News of the day, 1/3
Hey everyone. I don't have time right now to get up a full blog, but I'm working on the alleged "Muschamp-to-Texas" story. While I don't doubt that Muschamp could be talking with Texas (in earnest), and may even be there at this hour, I'd be floored, shocked, stunned, amazed if Muschamp left Auburn for the same job at Texas.
I've been all those things before -- like when the basketball team beat Wake Forest in the 2003 NCAA Tournament.
Muschamp has a new contract offer on the table from Auburn that is lengthy and lucrative. His next step is a head-coach job, which he can get just as easily from Auburn as he would from Texas. Remember, too, that Muschamp now is represented by agent Jimmy Sexton.
We'll see what develops.
UPDATE: Quote from Muschamp two days before the Chick-fil-A Bowl ... "Whatever's on the Internet or in a newspaper doesn't mean it's true. I think in our society nowadays, if it's in print, it's true. But there's a lot of fiction out there, I can tell you that."
Thanks to Press-Register ace Evan Woodbery for that stroll down memory lane.
SECOND UPDATE (@9:15 p.m.): I just spoke with the Auburn head coach. On Tuesday, he granted Texas coach Mack Brown permission to speak with Muschamp. Tuberville maintained his position that it's good for assistant coaches to be wanted.
THIRD UPDATE (@10:30 p.m.): I just spoke with Tuberville again and he said: "I haven't heard a word." He might not be the FIRST guy to hear something, but I have to believe he'd be near the top.

How shocked would you be truely. I really hope that he stays at Auburn and trust me when I say that I would truely be upset if he left, but why would he even entertain the idea if he wasn't really interested. I hope for Auburn's sake that he stays. I saw the speech for the Broyles award and absolutly admired him.....what a great coach and man.
I'd be pretty shocked. I don't know what else to say. I haven't spoken directly to Will, though that's not for a lack of effort on my part.
We'll see what happens.
Looks like West Virginia got their coach.. Terry would have been hired but as his email to us today mentioned... things are meant to be.
Pay the assistant more and TUberville less
Let's see that email.
And what happened with Chizik?
As far as coordinator duties and talent level, it's a lateral move, but Texas has more name recognition than Auburn. How many Auburn defensive coordinators left the school to become head coaches? I can't think of any. Texas, however...
If Muschamp wants a HC job, I think he thinks Texas will serve him better. And he's probably right. I won't be surprised if he pulls a Gene on us. Notice that he said "There's a lot of fiction out there," but he didn't actually deny it.
I'm with Jay. Let's see the email.
Will accepted the job at Texas
I have not heard that from a reputable source.
YOur the man Jay... I really hope that this works out.

done deal, guys. move on to the next one
I like to blog in my underpants
I'd hold off on that for the moment.
I'm not reporting it's a done deal. I have heard contradictory information.
How late will you be covering this?
My newspaper deadline is 10:45.
If those clowns at Texas Rivals got this wrong they should be fired. I don't think they do. I think they're reporting fact.
Remember the Arkansas Rivals site three weeks ago: "Muschamp's The Man"
In response to who has left Auburn to become a head coach, Petrino comes to mind. There must be a lot more promises for Will, and I believe this has been in the works for a while. CTT will have a new one well before the recruits wake up tomorrow
I'm not ready to declare Muschamp a Longhorn just yet.
I don't think this has been in the works for awhile as Texas just had their DC resign yesterday. I'm sure it was mutual and all. But I just don't think this was in the back of Will's minds vs Clemson.
This just doesn't add up to me. I'm certainly not going to be a woman scorned. But this one just doesn't make sense any way you slice it. A lateral move. He's already been given a lucrative re up on his contract. We all know he's one year away from landing a good HC job. Starting over in a lateral move just doesn't make sense.
If Will stays how will this effect his relationship with the recruits and underclassmen? They have to be wondering just how long he will be there if he interviews for another dc job.
Muschamp has his wife and 2 very young kids in Auburn. He got his Masters from Auburn. He played football at Georgia. He has family in Georgia. He has a huge, fat pay deal at Auburn. He has one of the top defenses with most players coming back next year to make him look even better...What could possibly be a reason for him leaving right now?
The only way this makes sense is if Texas is offering some Jimbo Fisher deal where WM is guaranteed the Texas job down the line.
But ... does that make any sense? Why would Texas, a school with incredible tradition and income, become betrothed to a career assistant it has no direct experience with?
I think that stuff is always overplayed. Players want to be at a place for what it is. The other stuff matters more to the parents. Judging by the excitement generated around what's called a huge success in Tuscaloosa right now a month before signing day, I'd have to say parents just haven't gotten real involved lately. I wouldn't send me kid to Alabama to play for that guy.
As far as impact on recruits, I think it's pretty minimal if he stays. They all know he's coveted and won't be at Auburn forever. They all know that.
Flaw in the rivals story. They say he's hired as co DC and linebackers coach. He's not a LB's coach...at least up to this point.
Hotties, I'm packing it in for the night. I'm still at Auburn after covering The Muschamp Dalliance, Part III and the women's basketball game (Auburn lost to G. Washington by two) ... and I still have a drive ahead of me.
I'm going to keep working the phones as I motor west along Route 85. If I get something of note, I'll post it when I get home.
Behave.
Jay, don't pull over for anybody.
When you get home, you can blog in your underpants...
although there really stopping you from doing the same at the women's BB game.

Tommy T confirmed that he doesn't think CWM is leaving for UT.
I told you that last night.
You want to see an email from an unemployed coach? I'll send you my special insider email for $1200. Kick in another hundy, and I'll show you my manboobs as well!
Love, Coach Fran
Hey anon, how many Texas defensive coordinators left the school to become head coaches at good schools?
Pardon my french, but as I mention on my blog... there is something weird at Tuberville la la land. See If I got this straight.... Muschamp all of a sudden leaves for the same job and maybe lesser pay.... Jay, next time you are in Auburn, tell Tuberville and Jacobs to get their heads out of their butts.
After thinking we had our off and def jelling... we lose the guy that made Tuberville look better than he was. The AThletic Dept is a mess. Pay the con artist Coach 5 times what the defense coach gets when it should be the other way around.
Oh and one more note about Tuberville and Jacobs running Muschamp out... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
OK I feel better.
