summer. The boy was Philip Lutzenkirchen.

On the day before the prom, the girl had a high fever -- as high as 102, but was able get it under control. On the morning of the prom, the story said Lutzenkirchen suffered a concussion at practice. Due to medical advice, he was held in Auburn too late to be there for pre-prom photos, but did arrive at the dance to keep his date with the girl.

So that answers the question about Lutzenkirchen, but tells us something even more.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Jet, you big sleepy head. You've got to get up earlier than this if you want to scoop Dale.

    ReplyDelete
  146. That article reminds me why I love Auburn and her people. It is about so much more than football.

    ReplyDelete
