Live Baseball -- sorta

Alrighty, boys and girls, I'm here for actual baseball. Your Tigers are on the field as I'm typing this. As you know, we can't do a "live blog" of the game -- the NCAA frowns upon such things. I'll recap the innings as best I can for ya.

So, away we go on what is sure to be a fantastic voyage ...

JACKSONVILLE STATE v. AUBURN

JSU Top 1
: SP Cory Luckie struggled a bit, allowing a run on two hits. He also balked runners to second and third and walked 'em loaded. Fortunately for AU, that's where he left 'em. He did throw 36 pitches in the half-inning. JSU 1, AU 0

AU Btm 1:
Considerably less drama. Three to bat, three to sit. JSU starter Austin Lucas threw five pitches.

JSU Top 2: Another inning, another runner in scoring position. No harm this time, however. AU still down a run.

AU Btm 2: Think back to the first. It went like that.

JSU Top 3: Couple of balls to the track, but no harm done. Still one-zip, JSU.

AU Btm 3: Couple of balls to the track. Still no harm done by the Tigers.

JSU Top 4: A walk and double play. As an aside, you know what's stupid? Grown men at a baseball game yelling at "Blue."

AU Btm 4: Hey, offense. Your Tigers have plated three runs, despite one of the most awesomest catches by JSU CF Daniel Adamson that saved a grand slam. New score: AU 3, JSU 1

JSU Top 5:
And back come those pesky Gamecocks. Two-run ... ahem, DONG, and an RBI single put them back on top. Your new score: JSU 4, AU 3

AU Btm 5:
And back come the Tigers. They love pepper and hate cinnamon but also don't mind a lead either. Fradejas hit his second -- ahem -- DONG of the season -- this one a two-runner -- and AU is back on top. AU 5, JSU 4

JSU Top 6:
And back come the Gamecocks. Tied this baby at 5-5.

AU Btm 6:
Mr. Gamache went ahead and Ga-Mashed one. AU 6, JSU 5

JSU Top 7:
Eh.

AU Btm 7: Give the Tigers two more. And Gamache had hit one ball six inches higher and another a foot to the right, he'd have six more RBIs. On the other hand, had JSU's first sub-style pitcher been 12 feet to the left on a couple of pitches, he would've just missed outside. New score: AU 8, JSU 5

JSU Top 8:
And back come the Gamecocks ... just not all the way. Couple of runs scored, a runner left at third. Give these guys credit, they're not going anywhere. New score: AU 8, JSU 7

Brief summary:
Auburn wins, 9-7.

Sorry, had to finish a few notes and get quotes. But hey, it was on TV.

  1. Why are there so many empty seats behind home plate?

    ReplyDelete
  2. good question, Kathy. I had the some bewilderment.

    ReplyDelete
  3. And I'm doing it while recapping ASU nonsense. Find one of your just-as-capable bloggers who's doing that.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Because no one is sitting in those seats.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Spoken like a true bammer!

    ReplyDelete
  6. i wonder if those were the "Favre Entourage" seats for the first game.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Thanks Bags.

It is nice to see we are being efficient with our hitting and not wasting our hitters by letting them swing the bat a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Zac, Q, and Mario are in the house.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I may have to go watch hockey in 20 minutes to try and change AU's Luckie.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Nice work, baggage. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  11. yippee, no runs no hits, one error one left

    heading to bottom of 2nd

    ReplyDelete
  12. Maybe we should try getting people on base. It may sound crazy, but it just could work.

    ReplyDelete
  13. wow, Jax pitcher through a ball... as in a non-strike. That's a first.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, I've learned that we didn't leave our bats in Auburn for the SEC tourney last week. We threw them in Lake Martin on the way to Hoover.

Must have been some sort of memorial ceremony to Pat Dye's pants.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If you get to feeling down at any point tonight, here's an at-least-we're-not-them moment for you: These folks have been athletic directors at ASU: Rob Spivery, Richard Cosby, Sonia Price, Patrick Carter, Ron Dickerson, Monique Holland, Sterling Steward, John Knight and an AD to be named later.

All of them since ... take a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oooohh, a Price is Right opportunity.

    Still gets the out.

    ReplyDelete
  20. We need some base runners!

    ReplyDelete
  21. 2002 would be correct. November of 2002 to be exact.

It's a stable, well managed department.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Scottie B - it ain't that pretty at all. 9 AU batters up, 9 down. :-(
I think I'll hurl myself against the wall

    Or maybe just hurl.

    ReplyDelete

  34. Good catch. Scores 1 run.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think the guy dancing around at 2nd base distracts the hitter more than the opponent.

    ReplyDelete
  36. More runs score.

    ReplyDelete
  37. after 4, it's 3-1 Good Guys

    ReplyDelete
  38. that was a ridiculous statistic. In 59 games, AU has outscored opponents in the 4th inning by 196 runs. Did I hear that right? If so, it's now 199.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow, that didn't last long.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I go to let the dog out, and they hit a 2-run homer :(

  42. Needed that double play. 2 outs

    ReplyDelete
  43. Scottie B -- the Corndogs blew a lead against the Anteaters of Irvine and lost, I think. I accidentally cut off the broadcast and didn't hear the last out.

speaking of blowing leads. Ugghhh. now 3-3 on the 2 run JSU homer.

    ReplyDelete
  44. LSU ties it up!!! Still alive!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. The stat man in the press box says the 196 runs in the fourth inning is incorrect. According to the numbers in the book, AU has scored but 72 runs total in the fourth inning this season.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks, Josh. I may have heard it incorrectly, or Bramblett may have been making stuff up.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Why did he field that? He had no play; he should have waited for it to come to him, hopefully in foul territory.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Bag, thanks for the updates. It's the only way I can follow tonite.

    ReplyDelete
  58. LSU finally pulled it out, Scottie B. 2 run double with 2 out in bottom of 11th.

    Anteaters 10
    Corndogs 11 (11 innings)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Has there been an inning when JSU didn't get a runner on base? This is getting irritating.

    ReplyDelete
  60. SFC - Unless in the 3rd, no.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Scottie B -bottom of the 7th, Good Guys on 2nd & 3rd, no outs.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Runners on 2nd & 3rd, no outs!

    ReplyDelete
  63. that was just out of the strike zone.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Auburn is gonna win.

    You know why?

    Because they're better.

    ReplyDelete
  65. pitching change, Scottie B

the Jax state hurler tossed two balls at least TEN FEET outside, runners couldn't advance because the balls ricocheted off the backstop so fast. After those weird throws, he still got Mummey to ground out sharply to 1st, runners stuck at 2nd & 3rd.

    ReplyDelete
  66. another right arm sidewinder for Jax State.

    Fletcher gets RBI ground out.

    AU 7-5

    Runner on 3rd, two outs.

    ReplyDelete
  67. RUN!!! RBI infield hit

    ReplyDelete
  68. Scottie B- inning over.

    JSU 5
    AU 8 after 7 innings

    ReplyDelete
  69. Corndogs surviving the group of death...Watched a few innings of that game during the Bam rain delay. Have only read about the Eaters this year, but seeing them really showed they are nothing to sneeze over. A VERY solid baseball team that went to the CWS last year I think.

I still think if the Corndogs come out of this group they're repeating and will be placing at least a small wager if they do.

    Bags. Bravo.

Looks like a crazy atmosphere at AU. Packed in and outside of the stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hi hotties... and Josh. Looks like the Tigers are hanging in there so far. Of course if pitchers are throwing 12 feet outside that usually helps.

    ReplyDelete
  78. This game is starting to piss me off. We should have closed the door on them and have failed to do so. Not good.

    ReplyDelete
  79. whew. that was close, Scottie B.

    Tying run left at 3rd

Going to bottom of 8th, AU 8 - 7 JSU

    ReplyDelete
  80. lowcountry...
The demarcation between Bags and the Hotties made me smile.

    ReplyDelete
  81. USCe losing.

I think all other SEC teams won or are winning, though one in particular by the slimmest of margin.

    ReplyDelete
  82. BIG DING DONG from McElroy!!!

    9-7

    ReplyDelete
  83. Maybe the bottom of the 8th will present another door to slam.

    ReplyDelete
  107. John Wooden = America's coach.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Josh went 7 1/2 strong innings.

    ReplyDelete
  109. "Going for a club record 10 game winning streak tonight."

ESPN was saying that earlier, but that's not true. The Braves won 13 in a row to start the 1982 season.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I remember that well, WERK. Played about .500 ball the rest of the season, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  111. USCe roars back to take a 9-3 lead ... SEC in good shape to go perfect on day one.

    ReplyDelete
  112. PUCK

Flyers came within 2 inches of blowing a 3 goal lead in the last 8 minutes.

    Series tied at 2.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I could have sworn Bramblett gave a score of 5-1, Bucknell. Were some runs taken away for bad behavior?

of course, I probably heard that wrong just like I heard the 196 fourth inning run stat.

    ReplyDelete
  114. THT ... I am sorry ... 9-5.

    ReplyDelete
  115. nope, I heard correct. USCe leads 9-5 going in the 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  116. That's ok, Jet. I know you were just checking to see if I was able to pay attention while I was eating my ice cream.

    ReplyDelete
  119. ehyou,

Sportscenter was saying the same thing this morning, and I knew it didn't sound right.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'll be glad when Jurgens gets back and Kawakami can go to the bullpen and leave Medlen in the rotation.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Medlen was superb last night, as well as the last few time I've seen him.

Kawakami hasn't been superb all season.

    ReplyDelete
  122. K.K. seems to have one inning that just kills him. He'll look ok most of the game, but have an inning that he gets drilled. It happened last year as well.

    ReplyDelete
  123. When Cox walks to the mound, there is zero doubt about who is coming in.

I haven't wasted any of it! I've already been for a ride along the Potomac. Beautiful morning but the DC summer humidity is setting in full strength.

    When do we play Clemson?

Why do Dartmouth and Miami get to play their regional on ESPNU while the SEC with their great ESPN contract scores zero? The contract is nice money but not so great for viewers.

    ReplyDelete

answer to first question: 7 pm EDT

answer to 2nd question: I have no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  129. For some outstanding stories about John Wooden, take a look here:

    ReplyDelete
  130. Good Morning Tigers!! Good time last night even though it was so crowded in the terrace it was hard to see. But seeing the extra 1000 or more outside the fence and ALL ALONG each floor of the parking deck was awesome!

Barbee and coaches were there along with some guy named Dye. I didn't see Favre.

Also looks like Moon did a good job and kept from insulting us regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Anonymous9:41 AM

The Yahoo folks think Gus Malzhan will have plenty of opportunities elsewhere in 2011 should Auburn put up points in 2010.

    Discuss.

(Moon - this is your cue to remind us that Saban rulez.)

    ReplyDelete
  132. My wife just asked me who is John Wooden.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Anyone know if the baseball contest vs. Clemson will be on tv today? I have directv

    ReplyDelete
  134. The question is ... where does Gus Mazlahn want to coach?

And if Auburn puts up a lot of points this year, he'll probably get another raise. He could make $1 million a year soon.

For that kind of money, is it worth becoming a head coach? Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Good morning, Hotties! Had a great time at the game last night with Mr. Cincy, WTC and Miller. Although they all kept trying to send me back to the bathroom. :) Everytime I headed down there we scored!

Just got back from an hour long power walk around the campus. It is beautiful! We saw so many things that we don't ordinarily see on football weekends.

    ReplyDelete
  136. My guess is Gus is about to step into the no-man's land of coaching -- too much rep to take a small job he considers iffy, too little experience to get a big job he wants.

    ReplyDelete
  137. So maybe that means he stays here for a few years and gets the experience he needs to get the big job he wants. Win-win for everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I'm pretty content to not spend one second worrying about where Gus will be in 2011 because he hasn't even coached a game yet in the 2010 season. Hasn't even opened up fall camp. Let's wait till we are scoring 40 points a game before worrying about where he'll be in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Anonymous11:16 AM

Dartmouth and Florida International are worthy of ESPNU? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  140. Anonymous11:22 AM

I don't know Gus at all. But from what I've heard of him, I've got to think he wants to try to be "the man" at some point. He'll go when the right job is offered.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Lost my internet 6 PM last night. Mysteriously came back on 10:45 AM this morning. Spent said time working my way through all of the good stuff on HABOTN. Thanks Josh for your contribution and to all others who spoke up and kept things lively. And as usual thanks for great info JGT.

  143. Enjoyed the game last night... Nice to meet Mr & Mrs. Cincy.
It was a bit muggy out, and I think I sweated through 4 layers of clothing... I apologize if any of those layers were yours...

Sorry I didn't liveblog the game here... I did tweetblog it though.

Here are my 5 keys to AU beating Clemson today:
    1) AU pitcher have to throw 1st pitch strikes and work ahead in the count...
    2) The defense has to be sharp. Players have to be thinking ahead and know what to do if the ball is hit to them... and field it cleanly of course.
    3) Eliminate the little league baserunning mistakes. Can't run themselves out of innings on the basepaths.
    4) Hitters have to be patient at the plate, work the count.
    5) Play with Energy and Enthusiasm. I haven't seen AU play with it since the OM series.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Ebro ...

The next thing you'll tell me that it's inappropriate to take 'em three at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I have decided that, based on all the hype... I will be disappointed if we score less than 10 points in any single quarter this season.

    Yeah, there... I said it.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Anonymous12:53 PM

Miller ...I'll bet any amount you want that you'll be disappointed with the 10 point/qtr. expectation. When the time comes, I really hope you don't post that disappointment on here.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Hoopie... please have your sarcasm detection meter serviced... I think it's broken.

    ReplyDelete
  148. JGT....I just downloaded FIFA10 demo... how the heck do you get a shot on goal? every time I shoot it is some wild shot that is nowhere near the goal...

    ReplyDelete
  149. The National Hoopie Service has issued an Invalid Negative Speculation Warning for Miller County until January 2011. This means condtions are ripe for invalid negative speculation.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Something is definitely ripe...It has been confirmed...

    ReplyDelete
  151. I'm in the ATL this weekend. Is tonight's game on the telly anywhere in this neck of the woods???? The net?????

If not I'll just have to depend on the HABOTN to get me through it.

    ReplyDelete
  152. By the way, I thought I read where the NCAA was issuing their findings on USC on Friday... that was yesterday. Did I miss it?

It prolly doesn't really matter...all they will get is a swat on the butt and told that they better be good little boys from now on!

"Dartmouth is about to eliminate FIU which means Garrett Wittles will have to keep his hair growing all through the offseason. He has not cut his hair during his 56 game hitting streak and is two games short of the NCAA Record set by Robin Ventura. Wittles could look like a ZZ Top cover band by next spring."

  156. It's about as dead as an armadillo on the interstate around here...

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  158. NCAA is required to furnish report to the school 48 hours before public release. So question is, did USC get report on Friday? I guess we'll find out Monday when NCAA folks are back in the office. Or maybe as late as Tuesday if the 48 hours=2 "business" days. Or maybe the report still hasn't been delivered to USC.

My guess is we'll hear about USC sanctions before the next iPhone hits the store shelves.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Anonymous3:18 PM

Oops, my fault ...the meter wasn't set to detect "traces".

Jet that warning would have been for: "Unreasonable expectations followed by Anger". Those type storms usually precede the negative speculation storms by a couple of seasons.

Negative speculation storms can suddenly appear if Chiz were to lose favor with those certain aging members of the PTB. It's happened before.

    ReplyDelete

THT ...seems I heard on ESPN radio that the NCAA no longer gives the school the 48 hour notice.

  162. you may have, Hoopie. But ESPN also reported the Braves were vying for a record 10th straight win last night. The team record is 13 straight in 1982.

I had not noticed before that LSU opens at UNC on the evening of Sept 4. That's only 4 miles away and I'd love to see it. However, another game 500 miles away requires my attendance that day.

  164. I have been busy - cleaning bathrooms! First time to give the ones here at the condo a good cleaning since the boys moved out. Need I say more?

I just figured out that with our house and two AU condos, I have 9 bathrooms to clean!! Something has got to give. Hence our meeting with a realtor in about an hour to see about listing the old condo. Last chance to buy without a realtor fee :)

  166. cincy - I'd love to, I really would. But, that just ain't in my cards. Now, if you were to just give it to me, think of the tax write-off you could have.

  167. It's funny, Norm. I have quite a few offers to take it off of my hands for free...

  168. Cincy- give me a $100 and the condo and you'll have an even bigger tax write-off.

  170. I haven't seen F4* since around 1p Saturday last week. Thanks to a myriad of travel delays yesterday, it was almost 9:30 last night before I got home so he was already in bed. So to make up; this morning we played Hot Wheels, went to breakfast at our usual spot with Hot Wife and one of our friends, then he and I goofed off which included going to a church car wash, playing at the park, watching some kids play in a baseball tourny, play in our yard, put up a new rope swing, now we're watching Justice League. Sure, we should probably still be outside down at the pool, but I'm tired and he's pleased with what we're doing. It's a good day.

Hot Wife is happy too since all of the above allowed her to run a number of errands.

  171. If the NCAA has any sense of humor at all, they will hit USC with some of the hardest penalties since SMU got the death penalty. At the same time, ESPN should have a prime time special showing Kiffikin's reaction when he learns the news. Playing Rocky Top in the background wouldn't be bad either.

  172. that's nothing, Norm. I went back to bed after breakfast and have sat around coughing all afternoon.

  173. JSU starter Hunter Rivers faced four batters, got one out and gave up a 3-run homer to USM's Adam Doleac

  174. cincy - I'll double, no, I'll quadruple THT's offer. Then, after we've Closed on the deal, I'll take any of the cincy's in attendance out to dinner.

  175. THT - you should quit chain smoking Camels. I hear that stuff is bad for you.

  177. I would not walk a mile for a Camel. In fact, there are very few things for which I'd walk a mile. AU football being one.
