Auburn players in the MLB draft

Hey everyone.

Drafts are unpredictable. That's the only way I can explain how OF Trent Mummey, an excellent center fielder, was selected ahead of 1B Hunter Morris in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft this afternoon.

Mummey went 118th overall to the Baltimore Orioles.

Morris, the SEC's Player of The Year, went 129th overall (fourth round) to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Several more Tigers will be drafted in the coming hours.

COMMENTS FROM MUMMEY:
** This was what he said after being asked about this season: ``After last night, when we lost in front of all those fans, it was really hard to take that Auburn jersey off. We had a lot of expectations this year. We wanted to go out a little further. The great group of guys we had really brought out the Auburn family for baseball. These past couple games were really great. It was really special to be able to experience that before this season ended. We brought back a winning tradition to Auburn.

``If this is my last year at Auburn, it's definitely the way I'd like to have gone out. It was really exciting to experience all the things I did. Coming back from my injury was really tough. At the beginning of the year, you have a lot of expectation for the draft. A week before the season, it was taken away. It was tough. I experienced a little depression there for a little bit. I was a little upset."

** On motivation after missing 28 games: ``I was doing it for the Auburn family. I felt like I had a lot to give to Auburn. Missing 28 games, I felt like I had to give a lot to the team."

COMMENTS FROM MORRIS:
** General comments: ``I had high hopes that it would happen earlier, but I'm in a great situation with a great organization with the Brewers. They had a lot of interest out of high school. I had a lot if conversations with them this year. I knew they were in the mix. It wasn't really a surprise to me that they were the ones who jumped forward and took me there."

** On learning that he'd been drafted: ``I was driving to my apartment. I was on the phone with my dad and we were sitting there with raised eyebrows wondering: What's going on? Then he told me: ``Congratulations." I'm relieved for it to be over with. It's behind us now."

  6. Really hard time getting into blog, too.
Did Josh mess it up? :)

  7. Hunter probably didn't help anything with his performance last night.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I however was not wondering about the other blog. You know why.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have "people" working on the problem.

The two blogs are hosted in different places by different companies. It's basically impossible that they'd both go down like that.

I'll let you know what I learn...

  10. Did the MLB scouts judge Morris based on the last couple of weeks?

    ReplyDelete
  11. OK. You don't like soccer. We get it.

Soccer talk has been all but eliminated here. You're welcome.

  12. Gannett corporate is having a server meltdown of sorts.

Both sites have Gannett stuff on them. So I guess everyone's browsers keep waiting for the Gannett stuff to come through ... and it ain't happenin!

  13. Congratulations to the guys and to the team for an exciting season!

  14. This is the summer. What other sport will be going on? Soccer works as long as it doesn't run into football season.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Homer - it's no secret I don't like soccer. But, I don't really care if it's discussed. Now, talk about soccer while the real football is going on then there's a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm no huge soccer fan, but I do like international competition.

I'm (surprisingly) excited about the World Cup.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have added quotes from MUMS and MORRIS about being drafted today.

    ReplyDelete
  18. so, are they both going? any chance one stays at AU?

    ReplyDelete
  19. well, sounds like Morris is gone fo shizzle.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Morris ... no way. He was SEC Player of the Year. He can't improve on that.

Mummey? It's a remote possibility. My guess is that he gets the money he wants and leaves ... even after missing the season's first half.

  21. What's with the elimination of futbol discussion? I'm not a fan, but I thought this was a pretty open forum.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would rather eat spicy chicken than talk about this soccer thing that was mentioned.

  33. WTC, what do you know about "Buck" Allen?

  41. Tried the spicy CFA at lunch today. It was very good, but I still think I prefer my method of adding hot sauce to the original.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous3:15 PM

I'm travelling around the next 2 days, which means fast food will be on the menu. CFA was already a fav and now you guys have convinced me to go spicy. I too typically put hot sauce on the sammich, so maybe I'll put it on the spicy sammich also. Too much hot sauce is not possible.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Chic Fil A has those handy little packets of Texas Pete. TP has great flavor and I put it on just about everything CFA has to offer.

  44. BEASLEY!!! talk is always acceptable

  47. Yeah.

Beasley will work there, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am loving this expansion talk. It appears Texas has become the prostitute of NCAA football, willing to sell themselves to the highest bidder. Throw the Texas legislature packaging in the other Texas schools into the deal and it becomes even more interesting. Texas should have long ago formed the Texas Conference, with Texas only schools.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It was good while it lasted, Harrison.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The Texas Conference:

    Texas
    A & M
    Tech
    Rice
    Baylor
    TCU
    Houston

    and probably somebody I'm forgetting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. that's right, SMU.

UTEP has always been the ugly stepchild out there.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Should Colorado jump to the Pac10 early, it would make the move of Texas to the Pac10 less likely considering the other schools they would want to bring along.

Texas coming to the SEC seems very unlikely if it meant bringing in A&M, Tech, and Baylor.

    ReplyDelete
  53. There is a pretty good PF that Barbee is trying to get in as a transfer from UTEP. Schools such as Texas and Kentucky also want his services.

    ReplyDelete
  54. PUCK!

Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals
    starts in about 10 minutes
Chicago leads 3-2 and can hoist Lord Stanley's Cup with a win in Philly tonight. I hope the Blackhawks win... Friday night.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Strasburg has been very impressive tonight. He has some nasty pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Is our whole baseball team getting drafted today. We are up to like 9 now?

    ReplyDelete
  57. THT ... the ice will melt before the game starts ... Game 6 is tomorrow night.

    ReplyDelete
  58. yep, Jet, I figured that out at 2005 hours. I guess I'll keep filing papers (I'm only 3 years behind)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Strasburg now up to 11 K's thru 6. He is fun to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Eddie, I was wondering the same thing. Some of our signees have been drafted. Will we have a team next year?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Strasburg sets K record in debut at 12 and still pitching. Wow, just wow. Beat out Tim Hudson for that record.

    ReplyDelete
  62. 14 K's now. 6 in a row. That will be his night. Awesome

    ReplyDelete
  63. Strasburg is no Jon Luke Jacobs.

    Just sayin'.

    ReplyDelete
  64. 87 days 22+ hours til kickoff reminds me of the play at the 4:20 mark of this video

    ReplyDelete
  66. is there a list that shows draftees by school (or future school)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I don't know. I got this info off of Bitter's blog.

  70. couple of things:
No laptop for few days so I am using my iPod now. Of browses faster than the Android Eris 3G.
CHB I will have to look up that kid for you.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Does Eris 3G have Wifi? My Moto Droid 3G is decent speed-wise but when it's on the wifi at home it goes MUCH faster. iPod is really fast too.

    ReplyDelete
  72. what's a good non-smart phone? I'm not paying for internet at home and on my phone.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The eris is a good bit slower than the Droid, and Droid incredible.

In Lakeland at least, my incredible is faster than the 3Gs, that will probably change with the new iphone though.

I really like the Iphone, but the ATT network is a no go for me.

I'm sad Auburn baseball is over, I actually enjoyed following them this year, I wish I would have gone to more games when I was at Auburn.

In other news, the Rays won 9-0 on the back of a 2 Pena HR's (one being a grand slam) and a complete game shut-out from Niemann.

    ReplyDelete
  74. What service do you have Seanzie.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Excuse me, that was aimed at CHB.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm surprised Harper has been so willing to move to RF and get rid of his signature eye black. I thought he would put up more of a fight. Hopefully he'll carry that maturity over to his full career and live up to his potential.

    ReplyDelete
  77. The braves drafted Zach Alvord, an Auburn Baseball Commit in round 18.

I have a question, everyone on here knows I have a braves obsession. Do I root for the Braves to sign him, or do I root for him to come on and go to Auburn??

    ReplyDelete
  78. silly question Stu. AU always takes priority.

    Good night/morning, Hotties.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Good morning, Hotties! Wow, are we going to be able to field a baseball team next year? Isn't it pretty unusual to have that many current and future players drafted?

I love being an Auburn Tiger!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Wake, I have T-mobile.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Cincy,
UGA had a draft like that last year. It did not turn out well for them this year.

    ReplyDelete
  82. FYI-all signees from this past recruiting class should be reporting to AU in 11 days. Most of them will be enrolling in the next mini mester.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Morning Hotties - it's Wednesday, one day closer to Friday but more importantly one day closer to football. When does practice start?

AU has offered Jow Morrow the WR from Miss.
What position is Buck Allen playing?
Add Ray Drew and Kris Frost to the list I gave you earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  87. CHB-I found him. He is listed as 'athlete'. His name has not come up in any conversations I have had with mom. I will ask her soon about him.

    ReplyDelete

The other blog is down again.

    FOOTBALL
So we're good on the 25 kids allowed to enroll then?

    ReplyDelete
  93. wtc - thanks for the confirmation.

Side note - August 5th reminds me of good times. When all the family was still alive and living in or around the Gump, that was a big birthday month for us. We'd typically have a big party at our house. My father, grandfather and an aunt had 8/5 birthdays, two cousins with 8/3, my brother 8/19 and there was someone else in the mix too. Even as screwed up as I eventually came to see my family was, I remember those particular days fairly fondly.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Seanzie-AU will have close to a full class report this year from what I hear. AU had one kid go the JUCO route, a WR named Richardson. Not sure about his status. I read he went to JUCO early because he did nto graduate HS. He had 1 class to get done and then he can resign with AU. I hear he will resign in December. I must admit I do not understand that situation but in an interview that is what he said. So AU had 5 for 2009 and 24 for for 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Tylerson just got his first pay check. He was a little shocked at how much they took out for taxes. They lumped his bonus and 1st week's salary all together and withheld on that sum. Looks like he is making $9000 for 4 day's work so they withheld a boatload of money. Welcome to the real world, honey!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Nebraska to the Big10 on Friday?

    ReplyDelete
  101. WTC, I think we may be recruiting Allen as a RB. See what your mom knows.

I think Morrow is underrated and I hope we get him.

If we land Frost I will be excited.

Richardson is in JUCO and reportedly will be an early enrollee for the class of 2011.

If Richardson is the only "casualty" from this past class then that is huge towards getting our numbers back where they should be. To sign 30 players and only have one not enroll is almost unheard of. It just further shows how good our recruiters are.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I wish ND would go ahead and make up their mind so the chaos can ensue.

    ReplyDelete
  103. ND going to the Big10 might prevent the destruction of the Big12, but somehow I don't think ND is going to make that leap.

I find it interesting that I read where Missouri might make the jump first and now it seems it may be Nebraska. The Big 12 might sustain one hit, but two would likely cause it to fall apart, which is what I am guessing we will see.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I think the Big 12 could go get some up and comers and survive, depending on who all they lose. They could easily add a TCU, Utah, Boise, Houston, SMU etc. Granted none have the prestige of say a Nebraska but they would do alright.

    ReplyDelete
  105. If the Big12 loses Nebraska and Missouri, I would think Texas would want to get out. Once Texas goes, they are done. The Big12 already has issues with the superior teams being in the south. I am sure they could re-align the divisions, but when adding teams to the conference, you are telling the existing teams that these are the guys you are going to play every year. Some may want a weakened schedule, but the big boys wont.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Schools are scrambling like there's a fire drill. I don't understand the need for immediate conference re-alignment. What's the compulsion?

    ReplyDelete
  107. I think it all started with the Big10 wanting Notre Dame along with the Big10 Network and the dollars it is making. The Pac10 is suppose to be negotiating a new TV contract and they want to make their conference more attractive. The SEC appears to like things the way they are, but the idea of the Big10 and Pac10 becoming super conferences leaves the SEC in an awkward position. The teams that join the Big10 or Pac10 aren't likely to leave, so it is an act now or act never situation for the SEC.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Soccer blog is BLOWED UP.

    (Not in a good way.)

    Nine draftees = impressive.

Next year's team = rutt row.

    ReplyDelete
  109. happy Victor Hall Day THT.

    9 draftees? yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I don't know that much about how to draft players, but Brian Fletcher in the 18th round seems silly. He's pretty doggone good.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Looks like some young guys will have a chance to play a lot next season. Not a good formula for immediate success. Hopefully it'll pay off down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Of course, Morris in the 4th seems quite low as well. He looks like Justin Smoak to me.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I think Strasburg might be pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Ehh, beginner's luck.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Old Geezers do not like sudden change.
I too wish Notre Dame would go ahead and join the Big 10+1.
But I would be shocked if they did.
Without that the ball is going to start rolling down hill fast and gain momentum because the money hill is very steep.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Would a new post be considered a "sudden change"?

I am extra full of Bammer hate today. Not sure why, but who needs a reason?

    ReplyDelete
  117. I'm locked and stocked with hate towards Bama every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  118. It is looking like Nebraska to the Big10 is going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  119. this is all about to blow up like the Godfather.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Nebraska is the one who has the biggest incentive to make the move. They would be the ones left out in the cold if OK and Texas et al joined the Pac 10 and Missouri + some big east teams joined Big 10 while they waited.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Since it's been the hot topic here of late, and because I know you're all interested, I actually left my desk today for lunch and had the new CFA Spicy sammich. It was right good indeed. Next time, I think I'll add some hot sauce to it.

    ReplyDelete

  123. yeah, that's what i thought!

    ReplyDelete
  124. The spicy chicken biscuit is really good, too...you'll love it when they start selling it everywhere in 6 months to a year. I add hot sauce to add a little moisture to the biscuit. I'm thinking honey would work, too.

    ReplyDelete

    I'm shocked as well.

    ReplyDelete
  131. do we have odds on ND staying independent or joining Big10+1

    ReplyDelete
  132. Catching up... Fletch in the 18th seems a bit low, until you consider that he doesn't bring much to the table other than a good bat. Average defensively and speed wise and a weak arm for a corner OF. It wouldn't hurt him to come back. Depends on what kind of bonus he is offered.

Of the signees drafted, JUCO pitcher Morris is the one I worry the most about losing. I think we get signee Alvord in school, which would be big.

"Buck" Allen is being recruited as a RB.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I don't remember this many cars sporting Bama decals in Jacksonvville when I lived here before....Also had an interesting encounter with a bammer in a bar lastf riday. She came up to me and asked who my football team is (wtf kind of question is that?). I made her repeat the question while I tried to figure out what the heck she was talking about. When I replied that I went to school at Auburn, she made a face, then started babbling about me dressing like I was from Tuscaloosa. When the hesck did bammers trademark a polo, seersucker shorts, and boat shoes. It pissed me off and I told her to go back over to her cousin boyfriend and leave me alone. She was yelling something about13 (and trying to figure out how to hold up that many fingers) as I walked away.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Norm,

Left myself open? I facilitated and encouraged the thought.

    ReplyDelete
  135. nice PF. "go back to your cousin."

    ReplyDelete
  136. I don't feel good about it, Scottie. I'm usually more of a gentleman to ladies, even that kind, but I was in a strange environment and briefly confused by what was happening, and just blurted out the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  137. PF - just wanted to put that out there so no one thought I was unjustly picking on you. Cause, that ain't me man, that ain't me. Okay, yes it is. I pick on others constantly.

    ReplyDelete
  138. you should always feel good about degrading a knuckle-draggin' bammer.

    every.
    single.
    time.

    HATE....it's good for ya.

    ReplyDelete
  139. It's like a rabid dog.

    Put 'em down.

    ReplyDelete
  140. PF, just being honest here, but if I saw a guy dressed like that and someone put a gun to my head and said "Did he go to Auburn or UAT?", I'm saying "UAT". With that said, if they asked "Auburn grad or UAT fan?", I would have answered "Auburn grad".

    Flagpole after school?

    ReplyDelete
  141. I think if I keep hanging around JGT's WC blog, I'm going to start saying things like "Auburn are going to be good this year".

    ReplyDelete
  142. I feel like saying "al - u - mini - um" after being on the soccer blog, so I choose an al-u-mini-um baseball bat. PF gets a polo mallet.

    ReplyDelete
  143. After battling with Comcast for two weeks (including a very, very lengthy email), I have emerged victorious. My bill for July is currently negative $40, my promo has been extended to 12 months from 6, and I managed to get all of the equipment for a grand total of $1.99/month (my biggest gripe is that equipment rental was going to be between $40 and $60 a month), including an HD DVR. I backed off of some of my demands as a result, but am very happy. Drinks on me.

    ReplyDelete
  144. SC,

I live in freakin' Florida. I wasn't wearing anything out of the ordinary. The problem was that I was in a bar with a mechanical bull and a bammer whale.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Speaking of whales, if you've never seen the Fail Whale, sign in to twitter right now.

    ReplyDelete
  146. searsucker shorts? you bammer

    ReplyDelete
  147. nice work with Comcast, PF.

RE: "She was yelling something about 13 (and trying to figure out how to hold up that many fingers)", you should have suggested she hold up all but one thumb.

    ReplyDelete
  148. PF, whether your clothing was out of the ordinary or not, I don't know. I do know, however, that your treatment of the offending Bammer was completely appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Miller:

Hearing Woodson is waivering. May be grades, may be disagreement with Saban, or may be just that attention has left him and he needs it. I dstill doubt AU gets him but Taylor still on him hard.

Hearing Fanning is not showing up at Auburn High. May sit out a year or transfer to another high school. I think GPA is an issue.
