News of the day, 1/17

Hey everyone. I expect this to be a crazy day.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported this morning, without even a hint of sourcing, that Paul Rhoads has accepted an offer to become Auburn's new coordinator.

UPDATE: The information is accurate. Barring an unforseen last-minute procedural snag, Rhoads will be announced as the Tigers' top defensive coach this afternoon. He's been remarkably successful at Pitt, where he didn't receive much national attention because the Panthers' weak offense limited the team's overall profile. A win against West Virginia in the regular-season finale earned Rhoads some love.

He was Tuberville's top choice in 2002, but turned down Auburn's offer because Pitt sweeneted his deal significantly. Tuberville has gone back after five years with added exposure and a fatter bank roll. Now it's enough.

HOUSEKEEPING NOTE: Remember to read the comments section often. The HABOTN works differently than the other blogs in that our comments section is a running commentary -- rather than a litany of inane flamage.

OK, it's generally not inane. It got that way last night with people arguing about Jeff Lebo of all people. The Tigers beat LSU last night. Maybe he's a great coach now.

Today's story from the Montgomery Advertiser print edition:
Tuberville narrows defensive search

Thanks for reading the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the net.

inane: lacking significance, meaning, or point : silly

See what I mean, not even you think AU Bball is important enough to consider as a subject of conversation.

Jay, you weren't kidding about the lack of sourcing in the article from the Pittsburgh paper. Must be nice.

When I used the word "inane," it was identifying the rhetorical jibber-jabber that was going on last night between auburnmath and a few anonymous posters.

I don't think Auburn basketball is inane.

the sporting news, citing "a source" is saying that rhoads is coming to auburn. not a lot to work with there, either.

I mean, I know the information is accurate.

The Advertiser doesn't permit the use of unnamed sources in any manner or case. So ... I'm trying to confirm things officially right now.

Good save on "inane".

Should the period have been before or after the quotation mark?

Here are Pitt's total def rankings since 01 along with that years record:

2001- 7th, 6-5
2002- 12th, 9-4
2003- 79th, 8-5
2004- 73rd, 8-4
2005- 31st, 5-6
2006- 87th, 6-6
2007- 5th, 5-7

Some very good years along with average to poor years. Overall I would say that is a decent body of work. Perhaps not the best guy out there but someone who isn't totally overmatched either. I'm not totally sold, but thats more because I really haven't watched very many Pitt games so i can't compare the talent levels of our defense versus theirs.

I think he will do fine. I particularly like the idea that he coaches defensive backs. We have some great ones, I just wish someone could teach them how to turn around and look for the ball. Maybe Rhoads has that skill in his bag.

auburnmath101, in the spirit of Alabama fans legion wide, "wait 'til next year". Auburn bball will be significant with a full roster. There's still a good chance they sweep your "talented" Tide team again. A chance..

Thanks for the stats.

I agree with your conclusion -- solid numbers, but they should be viewed with a critical eye because none of us really know what kind of talent Pitt had each year.

Clearly things were rolling in 01 and 07. Tuberville sought him after both seasons ...

I didn't say anything about the "talented" Tide team. I could care less what is going on in T-town even though I have a coaching friend there. I hope they lose every game. I hope we beat their eyes out just like last year. But that's my point, I want to do that to everybody.

As for next year, trust me, terrible things will happen and we will be the "poor Auburn" team again. Lucky for us, LSU is in even worse shape than we are.

Everyone should be happy to hear this. I am through talking about bball. The proof is in the pudding. At the end of the season, tell me what it tasted like.

That was truly funny. But I'm not talking about it anymore. Really. You can't make me talk about what I am not talking about.

I just watched the Deron Furr highlights. Either they were playing bunch of girls, or the kid is Vince Young.

anon ... where did you get those stats? I'd like to see Auburn's for the same years just out of curiousity. Hook us up.

Click Division I(current) for this year and archived for years past then click on National Rankings(I think it only has back to 1999 but I might be wrong on that). It has it broken down into various categories, but you can also click a team name and view most of the relevant stats for that team and how they stack up in their conference and nationally.

I'll be interested to see what Deron Furr can do. Prior to Franklin's arrival, there was some talk about him playing another position in college.

If nothing else, rhoads' hiring will give us a leg up on our second opponent this year. His defense kept wva from a shot at the title.

6:14 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Eh. You think WVU will still be WVU next season ... now that Rodriguez and Steve Slaton are gone?

6:26 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Are they going to move the West Virginia game or not? I wish they wouldn't. I would like to play them early with their new head coach.

As far as Rhoads goes, i think that is a good fit for Tuberville. A high energy guy who is willing to recruit. I just watched an interview of his, and he seems pretty personable and not a blow hard (Al Borges).

Blogger scott,will not,from tucson said...

Probably not, but, knowing (and loving) Auburn as I do, we have a history of going to "far off" places on the road and performing poorly (remember Syracuse). wva still has talent and (i'm probably in the minority on this) I think they made the right choice in retaining their interim coach--at least for this year. They will have some stability in their program for the coming year and could be a tough opponent.

OK, so what's the deal, Jay? Still no official word from Auburn...is Rhoads getting cold feet?

7:40 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

You are correct. No official word from Auburn. I have been told to stay on alert until as late as 10 o'clock ...

7:42 PM

You really think Auburn will offer him $400,000 that seems like too much? He should pay Auburn for getting him out of Pittsburgh. That team and that city sucks.

8:37 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Noel Devine is a pretty nice back up for Steve Slaton, WVU wont be lacking at RB.

8:54 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I don't think this deal is going to made official tonight. I have no idea what's going on.

It could be something really basic or something really complicated. The communication lines that were flowing out of Auburn earlier in the day have all but shut down. I'm generally a conspiracy theorist, but I'm reserving judgment for now.

My guess is that newspapers WON'T be running the "All Rhodes lead to Auburn" headlines.

Maybe "Fork in the Rhodes"?

I'm headed to bed.

I've been told the delay is simply a function of the administrative process. I expect an announcement on Friday morning.

10:48 PM

Uh oh - "The Process"!

9:08 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

No Jay - a function of "The Process" is to reverse records, as in 6-7 ---> 7-6, a'ight?
