Practice One (8/2)

Hey everyone. It was a hot one out there today. Practice ran from 9:15ish to just after noon. That's a long workout by anyone's standards ... and among the longest I've seen at Auburn.

Almost everyone was clad in shorts and helmets. WR Mario Fannin was the only guy in shoulder pads. The brace that protects his surgically repaired left shoulder is attached to his shoulder pads, so he has to wear them.

********************
Here were the elements that stood out to me:
  • WR Chris Slaughter isn't getting much thicker. He still looks like a Pixie Stick. He's listed at 6-foot-3 and 179 pounds.

  • OC Tony Franklin doesn't mingle with the offense during drills. He stands on the sideline and rarely engages with players in real time. He generally waits until after the drill to dispense guidance. That is a major break with the way Al Borges handled things.

  • Watching him call plays is interesting. He makes a call and three assistants (sometimes two assistants and an idle offensive lineman) will turn the call into a sequence of signals that communicates the call to the players on the field. You saw this in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. What you haven't seen is how Franklin keeps calling the play ... even as the three amigos flash the signals. He probably repeats each call five times. I'm assuming that's to avoid any chance of miscommunication.

  • Franklin to QB Kodi Burns: "Be faster, Kodi. Be faster, Kodi."

  • Neiko Lipscomb Thorpe changed his name this summer. He explained Saturday that he took his mom's maiden name all along because, well, that's what she used on the birth certificate. His father's last name is Thorpe. His mother's last name is Thorpe. They've been married. Neiko decided this summer to bring his last name in line with the rest of his family. ``Once the paperwork came through — I switched my social security number over, got a new birth certificate — then I started telling people here," he said.

  • OG Chaz Ramsey was not at practice. Coach Tommy Tuberville said Ramsey will be "off and on with what he's going to do." Ramsey, a presumed starter, underwent back surgery during the offseason and clearly isn't ready for full-time contact just yet.

  • Several players spent some or all of their day on an exercise bike: S T'Sharvan Bell (broken foot), WR Justin Albert (knee), DE Antonio Coleman (hamstring), DT Tez Doolittle (hamstring) and S DeRon Furr, who was injured during a early-practice fracas. He seemed fine after practice.

  • Assistant coach Eddie Gran to a mass of players on the sideline: "Everybody echoes the formation. Open your mouth and help your teammates."

  • Franklin makes players remove helmets during breaks.

  • Tuberville said freshman DE Andre Wadley, who was hospitalized last month, is undergoing rehabilitation off the field. That's why Wadley didn't report and didn't attend Saturday's practice. ``He probably won't do anything in two-a-days. He'll start school, and we'll bring him along slow," Tuberville said.

I eased over to Fan Day for a few minutes. The crowd was as big as ever. The line for Tuberville was routed through the lower-level tunnels this year, which alleviated a lot of the clutter that kept me off the floor in past years.

That's why it seems more desolate when looking at the picture below. There are hundreds of people waiting in line out of sight. You can see them snaking out of the door at top left. DeRon Furr signs an autograph below.

Much was made about Chris Todd's arm being back to near full strength. What were your impressions?

You didn't go into any detail about the "fracas" involving Furr, was there just not much to it?

Inspirational quotes by Raven Gray...

"I came in a five-star player and I'm expecting to get a lot of reps," said Gray. "I just want everyone to bond together. I want them to welcome me in because everybody has been kind of spaced out.

"If we're going to go to Atlanta, we have to be a team."

With John (his older brother who died of a gunshot wound 8 months ago) gone, Gray understands more than ever the importance of being part of a brotherhood.

I thought Todd looked basically the same as he did five months ago. Esteemed O-A News ace Collin Mickle disagreed and added that we really can't make legit assessments until next week ... when we can see if Todd's arm can handle the repetitions.

I didn't get a good look at the Furr situation, though the fracas occurred during a defense-only drill. There was a mound of people involved. Typical practice stuff.

Raven Gray? I didn't see much of him and didn't talk with him.

(So many players are made available concurrently that each reporter can't get to every single guy every single day.)

Slaughter. Does he really care about football? The guy has done nothing positive since his arrival. The coaches have nothing but doubts about his work ethic and desire. What a waste thus far.

Jay, I saw some film of Kodi and Todd today. Todd looks like a QB. Kodi looks a bit confused about what to do with his feet. I see Franklin's got him doing "happy feet". But his concentration on "happy feet" is evident as he totally lets it go upon throwing the ball. He's not using his feet to throw the ball in other words.

Todd has smooth technique on his throws. He also had some zip on the ball. The passes were on the money.

Still, Kodi looks much improved from last year just based on 5 minutes of film.

Todd made some really nice touch throws in 7-on-7 late. I thought he looked average at best before that.

Is is the first day of practice. I'll give them some time. Even Josh Beckett doesn't look like an ace on Day One ...

mm hmm: I am guessing that the film you saw was the one on rivals. If they would have shown Todd doing that same drill than you would have seen him do the exact same thing with his feet. See sometimes at a football practice coaches will have players do drills that focus on one certain thing, in the case of the drill you were referring to they were working on "happy feet." Your post is no different than watching 3 minutes of a kids high school highlight tape and proclaiming him a future hiesman candidate. My whole point being that you cannot come to such a definate conclusion (Burns doesn't use his feet to throw the ball) after watching Burns for a total of 30 seconds throwing the ball in the same drill. When they show video of him in a scrimmage not using his feet, than I will make sure to apologize to you

Anon, it's really not that big of a deal. But I certainly didn't see the same thing out of Todd on the film. You must have been at practice?

To the general argument: It's hard to compare the mechanics of a screen pass to a lob pass. Two completely different throws. They are as different as a fast ball and a curve.

9:19 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bad analogy Phrred. Fastballs and curves are to be thrown the same way. Only a subtle difference.

9:39 PM
Blogger ADP said...

Yeah, the same as in over your shoulder. But the grip, wrist, and elbow movements are different. But you are right, it was a bad analogy. I was struggling to come up with one. The point is they are different throws in football and you can't compare Todd's screen throws with Kodi's 15 yard lobs. Agreed?

Jay G ... good article today. Albert is the kind of kid you want to see succeed. He fits the MO at AU. I hope it works out for him.

Pixie sticks ... watch out for those tall thin guys. They can be tougher than they look. You know, he may be great one day soon, but I honestly can't remember what all the hype was about. Can you refresh my memory?

Who is comparing lobs and screens???

The Slaughter hype was/is based on his jumping ability and general instincts and shiftiness.

The problem is that he doesn't always seem in tune with what's happening on the field. I saw him shaking his head a lot yesterday, like he was mad, and it's the first day. He communicates with teammates less often than most.

Maybe I just saw him at the most inopportune times. I'll keep an eye out for him this coming week ...

Phred, watch the "film" again. It's one thing to be a fan and another to be a fanatic. Just like saying Fannin is a Heisman possibility. The closest thing to Hesiman on AU's squad is Lester who will never see the ball enough.

Burns is a work in progress and anybody that's been around enough can see that. Those fundamentals mean something and a lack of those skills, and they are skills, can hurt your team from that position. Trotter is already better at any throw on the field than Kodi is. It's all a matter of time until Trotter and Cotton are doing real battle for the starting position.

Good thing we are jumping into this new offense. Because with a lack of a solid QB this offense offers plenty of space for a QB to run and/or find a wide open gap for an open receiver.

Slaughter's not going to do much damage from the sidelines. His coaches won't play him without any work ethic. Doesn't matter how high he can jump or how good his hands are. You know Tuberville by now. We've had plenty of great athletes on teams years past that never saw daylight because they were always in the "doghouse".

I'd say Mario Fannin was a great exception last season after the costly fumbles. The reason they stand by him is not his obvious athleticism, but his work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to help the team. Most of his comments point to his character outlined in 'team' and not 'I'.

Jay:

Tristan Davis. He admits himself that a knock on his capabilities is that he's not shifty hips enough. He says it's his fault because he's never shown it since he's always run past people for TDs. We've seen him do it. Can't forget UK 2005.

Now. This is one of those Auburn things to me. One of those things where it makes too much sense to play somebody that can obviously, from a fan's point of view, score TDs. What's wrong with a B line to the endzone? The guy runs a 4.3. He's world class.

I think this changing of the guard, Tony Franklin, is what it takes to get guys like Tristan on the field. I'm willing to bet this season sends him into a first day NFL draft status.

mm hmm ... you need to watch it again. Apparently, you didn't understand what you were looking at. Your point is your point and mine is mine. AGAIN, for the record, I did not say that Mario would be a heisman candidate. Also, I am not a fanatic. I just don't care for weak arguments.

Then why make them consistently?

"You'll laugh and say I'm weird, but I'm looking for big things out of Mario Fannin. Maybe eventually a little gold statue of a football player in a leather helmet. I think he's that good."

Spin that?

They key words, mm hmm, were "maybe" and "eventually".

I've had enough of idiots. Phred hereby resigns. Adios Jay, Ron, Hoopie and Crud. It's been real.

Oh stop. They weren't being mean. They were just being argumentative, which is a good thing. Defend your position. I haven't seen anything out of reason to this point ...

You're welcome here, Phred.

I think he's bluffing.

Phred, don't be so sensitive. We can change the subject to something more comfortable if you like. Like check out the pics of Christian Thompson who looks like a college senior. I was thinking Savage was rather ripped.

That's the thing Jay G. I don't have a position. I am not defending anything. I'm not here to argue. I make a comment or two or I ask a question. Then invariably I get into an argument about "definite" things with someone who spells the word with an 'a'. If I wanted to have stupid arguments, I would post on the Rivals board.

I'll be around, because I get a lot of good information here, but I'll mostly just be reading from this point on.

4:38 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

The arguments here generally are less stupid than what I see on The Boards.

Just sayin'. You've been here for a long time, you have a home here at the HABOTN, and I don't think you should leave over some pretty innocuous stuff.

That's my final plea.

Carry on.

5:04 PM
Blogger ADP said...

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood. And you are right, we usually don't have stupid arguments here. I just have heard enough about Burns and Todd being "not solid" enough, you know? The dudes both hold the title of "Mr. Football" in their respective states. Not too shabby. I think they will both do just fine. How solid do you have to be to be as solid as Cox? That's a rhetorical question.

My final comment about Fannin is this: you don't have to be a genius to recognize a great athlete when you see one. Whether or not he is a record breaker remains to be seen. But there is NO DOUBT that he is great athlete. It just so happens that I think he will do some remarkable things in his SECOND year on the field.

That's it. Sorry folks, I can get a little bent out of shape from time to time. Peace ... out.
