Pro Day

Hey everyone. We are live from the Watson Fieldhouse, where the standard tests are being administered.

Today's participants:
DE/LB Antonio Coleman
CB Walt McFadden
TE/DE Gabe McKenzie
DT Jake Ricks
QB Chris Todd
DB Gabe Barrett (walk-on)
TE Robert Johnson (last season at Auburn was 2003, I believe)
TB Brad Lester (last season at Auburn was 2008)
WR Montez Billings
WR Robert Dunn (last season at Auburn was 2008)
?? Maurice Smith (Olympic decathlete, competed at Auburn)

**Ben Tate apparently is not working out today. He submitted to a weigh-in, but oddly didn't want people measuring his height.

**McFadden had the fastest 40 time. His first was 4.42. His second was 4.39.

**Billings had a pair of mid-4.4 runs.

**I think the scouts were surprised (pleasantly) by Johnson's 4.9.

**Billings is the early leader on the long jump: 10 feet, 6.5 inches.

**Lester was at 10-2.5.

**Maurice Smith, the former Olympic decathlete, jumped a 10-3.

**More long jump numbers: Walt McFadden (10-3.5), Coleman (9-8) and McKenzie (10-4).

**Gabe McKenzie (above) is ready to work today. He posted a 10-4 jump (the second best of the day among all players), a 37" vert jump and a 4.6 in the 40. He's in great shape.

**Coleman ran a 6.8 in the "three cone drill," which didn't seem to shock scouts. Or maybe they were hiding their enthusiasm. That could be the case.

**Scouts were more enthusiastic about McFadden's work in the three cone drill. I can't give you time, but I assure you the scouts were impressed.

**Here are the numbers from the bench press. It's a matter of how many repetitions of 225 pounds each player can complete: McKenzie (22), Lester (22), Ricks (15), Barrett (14), Todd (13), Robert Johnson (12), Maurice Smith (12), McFadden (5).

**Tate (combine), Coleman (combine), Billings (personal decision) and Dunn (personal decision) didn't compete in the bench press.

Great news about Gabe. He looks like a beast, never could understand why he didn't excel at AU

2:09 PM

With this new coaching staff Gabe became the fogotten man, I don't know why. I always thought he had a ton of talent.

2:12 PM
Blogger SteveFC said...

I was disappointed with Gabe's Auburn career too. He just never seemed to find the right spot or something.

Robert Johnson is someone I expected to be playing in the NFL.

you guys think the 50 yd facility makes Todd's arm look twice as strong?

2:23 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Just watched a bunch of guys do the "three-cone drill," which actually requires five cones.

I can't really explain the significance of that drill.

2:27 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Forrest, I didn't get Dunn's time. I'll ask around and see what other people had.

Judging from the scouts' reaction, Dunn's time was not impressive.

2:27 PM
Blogger dan dan the AU fan said...

Speaking of C. Todd, what was his forty time? Do they stop counting after 8 or 9 seconds.

2:28 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

As for why I didn't have Dunn on the initial list ... I'm busy running around and trying to get information from drill stations that are active concurrently.

I have added Dunn's name to the list.

2:29 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Bench press next.

I'll have a full report (times, jumps, etc.) at day's end. I can't get it all right now.

2:30 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

i bet Dunn kills at the "catch a punt and run nowhere" drill

2:31 PM
Blogger Forrest said...

Thanks Jay, I wasn't trying to get on you... He told me yesterday he was in town for the Pro Day so I was just wondering... appreciate you getting all of this info to us so quick. Anyone know the reason Trott isn't going through these drills? He atleast warrants a free agent signing I would think?

2:33 PM
Blogger Forrest said...

I bet you felt alot better with him returning punts 2 years ago than you did last year Harrison... not to mention you probably couldn't catch an SEC punt in 50 tries

2:35 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

You related to Rober Dunn, Forrest? and I definitely could catch at least 1 out of 50.

2:40 PM
Blogger Seanachie said...

Not sure why the scouts didn't like Coleman's 3-Cone time. The top 5 times for LBs at the combine:

Cody Grimm 6.58
Kyle Bosworth 6.67
Mike McLaughlin 6.85
Josh Hull 6.86
Jamar Chaney 6.90

2:43 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Tommy Trott has no desire to play professional football. He is not participating in Pro Day, though he's here watching.

2:46 PM
Blogger Hoopie said...

Ouch! I'm with Harrison on this.

I'm not normally in favor of slamming present or former players. I do however, make exceptions for players with bad attitudes. Dunn had more than an allowable share of scrapes with correctness.

Maybe the Pros can figger out how to get Gabe on the field. An athlete like him might at least make a practice squad and eventually carve out a career. He deserves all the best.

2:47 PM
Blogger Seanachie said...

Jay G -
Is there any talk about Gabe's potential position in the pros? TE? DE? With his times and size, he could probably play OLB in the 3-4.

2:49 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

I'm not in favor of slamming them either, but a well-timed joked is always welcome in my book

2:49 PM

2:50 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Can we make this 50 punt challenge work? We've still got a punter who will never see the field that the coaches will loan us, right?

2:51 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

**Overheard:

SCOUT A:"Coach, why is Billings not participating? I have to put something in the box. I get paid by the box."

SCOUT B: "That's what she said."

I thought it was hilarious!

2:52 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Sean, scouts don't like discussing that stuff with me. I think they're paranoid about what other teams are thinking.

I think McKenzie will garner some free-agent attention.

2:53 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Forrest, I'm putting that on the blog front. Really awesome final sentence.

2:54 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

5 reps for McFadden? Is that acceptable for a DB? I could do more than that in college and I only weighed about 155.

2:55 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Gave has no real defined position. But, his athleticism could get him drafted in the later rounds as a special teams guy. From there he could work his way into a role with coaching at 1 position, my guess DE.

Bring it on, Coffee Cup! I'll even buy you a cup of coffee over which to discuss :)

ha, go for it... and Lester is obviously a beast

On Trott, is there no money to be made in at least signing a FA contract and then being cut?

2:57 PM
Blogger Miller said...

That should say Gabe. Not Gave.

2:57 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

OK, so I had to go look up Devin Hester

that's crazy. me & Gabe are built exactly the same. maybe i should've had my own pro day. ;)

3:01 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Harrison,
I remember that - just didn't know who it was.

3:02 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Lester ran with no heart in 2008. I'm no scout, but that would prevent me from showing interest in him ... regardless of how fast or strong he is now.

3:02 PM
Blogger Coffee Cup said...

Cincy,
I only wrote 6 contracts in all of 2009. I have written 4 in the last 3 weeks. It seems as if everyone has decided all of the sudden that the market has bottomed and it's time to move or get left behind. Good things in the near future for you.

3:04 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Harrison,
Do you do yoga? Wikipedia says Dwight owns a yoga studio.

3:04 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I'm gonna hve a hard time putting Harrison's punt challenege together if you keep adding stuff. Now I've got to find people to run at him and 85,000 people that aren't going to get bored watching punts for a few hours.

Does he get the fair catch option, or is this supposed to end like that Jackass episode when Johnny Knoxville took a similar challenge?

3:06 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Thanks, CC,
Realtors in Auburn say people are just waiting later to buy this year. Whereas in the past they have bought in Jan - Feb, they think they will be buying in more like April - May. Put off spending that money as long as possible I guess.

Glad your business is picking up. Maybe the rest of this year will be a great one for you!

3:06 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

Nope. I was mainly talking in punt catching skills and speed. Not off the field activities.

3:06 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

PF- I bet i know at least 50 people that would love to come watch this, if that helps any

3:07 PM
Blogger Coffee Cup said...

One would think that by just looking at that picture of Gabe some NFL team would make room on their roster

3:07 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

PF,
Well, I will come watch, so you only need 84,999 more. But, I won't run at him.

3:08 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Scottie B, if by "same build" you mean that you both have 2 legs and 2 arms. Then yes, you are correct.

3:08 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I'd say I feel like Devin Hester behind the keyboard, but my butt is less than half the size of his. People would laugh at me if the back of my pants fell down.

3:09 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Does Harrison get blockers?

3:09 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

absolutely I do. Robert Dunn had blockers

3:10 PM
Blogger Hoopie said...

Scottie ..I'm built like Gabe also!! ..well except that I'm an inch shorter and have 35 lbs of muscle that has slipped from my shoulders and limbs to my waist.

3:10 PM
Blogger Jet Hates UAT said...

Or Dustin Hester.

3:10 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

maybe Dunn was awesome and all 10 of his blockers sucked

3:10 PM
Blogger Forrest said...

All you need : one SEC punter ( willing to punt 50 balls), a football, and a bag of popcorn.

Wait, we should probably give him a helmet also... I'd hate for him to misjudge one and break his nose or lose any teeth.

3:11 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I'll run at him screaming like a banshee. Does that also count towards the 85000?

3:11 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

I'm not trying to decide whether you will be dealing with the exact same scenario as Dunn. I'm trying to decide whether I want to come watch.

3:12 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Johnny Knoxville didn't get blockers. We're going to need a ruling from Forrest.

3:12 PM
Blogger scottie 'ochocinco' b said...

Miller is on my poo-poo list. ;)

i can outfit our HABOTN punt returner in full pads & helmet if needed.

3:12 PM
Blogger scottie 'ochocinco' b said...

lol at Johnny Knoxville. nice.

3:12 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

you do Scott. If you don't have fun I will take you out for beers afterwards. If I'm not too tired returning punts for touchdowns

3:13 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Now we don't need 85,011? Hey-sus H., Forrest. Make up your mind.

3:15 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Sold! Yeah, 50 touchdowns is a lot.

3:15 PM
Blogger Hoopie said...

Helmet and shoulder pads definitely will add to the punt receiving challenge.

3:16 PM
Blogger Hoopie said...

PF ..might I suggest we set this up for the morning before the A-day game.

3:18 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

How about a straitjacket and some leg braces? That would be pretty cool, too.

3:18 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

i better get to practicing

3:20 PM
Blogger Forrest said...

I was trying to make it as easy as possible for the guy... I'll let the majority decide the parameters, or we can see if Chiz will let Harrison go out on the field during halftime of A-Day... It won't be 85k but enough to prove the point.

I'll give anyone who want in 10:1 odds on 100$ ol' buddy doesn't catch one

3:20 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Uh oh...THT just fell down on the job!

3:21 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

For the record, I watched UGA's winpy backup QB fair catch punts all last season. I think Harrison can get at least one in 50.

3:22 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

yeah I'm not college level athlete, but i can catch

3:22 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Yeah, I'll take Harrison if he only has to catch 1 out of 50.

3:22 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

10:1 odds on $100 that he doesn't catch 1 in 50? I'd take that.

3:23 PM
Blogger Coffee Cup said...

I vote Harrison at halftime of A-Day. Would add some extra excitement to a date already circled on the calendar

3:25 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I know how hard catching a well kicked punt is, but I think I could "catch" one in my facemask just by keeping my eye on the ball if you give me 50 tries.

I also don't trust that at least one in 50 is going to be flubbed and easy enough for anyone to catch. The leg is going to wear out.

3:27 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

You guys are invited to my victory party afterwards at my house.

3:28 PM
Blogger Forrest said...

hey Peter, you do realize you just equated him to another SEC athlete, which I'm assuming you weren't Harrison? and in full pads I will gladly bet you...

The helmet alone is going to cause significant problems...

" Man, I swear! If coach would've put me in, I know we would've won state!!"

3:30 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Especially if Forrest is paying for the party

3:30 PM
Blogger Sensi the Sidewalker said...

What position is McKenzie trying to project to? TE or DE/OLB?

3:31 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

nice assumption Forrest since I just said that 5 minutes ago. I never said anything about being a great athlete, just that I would catch 1 in 50 punts

3:32 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

This is getting ridiculous. The trainers are out there before games making over the shoulder catches of punts. Yes, the helmet would make it more difficult, but 1 in 50 shouldn't be too tough for someone with any type of athletic ability.

3:33 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

Being good at ping-pong should equate to being somewhat athletic..right?

3:36 PM
Blogger Forrest said...

Okay, just a tangential thought here... was I the only person watching AU football last year or did we not send everyone but the trainers out there to try and return punts?

Point being, Dunn was reliable. I never said he should go down in CFB hall of fame, only that returning kicks is alot harder than it looks and until Harrison can get out there and show us he's atleast capable of catching one, just pipe down on the negativity

3:42 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

I can't pipe down negativity it's what feeds my soul. That and baby seal meat

3:47 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Baby seal meat wrapped in bacon and put on the grill is the best.

3:48 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

I couldn't catch a punt. I am strictly an athletic supporter.

3:50 PM

I think we can all agree that Dunn was better than what we had last year.

4:01 PM

i would agree to to that and i would agree it's Puppet Hour...arrgghh.

Forrest, I think everyone got the point. Please forgive us for a having a little fun with it. I understand, giveen your obvious relationship with Dunn, that you took Harrson's joke a little personal. He wasn't really downing the guy, just spreading a little humor. Like most jokes, there was a little fact and a little exageration. Tell Mr. Dunn that we're all pulling for him.
