New member on the way?

Hey everyone. News is breaking at this hour about Texas A&M and its feelings about the Southeastern Conference.

The Houston Chronicle, citing an unnamed source, says school regents are expected to meet this week and discuss a possible jump to the SEC. An offer apparently is on the table.

Houston is the fattest city in America.

Have a nice night.

  1. Made the trip to see the Cotton Bowl loss against TA&M. That was one heck of a long road trip, not my longest, but it was a long one. The trip back was considerably shorter since we pulled in behind two AL State Trooper cars and did 100+ for a couple of hours. Before we had to pull off for gas, there must've been a caravan of 20 other cars from Alabama doing the same thing.

  2. Aside from that, I kind of like the addition. Conference expansion? Who knew? You'd think there'd have been some talk of it before now.

  3. College Station is a ways from Houston. Good luck making the trip to USCe, UF, Kentucky, Tennessee.

  4. Clearly, proximity is not the prevailing thought in any of these expansions. But what do I know? I'm just a nerd on a con-call currently listening to a bunch of other super nerds. I'll let some of our resident experts discuss the relative merits of proximity vs market vs the price of tea in China.

  5. It would be interesting to know what exchanges there have been between Slive and the SEC. Surely Slive has talked with them about how attractive it would be to get the four Big12 schools into the SEC television contract.

It is ironic that we are suppose to hear something about this on Thursday. We are suppose to hear from Texas on Tuesday and Oklahoma on Wednesday. It will be a very interesting week.

  6. As someone who has attended (and graduated from) both Auburn and Texas A&M, I can tell you that the culture at A&M is quite different from anything in the SEC. Very, very "Texas" if you know what I mean. Although A&M is very focused on agriculture and the curriculum is similar, the culture is just different.

And College Station is a loooong way from any SEC schools but LSU and Arkansas. Actually A&M has a long-standing rivalry with LSU and played in the SW conference with Arkansas, so there are those ties.

I'm not sure it's a good fit for the SEC, but bringing in a school with over 40,000 students and a huge alumni base might make financial sense even if the cultures aren't exactly a match.

  7. Morning Hotties.

Just a quick fly by post this morning before I go back into internet blackout after an awesome weekend of Bonnaroo and US-England.

Listened to lots of good music. Had lots of free drinks. Even saw McLovin in VIP yesterday. Such good times.

Enjoy all the World Cup action today.

  8. E-Bro,

So who was the most impressive Bonnaroo act?

Did you check out Michael Franti & Spearhead? They are always a fun show.

  9. Question for you runners - Do you struggle with shin splints? As you know, I have been walking the STEEP hill in my neighborhood for the past 3 weeks or so and my shins are starting to bother me. They aren't terrible, but I don't want them to get that way. I walk 6 days a week about 50 minutes each day and am wearing good Mizuno shoes. Anything else you suggest?

  10. You know, La Tech and Hawaii share a conference. They lack cultural and geographic proximity. They seem to have a heated rivalry where they wish death upon the firstborn of their opposition....

  11. I've driven to College Station from Houston. It's not that bad.

  12. BRING ON THE FATTIES...I MEAN AGGIES.

  13. Cincy-To answer your question: No.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That was to question #1.

#2 is stay off concrete when you exercise. It is not very forgiving. Move to asphalt. if possible move to grass to exercise. both of these substances are more forging than concrete. Otherwise, back off the training a little. Could be a sign your body is telling you that this is too much too fast.

    ReplyDelete
  15. wtc,
Thanks. I am walking on asphalt, but maybe I need to do a couple of days a week on the elliptical indoors.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Do we really expect recruits to migrate en masse the PAC10 or the BIG10 simply because they have 16 teams instead of 12?

I'm far from convinced that expansion is the prudent action.

  17. Jet's early a.m. authoritative declarative statements.

    1. I've always liked "The Aggie War Hymn." Any song that has "Go Tell Aunt Rhody the Old Gray Goose Is Dead" embedded in it can't be all bad. Plus, it's a "War Hymn." In fact, it makes it better than 95 percent of college football fight songs.

    2. Chip's quote ... "Unfortunately, Dothan is also in Dothan" is prizeworthy.

    3. It is hot, and will get hotter.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Is jet qualified to make an A.D.S.?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Why not TA&M? I can think of worse teams to include if we are going to expand and I think we will have to in order to compete with the other big conferences.

    ReplyDelete
  20. yes, Jet can proclaim any **** thing he wants.

    scottie degrees it so.

that is scottie b's early a.m. authoritative declarative statement.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Cincy, I say back off just a bit on your walking routine, maybe try some different routes also. I never take the same route on successive days.

    ReplyDelete
  22. well, it looks like the SEC boys are out drinkin' during the offseason:

ARKY FB Stumon charged with DD.

Florida WR Hammond arrested for DUI.

    ReplyDelete
  23. IV,

The reason I am against A&M is I don't think it adds anything to the SEC. Much the same as I feel about Arkansas, it's just a trip into the southwest that really isn't needed and geographically it doesn't fit in.

I just don't like the expanding west idea. I would have probably voted against the Louisiana Purchase.

    ReplyDelete
  24. A couple of reasons to expand would be to expand TV marketshare (which is the primarary driving force of all this, right?) and increase the competition level for the conference. I'm not entirely sure that A&M does either, much less any of the other teams in the Big 12, ACC, or Big East other than Texas and from what I can tell, Texas is the only one that would do both. But then again I may just be looking at the football/basketball side of things.

    ReplyDelete
  25. These expansion scenarios change quickly. I can't believe every school is letting Texas drive the bus, especially OU. That is just crazy. I have a slight feeling that the Big 12 may actually stay intact.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My A.D.S.:

Who is or isn't in the conference is irrelevant with regards to this fact: there are 82 days til kickoff!

    GO TIGERS!!!
    WARRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm ambivalent on expansion. More money = good. More TV time = good. Traveling to Texas from S.C. != good.

I guess if expansion is happening anyway, I could pick some teams I'd like less than TAMU (in no particular order):
    - University of Idaho
    - Any other school in Texas except for UT
    - Alabama

And my mother-in-law's family is from SE Texas, so maybe it'll give us an excuse to go visit.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Talked to a local A&M friend this a&m, so to speak.

He said he'd love to be in the SEC -- money, exposure nationally for the program and more opportunities for him to see his team personally and on TV.

Says Texas has a perpetual yeast infection that would prevent it from being in the SEC.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree, Lowcountry. The Vandals are a bunch of sissies; they play indoors.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Texas now reportedly will stick with the Big 12...this will throw one huge monkey wrench in expansion.

    ReplyDelete
  31. if so that's a great job by the Big 12 Commish. that or he sold his soul. i thought the Big 12 was done 3 or 4 days ago.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I wonder if Big10+2 will stay put. It would be funny if they finally got around to offering Missouri a spot.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Big12 staying together actually makes sense, even though last week I would have thought it unlikely. With A&M wanting to head East and Texas wanting to head West, it would seem like the only logical compromise.

The A&M rivalries with LSU and Arkansas does make them make sense in the SEC. A&M would be Arkansas' biggest rival in the SEC. They are already in the middle of a 10 year contract to play each other.

    ReplyDelete
  34. why can't we (the SEC) just dump Arkansas so they can join the Big 12 with TX & TAMU. the SEC can pick up Clemson or FSU. i'd rather do that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Arkansas for aTm? No thanks. I like the craziness that Arkansas adds to the league.

    ReplyDelete
  36. per Joe Schad (ESPN) at 10:38am ET.:

The departure of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10 is imminent, four sources within the Big 12 said Monday.

One source said commissioner Dan Beebe's last-minute plan to save the conference has "zero" chance to succeed. Another source said it is "very unlikely" to succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This story sums up how the Big12 might survive pretty good, although it is wordy.

Everything has shifted from what Texas will do to what Texas A&M will do. The other wild card in here that isn't discussed is Missouri, who at one point appeared head to the Big10. Should the Big10 keep expanding, then things would get weird all over again.

    ReplyDelete
  38. this is all madness. madness i say!

    ReplyDelete
  39. How many possible sources are there for this mess? Every five minutes, someone is linking an article saying someone's source said something else. It's a giant clustereff that doesn't deserve my attention, because the world is going to end before any of it can actually take place.

    ReplyDelete
  40. according to the Mayan calendar right?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I heard the Big XII actually wrote the Mayan Calendar.

    ReplyDelete
  42. it was the original commissioners of the Big 8 acutally.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It definitely appears that there are still conflicting reports.

A post I made earlier had a typo in it. I was wondering what talks Slive may have had with ESPN (not SEC) on how much the TV contract would be worth if some of the Big12 schools were added. It is possible that Beebe could get one upped with a new SEC/ESPN TV deal.

All of this is very confusing and nothing is certain. Another move by the Big10 could shake up everything.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You know who is really shaking things up? Kaisuke Honda, that's who!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm with PF. I've read the occasional article from ESPN about expansion along with whatever Homer has to say then I stop right there. I'll believe it when it's all done.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think we should add Arkansas State and LA Monroe, since every team in the SEC seems to play these two, it might as well be a conference game.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Reports now suggesting that Texas is giving up it's football program. The Texas president was quoted as saying, "It's just not worth all this stress."

    ReplyDelete
  48. Michael,

I heard that's a trick. They're moving the school to Cuba, but didn't want anyone looking. They'll be playing in the Caribbean 8 in 2011.

    ReplyDelete
  49. What is the opinion of the expansion of foosball?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Foosball has too much history for expansion. Or something.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really think so!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Momma says foosball is da devil

    ReplyDelete
  53. The formation of the Huge48 seems to make a lot of sense here, although the new 47 game schedule could be a bit hard on the players.

    ReplyDelete
  54. There is something special about the Big12 having 10 teams and the Big10 having 12 teams. I like that irony.

Of course, the Big12 should probably just rename themselves to the Missing2 and be done with it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. And if other Big12 schools don't go to the PacX, will the current Big12 members all up Colorado and say "psych, fooled you".

    ReplyDelete
  56. Steve,

OMG, that's funny. How has nobody pointed that out thus far? 10=12.12=10.10=16. OMG OMG SNORT!

    ReplyDelete
  64. This article seems to indicate the Big10 will take its time deciding on expansion, which means this topic could continue for months.

I do find it clever how the Big10 just announced they were considering it and waited to see who might be interested.

    ReplyDelete
  65. tht - I just ate lunch so really, the countdown is all that matters.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Here is a completely un-sports related story that I find simply hilarious. It seems like us wacky South Carolinians voted for a guy that had no political experience and didn't really campaign. The guy won and happens to be living at home with his dad and is up on charges of showing porn to a 19 year old college student. Yes, South Carolina is unique.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The Big 12-2 commish is telling his remaining schools that he can put together a TV deal as lucrative as the SEC's.

He then told them about some nice oil free swamp land for sell in LA.

  68. Thanks for bringing up the Mayan Calendar today.......I forgot that none of this will matter when the world ends in 2012. Thankyou.

I've read comments on a few of the TAMU sites and those guys have respectable Hate for the "sips".

    ReplyDelete
  82. sounds like somebody needs to be taught a lesson.

    ReplyDelete

I know I'm out of the loop on this, but what are the "sips" referring to?

    ReplyDelete
  84. It sounds like the aTm fan has the proper respect for football. It isn't life or death. It is much more important than that.

    ReplyDelete
  85. See here for "sip". Ironically, one of the definitions mentions it originating in Auburn, Alabama:)

    ReplyDelete
  86. My guess is the guy meant the acronym for self important person, but I would like to think he meant smiling in public.

    ReplyDelete

Sensi ...seems that the TAMU folks refer to the UT fans as "sips". Based on SFC's urban dictionary link, that seems about right.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Tigers are leading by 4!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. We may not have to travel to Oklahoma. It appears God may be bringing it here.

    ReplyDelete
  92. After some reasearch, sips is short for t-sips, which is short for tea sippers. My guess is the blue collar aggies think the blue blooded longhorns are on the high-falutin' side.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Latest report from my ESP'n says Tx and TAMU will form the Conference of Two. Not to be outdone, Lil Nicky asks Mal if UA-T can form its own conference, the WCHC.

    ReplyDelete
  94. ESPN now reporting that what's left of Big 12 will stay together (including aTm).

Winners in all this mess: Big 11 with the add of Nebraska to make 12. Boise moving to MWC makes good sense.

Losers: Pac ?? - added Colorado for basically nothing. Enjoy the hippies.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Okay, which one is more screwedd. the PacX or Colorado?

    ReplyDelete
  96. And I take this team mean aTm flexed it's muscle and showed that Texas could choose where they would be. More than likely the powers that be told Texas/aTm that unless they could pick one conference to go to, they would go nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Pac-10 and Colorado ... don't lose ... they just don't win as much.

Colorado has always heavily recruiting California ... now it will recruit players that will actually get to play in the state with regularity.

Pac 10 can take Utah .. .be the Pac 12 ... up the money with 2 new markets -- Salt Lake City and Denver.

It's not a grand slam but it could be an RBI double.

Presuming the rest stay behind, then The Big Twelve Minus Two = Texas gets whatever it wants stays together until Texas decides the new arrangment isn't working out, and it renegotiates the deal with the Pac 10 + Colorautah.

I don't think we're ever done. People will always be looking for the bigger, better deal.

  101. I don't think anything will be definitive the Big10 makes it clear it isn't expanding further.

Supposedly, the Big10 president told Beebe he wouldn't steal any more of his kids, but you never can tell. Beebe is juggling jello. If he squeezes too tight, this could get messy.

    ReplyDelete
  102. The research probably had something to do with the number of people that could fit in a phone booth anyways. That research will just have to wait.

I am seeing where Wisconsin is requesting Nebraska as their end of year opponent. Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  132. So now Nebraska is probably feeling pretty stoopid for throwing away all that tradition for nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Actually, Nebraska has already lost a lot by being stuck in the Big12 North.

To me, Colorado kind of got screwed. Prior to Nebraska leaving, the Big12 was definitely better than the PacX. Even with Nebraska gone, it still may be the better conference. Not to mention that Colorado has to pay $10 Million to get out of the Big12. That, coupled with the Big12 apparently getting a better TV deal, makes Colorado look pretty foolish.

    ReplyDelete
  134. hippies are not good at business.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Nebraska nor Colorado are by any means screwed. They just could have had similar money in the near term and maintained their traditional rivalries.

Unless, of course, the Big 12 disbands in the next 10 minutes, which could happen.

With the addition of Boise, and the Big XII looking to raid BYU and Air Force, can we go ahead and give the Mountain West credit as the fourth best football conference above the Big East and ACC. I don't care what the two have done in the past, they aren't putting the product on the field that TCU, BYU, Utah, and Boise State are.

  154. or is bsu a member of the mwc for a week?

utah obviously presents the larger tv market for pacX to expand into.

  155. Looks like Texas has decided.

  156. choosing Air Force over TCU? Is that the non-Tx teams or the Tx teams that are dictating that? Or both!?

TCU would be a much better addition to Big 12, but the northern teams probably don't want the balance weighted anymore in the direction of the Lone Star State. The sips probably were thrilled to hose TCU (and SMU, Houston, & Rice) when the Big 12 was formed, so they probably wouldn't be too eager to extend TCU an invite.

  157. chip chip - I hereby declare Tx the big winner. It looks like the Big 12 schools are giving Tx the combination to the safe. But yes, Utah may definitely come out Rose-y.

Utah will die in the PAC10+2. Those skinny boys do OK playing an easy schedule and then getting fired up for a big game once or twice a season. Let's see how tired and beat up they get playing a full-sized team each week ...even if it is only the PAC10.

  159. This has a significant effect on the SEC and what Slive could do if the Big10 expands further. Some of the stuff I have read suggested Slive was focused on moving West. It just got a bit tougher. This makes schools like FSU, Clempson, and GT more likely for the SEC. But if the Big10 doesn't go past 12, I bet the SEC doesn't either.

  160. Didn't remember Utah being "skinny". Just looked at their roster. There are a few small guys on there, but it looked pretty standard to me. OL are all around 300 pounds, except 1 dude, as are the DT's that I remember eating up Bama's OL a couple of years ago. Boise tends to be a little small, which they make up for in speed (don't tell me that can't be done, the SEC practically invented that approach while the Big 10 was looking down their noses at us), but I don't think thesame can be said for everyone west of Texas.

  161. I don't expect it, but serious case of vertigo would result if Big Ten+2 pursued further expansion and targeted the Atlanta market & fellow AAU member Ga Tech. That would max out the weird meter.

  162. how many more days til Fall practice. I'm ready RIGHT NOW!

  163. SEC takes on no teams.
Beebe (Big 12 commish) got blistered.
Utx got the best deal. It wanted to get rid of Neb. and it did.

PF-your 3:35 post-Yes. he is total fraud. I do not listen to him and I do that for a living. A couple of sites actually follow his recommendations. He is batting about 50% or a little below.

  164. Antoine walker (former NBA player with Celtics) is standing trial for bankruptcy. he owes 12.5 million with assets of 4.3 million. How do you get that far in debt?

  165. I too am a total fraud. Well, not total. But maybe I am and that's just part of my broader fraud plan to deceive you.

  166. I'm just a fraud. Total fraud requires a level of motivation I've not yet experienced.

But I do have Total HATE for UA-T. Oh yeah, I reached that level before most of y'all were born.

PF ..I was thinking more about their pencil-necked WRs, QBs and DBs. If Utah gets into the PAC 10+?, we'll have to wait and see how they hold up.

  169. Apparently the city of Houston ate the deal.

The Big 12 surviving (for now) is a good thing for college football. Slive did the right thing though by trying to pick up some of the pieces if they had broken up.

With USC effectively neutered for the next several years and the Pac 10 expansion scheme foiled, will they move behind the Big least as the least relevant BCS conference?

I've already seen it written several different places that Texas used the Big 10, BIG 12 and PAC 10 to make itself richer. As best as I can recall, the other conferences came calling and Texas just negotiated the best deal for themselves. Since Texas didn't initiate anything, how could they be using others?

  172. Absolutely nothing going on today, and we're still managed to get ourselves in sight of a page flip. Hottie Ho!

  173. I think the ACC is the most in danger of that award. The rest of the Pac-10 has been moving closer to USC for a few years now. I think they're in a solid position at the right time.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I'm also not convinced that the Big 10 didn't crash and burn. I keep seeing thecomment about them bringing up the idea just to see what everyone else would do, but I think they had more than one failed plan, then had nowhere to go.

  175. Hoopie,

Fair enough. Not sureI completely agree, but I understand what you're saying. Guess we'll get to see if they actually make the move.

  176. I am thoroughly confused how the B12 (minus2) is going to more than double their TV revenue while dropping 2 teams and losing a conference championship game... To get to the $$ figures that Beebe has proposed they will need to increase their TV revenue by approximately $90mil per year (They brought in $78mil last year).
