News of the day, 1/6
Hey everyone. More Muschamp goodness. E-mails still are flooding in from angry Auburn peeps, some of them demanding that Jay Jacobs be held responsible for Will Muschamp's recent decision the leave Texas.
That's not a useful remedy.
The issues Muschamp had with Auburn's chain of command don't solely rest on Jacobs. He recently learned that the contract he signed in October 2006 wasn't exactly the agreement he'd forged with Jacobs a few months earlier. There was no provision for Muschamp's earnings to be guaranteed if coach Tommy Tuberville was fired.
The (significant) people who were directly and indirectly involved with the coup to oust Tuberville in 2003 remain in place. All of them. Had the Tigers lost to Alabama in November, I'm fairly certain a change would have been made at the top. That's about the time Muschamp began examining his contract to make sure he was protected. He wasn't.
Jacobs offered to change things after Muschamp learned of the discrepancy. This was before Muschamp talked with Texas. For reasons that I don't fully understand -- and probably never will -- Jacobs' offer didn't give Muschamp much satisfaction.
Still, the contract situation isn't what made Muschamp leave. He jetted for a few reasons, though an important one involved his belief that Texas has better esprit de corps.
He has been careful to avoid burning bridges. He likes Tuberville. He likes working for Tuberville. He likes Auburn. He just got a better vibe from Texas.
**In other news: The men's basketball team lost by 23 points at home to Xavier.

Are we spending 300 million, or whatever it is, HOPING that Lebo can put together a basketball program? I think it is becoming very clear that he cannot. We are not any better. It is truly pitiful. I wonder if Charles Barkley wants to become a basketball coach?
that was supposed to be 30 million.
I wouldn't say all of those guys are there now. One's dead and one other eliminated of authority.
Jimmy Samford? You think he played a role in anything in Nov. 2003?
On basketball: Yea, it's pretty sad. The men's team is terminally flawed, though it would have been decent if Dollard and Barber were around.
I think I am serious about Charles. I wonder if he would do it?
Walker and Housel
i would elect charles
Jay,
If this truly was a blunder on the administration then I'd have to believe that Tuberville would be on fire, which doesn't appear to be the case. I also find it difficult to believe that the first time Muschamp heard from UT was last Wednesday. If the contract doesn't state what he agreed to then he had a very poor lawyer reading over it in 2006. I'm not saying we have the greatest administration, but I'm not pinning this on them.
Oh man. Walker and Housel? Authority? Are you kidding?
Muschamp's former lawyer did mess up on the contract. There's no question.
I'm not pinning "this" on anyone. I try to tell you what happened and it's up to you to decide who was right and who was wrong.
I think the contract snag simply is a symptom of the problems that led Muschamp to leave. I'm not planning to write a whole lot about it in the newspaper.
Men's basketball is an omen.
They were Pinnochios just like Jacobs is.
You're pretty reckless. Good thing this crap is on a blog.
Reckless? How so?
and your an "anonymous" goon...shut up
"A) Had the Tigers lost to Alabama in November, I'm fairly certain a change would have been made at the top. B)That's about the time Muschamp began examining his contract to make sure he was protected. He wasn't."
A)That's quite an unsourced assertion. Reckless. Unprofessional.
B) Muschamp just inked a ONE YEAR deal with Texas. So he's more "protected" now? That's clueless.
You know, I really don't care who the new DC is. Honestly, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to coach defense.
Here are the 10 things you need to know to play defense (and coach it):
1) Tackle anyone who has the ball.
2) Don't get beat on a block.
3) If someone throws the ball, try to catch it.
4) If you can't catch it, try to knock it down.
5) If you can't knock it down, refer to rule #1.
6)If you find yourself with nothing to do, hit anyone who comes near you.
7) refer to rule #1
8) refer to rule #1
9) refer to rule #1
10) refer to rule #1
That's it. Nothing to it.
Easy. Riiiiight. That's why Auburn was willing to pay Muschamp $400k+. Because what he did was easy.
Personally, I think Muschamp was a heck of a defensive coach, one that players love to play for, and it showed on the field in every game. While it was troubling to lose him, I don't fault the guy for looking for another job if he was unhappy or felt unappreciated. I can wish it were otherwise, but I don't fault him a bit. He handled the change in an honorable way: didn't talk to the press, was upfront and open about his interview and told his boss first. That's more than Petrino, Saban or even Tuberville did in their last job change. I'm saddened by him leaving, but wish him the best. Some lucky team will get one hell of a head coach in a year or so.
As for his replacement, I'm not worried as Tuberville has a tremendous track record for finding coaching talent. He ought to write a book on the subject.
"The issues Muschamp had with Auburn's chain of command don't solely rest on Jacobs." Maybe not. I don't have any ill will towards Jacobs. I just have serious questions about whether or not he was/is the most qualified person for the job when he was hired. I think many people look at it like he was promoted due to his closeness to those same insiders that JG Tate admits are still in power. Jacobs may be telling 100% the truth on this Muschamp thing and may be 100% in the right. But, if AU had a truly qualified AD (see Florida, Georgia) that understands both the business side and the people/relationships side of running a multi-million dollar athletic department, then people wouldn't be looking at everything with so much doubt. Any decision Jacobs makes is looked at as wondering who really is making the decision.

What do you have to offer in here? I can't stand people like you that really appear envious toward others that are privvy to inside info. I can tell you without a morsel of a doubt Jay is right on the money. Your tone is insulting and outright ignorant.
I don't consider that reckless reporting at all. You tell me what isn't correct. Then we'll talk.
As for it being "unsourced," well, you're wrong.
Mr. Anonymous ... now look what you did. You went and pissed Jay off so bad he had to go cool off for a full 2 1/2 hours before he could respond again. I'm here for you JG.
Jay:
Then tell me how he is more "secure" now with a one year deal than he was before?

The "facts" from CWM don't add up.
Angry Anonymous:
You need reading comprehension 101. Go back and learn the timing of these events to better understand what you're missing.
You can rip his decision-making all you want. I'm just telling you what went down and why. If it's something you wouldn't have done, well, that information will come in real handy when Tuberville hires you to become defensive coordinator.
I'm excited about it, too.
Angry anonymous, I THINK your comment was directed at me. I read quite well and have excellent comprehensive skills. What I am not missing is what is written in between the lines of your comments ... you are an idiot.
I will tell you something else too. See if you can comprehend this. Despite the common myth, defense DOES NOT win football games. THE OBJECT of the game is to SCORE more points than your opponent. IF YOU DO NOT, you will lose. PERIOD. Case in point - AU 2007. Great defense - terrible offense. And what was our record sports fans? That's right ... 9-4. And if we had scored more points than our opponents, what would our record have been? Right again ... 13-0.
All you need to be sucessful is a defense that gives the offense the opportunity to score points. If you can't score touchdowns, then defense doesn't matter. Hopefully we have that problem corrected. We'll see.
With all of that said, I will restate my position ... Who in the hell cares who the new DC is as long as he is reasonably competent and can give the offense a fighting chance to score.
That's all I have to say about that, bubba.
