News of the day, 2/1

Hey everyone. Disappointing Thursday night for me. An itsy-bitsy little "rain event" knocked out my cable service (hugs and kisses, Knology) from 7:54 p.m. until a few minutes past 9 o'clock, eliminating my ability to see the LOST premiere.

I actually had a conversation with my television, quietly taunting me with its seemingly innocent blue screen. I yelled at one point. The television never responded.

Highly unhappy, I was.

I got an iTunes girt certificate for Christmas and, you know, this would be a swell time to redeem said code. Thank you, Citibank, for providing me a "free" iTunes gift card and critical relief in my time of need.

As always, thanks so much for stopping by the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.

Tommy Tuberville is making his final in-home visit today. The lucky winner is Darvin Adams, a 6-foot-2 wideout from Kennesaw, Ga., who committed to Auburn last summer. Tuberville began his day at Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy, home of TB recruit Enrique Davis and OL commitment Jermaine Johnson, and will stop by Adams' pad before heading home.

"I'll be happy to get home," Tuberville said. ``It's a grind out here on the road."

Auburn has made a small adjustment to its football schedule. The West Virginia game now will be a Thursday night game on Oct. 23. It will be televised by ESPN.

The game initially was scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 6, which now includes an Auburn home game against Southern Miss.

The revised schedule is included in my little Advertiser story.

I like the schedule change. It gives a chance to get the new O going early and still gives us a break before W. Va and heading into Georgia. I feel that our talent peaks in the 2009 season and wish we had that year for the easier schedule.

"It's a grind out here on the road."

You gotta love that quote. I know it is a grind to some degree; there's a lot of travel involved. But Tubs knows when to throw in a choice one liner just to let them know he's working hard for the people.

I'm voting Tubs in '08.

sorry about your LOST mr. tate. i've never seen an episode, but if that had happened during 'Prison Break' i would've had a nice conversation with my tv too.

did anybody see the DB George Baker from Miami de-commit? he has been committed since september. hmmm....

maybe tubs needs to visit that kid before he comes home. dunno.

Yeah, something tells me the way Tubbs travels and the way I travel are in two different worlds. I'm sure it's a grind on the road being away from the family, but it helps to stay in four star hotels and have AU's private jet at your disposal.

Tubbs aint exactly staying at a Red Roof Inn and flying coach on Southwest.

I also heard that Charles Deas is not a lock anymore? I am not a doom and gloom type guy but what is going on this year? FSU has trouble up to their tomahawks and recruits are running to their program. We've been in committed relationships with some of our recruits for months and cant close the deal. What gives??

I too suffered through the Knology blackout, brother.

(Or, as it is known in east montgomery, the hour-long flash forward inside the coffin from the Season 3 finale)

But the local ABC general manager assured it will re-run immediately before next Thursday's 2nd episode.

Thanks for the support, Landon.

I feel better knowing that other people were sad and sorrowful for that painful hour.

I've never been so glad to have Charter. If that had been me, I might have flipped out like Michael Douglas trying to order breakfast at Whammyburger.

I've been thinking about a dish switch. Every February, Knology again says it won't offer the MLB Extra Innings package that is available on the dish and CHARTER.

I don't get it. I've never understood how Charter can make something happen that Knology can't, but here it is.

I keep aiming to take a stand. Maybe this is the year I do it.

Charles Deas is most likely going to Juco. He hasn't de-committed. This kind of stuff happens to most all teams. AU fans should learn to temper their comments until they know the whole story. Keep your eye on the big picture and stop assuming the sky is falling every time something goes wrong. AU will end up somewhere between the low-teens to low 20's in recruiting ranking. We went undefeated in 2004 with teams of that ranking.

5:52 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I haven't heard anything about Deas de-committing. Hoopie is right, though, that grades could be an issue.

5:58 PM

Deas is definitely out. He will most likely not play div 1 football. He'll be draft eligible in a year, maybe two.

I didn't hear anything about him de-committing.

I didn't rule out more grade problems for him. That's a very real concern.

He hasn't decommitted. He doesn't have to. He just can't get in.

Jay, what's the deal with Jerrell Harris? Everyone keeps commenting that he's likely not to sign with Auburn. He hasn't said one word to anybody in any shape or form of media and yet he's not going to Auburn. It started of course at Bamaonline.com. Then it trickled over to the boys at auburnsports.com. Then of course it trickles down to Phillip, and to Charles.

Truth is. Nobody has a clue. That's just the way he wants it.

Also, why don't we go ahead and pull George Baker's offer and give it to Neiko Lipscomb. Who is Baker anyway? Nobody wanted this guy. He's really done nothing to warrant a div 1 scholarship. He's small. He's skinny. He looks like a 9th grader.

9:27 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Jerraud Powers was a short and skinny dude back in the day. Id say he's risen beyond that tag recently.

I wouldn't pull a scholarship offer. It makes Auburn look bad. If Baker is heading to USF, Tuberville will just take Lipscomb and throw him in the mix. They have like 15 DBs now.

I don't have much to add on Jerrell Harris. If Bryan makes a recruiting-related assessment about a kid's intentions, I listen intently. He and Jeffrey (along with Jason Caldwell at ITAT) follow recruiting year-round and know the kids and their handlers.

9:36 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Powers was a muscle bound little hulk right out of high school. He's always been stronger than the majority of the players around him. I'm not sure what the lure is with Baker. He's fast. That's all we really know. He may be spicing up a little drama for signing day. He's most likely not a guy that hurts you or boosts your class. The Lipscomb guy you two are talking about is a taller, rangy DB with some good speed.

By the way, Harris had a chance to make a statement after the AU visit. He acted a tad scorned by the visit. No telling why. He's not headed to Auburn. Trust the guys at AU Rivals on that one.

I know his coach said he was tired of people speaking for him, calling him a "lock" one way or the other. But I don't think that means he's not going to fall into the fly trap at Alabama. Money talks in many ways, guys.

Jay,
Every Bama Neck I know (this does not include All UAT fans, just the Aubcessed) loves to cause disruption in Auburn discussions. I know losing six games in a row to Auburn crushes their self esteem, but does that make BammerNek a better evaluator of Auburn recruiting?

Also, I am not saying the REC is greasing the tracks (only rumored), but do you think CNS may just piss the press off enough that they may drop their fears of retaliation, job security, or boycott of the starving Bama Nation to investigate the rumors? AL.Com does an excellent job of banning Auburn commentary that might question the Tide or CNS, but seems to have the flood gates opened for moronic, idiotic, racial insinuations, and other derogatory commentary from BammerNeks.

Now, Jay. We all know you are trying to do your best to report the Auburn news. You do ok, but do you fear CNS? Are you afraid of losing Bama readership for reporting on Bama bias in the Alabama media? I would just like to know what you think.

I've been on the Auburn beat since the afternoon of 10/23/98, so I've gotten to know damn near every Auburn and Alabama beat writer since then.

I don't really think bias is an issue with the newspaper guys.

I heard that Doug Segrest was a Bammer. Not true.

I heard that Steve Irvine was a Bammer. Not true.

I heard that Steve Kirk was a Bammer. Not true.

I heard that Ian Rapoport was a Bammer. Not true.

The Birmingham guys take most of the heat when it comes to this alleged Bama bias and, honestly, I don't see it. I felt a Bama bias with WNSP and you saw how I reacted to that situation. I'd tell you if I thought a bias existed in the newspapers. I just don't see it.

I pretty much agree with you, Jay. Paul Gattis- he's a different story. Tom Murhpy, although a good guy, a bammer and Tide beat writer that has some serious windshield wipers on.

We have Marshall and Charles as homer beat writers but I have to say I'm proud to have guys like that that are pretty humble about the institutions they love. Other than that, I'm also proud to have guys like the G that aren't homers and report clean news.

So you've been there since Thomas Hawley Tuberville first came into the Auburn scene? Or actually when Bowden exited the scene?

12:56 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I arrived the day Bowden resigned.

I don't consider Phillip Marshall or Charles Goldberg as Auburn homers. I don't think they appreciate you say that, given their long track record of writing both positive and negative things about Auburn, but I won't tell you how to think.

Gayle and I produced a podcast the other day that allegedly is on the Advertiser's site, but I can't find it.

When I do, I'll pass it along.

Jay, Phil Marshall is an Auburn "fan". He just is. He doesn't have as much interest in spinning things into a potentially negative view like you do. When there's nothing going on you guys need to find something.

1:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You arrived the same day Bowden left? Coincidence? Perhaps not. Has anyone actually seen the two of you together at the same time?
Hmm - Jay G TATE, TATEr Tot. It was right there under our noses the whole time, but I have stumbled upon the story of the offseason! You are the Clark Kent to his Superman aren't you?

I was covering Alabama State the day Bowden was fired, so it's not like my first day on the job was 10/23/98. That was the day I was moved to the Auburn beat.

I really don't think PMarsh is a fan. He's a very friendly, caring and generous dude in real life. I think he writes like the man he is.

Me? I'm not as nice and certainly not as caring.

Jay,
Thanks for your reply to my question regarding bias in the Alabama media. However, I am not sure you understood what I was asking. I am not trying to point out homerizem. I have No criticism here regarding a beat writer’s point of view good or bad.

I just don't think that there is a sports journalist in this state that has the cahonies to look into Bama's recruiting practices. Especially the Mobile area!
Bama's MO in the past was to funnel cash through the coaches and other intermediaries. IMHO and the little insight that I have into the past decades of this practice, which was proven to go on in a court (Logan Young), the REC has gone to their old ways. On the day the NCAA’s probation and repeat violator status ended the practice picked up right where it left off. Just a little curious.

Auburn has had problems in the past getting some recruits into school, but somehow Bama recruits seem to squeeze in by the narrowest of margins. The Hoover player is a good example. This matter was resolved in days despite some obvious questions regarding the people involved. While on the other hand the enrollment of two Auburn recruits (from the Mobile area mind you) are held up at the last minute for weeks. There identies are leaked out (a clear violation of their privacy) and impropriety by Auburn is sold all over this state for Bammer consumption.

I think the Bama Nation and their fans really believe Bama is above the rules and CNS and the REC is rubbing it in the noses of the Alabama media and the NCAA. Bama plays with one set of rules while others play by the rules in my opinion.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I think a lot of these alleged "recruiting practices" are phony and, in many cases, completely fabricated.

I've legitimately investigated maybe five recruiting issues in my days at the Advertiser. None led anywhere meaningful. Believe me, I'd break a story wide open if it was true and I had the information.

5:14 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think you would ever be able to break a dirty recruiting story in this state, Jay. That's the poster's point. Those stories will break in other states, where other programs lie. You will see a huge story one day concerning the like of Julio Jones. And it won't surface first in this state.

8:34 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay, can you reference a "phony" recruiting practice that you've investigated? I think you will have an awfully hard time since you cover the Auburn beat.

Mark my words ... an implosion will occur at Bama sometime about the middle of next year. Count on it. You heard it here first.

Death, taxes, and Auburn fans' delusional conspiracy theories about doom descending on Bama. I'm glad to know there are some things you can still count on in this life.

2:09 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That wasn't a conspiracy theory my friend. What it will be is a picture of how ever confident, arrogant, and self serving people (CNS) usually find a way to completely self destruct. Now, you can be all of those things and be sucessful if you repspect people. Nick doesn't even do that. I am telling you now, give him enough time, and he will run himself out. You just think he has pissed everybody off so far. You ain't seen nothin' yet.

Do you guys realize Auburn started or regularly played 23 freshmen? Another thing. Auburn is not going to win the state of Alabama more than 50% of the time. It was too easy with Fran and Shula in state. But the game's a little harder with a dirty salesman in office. No different that anything you've experienced in your own sales organization.

Bama can offer PT and a national championship opportunity. Haven't you read the recruits' comments? They're all starting and they're all going to win a national championship. Just like LSU did.

Best line from that story:

Florida State and Miami can attest. The Seminoles pulled in three Top 5 classes in the past four years, according to Rivals. They barely sneaked into a bowl in 2006 and couldn't finish better than fourth in their division in 2007.

To the guy claiming all this bias everywhere:

If you have that big of a problem with the writers being a homer of a school then either don't read it or take it for what you think it is worth. I have heard (and this is probably a stupid rumor) that Evan Woodberry at least was at one time an alabama fan. I don't care. I like what he writes and I like what he says on WNSP. I think he is honest which is what his job is. I also think all the guys on the rivals sites are homers but that is also their job. If you are subscribing to an Auburn website you don't want to hear how Alabama is working over Auburn in recruiting and how Auburn wasted a scholarship on a long snapper. WNSP is different because all the sponsors are Bammers and Tim Camp is a tool.

For the conspiracy theory against Alabama, they probably aren't true or will never happen. Saban gets the recruits he wants, always has. We're not going up against Mike Shula anymore gentlemen. That being said Tuberville had SOME success against saban at LSU but it was never easy nor will it be against Alabama these next few years.

I don't really care. He's definitely not going to Auburn. That's in Auburn not Opelika necks. WDE and enjoy another 5 years of ready made excuses courtesy of the NCAA.
