Auburn update, 6/18
Hey everyone. The big news at Auburn, of course, is that the football team added a 16th commitment last night. Three players had cast their lot with the Tigers this time last season, so it's clear that things are changing in the recruiting world.
That got me thinking. Is Auburn the only team doing this? A short investigation revealed some interesting trends.
I perused the wonderful Rivals.com commitment database to see how many commitments varios teams have. I included all SEC teams and selected national teams. Keep in mind that this doesn't take into account the quality of these commitments. Also, we all know commitment is different than signee.
What can we learn from this? It's too early to draw meaningful conclusions. It's clear that some programs are getting very serious about assessing kids at their summer camps and pushing for immediate commitments. If the programs scout juniors closely, it makes sense to use that advance scouting to your advantage by earning summer commitments. Then again, it'll be a mess if some of these kids bust as seniors.

I came across this auction yesterday, when it was still active. It ended early this morning. The XTerra that Dwight Schrute bought from Andy Bernard on NBC's hit show "The Office" was up for sale. Included in the auction was a bunch of cool stuff. The car, a 2001 model with 68k miles, went for $10,400. I might have considered that at one point in my life. I'm thinking more along the lines of a Mini Cooper -- and its 30 mpg -- these days.
I've been watching the heck out of the 2008 European Soccer Championships. I haven't mentioned that much because I know many of y'all have this irrational hate toward the game, which is fine. Anyway, the sport makes for some truly awesome photography. Here are a few of my favorites so far.
I don't know what "dank" means in Italian, but I have this feeling it isn't a term of endearment.(AP/Michel Euler)
This is Turkey's Nihat Kahveci, who scored to give his team a 3-2 win against the Czechs to qualify for the quarterfinals. Turkey was down 0-2 with 15 minutes remaining. This was one of the two or three best matches I've ever seen. (AP/Anja Niedringhaus)

Jay the Euro's have been great so far. Some great performances by the Dutch thus far. However, given their propensity for self-destructing in the big tournaments I'd have to say that this may be the best we see from them. Going by past history we are likely to see Italy vs. Germany in the finals. Personally I have been backing Portugal because Ronaldo can be sublime when he wants to impose his will. It's too bad they don't have a better striker because they have the best wing players.
The Dutch defense isn't exactly strong, but it doesn't take much defense to offset 4 goals per game.
I have a hard time getting behind Italy and Germany. I absolutely hate Ballack ... and Grosso's dive in the 06 World Cup vs. Australia was disgusting.
I'm really hoping NED can make this happen.
Yeah they both tend to play a negative brand of soccer, especially the Italians. I was merely stating that if you've seen a few of these you notice that Italy tends to start slowly, but then always ends up in the finals. Basically these tournaments have a sort of "March Madness" kind of feel where most of your upsets are in the opening rounds, but as it goes along the Kentuckys (Germany) and Dukes (Italy) tend to win out. Really this should be Spain's to lose based on talent. Since they tend to choke in the big moments though I'm gonna stick with my prediction.
not even 24 hours goes by and we already have an 'anonymous' poster? :) sweet. glad the universe has returned to normal. although i didn't mind the other format. i'm easy going like that.
speaking of 24 hours, have we not had a commitment today? what gives?
i know absolutely nothing about this world cup soccer thing. i had a blast playing it in high school um,....12 years ago. i do like the pics you've posted jay. funny stuff.
There were a lot of things I couldn't do with the old format. Pictures were problematic, commenters had to be registered, I couldn't embed graphics and several HOTTIES said the new blog was difficult to find.
All remedied here.
Is one of Vandy's 3 commits another Mr. Football from Alabama that played QB in high school?
Just curious because they'll field 2 according to the depth chart this year.
Vandy: Stealing everybody's recruits
Gotta watch out for the 'Dores!
:-)
I deleted that last one because I ca'nt spel or tipe.
So, we are back over here now? Excellent! Congrats JG. All those sit-ins and protests really paid off. Me ... I am looking forward to many colorful arguments with a dude named anonymous.
Thanks JG for the compliment on my statistical work. I really put a lot of hard work into that stuff.
I was so disappointed that Anonymous didn't make the migration to the Advertiser's official site.
I'm glad to see her back.
criminy, just lost my main computer. currently working on an old slow one. had to renew my identity--like pulling teeth. press on brothers!
