The A-Day Game

Hey everyone. Here we go.

BLUE FIRST POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
8 plays, 24 yards, PUNT

FIRST WHITE POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
6 plays, 25 yards, PUNT ... Newton connected on his only throw for a 15-yard gain to Darvin Adams.

BLUE SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
TOUCHDOWN. Trotter 50 pass to Nathan Taylor (walk-on), beating Blake Poole (walk-on) deep. 6 plays, 80 yards.

WHITE SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Mario Fannin 2 run. 11 plays, 70 yards. Caudle was 6-for-6 on that drive, but the passes weren't challenging.

BLUE THIRD POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
MISSED FIELD GOAL. Chandler Brooks miss 22 FG. 5 plays, 65 yards. Newton was 2-for-4 for 64 yards. He completed a deep pass to Q. Carr for 61 yards, but the pass was far from perfect. It was a duck. Coverage was terrible.

WHITE THIRD POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
TOUCHDOWN. Trotter 44 pass to Terrell Zachery. 3 plays, 80 yards. Zachery took a simple screen pass and made it special. Kodi Burns made a great block just beyond the line-of-scrimmage and Zachery shed a few defenders for a long touchdown play.

BLUE FOURTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Caudle 70 pass to Q. Carr. 1 play, 70 yards. It was a screen that went awry when the cornerback over-pursued in a very bad way. Carr was fast enough to pull away from the walk-on defenders charged with pursuing him.

WHITE FOURTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
PUNT. Nothing going on.

BLUE FIFTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
PUNT. Nothing going on.

WHITE FIFTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
PUNT. Nothing going on. At all!

BLUE SIXTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
PUNT. Still nothing going on. We're in a major lull here.

WHITE SIXTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
HALF ENDS.

------CHANGE IN FORMAT-------

FIRST POSSESSION
Quarterback: Clint Moseley
FIELD GOAL. Wes Byrum 50 FG. Moseley hit Jay Wisner with a deep pass early in the drive. His performance was otherwise unremarkable.

SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Dontae Aycock short run.

Eddie thinks these helmet stickers look bigger ... and I think he's right.

Didn't see that much - just a few plays from Bama's second half which started on TV after the Auburn practice thing.

Why doesn't Auburn call this AU-Day?

Julio is the most over hyped WR's of all time. Not saying he isn't dangerous. He has all the physical tools one would want (speed, size and strength), but he just can't put it all together in my opinion. I mean when he was recruited there were people saying he was ready for the NFL right then. Sorry but NFL DB's would have a field day with him.

Finally made it home. Practice was fun. The arena is very nice. Not a bad seat in the place, even if you are waiting in line at the concession stand. The students will be right on the floor on 3 sides. It will be a great atmosphere.

Trooper was having fun today.

Great to see the old players there today. Ready for the season to start!

Great time at the game today. Don't like the larger logo on the helmet. Caudle and Trotter looked great. I think Cam was nervous. Long ball was short and would have been a TD if better, but a good ball. Overthrew J Wiz twice.

Only having seen the spring game - Caudle and Trotter give us a more dangerous offense with their speed. To be fair, Newton's power running game isn't best suited to one-hand touch, so the faster guys going outside looked better.

Arena rocks

wtc, Your comments lead me to assume that CN will be the QB. If that's the case and he was kept under wraps today, then the coaches must have also asked him to also exhibit poor fundamentals. This will sound similar to my comments regarding Kodi a few years ago, but I see athletic ability with poor Qb fundamentals. Newton never threw a pass with the same motion. He threw while off balance to either side or while falling back and was inaccurate.

He is tall and seems to be able to move to avoid and see downfield well. If he is the man, then let's hope that as he learns the offense he will settle down.

A day thoughts...Trotter looked the best. Newton is most likely the starter. Offense ran 5 plays...maybe. didn't recognize half the players. Hot as Hades. It was fun but not illuminating. Hoopie > Gustav @ QB coaching and evaluating.

VERY vanilla today... very much just another practice rather than a showcase for the fans...
Lots of positives for the fans to take from the game. Fewer questions, IMO.

Blogger E-Bro said...

I could hardly focus on the game because of the oversized helmet decal. Don't like it...at all.

I'm with Hoopie on what he says about Cam. It sounds like he'll be the starter, but my word, outside of his first pass, nothing looked fluid and natural with him. Hopefully that's just a case of nerves or still getting comfortable in the offense.

Hopefully...

Thought the game was a lot of fun, and realized that nothing was going to show from it. Liked the pace, and I hope it means we're going to be that much faster this fall. Can't believe there were 63,000 there. A full section of recruits got to see what the fans think of Auburn football, plus I think everyone wanted to see what this Cam Newton was all about. Kid has a very, very strong arm. It'll be interesting to see if he learns to have a little touch on the ball. The Auburn Helmet logo is bigger, I guess, yeah - that's probably no going to keep me from watching and cheering and frankly I don't really care. Coolest part of the game was meeting Gerald Williams in line at the concession stand. Couldn't help but think about all those Auburn defenses that didn't let the other teams cross the 50 until the 4th quarter, and always ruined the up and coming Heisman candidate's day.

8:21 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Good morning all. Seanzie, two great choices there. Stop by Momma G's for me. I didn't get a chance to yesterday.

I think Newton was a little unsettled for a couple of reasons. First he wasn't able to get in a rhythm because he wasn't in for enough plays. He only got the throw 8 passes. Second he is used to being able to run or at least scramble a little more before throwing. I think he probably rushed a couple of throws because he knew if someone got near him they would blow the play dead. I know the other Qb's were playing under the same rules but they also had the benefit of more passes and their game is different than his.

Also noticed that when not playing , Caudle, Trotter, & Moseley flipped the chart. Not Cam. He stood a few feet back behind the other two that were not playing.

It was definitely just a day to enjoy some time on the Plains.

Coach Barbee got a good welcome from the fans. He was probably pretty overwhelmed with the crowd that showed up for the game. I think he will see a nice crowd for the opening of bb. I hope it continues. Those students living in the Village have no excuse not to go to the games. All they have to do is walk outside their building. Very convenient for them.

Is anyone else as "concerned" about the kicking game as I am?

I really think having a kicker than can consistently produce touch-backs could really take a lot of pressure off of the work-in-progress defense. It's hard on the other team when they have to drive 80 yards all of the time.

I think Washington is emerging as a good kick return threat. That's an improvement.

I still have many concerns over the directional punting game. Still can't wrap my head around what happened to Shoe.

9:51 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

Too early to really be concerned about any phase of the game but..
the kickoffs and punting need a lot of work.
The defense is still missing tackles and taking bad angles to the ball carrier.
The offense looks to be ahead of the defense.
Great day and great crowd.

10:34 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

You people just don't understand the value of the onside punt. It virtually eliminates returns and the other team's primary returner never gets to touch the ball.

I would encourage everyone to make a .25 cent donation in honor of each point our team scored today to the Shon Coleman tribute. Let's reward children for OUR teams performance on the field at ADAY. There were 38 total points scored making a donation of 9.50. If we all make a donation in this honor the difference we make could be endless!

I can see the logic that Cam wasn't allowed to do much. I don't understand that logic though. Really doesn't make any sense to me. Caudle looked efficient, but I don't trust him when the pressure is on. Trotter has some pretty serious skills. He's better than Todd for sure, and he throws a great looking pass. Moseley has the most presence to me though, and the one long pass he threw was absolutely perfect. Maybe the summer produces a Cam which is the superstar we thought he would be. If it doesn't though, and if the QBs are all basically equal, then I play the red-shirt freshman. That would be Clint Moseley.

Cam's long throw wasn't particularly impressive. He underthrew it and it was one of the high arching variety, similar to what Todd would do.

Trotter, to me, seemed to have the strongest arm. The long passes he threw had some steam behind them.

Caudle looked sharp, but I am with you. I have trouble trusting him and a lot of his throws were very safe.

I wouldn't make too many assumptions based upon what we saw yesterday in terms of the QBs.

The player that probably affected his chance of playing time the most yesterday was Shoemaker.

QCarr being the offensive MVP was the biggest surprise of the day for me.

Luxembourg must be great. I am jealous. In a few years I will get to take a sabbatical, which is basically a couple of months off work. I am considering either traveling throughout the U.S. or Europe. I haven't decided yet.

Something else to take away. Whether or not Newton or whoever is the starter, out quarterback is certainly going be more athletic this season.

We already saw Caudle run a bit last year. We know (or are told) that Cam can tote the rock. And Trotter looked like he had pretty good mobility yesterday as well.

I can dig that. Now, Cam, about those passing mechanics...

They don't have the U.S. flag on the back, or the warning that it's not safe to use your head as a battering ram, with or without the lid.

What did I not like about the helmets? Too many underarmour logos.

What didn't matter to me? The AU logo possibly being a bit larger.

I thought the QB's looked pretty cool in their orange jerseys yesterday.

Auburn baseball (up 1-0 in the top of the second on ESPNU) is looking pretty sharp in their orange jerseys today as well.

Just sayin'.

1:24 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Baseball's orange jerseys are great looking. I like the orange football tops, but can see why it would offend some people...plus, some of the oranges have been wrong lately, which leads to some TV cameras making them look red. UnderArmour needs to watch that.

1:34 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The Stars and Bars doesn't belong on the helmet, either.

1:35 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Nike has had that problem as well with some (wait for it) soccer jerseys, except in reverse.

Some red tops sometimes come off looking orange.

1:39 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Wait, they have practice helmets now? I remeber last year when the helmets came in, the players practiced with plastic on them because Chiz didn't want them scratched up before the games. Are these new helmets those fancy super anti-concussion ones? I hope so. The NCAA should mandate them (if only because high schools would follow).

Ebro, there was something recently that bothered me on the baseball unis. I don't remember what it was, maybe a cap button or some piping, but the orange was way too bright (UF style). I've had the same complaint about the basketball unis in the past, though I don't know if that's still the case.

I think USC's helmets look pretty sharp with the American and SC flags on them. Then again, the SC flag is one of the best in the nation.

I guess I haven't ever thought about why the American flag (or Canadian in Hockey and formerly in baseball) is so prevelant in sports. I like how in the sports car racing world, the driver's names and their countries flags are on the doors.

It might serve a purpose on college football helmets if we ever played schools from another country, say Ohio, for example ;-)

2:00 PM

If I remember correctly, last year they used the game helmets because they were new and they wanted the players to get use to them. I believe it was the Chiz that commented on it. Maybe Jay remembers better.

Yea, PF, Europe is way out of my 5 mile radius, but I have my hope anyways. That is part of the reason the U.S. tour may be a bit more reasonable, but we will have to see.
