The A-Day Game
Hey everyone. Here we go.
BLUE FIRST POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
8 plays, 24 yards, PUNT
FIRST WHITE POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
6 plays, 25 yards, PUNT ... Newton connected on his only throw for a 15-yard gain to Darvin Adams.
BLUE SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
TOUCHDOWN. Trotter 50 pass to Nathan Taylor (walk-on), beating Blake Poole (walk-on) deep. 6 plays, 80 yards.
WHITE SECOND POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Mario Fannin 2 run. 11 plays, 70 yards. Caudle was 6-for-6 on that drive, but the passes weren't challenging.
BLUE THIRD POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
MISSED FIELD GOAL. Chandler Brooks miss 22 FG. 5 plays, 65 yards. Newton was 2-for-4 for 64 yards. He completed a deep pass to Q. Carr for 61 yards, but the pass was far from perfect. It was a duck. Coverage was terrible.
WHITE THIRD POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
TOUCHDOWN. Trotter 44 pass to Terrell Zachery. 3 plays, 80 yards. Zachery took a simple screen pass and made it special. Kodi Burns made a great block just beyond the line-of-scrimmage and Zachery shed a few defenders for a long touchdown play.
BLUE FOURTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle
TOUCHDOWN. Caudle 70 pass to Q. Carr. 1 play, 70 yards. It was a screen that went awry when the cornerback over-pursued in a very bad way. Carr was fast enough to pull away from the walk-on defenders charged with pursuing him.
WHITE FOURTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Cam Newton
PUNT. Nothing going on.
BLUE FIFTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
PUNT. Nothing going on.
WHITE FIFTH POSSESSION
Quarterback: Neil Caudle

Quarterback: Barrett Trotter
HALF ENDS.
------CHANGE IN FORMAT-------
FIRST POSSESSION
Quarterback: Clint Moseley
FIELD GOAL. Wes Byrum 50 FG. Moseley hit Jay Wisner with a deep pass early in the drive. His performance was otherwise unremarkable.

Neil Caudle started.
Game Day Substance
Day Late - Dollar short,,,,,
Caudle looks sharp.
Big smile on Cam's face after the applause.
Why does the field look funny?
We love Cam!
Who is this "coach" talking?
I'm guessing Parkey will be handling kickoffs come September.
Tom Luginbill the "recruiting analyst" is running his mouth the most. Mike Belloti is the coach who can't get a word in edgewise.
Belloti - never heard of him.... Where did he coach?
Some school out west.
oregon
then became AD there, I think.
now trying out the ESPN gig
Davis Hooper substance!
Oregon. Field is 'cross cut' gives me a headache.
nice throw & catch!
Nice Throw
Derek Winter!
Nice pass Trotter.
what's a Nathan Taylor?
Nice look-off on that play. Didn't lock in on him
That was an excellent pass, no doubt.
I could use a few more shots of those beautiful Auburn Coeds myself.......
Wow - swapping sides with the QB's - that is unique - I like it.
Trotter threw that pass nicely.
ESPN just said 55-60k attending
Caudle now with the 1s.
lower bowl essentially full, so that's 60,000
What number is our young LB Curry?
they work that little dump-off / bubble screen to death
I'd say the lower bowl is 90-95% full.
Yea! Luginbill leaving the booth!!!
Yellow shoes kid isn't wearing yellow shoes. I feel betrayed.
Now I like this computer broadcast - take off the head phones and I ain't gat'ta listen to the commercials...
Neil would have scored easily on that scramble.
Yo, yo, yo. I've gotten my run in, cut the grass, played with F4*, showered, caught up on all of the posts, sat down just in time for AU to come on the field and now here I'm is. I know you missed me.
The offense looks much more organized/quick than last year.
Don't know how to compare the QBs in the first. Cam didn't throw enough to give us an idea. Trotter had some nice long throws. Caudle had a lot of nice short and mid range passes. Anyone seen Moseley?
Our receiving skills are 300% improved over the Tubs years.
Beth needs to eat a few cheeseburgers and drink some milkshakes
Hoopie, I got to agree with that. I have seen a couple of drops, but over all, it has looked great. Some of Caudle's throws have been a little behind the receiver, but they are snagging them anyway.
Keenan Carpenter apparently just logged on ... the pride of Rutherfordton, North Carolina, the old knuckle-balling 3-point shooter.
Catching a few minutes of the game. Missed Cam the first time around. Hoping to see him soon after Mosley. Crowd is good.
Aycock looked tentative on that run.
Dontae sighting! Is DL watching?
Uh, I believe that was a deep pass.
Nice pass there.
Those number flippers look good.
Didn't have to throw it that hard.
Cam threw off his back foot and underthrew. He can see downfield well.
Two high passes - got to work on that.
terribly ugly kick
Hats bad to miss a chip shot field goal with no rush.
Mosley sighting.........
No Good? Get that out of the way now.
Dangit yellow shoes kid. Gotta do better than that!
PF ....your yellow shoed boy doinked it.
So far Caudle looks like the man.
T Zac has made a living on that play.
Steve- till he goes live and throws it to the other team.
Is something wrong with Mosley???
Fannin finally looks like an AU RB. He's ready to go.
pretty play for Zachery
Eddie, I'm sure you feel like Vinatieri behind that keyboard.
Great play by T-Zac for the TD.
Uh, tackling needs to improve.
Kodi had 2 good blocks on that play.
Yep - Good News/Bad News there. But that was sweet!!!
Trooper went ballistic didn't he?!?!
Hoopie ... your point is dead on ... the WR play is light years ahead ... catching and blocking.
ruh roh
Hoopie, it doesn"t matter that a WR can throw multiple downfield blocks, catch the ball, and motivate his team as a leader, the Hotties have spoken, and he belongs on the bench.
Nice speed by Carr. Good play.
I'm nervous about the defense.
That's a taunting penalty in 2011
No. 8 apparently struggled in Geometry.
Bad defense, but our WR talent is unbelievable with even more coming in this year.
Q Carr has grown up.
Caudle so far looks like the man..... Throws a catchable ball. But with the no contact on QB's, takes a dimension out of the O with the QB run option that is important.
Kickoffs stink right now as far as still being too short. I'm hoping the freshman can boom it.
Guys, don't get too caught up on the Caudle business. He's doing a nice job.
There's a guy who's a playmaker out there that the other three aren't.
His name is Cam Newton.
Didn't expect to see them bring back the onside punt. They must be getting ready for LSU.
Official attendance is 63,000.
2010 Neil Caudle might have started a game or 2 in 2008.
Caudle's passes haven't been challenging, though. At all.
Once again, is something wrong with Mosley?
Vincent "Bo" Jackson
CEO/Philanthropist/Bad M...
(You shut your mouth1)
I'm just talkin' 'bout Bo.
Jay G's #2 guys is practicing his clipboard skillz.
Has Moseley played?
Cam is definitely has potential. He is not nearly as in tune with the O as Trotter and Caudle.
I'm convinced that we won't see a #1 QB announced until halfway into the fall practice.
So far Newton isn't looking like the man. Granted he could run the ball, but so far, he hasn't done anything to impress. If his ability is running the ball, call him a runningback.
Trotter has looked pretty good too.
QCarr has been a bit surprising to me. Looks like he is good to go.
Moseley may be injured. I read something about a thumb injury somewhere, but it could have just been a rumor.
I'll wager good money that Dyer is not redshifted this season and sees significant playing time.
Trotter has been impressive so far. He has a lot of power on his throws.
Belgian Beasley!!!
Eddie, you are right. At one time in college football, they would consider redshirting a guy like him, but not these days. With kids turning pro early, you don't want to give up that first year.
I do think Fannin will be the primary back, but I expect Dyer to get a chance for significant playing time.
Eddie ... I agree ... Mario still looks loose carrying the ball.
I'm with with Jay G. I'm more impressed so far with Teotter than Caudle at this point. Cam will be the man and a day like this that takes away is feet is why some may think otherwise.
Jet- exactly. He is still prone to fumble a lot with the way he carries it.
Eddie ...
I concur on all counts.
BTW- A-Day on ESPNU is 1,000 times better than CSS.
Fannin has repeatedly failed to move the ball to his outside hand. I can't believe that they haven't corrected that.
BTW- A-Day on ESPNU is 1,000 times better than CSS.
Nevermind, spoke too soon. Live look in at T-Looser takes the good away.
Bad whistle ... that was a throw ... and a heck of a throw at that.
Trotter is looking good. He has hit a lot of longer passes. He has overthrown receivers too. Caudle seems to be throwing more short and mid range stuff.
Asof right now, I think Caudle is last or next to last on the depth chart from what I'm seeing. Trotter looks better, Mosley is a wild card.
Stupid bammers coming to AU A-day wearing their gear.
Don't these ESPN geeks know that the last thing we wanna see is the Tahd.
If your a bama fan and don't have a national tittle shirt, then you must be dirt poor. I saw three racks of shirts today that ha shirts from $3-$5 per shirt. I hate being in bama land.
Like most folks, I hope Newton can beat out Trotter, et all.
If he does, we got something special.
If he doesn't, we aren't in trouble and the offense will still be much better than last year.
Trotter has made some great throws and is more impressive than I was expecting, but so far, I give Caudle the nod. I must admit, I keep waiting to see Caudle make a bonehead throw.
I think this may be why we don't have a starter named. I don't think Newton is throwing the ball good enough.
Newton just needs to learn the offense better. He will do that. Not bad for only 13 practices so far IMO.
I hope you are correct, Eddie. I am a bit disappointed in what we have seen from him. Trotter and Caudle have both been better than expected.
The lack of blitzing by the defense could be a major factor in how the QBs are doing. I think they are getting a lot more time to throw than they would normally have.
It looks like my biggest worry over the summer is going to be the defense.
Anthony Gulley Morgan took better angles when he was Anthony Gulley.
Just sayin'.
Anyone else believe the helmet stickers are bigger. I'm pretty sure they are. Looks a little weird.
I think your right Eddie - thanks for punting that out.
Mosley Sighting.....
Eddie: I think you're right. I took a pic of Mario Fannin's helmet down on the field and I was astounded by how big the AU was.
Nice play by Mosley. Great fake.
Jay G- you need to find a old photo and put it side by side with the new one. They look very noticible on tv. Chin straps overlap most of the emblems. Not sure I like that change.
Helmet stickers are taking PEDs.
There's nothing I hate worse than seeing young, promising helmet stickers all juiced up.
Well, there are a couple of things I actually hate worse but it ranks right up there.
AYCOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's RAWKS!
Eddie: I posted a pic for you.
I'm headed down. No more bloggin' for now.
Thanks Jay G.
Did they say Dismukes is at the game?
Wait, didn't the blue team just score?
Didn't know football could be 'make 'em, take 'em'.
Steve- he is.
AU 8 Vandy 0 in the 3rd inning. Hopefully Corey Luckie is back to his old self.
Thanks JGT - After seeing that pic, I vote to go back to the old style.
Freep ... 2nd half is all O vs. D.
And that will do it. Another A-Day done with.
So I missed the whole game. Who won the QB deathmatch?
I look forward to the assessment JGT.
Positives:
1. The offense looks smooth.
2. Wide receivers look sporty.
3. QBs in good shape.
4. Hot Carter looked good.
Negatives:
1. Defense still questionable.
2. Need a consistent playmaker at RB.
Projected QB race:
1. Newton
2. Caudle (based on experience only)
3. Trotter
Kodi did Michael. He came out of no where.
I'm not crazy about the larger logo.
How I perceived the QBs is much different after watching that. Before I had it like this.
1) Newton
2) Caudle
3) Moseley
4) Trotter.
From what I saw today it is
1) Caudle
2) Trotter
3) Newton
4) Moseley
How is that for saying I have no clue?
Gosh - after seeing the whole game it is almost a dead heat between the 3 who saw the most snaps. Mosley looked good in his limited action.
Yoda?
Am I missing something?
I got to admit this game did nothing to settle the QB picture for me. Whle Caudle looked the best, I cannot get over him being interception prone. I remember one game this last season where he threw the INT on his first pass. While Caudle looked the best to me today, he could be a ticking INT bomb.
Freep - if you are, so am I.
If Newton doesn't progress enough, Trotter seems like the best option. I'll look again tomorrow at teh film, but trotter seems to have a better arm, good presence/awareness and more mobile/shifty than Caudle.
I still think that it will be the Fall before we have a starter.
OK, I have the picture Jay took today of Mario's helmet, and a picture from auburn.edu of the "old" helmet for comparison. Firing up Photoshop now to compare logo sizes. You know, because this is IMPORTANT.
OK, you make the call. I think it's wider, not necessarily taller. Perspective might be a little off. The reference pic comes straight from auburn.edu, so it should be accurate. I tried to size/rotate it to match the picture as best I could. http://yfrog.com/1gyoumakethecallj
Nicely done, second.
Based on that pic alone, I'd say my mind is playing tricks on me. They're the same.
The emblem seemed wider to me also. I don't like the new shape.
Again, this helmet sticker issue- we have to get to the bottom of this. See what you think: http://yfrog.com/bgyoumakethecall2j
OK ...looked at the photoshop, thanks Secondaid.
The helmet shape is different, which changes make the emblem look larger.
I honestly don't know if I've proved anything or not. The superposition seems to show it's a bit bigger, but that's from a bit different perspective and the scaling might be off. That's also two different helmet brands, so there might be a difference there as well.
They might well have gone to slightly larger logos. It'd make them a bit more legible on TV, and we've seen a common theme lately of being more and more TV (and therefore recruit)-friendly.
The "Fill" inside the A & U seem thicker - that is what I see in those pic's.
The person to ask about this isn't a coach- it's the equipment manager. He's the guy in charge of this sort of thing, and you bet he'll know exactly what size the logos are and how they're to be placed.
I missed some of Bruins/Sabres due to more important matters this afternoon. However, I'm sure many of you are just as excited as I am about the hockey doubleheader tonight on Versus! T-minus 110 minutes til the puck drops!
OK, last one. This is DeAngelo Benton from homecoming last year, compared with Mario at A-Day. I think there's a difference here.

With that, I shall turn Photoshop Detective Mode™ off.
Wish we'd have had one more look at Cam before the game ended.
Cory Luckie just pitched a 2 run complete game win for AU. AU 12-Vu 2.
That last shot shows the difference well. I like the smaller logo, but if we need it supersized for TV, so be it.
The new emblem looks fat. The old emblem looks lean and mean.
Nice detective work second. Current version just appears wider to me, the height seems the same.
don't be messin' with uni's.
overall, i like what i saw for what it was. vanilla offense against vanilla defense. i'm not too worried unless we sustain three season ending injuries at qb before the start of the season. i think it is going to be tough to determine who gives AU the "best chance to win". it is just hard to deny newton's physical prowess over the others.
An FYI for the coaches. If back in the early 90s I had heard that head coach Terry Bowden had become the first coach to be fired for messing with the uniforms, I wouldn't have had a problem with it.
Man, I'm super stoked about Luckie's game. He struggled so much lately. Glad to see him keep work through it and find his mojo.
One of the other surprises was some of the receivers that got attention, especially Wisner. Carr, and Spry. Benton and Blake weren't mentioned often. Zachery and Adams did their thing and disappeared.
Cory Luckie! Where did that come from?
A big baseball win and the spring game complete, good day.
Hard to judge a football game when you played against yourself and at times didn't have your best self out there defending yourself.

Back home after a long day. Missed the A day game as expected but enjoyed reading about it on the HABOTN. I will watch it this week on CSS probably more than once. Go Auburn baseball team great pitching Lucky. Great hitting Flecher and all the rest.
I had so much fun today. Got to meet lots of players in my quest to work on my autograph collection.
Digger, the archive should be available already on ESPN3.com if you can't wait...
I don't know why I always get so excited about the A-Day game. It is less revealing than a regular practice (not that we know anything about that anymore), and I always get bored with it by the end of the first half. Oh,well.
Checking in from chicago...,actually watched the Outback Bowl last night so I could get my dose of football! Even though I knew how it was going to end it was still painful.
thanks to Habotn for keeping me filled out while away!! Happy for baseball, too!
Can I rewatch tonight on cable anywhere?
Passed Northwestern on the bus and wondered where do they play football?
Thanks PF I may take a peek. It sounds like the defense needs a whole lot more work on tackling. I hope Roof gets that straightened out before the first kckoff in the fall.
answer for War Eagle Girl
THT that is a nice looking stadium. Way too many seats for there normal crowd.
thanks THT! guess I've got to get off the public computer for now! War Eagle!
Great day in T-town. Big crowd.
Naturally I missed all the fireworks at the end.
Hey FSJ - I don't know if you answered my iPad question before and I'm too lazy to search so...
Do you know if and when iPad will have video chat capability?
Back from Auburn. That was a picture perfect day. The atmosphere was unlike any spring game ever and the attendance was AUsome. Tons of very HOT coeds in their sun dresses.
The new arena is everything + some of what it was billed to be. It was small but I think that is what Auburn needs. I haven't been to many arenas but I can't imaging there being too many that are sweeter than that. I can't wait to watch the BB team start the winning tradition that us fans deserve.
It was just spring ball so no need to worry. I'm not worried about the D at all. The D had to be vanilla and so did the O, but I think it gives the O and advantage. I agree with everyone that the WR's look great. There are a ton of playmakers to choice from. The run game will be fine. Trooper Taylor is crazy. As far as the QB's are concerned I think we are in good shape. I think Caudle, Newton and Trotter can all run the offense. They can all move better than Todd. Caudle can run better than most give him credit for. Newton has all the tools and I think a few more months in the playbook will help him a ton. Overall it was great to be in Auburn and I think we are in for an amazing run. The recruits know it!!
P.S.P.F. Mike&Ed's was pretty darn good.
FSJ, fireworks???? Did FDR finally nuke Turdistan?
Either our helmets have gotten smaller, or the logo has gotten bigger this year.
Good deal, Ch=b
Just got back a few minutes ago from A-Day. I think they kept Cam bottled up a little. He never had a designed run play, Trotter and Caudle did. IMO Trotter and Moseley looked the best today, mostly Trotter.I thought Caudle was good also. I agree with other assesments that we have mucho wide receiver depth, TZach was the man today. I think defense will be fine, d-line got a lot of upfield pressure. Great day overall, loved seeing the all-decade team. All the current NFL guys being there had to impress the recruits.
Habs just might have given the game away those last 2 minutes of 2nd period giving up that goal then giving #8 a power play opportunity when 3rd period starts. Caps are a huge 3rd period scoring team... wish I could put my finger on those stats.
Aubie,
The logo on the helmet and the logo at midfield looked larger to me than last year in the pics I've found online.
Went to game. Check
Came home to finish mowing yard. check
We can call it a spring game, but this was practice. Newton was not asked to do much. I think AU is keeping him under wraps for now. Fans don't like it, but we don't coach either.
Newton, Trotter, Caudle, Moseley. Not sure why Moseley did not play in the rotation in the first half. I will get back with you on that.
Fun day out in the sun today.
Defense is still bad at getting into position for tackles. Work in progress is the phrase I kept hearing in my head.
WRs (the main 5-6 guys) played with spirit and gusto today. That was nice.
RBs weren't awful - they weren't a big part of what was going on out there in my opinion.
Barrett Trotter looked the best from what I saw but I've been led to not put a lot of stock in today's performance by people here and I will remain cautious in assessment of the QB race. Newton had some zip on the ball but it sails a lot too. Mosley did okay for what he was asked to do (run out the clock). Caudle had flashes - kind of becoming a theme with him but again not sure how much it matters.
Kicking game - PAT/FGs by Byrum are fine. Kickoffs looked problematic (as in we really need someone to sail it through the endzone). Punting was very inconsistent.
Crowd was a great showing and nice surprise. Arena looks awesome.
Auburn people (with a few notable exceptions - who mostly don't show up to events but talk trash on the Interwebs) are always nice and fun to be around.
Anyways those were my thoughts.
Be well.
No run game today. I thought it was just an elevated passing scrimmage today. I thought the #1 D did well. Thorpe was not out there. Drew Cole seemed to play well. On T-Zach's TD, Ikeem Means went over to get in on the tackle and watched as TZach broke away from the two defenders that had him wrapped up.
You saw today why Shoemaker went from 1st team All SEC 2 years ago to being beat out by a kid from the frat house soccer league last year. one good punt. Look like the kid from Kansas has a great shot at grabbing the punter's spot.
What do you think his problem is? Motivation? We've seen that he can punt as well as anyone (and even cosistently for a while). I don't get it.
WTC - I agree with you on ole Shoe. Not sure what happened there though. Had a lot of promise.
In case you were wondering, The Colorado Rockies have never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter. That's about to change tonight thanks to the Braves.
PF-I would guess a head case. Punters usually have something else going on in their head. He had very little pressure from the D and he just wiffed on a couple of them.
That one that went straight up in the air...eyes roll
Habs & Caps heading to overtime tied at 5. Habs blew 4-1 and very late 5-4 leads.
My final thoughts on the game today:
The QB battle was for 2nd today. #1 has been decided, and that was several practices ago. Like 14.
Everything was just noise for the fans. How many carries did Fannin have. Few. How about OMc. A few. Many passes by everyone else.
I was impressed by Brandon Moseley. He played very well today. I thought Jessel Curry did well on the 2nd D. A Carter will be tough this fall. I think he will shine. WR's blocking down field looked very good.
What is an Ubaldo Jiminez?
One other thing....UA is in dire need of a punter.
I understand one is coming in this fall though..but good grief.
PF - a dude that can still bring the heat after 120+.
Yeah, we didn't watch the Bama spring game, so we have no idea what you're talking about, FSJ.
Hmmm, apparently the NBA playoffs have started. Who knew?

I saw highlights of Julio dropping a couple.
And of Alabama running the ball a lot.
