The A-Day Game

Hey everyone. Here we go.

BLUE FIRST POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
8 plays, 24 yards, PUNT

FIRST WHITE POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
6 plays, 25 yards, PUNT ... Newton connected on his only throw for a 15-yard gain to Darvin Adams.

BLUE SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
TOUCHDOWN. Trotter 50 pass to Nathan Taylor (walk-on), beating Blake Poole (walk-on) deep. 6 plays, 80 yards.

WHITE SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Mario Fannin 2 run. 11 plays, 70 yards. Caudle was 6-for-6 on that drive, but the passes weren't challenging.

BLUE THIRD POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
MISSED FIELD GOAL. Chandler Brooks miss 22 FG. 5 plays, 65 yards. Newton was 2-for-4 for 64 yards. He completed a deep pass to Q. Carr for 61 yards, but the pass was far from perfect. It was a duck. Coverage was terrible.

WHITE THIRD POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
TOUCHDOWN. Trotter 44 pass to Terrell Zachery. 3 plays, 80 yards. Zachery took a simple screen pass and made it special. Kodi Burns made a great block just beyond the line-of-scrimmage and Zachery shed a few defenders for a long touchdown play.

BLUE FOURTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Caudle 70 pass to Q. Carr. 1 play, 70 yards. It was a screen that went awry when the cornerback over-pursued in a very bad way. Carr was fast enough to pull away from the walk-on defenders charged with pursuing him.

WHITE FOURTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
PUNT. Nothing going on.

BLUE FIFTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
PUNT. Nothing going on.

WHITE FIFTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
PUNT. Nothing going on. At all!

BLUE SIXTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
PUNT. Still nothing going on. We're in a major lull here.

WHITE SIXTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
HALF ENDS.

------CHANGE IN FORMAT-------

FIRST POSSESSION
Quarterback: Clint Moseley
FIELD GOAL. Wes Byrum 50 FG. Moseley hit Jay Wisner with a deep pass early in the drive. His performance was otherwise unremarkable.

SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Dontae Aycock short run.

Eddie thinks these helmet stickers look bigger ... and I think he's right.

Cam is definitely has potential. He is not nearly as in tune with the O as Trotter and Caudle.

I'm convinced that we won't see a #1 QB announced until halfway into the fall practice.

2:08 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

So far Newton isn't looking like the man. Granted he could run the ball, but so far, he hasn't done anything to impress. If his ability is running the ball, call him a runningback.

Trotter has looked pretty good too.

QCarr has been a bit surprising to me. Looks like he is good to go.

Eddie, you are right. At one time in college football, they would consider redshirting a guy like him, but not these days. With kids turning pro early, you don't want to give up that first year.

2:11 PM

I do think Fannin will be the primary back, but I expect Dyer to get a chance for significant playing time.

Eddie ... I agree ... Mario still looks loose carrying the ball.

2:12 PM

I'm with with Jay G. I'm more impressed so far with Teotter than Caudle at this point. Cam will be the man and a day like this that takes away is feet is why some may think otherwise.

Like most folks, I hope Newton can beat out Trotter, et all.

If he does, we got something special.

If he doesn't, we aren't in trouble and the offense will still be much better than last year.

2:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Trotter has made some great throws and is more impressive than I was expecting, but so far, I give Caudle the nod. I must admit, I keep waiting to see Caudle make a bonehead throw.

I think this may be why we don't have a starter named. I don't think Newton is throwing the ball good enough.

2:29 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Newton just needs to learn the offense better. He will do that. Not bad for only 13 practices so far IMO.

2:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I hope you are correct, Eddie. I am a bit disappointed in what we have seen from him. Trotter and Caudle have both been better than expected.

2:32 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The lack of blitzing by the defense could be a major factor in how the QBs are doing. I think they are getting a lot more time to throw than they would normally have.

It looks like my biggest worry over the summer is going to be the defense.

Positives:

1. The offense looks smooth.
2. Wide receivers look sporty.
3. QBs in good shape.
4. Hot Carter looked good.

Negatives:
1. Defense still questionable.
2. Need a consistent playmaker at RB.

Projected QB race:

1. Newton
2. Caudle (based on experience only)
3. Trotter

3:06 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

Kodi did Michael. He came out of no where.

3:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I'm not crazy about the larger logo.

How I perceived the QBs is much different after watching that. Before I had it like this.

1) Newton
2) Caudle
3) Moseley
4) Trotter.

From what I saw today it is

1) Caudle
2) Trotter
3) Newton
4) Moseley

How is that for saying I have no clue?

3:07 PM

I got to admit this game did nothing to settle the QB picture for me. Whle Caudle looked the best, I cannot get over him being interception prone. I remember one game this last season where he threw the INT on his first pass. While Caudle looked the best to me today, he could be a ticking INT bomb.

3:15 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Freep - if you are, so am I.

If Newton doesn't progress enough, Trotter seems like the best option. I'll look again tomorrow at teh film, but trotter seems to have a better arm, good presence/awareness and more mobile/shifty than Caudle.

I still think that it will be the Fall before we have a starter.

3:19 PM

OK, I have the picture Jay took today of Mario's helmet, and a picture from auburn.edu of the "old" helmet for comparison. Firing up Photoshop now to compare logo sizes. You know, because this is IMPORTANT.

3:27 PM
Blogger Secondaid said...

OK, you make the call. I think it's wider, not necessarily taller. Perspective might be a little off. The reference pic comes straight from auburn.edu, so it should be accurate. I tried to size/rotate it to match the picture as best I could. http://yfrog.com/1gyoumakethecallj

3:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK ...looked at the photoshop, thanks Secondaid.

The helmet shape is different, which changes make the emblem look larger.

4:00 PM
Blogger Secondaid said...

I honestly don't know if I've proved anything or not. The superposition seems to show it's a bit bigger, but that's from a bit different perspective and the scaling might be off. That's also two different helmet brands, so there might be a difference there as well.

They might well have gone to slightly larger logos. It'd make them a bit more legible on TV, and we've seen a common theme lately of being more and more TV (and therefore recruit)-friendly.

4:02 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

The "Fill" inside the A & U seem thicker - that is what I see in those pic's.

4:04 PM
Blogger Secondaid said...

The person to ask about this isn't a coach- it's the equipment manager. He's the guy in charge of this sort of thing, and you bet he'll know exactly what size the logos are and how they're to be placed.

overall, i like what i saw for what it was. vanilla offense against vanilla defense. i'm not too worried unless we sustain three season ending injuries at qb before the start of the season. i think it is going to be tough to determine who gives AU the "best chance to win". it is just hard to deny newton's physical prowess over the others.

Hey FSJ - I don't know if you answered my iPad question before and I'm too lazy to search so...

Do you know if and when iPad will have video chat capability?

Back from Auburn. That was a picture perfect day. The atmosphere was unlike any spring game ever and the attendance was AUsome. Tons of very HOT coeds in their sun dresses.

The new arena is everything + some of what it was billed to be. It was small but I think that is what Auburn needs. I haven't been to many arenas but I can't imaging there being too many that are sweeter than that. I can't wait to watch the BB team start the winning tradition that us fans deserve.

It was just spring ball so no need to worry. I'm not worried about the D at all. The D had to be vanilla and so did the O, but I think it gives the O and advantage. I agree with everyone that the WR's look great. There are a ton of playmakers to choice from. The run game will be fine. Trooper Taylor is crazy. As far as the QB's are concerned I think we are in good shape. I think Caudle, Newton and Trotter can all run the offense. They can all move better than Todd. Caudle can run better than most give him credit for. Newton has all the tools and I think a few more months in the playbook will help him a ton. Overall it was great to be in Auburn and I think we are in for an amazing run. The recruits know it!!

P.S.P.F. Mike&Ed's was pretty darn good.

Either our helmets have gotten smaller, or the logo has gotten bigger this year.

Just got back a few minutes ago from A-Day. I think they kept Cam bottled up a little. He never had a designed run play, Trotter and Caudle did. IMO Trotter and Moseley looked the best today, mostly Trotter.I thought Caudle was good also. I agree with other assesments that we have mucho wide receiver depth, TZach was the man today. I think defense will be fine, d-line got a lot of upfield pressure. Great day overall, loved seeing the all-decade team. All the current NFL guys being there had to impress the recruits.

Habs just might have given the game away those last 2 minutes of 2nd period giving up that goal then giving #8 a power play opportunity when 3rd period starts. Caps are a huge 3rd period scoring team... wish I could put my finger on those stats.

Aubie,

The logo on the helmet and the logo at midfield looked larger to me than last year in the pics I've found online.

We can call it a spring game, but this was practice. Newton was not asked to do much. I think AU is keeping him under wraps for now. Fans don't like it, but we don't coach either.

Newton, Trotter, Caudle, Moseley. Not sure why Moseley did not play in the rotation in the first half. I will get back with you on that.

Fun day out in the sun today.

Defense is still bad at getting into position for tackles. Work in progress is the phrase I kept hearing in my head.

WRs (the main 5-6 guys) played with spirit and gusto today. That was nice.

RBs weren't awful - they weren't a big part of what was going on out there in my opinion.

Barrett Trotter looked the best from what I saw but I've been led to not put a lot of stock in today's performance by people here and I will remain cautious in assessment of the QB race. Newton had some zip on the ball but it sails a lot too. Mosley did okay for what he was asked to do (run out the clock). Caudle had flashes - kind of becoming a theme with him but again not sure how much it matters.

Kicking game - PAT/FGs by Byrum are fine. Kickoffs looked problematic (as in we really need someone to sail it through the endzone). Punting was very inconsistent.

Crowd was a great showing and nice surprise. Arena looks awesome.

Auburn people (with a few notable exceptions - who mostly don't show up to events but talk trash on the Interwebs) are always nice and fun to be around.

Anyways those were my thoughts.

Be well.

No run game today. I thought it was just an elevated passing scrimmage today. I thought the #1 D did well. Thorpe was not out there. Drew Cole seemed to play well. On T-Zach's TD, Ikeem Means went over to get in on the tackle and watched as TZach broke away from the two defenders that had him wrapped up.

You saw today why Shoemaker went from 1st team All SEC 2 years ago to being beat out by a kid from the frat house soccer league last year. one good punt. Look like the kid from Kansas has a great shot at grabbing the punter's spot.

What do you think his problem is? Motivation? We've seen that he can punt as well as anyone (and even cosistently for a while). I don't get it.

In case you were wondering, The Colorado Rockies have never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter. That's about to change tonight thanks to the Braves.

PF-I would guess a head case. Punters usually have something else going on in their head. He had very little pressure from the D and he just wiffed on a couple of them.

My final thoughts on the game today:

The QB battle was for 2nd today. #1 has been decided, and that was several practices ago. Like 14.

Everything was just noise for the fans. How many carries did Fannin have. Few. How about OMc. A few. Many passes by everyone else.

I was impressed by Brandon Moseley. He played very well today. I thought Jessel Curry did well on the 2nd D. A Carter will be tough this fall. I think he will shine. WR's blocking down field looked very good.
