News of the day, 2/20
Hey everyone. Due to a scheduling error, I will NOT be covering the R.C. Hatch game because it's not until Wednesday. So it goes.
When I cover R.C. Hatch tomorrow, I'll be sure to provide my usual array of brilliant insight into top Auburn basketball signee Frank Sullivan. The combo guard has won four state titles so far. He earned legitimate recruiting interest from a whole wad of schools before signing with Auburn last year.
Let me get through a few non-Auburn points here.
*Today's picture is in honor of Javier Bardem, who portrays ruthless killer Anton Chigurh in the brilliant film "No Country For Old Men." The Oscars are only five days away. I'm certain that the HOTTIES who are Academy voters know the real stuff and will recognize the year's best film appropriately.
*In other news, Alabama freshman defensive end Jeremy Elder has been arrested for two counts of armed robbery. That's a Class A felony, that will draw more than a decade of jail time if he's convicted, which led fellow Y Guy (and noted financial magnate) Jeff K. to note: "That's not the kind of stuff law enforcement forgets about."
*So I'm at Blockbuster the other day and I want to rent a documentary called "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters." Read the link if you're interested. It won some awards and received three stars from Roger Ebert.
I asked Kid Behind The Counter about the movie. Here's how it goes.
ME: Do you have The King of Kong?
KID: No.
pause
ME: No as in "it's not here right now" or no as in "we never had it?"
pause while Kid eyes me suspiciously
KID: It's not something we'd carry.
ME: Why not?
KID: It's not mainstream enough.
At least he's honest. I went to Best Buy, noted purveyor of non-mainstream material, and picked up the flick for $25. It was a lot of fun. It wasn't that mainstream kind of satisfaction that I'd get from watching Saw 4 from Blockbuster, but it was fulfilling nonetheless. If you'd like to borrow it, we can make that happen.

Javier Bardem was brilliant in No Country. However, I thought the moive as whole was not as good as the individual parts. The pacing in the first 2/3 of the movie was great, but the ending just didn't sustain it. I'm a big fan of the Coen brothers and they did a great job of adapting from the source material (which is a vastly inferior novel). Personally I prefer There Will Be Blood. Daniel Day-Lewis gives the performance of the year. They are both good movies, I just think There Will Be Blood was better.
Get Netflix. The movies are always available (I checked and this one was available), and it's a lot of cheaper than dropping $25 on a flick.
one of the movies nominated, i think, was something along the lines of "the coward who killed jesse james"--the title was too long to commit to memory....given the chance, avoid this movie. very slow, almost pointless--and i love westerns....
I agree that NCFOM slowed down at the end and, in general, was dissatisfying during the final stages.
With that said, I found the final two scenes brilliant in a Barton Fink way.
I don't drop $25 on a movie very often. I had a point to make. I'm sure Wayne Huizenga and the other Blockbuster executives are re-considering their position as a result.
Re: Daniel Day Lewis. Did you see the EW spread on Bardem and Lewis? The dude shows up for the photo shoot but won't submit to an interview. What a dork. Hey, dude, My Left Foot wasn't that great. Really.
Don't know if politics is a safe subject or not, but today, Mrs. Obama said that for the first time in her adult like she is proud of her country.
What in the world does that mean?
The political pundits are going to have a field day with that comment.
And I saw in the paper this morning that the kid from Bama only got 26 bucks!! Probably doesnt seem worth it to him in retrospect.
At least knock over a gas station where you're likely to get a couple of hundred.
I was listening to WMSP this morning, a rarity, and got a good laugh out of it. They were talking about how Saban must be held responsible (to some degree) for seven arrests in 14 months. Yet Tuberville doesn't deserve credit for five arrests in ... six years.
My running list:
02 -- Lemarcus Rowell, DUI and possession (left team)
05 -- Kevin Sears, various DUI stuff
06 -- Montae Pitts, DUI (left team)
06 -- Tray Blackmon, possession and public intox
07 -- King Dunlap, wimpy traffic-ticket arrest
I'm not even sure Dunlap's arrest should count, though it technically was an arrest.
I agree 100% Jay. Whenever I discuss this with my Bammer relatives and friends all they can do it bring up Trey Blackmon. Seriously? The kid was arrested almost two years ago for underage drinking, and served a 5 or 6 game suspension!! Not exactly robbing someone at gunpoint, or getting pulled over with drugs and a loaded (and stolen) gun under the seat, or allegedly assaulting a cop.
Whether it be dumb luck or a concerted effort to recruit "higher character" kids is up for debate, but Tubbs deserves credit for keeping these kids noses clean for the most part.
And before anyone jumps on my comment, I am well aware of what Tubberville SAYS publicily about recruiting character kids. I just dont always trust what he SAYS.
I think the record speaks for itself. I also think it's a major difference in philosophy. Au is about turning boys into men, generally speaking. UA is about winning at all costs. It has not always been that way at UA, but it is today. Alabama will become the new "Miami." It's kind of sad really.
By the way, y'all really have to listen to the radio shows just to hear the new budweiser "real men of genuis" commercial. You'll know it when you hear it. That's all I can say. I can't believe they are getting away with it and that Al Sharpton hadn't sued them yet.
I'm intrigued, though that's not enough to get me to listen to sports-talk radio more than once per month.
It's "Mr. Gansta Rapper Posse Memeber Guy"
McKnight played it about 10 times when they were discussing the UA situation.
"Gold tooth ... check. Large gold medallion ... check. Royalties from record sales ... no check."
Oh man, it's great.
Wasn't Deandre Green in '02? That guy was a stud but it was only a matter of time. I heard he took his skills to the intramural fields of south alabama and whatever half ass semi-pro team mobile had for two months. What a waste.
Julio Jones is the star witness in a merder trial.
Burton Scott was sued today for child support. The mother is a 44 year old woman.
Then of course there is the young fella in the pokey.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring?
But hey Nick, this is how you build a championship team right.
It is what it is. A'ight.
i meant t-town
