Quick chat with Jessel Curry

Hey everyone. Freshman linebacker Jessel Curry just stopped by for a short chat. He graduated from high school a semester early, enrolled at Auburn in January and is going through spring practice right now.

Not too shabby for a 17-year-old kid, no?

Here's an overview:

  • He said the toughest part of the transition is learning what Ted Roof wants him to do. Curry said everything he was taught in high school is "the exact opposite" of what Auburn requires of its linebackers.

  • Asked to elaborate, Curry said Auburn's defense emphasizes leverage ... or funneling runners toward the middle of the field. In high school, he played the see-ball-hit-ball game.

  • He has no regrets about missing the second semester of his senior season. "I’ve never been to a prom or homecoming, so I wouldn’t even want to goback. That’d be a waste of money to me."

  • He's playing on the strong side behind Eltoro Freeman.

  • He's named after his father and paternal grandfather, though he realizes very few people around here are named Jessel. He said a quick Facebook search showed that most Jessels live in the Phillippines. "I'm trying to put two and two together ... but I don't get it."

  3. I was gonna type Rielle Hunter substance...until I realized that was an oxymoron.

By that time scottie had beat me to the punch.

  4. FSJ, I played Sawgrass two yrs ago. It was tough but if you have played RTJ in Prattville you can see where I am coming from.

    ReplyDelete
  5. He could make Bill Simmons's Reggie Cleveland All Stars with that name.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thanks for the linebacker substance. Curry and Sanders are going to be interesting to see. Coming in early, I am hoping they get to see some playing time.

  7. I have played several of the RTJ courses. I want to play the one in Opelika too.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Personally, I've always thought RTJ Greenville was the toughest. I've played RTJ Opelika, Dothan, Prattville, Mobile and Greenville. Greenville has always given me fits.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Norm,

You played the one near Gadsden?

    ReplyDelete
  10. The one in Opelika is fun. When I was in school we would play during off peak times at a pretty good rate. We would play the par 3 course a lot because we were poor and you could play for like $18 for a couple of months

    ReplyDelete
  11. I've only played Dothan (since I'm from Ozark), Opelika and Prattville. I have heard Greenville is very tough, but the toughest I'm told is the one in Anniston.

    ReplyDelete
  12. FSJ - nope, haven't made it to that one.

I'll also add that when I played Dothan, it was a week after they'd held the Nike Tour Championship (back when it was called that) so we played in near tournament conditions. Only the Lord could help you then if your ball didn't land square in the fairway. The rough was BRUTAL. Gave me a whole new appreciation for what the pros can do.

  13. CH=B,

The one you are referring to is Silver Lakes. For some reason they say it is in Anniston but it is much closer to Gadsden than Anniston.

It is very tough. Huge greens. You have to place the ball in the proper spot on the green or you are facing very tricky putts.

  16. I think one of the courses is called the Mind Bender.

    No heartbreaker.

  18. Lemme tellya sumthin ...

I think it's time HOTTIES predict the QB depth chart at the end of spring practice.

  19. The three I mentioned are correct (with the exception of headbanger. I was confused.

  22. As much as I want to pick something against the grain, I still keep seeing...
    1) Newton
    2) Caudle
    3) Mosley
    4) Trotter

It just doesn't make sense to bring in Newton without thinking he'd be able to make a huge impact and start his remaining 2 years. He's shown a lot of dedication to the program too (skipping spring break). However, that doesn't take away from what the coaches have said in interviews about the others. It seems like they all want the job pretty bad.

Anybody know how to make these videos
(All videos are in ISO MPEG4 (FMP4) format. All videos will play in VLC media player.) play in the Safari or Firefox browser window?

Right now, the only way I can get them to play is copy the URL, open VLC and paste the URL in there.

  29. I missed posting on the last few threads, so...

2.0, I am SOOOOOO jealous. Your trip sounds absolutely fabulous! I do hope you are taking lots of pictures to remember all this.

In regard to Dee Ford trying to gain weight - I would think it was heaven on earth if I got to "try and gain weight". My son always asks me how he can gain some weight. It is one of the few times I would like to slap him. just kidding...kind of.

The perfect temperature is between 68 and 74 degrees.

    That is all for now.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Cincy - are you on FB?

    ReplyDelete
  31. No, but I guess I am going to have to break down and get on.

    ReplyDelete
  32. No Michael, I would have to be IVth on Jet's QB depth chart.

    ReplyDelete
  33. DON'T DO IT! Cincy... although you could see 2.0's photos that way.

You can join Harrison and myself in our plan to be the last remaining humans not on FB.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The QB depth chart guesses are pretty much as expected: Newton first, Trotter last, and Caudle/Moseley in there somewhere. That is probably the best guess we will have, mainly since we haven't seen enough of Moseley to know very much.

    ReplyDelete
  35. speaking of facebook, I still haven't been accepted to join the HABOTN page.

    ReplyDelete
  36. FSJ- I'll go play the RTJ in Gadsden with you sometime. Not too far from my house. Enjoy the course.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lets start a HABOTN scramble tourney.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sounds good.

I love the course although it eats my lunch.

    ReplyDelete
  39. CH=B- I'm in. That would be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  40. THt, there's plugin. I don't remember the name.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I live in trussville, where are you guys at?

    ReplyDelete
  42. CH=B,
Your sentence reminds me of a funny quote I read in George Will's book on baseball. Once when the Yankee's Lou Pinella was batting he questioned a Palermo strike call. Pinella demanded, "Where was that pitch at?" Palermo told him that a man wearing Yankee pinstripes in front of 30,000 people should not end a sentence with a preposition. So Pinella, no dummy, said, "OK, where was that pitch at,
    a--hole?"

I laugh because I frequently end questions with at and then think of that quote.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Should be "Piniella"

    ReplyDelete
  44. That'e pretty funny.

It was better than the ebonics version. Where you be?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I like Lou. He has lots of funny quotes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It can be perfectly acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition. However, if it does not add anything to the sentence, then you should leave it off.

"What are you sitting on?" is fine

"Where is it at?" is not.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I truly wasn't correcting you CH. I just think that quote is hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I came up with an idea today.

I'm going to rank all of Auburn's scholarship players in terms of overall value. It would be mean to go all the way to 83 or whatever. I'll just do a top 40.

I'm still trying to determine some semi-scientific way to make these determinations.

    Key factors:
    a.) Talent
b.) Value over a replacement player
    c.) College production

Ideas? I bet we have some mathy people out there who can give me ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  49. cincytiger = no mathy - unless we are talking money, then I can be mathy

    ReplyDelete
  50. What if a non-scholarship player is more valuable than number 40 (or 25)?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Do you consider the categories equal? If so, 10 point sliding scale,Players get between 3-30, total score is higher player...

If not equal, 10 point sliding scale, take a weighted average, and each player is given a score or 1-10

Bonus points for uncategorized traits to settle ties.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't know. I haven't seen number 40 yet. Aren't there a couple of walk-ons that played last year? They'd get points for college production. What about yellow shoes guy?Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ooohh, PF, you make my head hurt

    ReplyDelete
  54. Example of uncategorized traits: Awesome nickname (Big Snacks!), Scout team hero, didn't return punts and fail...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Awesome, FSJ....that's pretty feeakin funny.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I count only 57 guys on scholarship on campus right now. So assuming they add 25 ... that's still only 82.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Kids can kick you in the heart :) Sounds like you are raising a very bright girl, FSJ

    ReplyDelete
  58. Tied 4~4 with Troy Going into the 8th thanks to an error and some early pitching miscues. The pitching, whatever, it's a freshman in his second start. Errors, grrrrrr!

    ReplyDelete
  59. B'ham peeps.... any of you play in a softball league? I need to find a team

    ReplyDelete
  60. Are you going to rank the guys coming in? They're going to get zeros in cat.3. Adjust my proposed scores to 2-30 and .67-10.
