News of the day, 1/11
Hey everyone. I delayed opening today's post in the hope that I'd have some substantive news to share about the defensive coordinator situation.
I do not have that.
The show must go on, of course, so we're live. I've been covering Tommy Tuberville since he was at Ole Miss (I've been around him since the 98 Egg Bowl) and I've never known him to be so secretive. Even in the situations where he requests certain information be kept out of the papers, Tuberville often will share information. Not this time. He has been remarkably low-profile here. Protocol breaks for a reason. My guess is that he's pursuing someone who doesn't want this dalliance to be known outside his current organization.
Regardless, one of the Tigers' biggest recruiting weekends is here and there is no coordinator. I'm surprised. Tuberville and his staff always have their hands full during January weekends with all the prospects in town, so they'll probably have to dial down the search process for a few days. That's if it isn't dialed down already.
I have no idea what's going to happen. I'd tell you if I knew.
We may not be as flashy as Maurice Jones-Drew, but we are the Auburn blog on the 'net.
Not sure what to say about the men's basketball team. Coach Jeff Lebo said he was proud of his team's effort in the Tigers' 76-70 loss to Arkansas on Thursday night. I certainly won't fault the group's effort. Of particular interest to me is guard Frank Tolbert, who give the Tigers an identity. He is the hardest-working Auburn player since Bryant Smith circa 2000.
Tolbert dives and slaps and stuffs and hustles all over the place. The problem is that the out-of-control approach that makes him so exciting also makes him an offensive liability. So it goes.
They just have to play with nine guys and that's that. Until there are nine useful guys ready to go every night, the true postseason will be out of reach.
Nell Fortner can complain about her schedule as much as she wants. How about the men? They opened the SEC season on Thursday night. Now they're on their way to Florida, where they play on Saturday morning. Bogus.

Something's definitely not on protocol with this search. I think there's a decent chance that isn't good news. I'm not a naysayer. But, obviousy, Tuberville has his hands extremely full.
Waiting on the Jags this weekend?? Dave Campo???
I have never seen anything like this....THis whole thing blows my mind. Not even the littlest clue about what in the HE double hockey sticks is going on. JEEZ!
It happens sometimes.
I think it's going to be Larry Blakeney. Just kidding.
Wayne Hall?
Bill Belichick? He might be the reason Tuberville is staying so quiet -- doesn't want to distract the Patriots' season.
Joke. Humor. Funny.
On a serious note, James Willis makes sense. I would like that I think.
How does James Willis make sense?
I mean, look. I like the guy a lot. Tell me why he'd be in better position to become a defensive coordinator than, say, Terry Price or Don Dunn -- both of whom have significantly more experience.
We don't have a guy on staff that should be the DC. Dunn and Price are very good at what they do now. I don't think it translates over to DC.
Where is Tracy Rocker coaching? Isn't he coaching D somewhere?
No Kirby Smart please. That's all I ask.
I got to think (and i'm drunk... seriously) that Tubbs is going after someone else's DC. I hear the name Brian Van Gorder, although he was just hired, do you think that is a possibility? Muschamp kinda screwed us on the timing though, but maybe we could offer him more money and better players.
I heard some talk about VanGorder the other day, but I don't think he'd be a great fit.
What's wrong with Kirby Smart? He's a Saban guy ... just like Muschamp was.
Billy Muschamp got the superstar treatment in Texas. It appears he really enjoys that. He'll definitely have the power personality around there. I noticed Billy reads forums and blogs, and listens to the radio. He was quoted as saying the Longhorn Nation hasn't said he DBs don't turn around to look for the ball yet.
We all know why Billy Muschamp said that. Technology is something that nearly eilminates the word "candid" these days, unless you're one Thomas Hawley Tuberville.
People have to watch what they say these days. That is, if they care to have what they say posted all over the internet. If you consider yourself one with integrity, this is no problem foe you.
I'd like to send a special, and over due, thanks to guys like The G, Uncle Phil, and Chuckie Gold for doing what they do. These guys put it out on the line each day. There's no going back once it's there. These guys are probably underpaid considering the backlash they sometimes get for dealing in facts.
I guess you guys have some extremely thick skin?
I don't have particularly thick skin. I cope with the hate by not reading the message boards very often. Writers get ripped all the time on there and, well, 97.3% of it is undeserved.
The other 2.7% emails me (or posts here) and I deal with it that way.
I might miss a nugget here or there, but I get enough without reading the boards.
Was the game on TV today? Gotta say I'm disappointed with the coverage Auburn Basketball gets from any source.
Message boards are really useless. And sometimes really disturbing.
Oh yea -- the game was on Raycom. I watched it on the NBC affiliate here in Montgomery. Those jokers really need to get HD cameras!
And, yes, message boards have almost no redeeming qualities. Most of the guys who work for the message-boards sites, though, are awesome.
Okay, in spite of everyone's apparent negative feelings about message boards etc., Auburn Sports.com is linking Tub to Campo. Is Dave Campo the guy? I think he definitely qualifies in the experience category.
I don't know about this Dave Campo thing. I mean I see the connection and it would be nice to have a former NFL head coach as your DC. But how old is that guy? The last three DC hires have been younger high energy guys. I don't see Campo recruiting or taking orders from Tuberville during a game. I could be dead wrong, but I don't see it.
A couple of things ...
Tuberville told me (and I wrote it a while back) that he wants his next DC to be someone who stays a while. That means an older guy wouldn't be a problem at all -- as long as he's committed.
Second, Tuberville's in-game strategic influence is overrated. If he trusts the DC's decisions, as he did with Muschamp, Tuberville doesn't get involved very often.
Good points and duly noted especially about the guy that sticks around a while.
I guess we will find out soon enough now that the jags are done. If he is hired i hope he can recruit considering that recruiting machine on the other side of the state.
Dont listen to Alan Jay G Tate; He is uncredible
Jay, what did you think of Moon's Commentary today? Alot of posters on scout in a frenzy about it and he uses you as one of his sources
Isn't that interesting that I can be a source for something?
I did report some of that. Other elements of that story were not confirmed by me in print. Josh's overall idea was on point, though, in my opinion.
It's crap JG. If nobody has the guts to put it in print in a real story, then that coward Moon shouldn't try to sneak into a commentary column. He stated it as fact, plain and simple, without any support for it.
No need to blow a gasket. It's just not that big a deal.
