The Five I'm Watching: Part II

TED ROOF
Defensive coordinator
  • Age: 46
  • College: Georgia Tech '85
  • Previous role: Defensive coordinator, Minnesota (1998)
  • Theme song: ``Down in It," Nine Inch Nails
  • Relevant lyric: "All the world's weight is on my back and I don't even know why."

THE GOOD: Ted Roof has the experience and knowledge you'd expect from someone whose career is rooted in coaching college defenses. Fellow coaches were impressed by the things Roof did during his season at Minnesota. He took a terrible defense and made it average during a period of six months. He did it with a series of odd formations, blitzes, schemes. So you know he's competent. Roof doesn't struggle with confidence, which means the memories of Auburn's terrible 2009 season -- the team set a record for points allowed -- likely won't affect his approach in a negative way this fall. He'll have more talent and more bodies at his disposal this time around; Roof was limited last season by a defense that featured few reliable reserves. Two FBS assistant coaches have told me they'll be surprised if the Tigers' defense isn't significantly better in 2010. They believe in Roof.

THE BAD: The numbers. Auburn's defense wasn't very good last season. What happened? We know Roof was compromised by a lack of depth on defense, which forced him to consider conserving his linebackers after halftime. He said that wasn't a thought, that Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens were fit enough to handle 90 snaps, but I don't believe him. The Tigers were more base than they should have been during the season's second half. Talk all you want about Jessel Curry, but he's a freshman. Eltoro Freeman remains an unknown. The same goes for Jonathan Evans. Is the linebacker corps going to be that much better? I sense that coach Gene Chizik will feel pressure to make a change at coordinator if the team doesn't make significant defensive progress this season. I still project the team's defense to be below average, though it's impossible to assess any of Roof's strategic adjustments at this stage. Maybe he's developed something innovative during the past six months.

THE REALITY: Auburn will be better on defense. That's the key to the team's overall success because we know (with some degree of certainty) that the Tigers will average at least 23 points per game. That creates a reasonable margin for error. Still, I expect defense to be a weakness.

What do you think? Speak your mind!

  5. I wish I could charter a HABOTN flight to Madrid tonight.

Jet would be buying the alcohol.

Michael would be our flight attendant.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Rusted Roof substance.

    ReplyDelete
  7. THT piloting, of course.

    He can read a map.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Only if ehyou and PF are the pilots, and Norm is left in the terminal because he was late for the plane.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Though, really, Kristina would make for a fine flight attendant. She's agreeable, eager to please, friendly.

    ReplyDelete
  10. (I hope she reads this.)

    ReplyDelete
  11. incarceration is fun again!

JGT - if overall record improves, do you think Chizik will still be looking for a new DC if defensive stats are similar to last season?

how many points did we give up per game last season? rhetorical, I'm about to go find out.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I guess the dude in your avatar will provide the inflight entertainment. My sister is due to be in Barcelona tomorrow or Wednesday, can't remember which. But to say I'm jealous would be an understatement. She was in Italy during the 06 final and now this...

    ReplyDelete
  13. 358 points surrendered = 27.5 ppg in '09

that's just gross. I hope Roof can get that below 20 real soon.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That dude is BUCKETHEAD, the fastest guitarist alive.

    Take a hit off this.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would like to think we can cut the defensive points allowed to below 20 per game. 20 per game is still about 5-10 points more than I'd prefer.

    ReplyDelete
  16. THT ... not good numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  17. JGT - LGGB would be my first officer; his video gaming experience should come in handy.
2.0 would be my navigator; she has great sense of direction and is also a map reader.
I'd let MrsTHT be the lead flight attendant (unlike Delta, I won't have a minimum height requirement).

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm 100% fine with MrsTHT being flight attendant.

She must be paired with Michael, though. Them's the rules. She can take first class and leave MJT to handle coach ...

    ReplyDelete
  19. wow, this is some early substance. nice.

so does this Buckethead dude sing or just play? i had no idea who he was.

the D can't help but be better. sure hope The Bull & Evans solidify those LB spots, and quickly!

    ReplyDelete
  20. attending the coach section is similar to herding goats, i.e. perfect for MJT.

But don't ask him about his bidness

    ReplyDelete
  21. I remember Buckethead coming out playing with G&R at the MTV awards a few years back, then Axl disappearing for a few years again.

    ReplyDelete
  22. WERK - I agree. I used to be satisfied if scoring defense was under 10 ppg. Now I'll be satisfied when it gets under 15ppg. There's just more offense these days.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If we're going to Spain, I'm on the first flight.

I'll work as the translator. My Castilian is pretty solid. Catalan needs some work, but we can get by.

My Basque...well, did I tell you my Castilian was good?

    ReplyDelete
  24. i wonder if i should start an office pool here in prison at the BuyMore satellite facility on how soon before our uncle turns off blogger access again. I'm guessing sooner rather than later. But I'll enjoy it while I can.
    WARRRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. in its broadest definition, LGGB and 2.0 are fluent in el España

    ReplyDelete
  26. Defense will struggle again. I think more bodies will at least help the fatigue factor.

I still don't think Freeman will contribute. I look for Bates to be the surprise on the D, as I can see him playing more LB than DB.

    ReplyDelete
  27. How long until media days?

  29. any iphone Hotties out there, what are your favorite AU apps?

    ReplyDelete
  31. THT...my favorite AU app is the web shortcut I created for HABOTN.

    That's about it.

  34. JGT,
with the Defensive Substance this am.
I totally agree with you on your assessment's we have starting experience and back ups are suspect until we see them handle the SEC speed and experience....
i reserve my opinion until week 7 when the brain catches up with the body on "D"!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I found the schedule there via Google, after having no luck on the SEC official web site. Their latest news release?

  39. nice work THT. gluttony....i like it. :)

so, when is Fan Day? usually the 1st saturday in august. i'll be there on a fellas weekend trip if any hotties are going to be there too.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I like how you don't know when it is ... But you know you'll be there.

I am at therapy this morning. I think this would be a nice place to work. People seem cheery, content.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nick Saban don't have any stinkin time for fans...

    ReplyDelete
  42. dude, i love it. i'm sure it's not cool to you since you see these dudes all the time but i love it. plus, since i'm a huge autograph collector it's perfect.

it's a reality check for those folks who can sit up in the stands & cuss out players when they make a mistake. it helps remind me that they're really just kids. big talented kids, but still.

    ReplyDelete
  43. FSJ, if you braves AU fan day with me i'll treat you to Momma G's afterwards. deal?

    ReplyDelete
  44. brave, not Braves. man, my head is spinning this morning. i must be working too hard already.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Scottie B - I just called Tigers Unlimited and they say they haven't set the date yet for Fan Day but they say Scholarship Donor weekend will be Aug 20,21.

    ReplyDelete
  46. wow, that's some hottie luv THT. thanks. i donate, but i'm not quite on the 'scholarship donor' level just yet.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Marvelous Material Mitigates Morose Monday

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ah, I didn't foresee this one. I thought we were talking players.

I believe that you are right. If we don't see significant improvement on defense, Roof may be history at the end of the season. I just thinking we will see significant improvement.

This defense returns something like 8 starters and we will have enough numbers, although a lot of them will be young. Hopefully this will allow Roof to be a bit more aggressive.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Some nice prose from King Michael to flip previous thread. Well done.

    ReplyDelete
  50. If I go to AU fan day somebody will feel dirty afterward..Not sure if it would be me or all of the Auburn fans/players.

BTW, did anyone read the Bo Jackson article in USA Today? it was pretty darn good.

    ReplyDelete
  51. You know, I really think the Defense will be much better than people anticipate this year. I guess this is the one portion of the team that I fully believe in. Last year was an aberration in my opinion--the perfect storm you may call it. We had low numbers as a result of Tubbs's flat out lack of recruiting over the last couple years he was here, we had injuries, and we had the uncertainty of the coaching staff that led to lower numbers.

Roof's a good coach, wouldn't still be in the biz if he wasn't...the D will succeed this year. And if we get even a middle of the road performance from Newton (somewhere between the greatness some expect and Chris Todd, who shouldn't be hard to outperform), we should have a terrific season.

    ReplyDelete
  52. thanks for the heads up, ehyou.

On the flight to Spain, I can just see MJT entertaining all the goats in coach with Eurasian plumber tales.

FSJ - I have not, but I'll go take a look. Is it the same stuff that was in Los Angeles papers this past weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  53. When you are inside 8 weeks, Mondays aren't morose, it's just another day closer.

    Get happy.

    Mondays are Fun Days!

    ReplyDelete
  54. "somewhere between the greatness some expect and Chris Todd"

Wow, that's like a Grand Canyon/Michael Strahan's teeth sized gap.

    ReplyDelete
  55. well, if 2.0's "you have British teeth..." wasn't front page worthy,
    WERK's toothy comment is.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So Bama article reporting that DB Chris Jones is no longer interested in Auburn.

wtc, do you or mom have any inside info?

    ReplyDelete
  57. i'm sure this was posted somewhere but i missed it:

Auburn has selected Lee Ziemba, Josh Bynes and Aairon Savage to represent the school at SEC Media Days in Hoover later this month.

    ReplyDelete
  58. yes, it was, but I have absolutely no idea by whom.

I sure hope Aairon can have a complete season.

    ReplyDelete
  59. speaking of "I'm sure this was posted", did I ever tell y'all how much I enjoy the crunchy Cheetos that MrsTHT packs with my lunch. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMY

    ReplyDelete
  60. Complete surpriseon No.II. I also thought you would only be doing players. As all have said Defense should be better, if not Roof will be in trouble. We all expect it to be better but how much is the question,
On flight to Spain will FSJ be the go-pher and slip out of the plane for beer when we reach 20,000 feet.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i'm pretty hungry myself. i'm thinking of being naughty & going to Taco Bell. it's so wrong but soooo yummy.

    ReplyDelete
  62. ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia coach Mark Richt has suspended two players the day after their arrests on alcohol-related charges.

Sophomore tailback Dontavius Jackson was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and other motor vehicle offenses early Saturday morning. Richt says Jackson, a backup, has been suspended for a minimum of six games.

Sophomore split end Tavarres King, a returning starter, was charged with underaged possession of alcohol and has been suspended for at least one game by Richt.

  63. Why is it that "Miss Universe" is always from Earth? Is it rigged or something? Those chicks from Jupiter are totally hawt, though not as hot perhaps as those from Mercury but everyone knows that.

    ReplyDelete
  64. count me among the unsurprised. Cam will definitely be my numero uno one to watch, but after that, 3coaching positions would be on my list, one being a Roof/Rocker combination.

    ReplyDelete
  65. That's a pretty broad broad generalization, Norm. Mercury's polar chicks are pretty darn cold.

    ReplyDelete
  66. oops, forgot the

    SNORT

you're still my favorite (don't tell the others)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Those sirens of Titan ought to win Miss Universe one of these years.

    ReplyDelete
  68. What about the Amazon Women on the Moon?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Regarding the Spain flight:

I went to school in Madrid one summer while at AU, so if anyone wants to trust a tour guide operating on information that is over 20 years old, I'm your man. Also, if we want a side trip to Pamplona (San Fermin is still going on), I can find us a good park to sleep in. I can also advise on bull-running strategy, but not sure I will participate again. It seemed like a good idea back then, though.

    ReplyDelete
  70. sirens of Titan... I thought they were fictional. Are you trying to tell me they are real? Next thing you know, you'll be blaming the sirens of Titan for that BC coaching situation.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Nothing at all wrong with Amazon Women on the Moon.

    ReplyDelete
  72. running in front of bulls with horns has never seemed like a good idea... certainly not a sober good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  73. By the way, congrats to Alabama on their new National Title. I believe it's # 432. They are the #1 team on the new NCAA Football game for the Playstation, I'm sure they have already claimed this one as well.

    ReplyDelete
  74. unless, of course, the bulls are from Chicago and the horns are vuvuzelas

    ReplyDelete
  76. In my opinion; running on narrow streets in front of a bunch of pissed off bulls is equal to jumping out of a perfectly good airplane on my list of things I'll never do.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'll take it RK...

I've commissioned another flag for the stadium.

Ooops ...I see that errybody else has already visited EDSBS today.

    ReplyDelete
  80. My Pamplona trip was planned one day and undertaken the next. The bull-running was planned one minute and undertaken the next. Such is the functioning of the 20-year-old male brain.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Peeps: I'm going to make Twitter a more useful element of the HABOTN this season. I'll be tweeting stuff that may or may not be discussed by me on the blog.

For instance: I just tweeted about Florida admitting to four Facebook-related sanctions.

If you haven't added the HABOTN feed to your feed, then you ain't feedin' properly.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I also have abandoned the automatic feed. I will create feeds for each story ... so you can understand the news without clicking on the link.

Cause sometimes clicking a link sucks from an iPhone or Droid or Crackberry.

    ReplyDelete
  86. gosh, we're good, Scottie B!

JGT - ain't no tweets in prison

    ReplyDelete
  87. there were some twits, but they didn't last long.

    ReplyDelete

Jet ..thanks for the article. Mr. Whitlock makes some good points with clarity and pithy phrases.

    ReplyDelete

I'll just have to be out of the loop for the absolute "latest" info. Tweets might work for me in the off hours, but I can't have them clogging up the info stream during the day.

    Life will continue.

    ReplyDelete
  91. "It seemed like a good idea..."

  93. I want to go to Spain with Count Chocula.

You know, in a manly sort of way.

    ReplyDelete

The story Hoopie mentioned is here

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  97. Don't call me daughter, not fit to....

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  99. Yes, I'll call you Mr. Tibbs.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I can call you "Betty,"
And Betty, when I call you,
    You can call me "Al."

    ReplyDelete
  101. Well if we lose a single game this year, it's all because of that scheduling.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Never done the twitter thing.

Wow, that's one odd sentence that I just typed.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I suppose it could lend itself to being misconstrued.

    ReplyDelete
  104. RK, i told you the Braves would take 2 of 3 from the Mets!

    ReplyDelete
  105. I was hoping for all 3, but Santana shut them down yesterday.

I'm heading down to Atlanta on Friday for the 2nd game vs the Brew Crew.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I twitter myself.

By which I mean "I, myself, twitter" just so there's no confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Can we arrange for Hart to just stay in town after the series? That'd be great.

    ReplyDelete
  111. HABOTN twitter is like manna sent from the heavens.

that's your auburn athletics maintenance report for july 12th, 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  115. So now, without further ado, and by way of endorsin' my candi'cy, the Soggy Popcorn Boys (J-Z, Norm and ehyou) is gonna lead us all in a chorus of "You Are My Sunshine" -- ain't ya, boys?

    ReplyDelete
  116. But can you say that you "have it on good authority..."?

    ReplyDelete
  117. That's one of our favorite tunes.

    ReplyDelete
  120. yes Norm. i have a guy on the inside. so yeah, it's on good authority.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I think J-Z has been declared ineligible.

    ReplyDelete
  122. "j-z"? Never heard of him.

    ReplyDelete
  123. J-Z has been turned into a horny toad.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  125. i've heard 'New York State of Mind.' so, yeah, i've heard of JZ.

    ReplyDelete
  126. "New York State of Mind" = Billy Joel, there can be no other.

    ReplyDelete
  127. J-Z with a mouth full of popcorn can probably sing it better than JZ.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Scottie,

Do you mean "Empire State of Mind"?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Where has j-z been?

    ReplyDelete
  130. yup, that must be it RK. my bad.

    ReplyDelete
  131. J-Z has re-entered the world of higher education in addition to his full-time work.

He promises that he and Carmela will return in time for football season.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I hear they are inseparable these days.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Seanzie, been meaning to say thanks for setting up the WC fantasy game. That was fun!

    ReplyDelete
  134. Scottie B - yes, I was at that web site earlier, and I do not like the new design. I don't know how it looks in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox, but it blows in BOP's IE7.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Higher education?

    ReplyDelete
  137. FSJ - you missed a great set up for a real zinger. But I guess you wanted to stick to the truth ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  138. Scottie (and others) - if you like the new auburntigers.com web site, keep it to yourself! ;-)

If you found it harsh on the eyes, or otherwise annoying, let them know about it here

    ReplyDelete
  149. If I spoke my mind, everyone I know would be highly disturbed or disgusted.

  157. After checking his FB page I'm a bit concerned as well Jet.

Natalie asked how his fat girl exposé went.

He said he was presenting her today.

  158. We should be concerned. The poor boy can't afford to clothe himself properly.

  159. Kathy-Somehing is fishy about the Chris Jones deal. He named AU his leader a few months ago, even confirmaed it last week, now it looks like AU is out of his top 3.

    ReplyDelete
  160. REC...that's what's fishy.

    ReplyDelete
  161. FSJ, I thought you held REC functions in your basement.

    ReplyDelete
  162. FSJ is the Exalted Tusk of the RECEC (Red Elephant Club of Etoway County). Don't let him fool you.

Also t-minus 9 days until my 31st birthday.

  164. Exalted Tusk....good one.

PLEASE tell me that's your impaled hiney in the pic.

  167. Nope. I think that pic is from this year. However, if not for a kindly Spaniard flinging me into a doorway, I could have made the Pamplona papers in 1988. Those bulls are sneaky fast.

I like what I started this morning with my walmartian hate. Jet I do believe that they have a higher percentage of uneducated fans. That is not my biased opinion, that is from years of being around them.

  170. It don't take no education to know that Bammers ain't got none.

Bama easily has the highest % of sidewalk alum in it's home state than any other school. Nebraska may be #2. The average Nebraska sidewalk alum lives at at much higher level than the average Bama sidewalk alum. While UGA and UF have a some of these type fans the % isn't even close to Bama.

I went into a restaurant in Gadsden one night and almost every male patron was wearing a Bama hat. Manners be-damned.

  173. Well, I thought for sure that I was going to see a flip this afternoon, but instead it looks like another puppet hour breakdown. Remember back when Michael and Harrison used to entertain us? What ever happened to those days? I will concede that Michael's flip of the last thread was entertaining, but what has he done for us lately?

    ReplyDelete
  174. Look man, this is all Harrison's fault. Not mine. Harrison.

  175. 1+BEASLEY!!!

  176. Oh, hi Michael. Didn't realize you were in here. As I was saying, this is all Harrison's fault!

    ReplyDelete
  177. Harrison has really been letting us down lately. Fa real doh.

OK, I have a beer question. Who has had the BL with lime? My son tells me I would like it. I'm not so sure. He says it tastes more like limeaid than beer. Course I'm on the no alcohol diet until after boot camp. Has anyone tasted this and is it worth it?

    ReplyDelete
  179. Yeah, burn Harrison!

  180. MrsTHT this past weekend, offering an explanation, "I married what I could at the time."
Yes, I was standing right there.

Since I pretended she was joking, it cracked me up.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Sorry, Cincy, I can't help. The only lime I eat is Toomer's Limeade and Yoplait Lime yogurt, the former much better than the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Cincy - it's not the worst tasting beer I've ever had.

    ReplyDelete
  183. THT - so after all these years, it's nice to know that she's continuing to settle for you.
