Some early comments from Tuberville

The Head Coach just finished his Sunday afternoon chat with reporters.

Here are a few quotes I found interesting:
  • On pressure last night: "I never really felt threatened last night of losing that ballgame once we got ahead 3-0."

  • On his hopes for the offense: "We're going to break out one of these days and it'll start clicking."

  • On Chris Todd: "I thought Chris Todd played average. I liked the way he went through some reads. He didn't throw any interceptions."

  • On why Kodi Burns didn't play: "I thought putting him in a situation where our back was to the wall a lot in certain situations -- I wanted it to be a positive note when he goes back in the game. He was ready to go. He's a team player. And we've got to find the right situation."

  • On Burns again: "His time is going to come. He's being patient and just waiting for his turn."

  • On grading the team: "We get an A+ for winning."

  • Auburn's defense missed only five tackles.

  • Players of the week: Montez Billings (offense), Tray Blackmon (defense), Jerraud Powers (special teams), Michael Gibson (scout team offense), Wade Christopher (scout team defense).

A+ my butt, Tubs. better than 2-3, though. it's sad such a horrible offensive showing takes away from just how dominant the D was. walt mcfadden i thought really grew up last nite.

Our o line is in trouble against LSU's d line, I fear.

Not so sure on that one. Auburn's OL is generally pretty good.

Last night? Issues.

4:16 PM

Yeah, I mean if the o line plays like that again.

Hopefully, both tackles won't look so lost like they did last night.

Ziemba played his worst game last night.

I'm still not sure about the Bosley experiement at tackle.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Tuberville said Bosley played well last night.

I didn't see that part of the game, I guess.

4:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bosley seemed to struggle. I think the coaches realized that as well as they ran to Ziemba's side the majority of the time.

Hopefully last night will be the last time we see "3-2", but if we play like that the next two weeks that'll be our record.

After 10 years, I'm used to the Tub spin when talking about games, but it seems to have gotten worse this year.

Maybe it's just me.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Nah, he's spinning at approximately the same rate as previous seasons.

You may not have noticed as much because the team's situation didn't seem dire.

I'm a CTT fan but I can never un derstand how every off-season he talks about doing more on offense then when the offense struggles he says they played it conservative to not lose it for the defense because they were playing so well. Couldn't the D play even better if they actually had a comfortable lead?

do we have an official count of how many times we had 3rd & 10+ last nite? it seemed like every possession, didn't it?

Ok guys I was at the game last night and here are my thoughts.

1. Running Backs- Where have they gone? They are fumbling way to much this year. Tate fumbled last night when he didn’t switch hands, which is running back 101. Inside the five we can’t score what is up with that?

2. Defense – What can you say really. One of the best efforts I have seen in awhile. They were on the field 90% of the game. The offense should take them out to dinner. These guys never backed down. We were in their backfield all day long. The question is how long we can ride these guys like this. They can’t keep it up all year long. At some point they are going to wear down. If only these guys could play offense, which isn’t a bad idea right now.

3. Tubbs- Look, like everyone has said he is a smart guy. He never sells his coaches out to the media. But you know today he is passing out some ass chewing’s, which offensively they deserve. I agree Tubbs is still in control. Some people try to make it seem that the reason we are so vanilla is because Tubbs overrides Franklin. I don’t see that. But we all know changes need to happen, its week four already. If I hear a win is a win quote again from Tubbs I am going to vomit on my Pat Dye commemorative plate.

4. Kicking Game – Does Byrum have a sophomore slump? He has missed 3 field goals in 3 games and his kick offs are terrible. Do we need to go into the student body to find another kick off specialist.

5. Todd – Look I have stuck by Todd as others have jumped ship. But last night he looked horrific. He did not seem to have a handle on what was going on. He runs like he has a wooden leg. His passes don’t have any zip. He only looks for the 2 and 3 yard routes. He panics in the pocket a lot. Things have got to change. The whole reason for bringing him here was he knew the offensive playbook, maybe he only read the Cliff Notes. I have seen General Custard make better decisions. I don’t know. Maybe he had a horrific childhood experience on a dairy farm and the cow bells got to him. Who knows, but it appears he will be our starter against the defending national champs. Somewhere in America at your local food mart, working at checkout counter number three, former QB Daniel Cobb is having a good laugh.

6. Franklin – Look I like the guy personally. He at least admits he sucks. However, we as Auburn fans will only take his “we stink” answers for so long. Its like, ok, well if we stink, why did we hire you. At Troy he never had this media scrutiny, now he is searching for answers. Many people argue Tubbs has not given him the full reins of the offense. Well who ever is making the calls needs shock therapy. Toss sweeps, handoff after hand off, three yard Our guys evidently can’t keep up. We have had all summer to work out the kinks, including three games. I am curious to check Franklin’s checking account Monday to see if Lowder deposited his pay check.

7. Offensive Line – I know the guys are learning the new spread offense. However, we seem to get killed by penalties week after week. Its always Bosley and Ziemba. I think Ziemba hates this ballet type offense, he is an I-formation, kick you in the &%$ type blocker. We are not blowing anybody away that’s for sure.

8. Tommy Trott – He will easily go down as the most underutilized player in Auburn history. The man is wide open every play. He is waving his hands around like he is directing air traffic. Right now his picture is going on the back of a milk carton somewhere. If they don’t plan on using him his picture should be removed from the program. Let’s sit Chris Todd down and introduce him to Tommy Trott…. Chris meet Tommy ….he’s on your team….he is wide open on 98% of your passes.

9. Game Review – I mean 3-2, you know ESPN just loved that. The coaches just spin it and spin it. You should have seen the somber crowd leaving last night. Auburn fans leaving quiet and disgusted, MSU fans bewildered wondering how they lost a game 3-2. IT was kind of like when you get drunk and hook up with an ugly chick. It happened, you move on but you are not proud of it. That’s pretty much the summary of the game. The coaches review show this week should be shortened to 2 minutes based on the number of highlights.

10. Next week – Well maybe we need to name our new spread offense before the national champs get here next week. Spread with training wheels? Mini-Spread? Get our money back Spread? Paging Al Borges Spread? Anyway you know LSU won’t let us win 3-2, think about rowdy Cajuns who have had 2 hurricanes with no power, whew. Not a pretty site. We better make changes fast. I say we play good defense and punt on 1st down.

Well War Eagle… prediction for next weeks game, big offensive output by both Tigers……Auburn 5 LSU 3…..

jay, in light of ctf's post game comments, do you think franklin is capable of objectively evaluating the qb issue, i.e. is he putting auburn's best interest ahead of loyalty to a kid that he's known for umpteen years?

Sorry I am new to this blogging thing, used to in the old days you just called in on the radio show and vented. I wrote the long past, didnt know how to list my name. I will list my name now.

Jay i have three questions:

1.) What ever happened to Phil Snow? I miss his 1980's locker room review show, he was always brutallu honest, plus he rocked many a mean sweater vest.

2.) On the call in show why do they even put a position coach on there to ask questions. My wife and I die laughing when Burt from Ecletic calls in asking Coach Nall why are defensive did a certain formation. The best is Coach Willis, he basically grunts and grumbles. I would not want to piss a man off who recently roamed NFL Sidelines...

3.) Can we please get a new Golden Flake commercial for Coach Tuber ville. He is wearing a denim, yes, denim, golden flake shirt trying to coax Fred Beasley into the endzone. Beasley, Montgomery native, played for Bowden.

Ok I am going to go for a minute, I have to watch Tee Martin search for adjectives he can prounounce on that CSS Sunday football show.

As far as CTF being able to objectively quantify the quarterbacks ... I really don't know. I haven't been able to see practice in more than a month now.

I'm not sure Burns is the world's best quarterback when it comes to running the play that's called. He tends to freelance. That is not something CTF appreciates.

And, bud, I haven't seen or heard from Phil Snow in a really long time.

I'll ask Jeff Shearer the next time I see him.

Newsflash - if we are going to "break out" it had better be Saturday night at 6:45.

Why are we in such panic mode. we have no clue how this team will play next week against LSU... listen everygame is a game each week of its own, we are playing at home, at night and that gives us a shot.... with that D we will be in every game....listen LSU has to beat that TEAM if we don't beat ourselves we will be in the game i assure you.
We are 3-0 and still yet to play a complete game... this week i have a feeling we do.

Great post anonymous aka alex richards! That is worthy of the HABOTN comment Hall of Fame.

What scares me most is that all week long CTT kept saying how great practices were. Did we forget how to play on game day? They should have full contact practices with Todd so he isn't gun shy in the real games.

I hope you are right. We are due a game where we play all 4 quarters on both sides of the ball.

I'm a little gun shy having recently been called a homer by another homer, but I want to believe that you all are right. I hope so. So far, we have looked like the bad news bears or ... terrible tony's tinkerbells.

its a different week, we will get bashed on radio and in the paper. All we can hope for is some of Tubbs big game mojo and a stifling defense. Normally these games are close due to the both sides having top defenses. But we have said that the last two years at Georgia as well...mmmm. So we will see, I have purged all of my I am now focused on this week. So I am optimistic..

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

With Muschamp gone, you may not have to worry about the annual UGA Egg-Lay that had become all the rage.

I think AUnMobile is right on.

Each game is its own story. Do I think LSU should be more than a 2-point favorite? You bet. Still, I think Auburn's defense is elite.

With an elite defense and an offense that learns to be average, Auburn can get to Atlanta.

Until that offense learns to be average and stop undermining its good work all the time, I have no idea what to expect week to week.

Do we open the offense up this week and see what we can do...or do we go into a shell, just try to protect the ball and hope the D sets us up in good position and hope for the best?

9:41 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Since CTF said he'll be paring down the playbook this week, I'd say they won't be "opening it up," no.

I don't think we are running more than 8 plays anyway, I can't see us limiting it that much.

The mistakes all seem to be mental (penalties/fumbles) and in play calling.
