The Head Coach speaks, 9/23

Hey everyone. It's been another morning and early afternoon chock full-o information, much of it tangential.

Anyway, here is a summary of Tommy Tuberville's press conference.

I'll be posting a new video starring everyone's favorite quarterback around 2:45 p.m. ... better make that 3 p.m.
  • On the team's offensive struggles: "I'm sure there are some people who, now that we've lost a game, wonder why we're doing this. There's no doubt that the wave of the future is what we're doing on offense. I like the direction we're heading. I like the way recruiting is headed. This is our best ever."

  • Antonio Coleman said earlier in the day that Auburn's defense was misaligned "90 percent" of the time against LSU, which seemed pretty high to me. Tuberville (indirectly) refuted that claim: "We're talking about 5 of 6 times that we didn't get lined up. It really wasn't anything they did. We didn't react quickly enough. That didn't get us beat."

  • On Tennessee: "Their team is a lot like ours -- changing offenses, changing coordinators, new quarterback."

  • On Tony Franklin's willingness to admit faults: "Some guys like to be accountable and take blame. He's the same way with players. We're not going to hide. There's a lot more to it than just calling plays; you've got to know people*."

*He was referring to opposing coaches there.

  • On Brad Lester, who suffered a knee injury Saturday: "He was out there running around today. No damage. He's just a little sore. He should be ready to go (this weekend)."

  • On Tristan Davis, who was knocked out Saturday: "Still having headaches. He's not going to hit until Saturday."

  • On not wallowing in sorrow after the LSU loss: "You have to move on each week. The next Saturday comes up quickly."

  • On how this weekend's game against Tennessee will be physical: "They're all physical. This game will be physical. Then we go play a physical game next week."

  • Tuberville was asked to prognosticate the Georgia-Alabama game this weekend. He declined. I can't believe someone asked the question. That'd be like ... asking Les Miles about the billion-dollar government bailout.

JGT does BLester have a nickname? If not then I nominate "Timex". 2 weeks in a row, the guy has taken a lickin' and he keeps coming back.

Oh boy,

"There's no doubt this is the wave of the future is what we're doing on offense. I think the direction we're heading. I like the way recruiting is headed. This is out best ever."

This should spark some interesting comments!

Coleman's not the only player that said that. Everyone with a mic said that. We're not going to start rolling Tubs' words in gold now are we? He'd rather be fishing.

Anon, I guess we won't know for a couple years...

But our recruits sure are creating some sparkling numbers this year. Most D1 recruits should be stars at the high school level. But we have some super stars from their various leagues. We'll see how it all translates.

Sorry about those silly word errors there. I was spitting this out as quickly as possible.

The item now reads correctly.

I haven't heard a legit nick for No. 1 yet, but I refer to him privately as "Smilin' Singin' Sam" for reasons that aren't clear ... even to me.

He's just a very happy dude.

Whatever Tub's eventual fate...the main thing I've always wanted is that Auburn field a CLEAN and competitive program...everything above that is gravy. On that Tub, has had a good run.

I caught some of this on ESPN U on my lunch break.

Tub explaining defensive assignments and gap responsibilities was pretty funny. It seems like in mid explaination that he realized he was talking over the audiences head and just stopped.

"Tuberville was asked to prognosticate the Georgia-Alabama game this weekend."

Out of curiosity, who asked him?

Someone affiliated with the radio medium.

I'm only half kidding, so I won't out the guy in question.

Jay G., this is more for human interest than football knowledge, but I am curious what the guys who are seniors and won't be going pro are planning to do after graduation.

Maybe for some Thursday filler?

Coach Tubs excited about these next yr recruits. I would feel good about that if you could believe everything that comes out of Tubs mouth. Here are some of Tubs quotes from media days.

If it was today, it would be Cody Burns. We have Chris Todd that went through spring practice about 80%. He really wasn't a hundred percent in terms of injuries. He's ready to go now. I think we're going to have a lot of competition going into two a days. After about 10, 12 days, we will pick a starter. We will have somebody as our starting quarterback

That doesn't mean we won't play several more quarterbacks because in this offense that we've gone to, which is totally different, you have to have more than one quarterback.

We will still run the football. You got to be able to run it to win. You got to be able to control it. We do have two good runningbacks in Ben Tate and Brad Lester. But your quarterback now is also considered a runningback. That's the reason, as we said earlier, we'll probably use several, but only have one starter.

I may be wrong, but I read that more as you need multiple QB's ready because of the chance one could get banged around.

Like I said, I could be wrong.

Plus that comment made in August doesn't apply once you've played a game or two and see what you got and what the coaches feel is best for the team.

Coaches say things all the time and change their mind all the time. It's not just Tub.

Wareaglelerk you really have been defending the head coach. Please read again.

But your quarterback now is also considered a runningback. That's the reason, as we said earlier, we'll probably use several, but only have one starter.

Everbody knows Todd isn't a runningback so interpret as you wish.
He also said they would be running plays out of the I.

Wareaglelerk said "Coaches say things all the time and change their mind all the time."
Yes lets just hope he doesn't change his mind at some point in time about those next yr recruits.

Any update on Slaughter?

I think Sgt. Slaughter is going to be out a few more games.

Jay,
You know it's really funny that no one has looked at this game from a positive standpoint:

1. we installed a totally new offensive system adn tried to cader the players to it.
2. we played against prolly one of the nations Top Defenses and only gave up what 2-3 sacks, no holdhold calls adn only one illegal procedure penalty.
3. AU was within 1:30 seconds of winning this game, but mistakes happened, shanked punt, unable to know out a few first downs when needed and no defensive stops.
4. Remember when UF went to the CUM spread and they lost 3-4 games his first year, then turned it around in year two.
5. Chris Todd for all the negative critisium has really gotten better after only 4 starts in the SEC, I think he's done as well as can be expected due to his injury.
6. It's only one lost and not the end of the world. Don't think Auburn will face another defense as good as LSU was, period.
7. I think AU gets better from here and uses this game to build on as they held their own with a much more talented team and almost won....I agree with CTF & CTT we are very close, just need to get the right playmakers in the game to make plays.

Not defending the coach. Just giving my opinion.

Everyone reads something different into every little thing that coaches and players say. Truth is, sometimes they are telling the truth, sometimes they are just answering to get the question out of the way.

Todd isn't best suited for the read option and defenses have used that against us all year long.

I only remember him saying we'd run some I-formation stuff before the game vs LSU.

I'd also like to point out that Florida is ranked 10th among SEC teams in passing offense.

How weird is that?

I agree that coaches, under no circumstances, should have the right to change their minds based on events as they unfold. They should stick stubbornly to something they said in August no matter what happens. Do what?

Interbrand, a market research firm, announced the world's top 25 global brands yesterday.

I'm really disappointed that HABOTN wasn't on the list.

In case you were wondering: Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, GE and Nokia (??) rounded out the top 5.

4:42 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

what, no HABOTN? what an outrage.

that's my fault dude. i never came through with that Gameday sign. needed that extra little push.

Just say you're sorry ... even if you don't think you did anything wrong.

It works for Tony Franklin.

I'm headed home from Auburn.

Nothing more to see here today.

"the reason why the HABOTN didn't out-rank Coca-Cola as one of the world's leading brands is all on me. it's my fault.

it was stupid of my not to make the HABOTN Gameday sign after all these years of believing in the power of Gameday signs. again, it was stupid and i am trying to be un-stupid."
