Practice report, 4/5

Hey everyone. Auburn held its eighth spring practice today, which means we're now past the half-way point. How about that?

Here's what we learned today:
  • QB Neil Caudle (right) said Cam Newton and Barrett Trotter took more than their fair share of snaps today. I still stand by my assertion that Clint Moseley will be the No. 2 quarterback.

  • Chizik said no decisions have been made at quarterback. Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said last week that he's hoping to create a hierarchy soon.

  • Gene Chizik offered so additional insight into WR Philip Pierre-Louis' injury. We know he was carted off the field during the Saturday scrimmage. We know, based on PPL's tweets, that the knee still is swollen and he'll be getting scans today.

  • Chizik offered plenty of praise for walk-on S Ikeem Means, who played mostly on special teams last season as a true freshman. Assistant coach Tommy Thigpen had good things to say about Means last week as well. Sounds like Auburn has its next Adlai Trone.

  • OL Bart Eddins is expected to miss the rest of spring drills with a knee injury, though he'll likely return in time for two-a-days. This is true despite Chizik's assertion Friday that everything is fine with Eddins.

  • P Ryan Shoemaker has been kicking quite well lately. Assistant coach Jay Boulware (left) postulated that the arrival of signee Steven Clark this summer, a highly regarded prep punter, may be behind Shoemaker's surprising and dramatic improvement.

  • Assistant coach Jeff Grimes didn't offer much into the competition at right tackle, where newcomers Roszell Gayden and Brandon Mosley are competing. The loser of that battle will serve in a reserve role there and behind Lee Ziemba.

  • Grimes said walk-on G Jorell Bostrom, who is popular with some HOTTIES, will miss the rest of spring ball because of an arm/shoulder injury.

  • Grimes (right) said he's been impressed with the play sophomore John Sullen has been exhibiting at left guard.

  • Grimes on the chasm between Lee Ziemba now and where he could be: ``The difference between being a very good offensive lineman and being a great one, a lot of times, is ... the small technical details. He's a lot further along this year than he was at this point year. One thing that'll certainly will help him and all the guys who are coming back is being in the same offense for another year. He'll be in a position where he has more consistency around him."

  • QB Cam Newton (left) was willing to delve into a discussion about his weaknesses today. He said he doesn't properly sell fakes right now. He also claims to struggle with patience in the pocket. He's supposed to be considering all receivers. Instead, he tends to look at one and either pass or run. That's all he needed at Blinn College. Malzahn is re-working that approach.

  • Newton said he challenged the defense at times with his feet during the Saturday scrimmage. Quarterbacks were off-limits to tacklers, which meant even the scrape of a finger on a jersey constituted a take-down. Newton said he's been jawing with some of his defensive teammates about how they wouldn't have gotten him to the ground.

  • Newton said he's been struggling to throw the ball well without gripping the laces. ``That's a big thing Coach Malzahn has installed into all the quarterbacks. As soon as you catch the ball, throw. That was kind of new to me because all my life I've been taught to feel for the laces, that's where you get the spiral from. Of course it's going to be awkward, but I think I'm getting comfortable throwing without the laces. The receivers complain from time to time how the ball comes out. That's not my job. My job is to get the ball to them."

  1. soooooo JGT..... it's Clint Moseley QB position to loose?

    ReplyDelete
  2. You mean that Moseley will be the backup, not the starter, correct?

    ReplyDelete
  3. the Soothsayer JGT has spoken and been pretty spot on on things like this!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. If Moseley is the starter, things are definitely different than most thought.

    ReplyDelete
  5. clint? really? Fall is way off... I think cam will pull it together by then.. it was ugly to read Mr. Neil had an INT in the scrm.

With the exception of USC Matt I have not been too thrilled about freshman QBs..

    ReplyDelete
  6. It wouldn't upset me if Moseley was the guy. In Gus I trust, but it would be a surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Clint Moseley would be a good choice.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The new ESPN3.com (formerly EPSN360) is pretty sweet. New player with PIP, customizable 4 way-split screen, adjustable quality, and a bunch of other featured. I'm impressed.

  9. I meant to say: I believe Moseley will be the No. 2, not Trotter.

Sounds like Boulware feels that RS has previously been lacking focus/commitment and is only now stepping up. hmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sorry for the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  12. What are the odds of Tyrik Rollison winning the starting job after two weeks of two-a-days? Sound crazy? Remember the Todd!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's going to tough for him to win it from SHSU.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Is Ikeem related to Natrone?

    ReplyDelete
  15. PF, good point, but he ain't gone yet.

    ReplyDelete
  16. the world is right again...

    go cam...

Get healthy PPL .. your fan club awaits news.

  17. There are zero similarities between TR's situation this spring and Todd's last spring. There are zero similarities between Todd's situation and ANY of the QB's this year.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's amazing how time usually proves me right. I told y'all a long time ago that Moseley was a winner. Winners win. That's what they do. I agree that he will be No. 2 and will start in two years.

    R.I.P. Jason Campbell's NFL career.

    2005-2009

    At least you were classy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. PF, don't spoil my unsubstantiated rumors before they have a chance to get rolling.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jason will get a chance to play somewhere else...that RIP should be reserved for Donovan McNabb.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am still thinking Caudle is number 2, but we shall see. Going against the Tate isn't a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wait, TR's shoulder fell off and the transfer thing is just a diversion so that he can have surgery and recover in time for fall practice?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with Sean. There are worse QBs in the league than Jason. He'll get a shot somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anonymous12:45 PM

Name one team that would start Campbell in Sept. 2010.

He may get a chance to hold some clipboards for a while, but I think his starting days are over. I also wouldn't write McNabb off just yet.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The instructions on how to post a link look more difficult than just having you guys copy/paste the address.

I think Campbell can be a winner in the right situation. I agree that McNabb is done.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Buffalo, Arizona, San Francisco, Oakland...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Campbell's days are not over, there have been plenty of starting QB's to get benched and then emerge somewhere else. He won't start this year, but he will at some point in his career. Now whether he will be successful or not is another story altogether.

Not to mention if he stays in Washington this year he will definitely start a game or two, whens the last time Mcnabb made it through a full season.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Now you got the idea, PF.

Actually, I am a bit surprised that we didn't see at least one QB voted off the island today. I was sure Trotter would get the hook.

    ReplyDelete
  30. For anyone that cares if Duke wins tonight then I will win our Bracket if not then I will come in 2and behind ddragon

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous12:53 PM

Buffalo, Oakland - Tire fires of organizations right now. QB is the least of the problems.

Arizona - Don't blow off Derek Anderson in that system with those weapons.

San Francisco - Oddly enough Singletary seems sold on Alex Smith - go figure

    ReplyDelete
  32. I gave up on the bracket challenge a loooong time ago.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous12:55 PM

I wonder if Caudle got less that his fair share of reps because of the INT he threw on Sat?

Several media experts stated that AU would have the QBs narrowed to 2 by the start of today's practice. ..oops

    ReplyDelete
  34. How were Gus' calf muscles today?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I did think that we would see at least one QB eliminated today, or possibly a depth chart.

I am not sure what to read into Trotter and Newton taking the most snaps. If Trotter is the number 2, I would really be surprised. Make Trotter the number 1 and I will switch to predicting professional wrestling matches.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If the Redskins haven't improved their off. line McNabb will be out by game 2 or 3 and Jason will be back in as the starter(punching bag).

    ReplyDelete
  37. McNabbb missed 2 games last year, but had 22 TD's against only 10 int's and a QB rating of 92. I don't think he's done just yet. Plus while he might make a mistake, he's willing to take chances under center that Jason hasn't shown he'll take.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well done Scottie! Very nice.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think the better question is, how many teams would Campbell NOT start on. That list is smaller.

    ReplyDelete
  40. i will hold any clipboard on any sideline for $500k a year...

    the money counts the same..

    ReplyDelete
  41. Looks like Scottie B represented HABOTN well. He deserves a special award, possibly a new title.

I want Duke to win. Not that I'm necessarily a Duke fan, I don't want a 5-seed to win the championship and ignite all the Cinderella worshippers. I just think that protracted playoffs (especially single elimination) allow too much credit for end of the season lucky streaks, this cheapening the regular season.

Just think ....wild card teams have won the World Series and Superbowl. What a joke!

    ReplyDelete
  43. First of all, Jason has been playing for one of the worst franchises in the NFL. Dan Snyder should be grateful for Al Davis.

Jason has never exeperienced continuity or consistency from a playcalling/philosophical perspective. The Redskins offensive line is a Greek tragedy.

Donovan McNabb has had the benefit of a supporting cast a well-run organization. We'll see how he fares in the same circumstances.

    ReplyDelete
  44. If Butler wins, they were simply the best team this year. What's wrong with that?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hoopie, Butler only lost 4 regular season games. Chew on that for a minute.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous1:09 PM

WERK ....You'd probably have to chase Omnica down via Facebook or whatever to get a calf muscle report.

    How's your dad?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I can't believe with all thats gone on in the tourney, I'm actually going to be in the top 10. Crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonymous1:10 PM

    Butler lost to UAB

    ReplyDelete
  49. I want Butler to win. I don't like bigdaddy, oops, I mean Puke ;-)
Plus if I don't have a dog in the fight, I always pull for the underdog.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Should Butler win, it isn't luck. They have beaten good teams. On the other hand, I expect Duke to mop the floor with them.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hoopie,

Monica de-friended me, so I guess I won't get the Gus calf report. Oh well, I'll always have 2009.

Thanks for asking. My dad is doing well, worn out, but doing well considering. However my mother is now in the hospital with an excellerated heart rate and high blood pressure. I spent last night staying at the hospital with her so I'm a zombie today at work.

    When it rains...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous1:14 PM

I'd bet that Butler couldn't win a best of 7 series pro style playoff with 8 teams. They do real good getting psyched for 2 games and resting for 4 days.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Her heart rate was 185 when she was checked into the hospital yesterday with chest pains. Needless to say we were quite scared.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The pros do have a better system for determining a champion. That is certain. You can see what a difference it makes by looking at how many times the team that won the first game in the series didn't win the series.

    ReplyDelete
  55. RK...

Hope your mom gets better soon and I hope that your dad continues to gain strength and improve.

Hope you get some sleep too.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ikeem Means reminds me of a story about Natrone Means, former UNC and San Diego RB.

During a Chargers game, "Natrone Means" was on the screen for a few seconds then it went away. A nonsports friend says, "Well, what does it mean? Aren't they going to tell us?"

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anybody else care less what Tiger has to say?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Me! Me!

    I guarantee I care less.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I care less than zero, if that's possible.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't think it's a travesty that wild card baseball teams win the World Series either, they have to play the best team in a best of 5 series and then play the other winner of a best of 5 in a best of 7, then they have to play the other league champ in best of 7.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I want Tiger to win the Masters.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Duke gets psyched for the same 2 games and 4 days of rest. Is it also a fluke if they win?

    ReplyDelete
  63. No because they're Duke and Duke are supposed to win stuff like this. This is the mindset of most people whose main sport they follow is CFB. Aristocracy rules the day.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I now only have three chances to fulfill an item on my bucket list: watch a shuttle launch from Canaveral. The last three are scheduled for May 14, July 29, and September 16. I've seen two, one from Jacksonville Beach, and one from St. Augustine Beach, but I really want to get close enough to feel it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I've heard that watching a shuttle launch is an amazing experience. It is spectacular to watch even on television.

    ReplyDelete
  66. who is Adlai Trone?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Only Jay G's favorite Auburn player of all time to interview, Jimmy.

    ReplyDelete
  68. If Tiger wins the Masters I will throw up and never watch golf again

    ReplyDelete
  69. Added some notes from Grimes ... and a pic!

I'm getting much better with my camera. I understand metering now.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Trone was a 1999 walk-on who became a starter at FS in 2000 and 01. Great guy.

    ReplyDelete
  71. JGT -thanks for "Practice report, 4/5: Part Deux"

7 games series test the depth of a team and the ability to adjust strategy game by game. Bigger, deeper teams have more ability to do that.

I don't care about Duke and Cinderella is fun to watch. I just don't think it is an accurate representation of a champion

    ReplyDelete
  85. Butler has made up for a comparative lack of talent by playing extremely solid basketball. They play great defense, move the ball well, hit their free throws, and cover all of the fundamentals. I really like watching those kind of teams.

    ReplyDelete
  86. are the NFL playoffs BS too then?

    ReplyDelete
  87. I think the NCAA needs to go to 3 game weekend series in football for the regular season, and 7 games for each round of the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I think the rehab Tiger had to go through was watching endless hours of Rosie O'Donnell. He's a changed man.

    ReplyDelete
  89. The NCAA tourny is not supposed to determine the best team from the season, it's supposed to determine the champion of a tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I think you are confusing champion with best team. They are not necessarily the same thing. Murphy says so.

    ReplyDelete
  91. If Ingram had gotten injured instead of McCoy, who would have won the MNC?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Richardson would have picked up where Ingram left off...

"He's supposed to be considering all receivers. Instead, he tends to look at one and either pass or throw. That's all he needed at Blinn College. Malzahn is re-working that approach."

    That should scare us all.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Pass or throw only? I thought he liked to run.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Anonymous2:35 PM

Cam seems to have some wisdom. Quickest way to correct mistakes starts with admitting them.

Cam's demeanor is almost too self-assured. The younger fans will tend to call that swagger and be impressed. He says the right things, which is more important. If he does the right things, then he will be an Auburn man.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Anonymous2:36 PM

I think that's what was meant, PF. I was referring to the progression issues.

Kodi had those too, you know.

    Still does.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Pass or RUN. Yes. My bad.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Video should debut around 3:30 p.m. CST.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Anonymous2:40 PM

Sensi ...according to that article, several other NFL teams want Campbell's services. Contrary to your statement this am, I guess his career isn't over after all.

    Do you ever issue corrections?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Why does RUN have to be screamed like that?

    ReplyDelete
  105. Anonymous2:44 PM

I've reserved my Cam love because the tapes from his Juco days show the tendency to look only at one guy along with sometimes questionable throwing fundamentals.

What I liked about TR's HS film was his solid fundamentals and ..even in HS looking to the 2nd-4th receiver.

    ReplyDelete
  106. C'mon Sensi, you know we like you.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Anonymous2:51 PM

    Nevermind. Not worth the effort.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I hate Jason had to find out that way. You have to treat good people better than that. That just show what kind of cowards are running the skin's

    ReplyDelete
  109. Anonymous2:55 PM

Hoopie, to answer your smart-ass question - yes.

I think Campbell's a nice guy but not NFL starter material. It's my opinion.

Feel free to ignore like you do anything I am right about it. In fact, I'd prefer it that way.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Everyone behind the computer is a world-class scout and must be paid for their services. I mean Hoopie is watching Juco tape and worrying about how Newton will make his reads, epic.

    ReplyDelete
  111. This just in Albert Pujols is still really freaking good.

    ReplyDelete
  112. My phone, clearly smarter than me, just reminded me that the Braves are starting.

    ReplyDelete
  113. We all know I'm Devin Hester sitting back here

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hi Yall. Late to the qB depth chart discussion, but I've been saying for a year, don't count out Trotter. My depth chart, Newton, Trotter, Mosely. Caudle will be holder.. Wouldn't surprise me if they named Trotter/Mosely co #2 to keep either from transferring.

    ReplyDelete
  116. As a side note, Trotter was looking good last spring before tearing up the knee. He has a quick release, and is faster than you think. Pretty mobile QB. He ran a lot in HS.

Also, Trotter has been there longer, has more experience, and has been running this offense both last spring before injury, late last fall and now. Moseley was scout team, didn't run the offense last fall.
