Gene Chizik and Cam Newton speak

Hey everyone. The head coach and your new No. 1 quarterback stopped by to speak with the HABOTN (and several others) this morning.

Here are the highlights:
  • Newton on how he found out: ``I didn't know they were going to announce it when they announce it. I was working out and Rick came down and got me and said, 'Go meet with Coach Chizik and coach Malzahn.' My first thought was I ain't did nothing wrong. So I was kind of nervous at first. When they told me, I just wanted to scream. I had to keep my composure."

  • Newton on the emotions he felt at that moment: ``Words can't even imagine how I felt. I felt jittery. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know if he wanted me to say something or just wanted to see my reaction on my face. I wanted to smile, but I didn't want to smile because he'd probably thought I was just joking around. But I was happy inside. I was full of joy."

  • Chizik on how Newton's has responded since arriving in January: ``One of the things that I've really liked since Cameron has been here is he's come in here, he's not talked a lot, he's not told everyone what he's going to do. He's just come in here and basically closed his mouth and went to work. He's worked really hard. He took very hard coaching. We were very demanding and very specific on what we were asking him to do."

  • Chizik on why they just named a starter ... after watching these guys for a month: ``We tried to just go through spring and stay very open-minded about giving everybody their shot. I think as spring unfolds, you can see in scrimmages and some things that are kind of things you can't coach -- the leadership things."

  • Chizik said it's his understanding that Tyrik Rollison will not be back. That's the first time Chizik ever has said anything even semi-official about the Texas Twister.

  3. Reading Cam's comments reminds me that when you get down to it, these are little boys playing a game. How fun! I love his excitement.

  4. He thought he was being called into the principal's office. That's funny.

  5. Cincy - agreed. I like it.

Homer - thanks for finally putting the other to rest and confirming what we expected.

  6. I agree with Norm's agreement of Cincy's comments.

  7. Yeah, great substance JayG.

  8. So this sort of begs the question...does Trotter or Caudle leave?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Why would Caudle leave now?

He's almost five years in. No need. Trotter or Moseley? Yeah. Surely that idea has crossed their minds.

  10. PF got me all excited about some HATE so i'm taking in a podcast. GET SOME PF!

  11. Why would Nick Stephens, a fourth year junior, leave UT?

Um...to play football. I guess Caudle could do the same. How are his academics? If he's done, he could always do a Tim Hawthorne.

Just asking. Geez. I wouldn't expect Caudle to leave (or Mosley for that matter). Just wondering what others thought.

  12. E-bro,

Quit complaining, or it will turn physical....ninny.

  13. I think Moseley's made it clear he intends to stay. That could certainly change of course. Personally, I just don't see the point of Caudle leaving at this stage but I'm not in his shoes (heck, for that matter, I'm not even wearing shoes while I sit at my desk).

  14. wasn't Malzahn talking Moseley into staying before spring practice or am i making that up? it makes sense for somebody to leave but say they all stay & Newton plays 2 years. that leaves Moseley with 2 years left & Trotter with 1. i would say Trotter leaves before Moseley if i had to guess.

  15. Norm, i have to admit that when i got to go onto Pat Dye Field on a-day i went barefoot. it was heaven.

  16. So Eddie, are you following the Rollison Express out of town, or are you going to stick around?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Where does all this QB shuffling leave my #8 on the depth chart Meiko Collier?

    ReplyDelete
  18. PF...I bet you don't know what ignorant means and don't care what apathy means...ninny.

  19. scottieb - if I'm sitting at my desk (office or home), my shoes are off. Shoes are for meetings, walking around, yardwork and certainly for running.

  20. Caudle has a chance this year to show the NFL scouts just how good of a holder he can be. If the Jacksonville Jaguars can draft a punt returner from Colonial Athletic Association stalwart James Madison, somebody could draft a BCS caliber holder.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'll guess everyone stays.

Neil ultimately fades away into the world of holder. Barrett and Clint battle it out for one more year, then one of them considers options after we sign another QB.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I bet I do, E-Bro. Super-ninny.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "My first thought was I ain't did nothing wrong"

Made me lol. Reminds me of when my wife says, "We need to talk."

    ReplyDelete
  24. Neiko Collier, that's a blast from the past.

speaking of holders, i got to meet Sam Rives at a-day. he of 2004 perfect season fame.

  25. Remember, we now have a running quarterback in the SEC. Backup QB is a pretty good job to have.

    ReplyDelete
  26. MJT - even reading it, you sent shivers down my spine. "We need to talk" are the worst words known to man.

  27. HD video expected to be available by 11 a.m. CDT.

  28. I wasn't trying to crawl on your back, E-Bro. I'm just saying that Caudle is not expected to leave. He's in his role.

    ReplyDelete
  29. MEIKO! He's better than No. 22.

  30. In the Jet Wife-to-English translation book:

"We need to talk" translates to: "You need to shut up, listen to me, and do what I say, unless you have a desire to have your you know what tossed out the window of a moving car after I've done a Bobbittectomy on you."

he's a good guy. he's playing with the Oakland A's now if yall didn't know.

    ReplyDelete
  36. JG, are you actually going to be able to get a word in today?

  42. wake...
    no it wasn't

  43. Like many of you, I am very pleased with how Cam has handled the QB battle. It sounds like he has stayed humble, which is important. I like that much better than the Greg Smith approach.

As for Caudle, I hope he gets the backup roll, but I doubt he would leave, anyways.

And maybe one of these QBs wants to take the Kodi Burns route and switch to a new position.

I don't underestimate Jay's impressions of Moseley, so Trotter would be the guy to move. Welcome to safety, Mr. Trotter. That, along with your first team hair, status should keep you happy.

  44. Someone needs to hook Cam up with Carlos Rogers so someone can teach him how to talk to press. Sometimes these can guys can come off so uneducated.
