News of the day, 1/31

Hey everyone. My lovely lass DVR'ed "Through the Looking Glass" last night, so I'm now fully up to speed for tonight's season premiere of LOST. As you know from yesterday's blog, I'm highly geeked about this.

I know you're here for Auburn. So let's talk about Auburn.

Thanks to residents of 49 American states for making this the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net. Maine is the lone holdout since December 15. That's really disappointing considering all the nice things I said about you during my trip to "Vacationland" in 2000.

Coach Jeff Lebo said last night, and re-iterated today, that F Korvotney Barber's broken left wrist is not healing as quickly as expected. The junior was due for a re-assessment this week, but that has been delayed a week. That means Barber's best-case scenario for a return is the third week in February. Remember that he hasn't practiced since the injury in late December.

Barber is six minutes past the NCAA's medical-redshirt threshold. College athletics' governing body extended the redshirt window to 30 percent of the season this year (up from 20 percent), so it's unlikely that Barber will receive leniency from the NCAA.

He's still expected to apply for a waiver.

HABOTN fave Bryan Matthews, who is 40, has word that Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., deep snapper Dax Dellenbach has committed to play football at Auburn beginning this summer. If you're wondering why Tommy Tuberville would dedicate a scholarship to a long snapper, well, I don't have a great answer for you. I will at some point.

Michael Emerson, who plays the manipulative Ben Linus on the show, spent nearly two years in Montgomery (93-95) at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Emerson met a gal there by the name of Carrie Preston, she played Ophelia during ASF's 1995 reprisal of "Hamlet," and the two actors married in 1998.

The downside for Auburn fans: Emerson attended ASF because the institution, in conjunction with University of Alabama, offered a master's degree in fine arts. So he's technically a Bammer, though I'm fairly sure he isn't a big Crimson Tide fan per se.

Here's an excerpt from a recent interview he did with The Reel Deal:
I knew that there was one thing that I wanted to do and that was to pursue a career in the classics on stage. And when I heard about this training program at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, it looked to me like that was the answer to my dreams. That this was a way for me to withdraw from the mad scramble of my so-called career and be able to focus on something that I was interested in and that I felt passionate about.

Now, it did involve some sacrifices. One of them was freedom of movement. It meant moving to Montgomery, Ala., for two years and being in the clutches of a big institutional theater for that period of time. And I mean long hours and a ridiculously heavy load between my academic work and my stage work. It was kind of overwhelming and occasionally made me feel fairly desperate. Often, there were days when I just wanted to get in my motor vehicle and drive anywhere that was away from Montgomery.

But in the end, I got through it. And I was glad to have done it because it was tremendously focused and it took me off the treadmill of my former life.

There's a picture of Evangeline for those of you itching for a shot of this gal.

Who is the doctor for the b-ball team? It seems like everyone's injuries linger longer than first expected (Vot, Boubacar). Are they getting poor prognosese (sp?) or poor treatment?

Just seems odd to me that no one is "healing like we thought they would".

I'm on the verge of calling for a boycott of the HABOTN. We've had two days of "Lost" talk now and two pics of "Lost" actors. And not one mention of Kate (Evangeline Lilly).
To channel my inner Sharpton: That's egregious, heinous and outrageous. If there's not a pic of Kate by showtime this evening, the HABOTN will be picketed like it's a Duke lacrosse player.

very cool connection to the asf. i used to really enjoy seeing plays there (even when it was held at a junior high school in anniston). re: recent defensive signees, does this mean that the new dc is having a big impact or were these guys already fairly committed to au?

The team doctor is Michael Goodlett.

I am not a fan of him personally, but it's not fair to say he has anything to do with healing time. Conversely, I don't credit him for Lucas Hargrove's speedy recovery from a broken foot.

re: defensive signees -- I don't think Rhoads is having a major impact on the recruiting trail. Muschamp was an outstanding recruiter as well.

Evangeline Lilly? You mean Dominic Monaghan's ex-girlfriend?

Josh, that sounds more like Jackie Chiles from Seinfeld, but the point is a solid one. If you're going to stray from the Auburn, GTH, early 80's Youtube videos, etc. and get down with lost, then you HAVE to put Evangeline's picture up. And I agree on the other girl. Some episodes (and the picture on your blog) she looks very attractive. Other times, notsomuch.

Don't you be gettin' testy with me, Mr. Hate. You know who I'm talking about. (And yeah, I took off points for dating the hobbit. But added some back when he got the boot. I'm nothing if not fair.)

The boycott, as you can plainly see by the additional comment in support of my position, is gaining steam. You have roughly three hours to comply with our very reasonable demands.

Who was it I argued with about the deep snapper recruit? I think it was one of the anonymous'. He is signing, but get this ... rivals gives him a 2 star rating? Auburn wants to redshirt him.

This makes me think that I was right all along. There is more to this than meets the eye, and the Tubs and crew know what the hell they are doing.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

What are they doing? You tell me.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, that is what I don't know. But I have confidence that THEY know. I think maybe he's a pretty good center. Truth is, I have no idea. But somebody knows. Let's ask Brian why they gave him two stars. I'd like to know.

Years ago, back when Y102 was WHHY, they had a trivia game. This old lady calls in and the DJ asks, "Do you know the answer to the trivia question?"

Her answer was classic ... "No, I don't know but I wisht I did."

That is what I am saying.

auburnmath101,

Are you saying it is a good thing that he got 2 stars from rivals? Is that the sign that the coaches know what they are doing?

6:24 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, if not ... then what is the point of stars?

Or is that a rhetorical question.

I know, maybe Tubs convinced Rivals to give him two stars so we all wouldn't think he was an idiot. That must be it.

The sign that the coaches know what they are doing? I don't know. Maybe it's more the fact that we are a consistent Top 25 team. That we are generally in the hunt for an SEC championship even on "off" years. That we have 40 plus players in the NFL. All of those things started with recruiting. So yes, that's my sign that the coaches know what they are doing.

Chances are, this kid will wind up being a better long term contributer than the great Enrique.

It was me you had that argument with. This situation still hurts my head. I think that he is a gray shirt or a preferred walk on and they want to give him some publicity. Or I am just in denial.

Have you ever seen anyone on rivals that has one star? I am fairly certain if you have a pulse you get two stars. Anyway I heard the kid is going to be tight end IN THE SPREAD.

6:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've noticed Rivals adding stars to a recruit after being selected by a major D-1 team like AU. I guess they figger if CTT wants him he's got to be at least a "2". Rivals and Scout determine stars prior to the Hs senior season. Rivals adds stars for a good senior season. I have not noticed Scout changing the star rating for a player. Rivals has us #16 and Scout #17. Scout doesn't count the 2 soft verbals in the point tabulation.

I don't watch LOST but still think Elizabeth(photo) is hot.

You are missing my point two stars is the worst there is on rivals. If you can feed yourself you get two stars. As far as this kid getting redshirted, it is because Auburn's long snapper is coming back next season. So we will have to wait a whole entire year before watching this kid snap the ball 12 yards. I can hardly contain myself. I might even bring a radar gun to the game and see how fast he can snap it. With all this attention he's getting I will be dissapointed if he doesn't break 80 mph.

Who's the trashbag grabbing his yodle on the front?

Leon Hart was a 4 star. A so so 4 star. These clowns on WNSP were claiming he was one of the biggest 5 star busts EVER.
Worst radio programming in the south can be found on Mobile's very own WNSP. If there was an "Auburn" equivalent to WNSP I would not listen to it either. Just plain gross.

7:26 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

You know how I feel about WNSP.

Also, this dude named Jorge Wright (DE from suburban Miami who allegedly is headed to West Virginia) has zero stars on Rivals.com. Check him out.

7:37 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just checked out your guy he just committed. Give it a day or two and he will magically become a two star (ala Derrick Lykes). Between UL monroe and UL Layfatte they have 49 two stars... one stars don't exist.

WNSP blows more and more. The show "2 chicks and lee" should be used as a torture device. The sound of those girl's voices makes me want to wrap my car around the nearest telephone pole.

By the way, great opening question Mr. Ball Launcher.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

What I have heard is, that he can snap it 8o miles an hour while grabbing his yodle and simultaneouly flicking a bird at the opposing team. Then right after he snaps it he lines up and tight end and runs a 50 yd post route for a TD. Word is that it works every time. I think it is on his highlight reel on Rivals.

9:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

correction ... "lines up AT tight end"

Sorry the only thing you are probably going to find on that kid's highlight reel are some truely righteous long snaps.

You wanna hear cruel?

You all know much I heart LOST. So it's 7:54 p.m., six minutes before the season premiere, and the cable goes out.

No joke.

"Area outage"

Cable returns at 9:08. I can't make this up. I missed the season premiere. I'm looking back through my day wondering what I did to deserve this kind of cosmic retribution.

What did you do? Seriously? How 'bout that terrible Evangeline Lilly photo you dug out? Sorted through dozens and dozens of great photos to find the one that looks like she just rolled out of bed after a night at the Supper Club. That ain't right.

And that's the reason for your "outage." You screwed around with Kate. Karma.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

You're the one who described Maggie Grace (Shannon from season 1) as "not too shabby." You have trouble ahead, too, for that comment.

10:45 PM
Blogger Josh_Moon said...

Hey, she wasn't "shabby." I said so. I thought it was a pretty decent compliment. I mean, I like Maggie Grace. She's no Molly Sims or Evangeline Lilly, but she's not too shabby.

I don't see the slight. It's not like a posted a just-outta-the-bed, walkin-with-a-crotch-grabbin-hobbit pic of her.

Jay,
The storm that came through Mobile knocked out our dish in the middle of the show, so we missed it too. After consulting the almighty Tivo, last night's episode will be rebroadcast on the 7th. So you've got that going for you. Which is nice.

I may have to go the iTunes route.

I don't think I can wait until the 7th. Still, thanks for lookin out. That's what I love about the HOTTIES.
