News of the day, 1/7

Hey everyone. I was at the Auburn-Xavier game last night and the dunk you see pictured at right ... it was the most vicious, ambitious basketball move I've seen in my entire life. Frank Tolbert got posterized and that's that.

"You just have to own up to it," guard Tez Robertson said afterward.

The HOTTIES are here for football information, though, so let's move forward.

Big up to all the peeps who spend part of their day perusing the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net. We set a record for website traffic last weekend. Thanks for that.

Today's story from the Advertiser:
Tuberville to bring DC candidates to campus this week

I expect DT Pat Sims to announce tomorrow that he will forgo his final year of eligibility for the NFL Draft. I need to leave a little wiggle room on this because I've seen these decisions go 180 degrees in a hurry. Still, an Auburn player -- one of Sims' best friends -- told me last night that Sims has decided to leave. I'm trying to talk with Sims this afternoon to confirm things.

Here's some footage of him owning Les Gators de Florida in 06.

UPDATE (@3:20 p.m.): Sims has declined comment.

Reserve QB Blake Field's father told the Opelika-Auburn News on Sunday night that his son will transfer to Valdosta State. Field has one season of eligibility remaining. He's one of those guys who deserves another change to plan his career. He didn't get the chance he probably deserved here -- was Brandon Cox really that good? -- and I'm convinced Field could have been a useful player at another school. I hope he plays really well at Valdosta. He deserves a little limelight.

In a related note, Columbus, Ga., quarterback commitment Deron Furr told AuburnSports.com Monday that he's planning to sign with Auburn and enroll in school this week. He said Field's decision to transfer accelerated his interest in being with the Tigers for spring drills.

Is Auburn in a nose dive that resembles a sea gull hitting the surf?

Losing potential A+ Recruits, and some Guys leaving to the NFL early. Tubervilles lack of Depth in QB will haunt him.

Do you think Tuberville has to con a DEF coordinator into thinking that Auburn is absent of internal problems that a coach will not like.?

I don't think Auburn is sinking. I'd tell you if I thought it was.

The problems are overrated in the sense that there's nothing new going on. It's the same ol' stuff. Coaches have overcome that stuff before.

There's a surplus of QBs there. We don't know who's who among them because we had a 3 year starter taking the snaps. No, Jay, Brandon was not that good. But that was a system that wasn't exactly easy to learn. Brandon was in it 4 years.

Auburn is one of the most talented teams in the nation. Defensively, it's hard to find better talent aside from LSU. Our guys have a chance to be considered even more talented than that when it's all said and done. The DL keeps getting stockpiled with excellent talent.

Recruiting:

It's January. Lots of action left to field. Have a drink, Auburn Football Stuff. Take a load off.

AFS:

For an example of what a program in a nosedive looks like, why don't you ask you buddy Terry. He was at the controls when we went down in flames in '98. I think that a program that has averaged almost 10 wins/season over the last 6 years is going to be OK.

As my 2 1/2 year old says when we are watching Bambi, "dey gonna be awright daddy."

ASF, your Chicken Little routine, i.e. "the sky is falling" makes me wonder if you are a spy. This is hardly the end of the world.

I will tell you this right now, AU will contend for the big one next year. Write it down. You heard it here first.

As far as recruits go, we will get what we need. You can count on that too.

P.S. You are really going to like Chris Todd.

AFS, you typify the majority of Auburn fans I know, over reactionist and vast pessimist. You ever considered posting or commenting on something positive?

I've been corresponding with AFS for years, back to like 2001, and I can assure you he isn't a "spy."

He's just a little crazy and fatalistic.

Recruiting Update:

Per our good man PM. Deron Furr is enrolling early. This on the heels of the gloom and doomers saying he would take his services elsewhwere. Bobby and Jimbo will not get their visit. Jarmone Fortson, the real deal, is part of the package.

No. That's per AuburnSports.com and AUTigers.com ... absolutely not Phillip Marshall.

No, per P. Marshall, Furr is enrolling early. "Per" as in Phillip said so.

Ah. See what your comment meant now. I read Phil's blog which had the info there first. An hour prior to Rivals. Doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. It was good news.

Furr is a good athlete. Look at his film, though. Is this guy a big time college QB? I don't know.

Now, Fortson, that's a good one. We don't have a jump ball receiver like him. Defenders bounce off of him in the air. Great balance. That's a very valuable player.

I still believe Chris Slaughter has some star ability.

Didn't understand why Slaughter and even Swinton didn't get any touches in the bowl game. According to every single report you get on Slaughter he's got the speed, the extraordinary hands, and the playmaking skills. Swinton is fastest player on the team. You can do a lot of damage with guys like that in a spread.

I'm thinking maybe there's something up with Swinton. Maybe, physically, he didn't fit the old offense. Slaughter could have been in the same boat whereas Hawthorne likes the contact. Slaughter and Swinton were talked about enough during bowl practice. Where were they?

Does everybody know "Shane", the goofball Crimson Tired fanatic on the Finebaum show? Before you judge, I haven't heard that show in a long time. I used to listen to it on Mondays when Pat Dye came on air.

Any who, is Shane mentally challenged? There are several indications that lead me to believe this and I certainly don't want to belittle someone that may be seriously mentally challenged.

I've seen too many incredible moves to the basket that resulted in phenominal dunks to classify that one as the best. It was pretty good. A good many of them in the college game came from Arkansas players in the '90s. Anderson from UK amazed me several times. Larry Johnson (before he ruined his back) did some amazing overpowering dunks at UNLV.

I think Shane's only mental deficiency is that he is a Bamer. He is one of the ones that thinks little Nicki is going to lead them to another 12 national championships and after that the Bear is going to rise from the dead to reclaim all the glory of old. I've got bad news for them ... it ain't gonna happen.

P.S. Is there any doubt the the SEC is the best football conference in America?

re: The Xavier dunk.

That was the best dunk I've seen live. Vince Carter v. Frederic Weis was better overall.

regarding your article about the coaching search. Will should be upset at his agent for letting him sign a contract which was not correct not the other party.

Will's a hot head. Knee jerk reactions happen often for those types.
