Today's MCP* update

It's Sunday. It's 6 o'clock. Practice has ended. Offensive coordinator Tony Franklin again has admitted his failures, shortcomings and struggles before a live studio audience.

I like him personally. I think this offense is going to become league average one of these days. One day, perhaps a year from now, it could be above average.

With that said, attending Franklin's Sunday interview sessions is The Best Thing I Hear All Week. He was on his game Saturday (calling himself a "dumbass" after the game), but Franklin actually took things to a new level Sunday.

TONY FRANKLIN SPEAKS:
  • Franklin says Chris Todd was "perfect" on 27 of 28 plays prior to Kodi being subbed in. So why did Burns replace Todd during the first half: "Because that was what the head coach wanted to do. He wanted to bring him in. We had only scored seven points – we had scored seven and the defense had scored seven."

  • On the fans booing: "Well, they should. Hell, if I was them, I'd boo. I'd boo me. I'd be angry. Everybody's expectations were high. My expectations were high. Hell, if I was a paying fan I'd be pissed. This product has not been good, and it was my product. I don't blame them for being upset. I don't take it personal. When they said how wonderful you were, I didn't take that personal because I knew it wasn't true. I said all along that I wasn't very smart and y'all thought I was joking. Now you know. It's pretty true."

  • On why Kodi isn't the No. 1 guy: "It's one of those things that in practice he does it and in games he doesn't. Flip the lights on, you've got to do what you do in practice. He's been pretty good. He's gotten a lot better. He had gotten so much better in the spring, and in the summer he got better. It's just when the lights have flipped on, he's gone through one progression and taken off and run. I think he gets caught up in the enthusiasm and the hoo-rah and everybody is `Kodi, Kodi, Kodi,' and the adrenaline takes over. You can't let it happen."

  • On why the team doesn't play at a faster tempo: "We’ve never played at the tempo. We don’t understand tempo, yet. We think we do, but we don’t have a clue. We’re not playing as fast. We don’t understand what it means to play fast. We think we do, but we don’t. We still struggle with the snap count. So, it’s challenging to play at the tempo when you struggle with the snap count. We only have one (tempo), so it shouldn’t be that difficult to learn. But we struggle with it for some reason."

Jay, I'm sure he probably was perfect in terms of knowing what to do and where to go. But that's only half of it. The other half is owned by Kodi. So the offense will outright suck through the rest of the year. Here's why.
That crappy running scheme DOES NOT WORK in the SEC.

PP,
I for one am tired of the MCP by CTF. Its time to let the playmakers play. Its obivious that KB is the better QB to start right now. Why not give it a shot or is it gonna take a few int's on the lollipops that CT throws for CTF to finally realize he cannot make those throws in the SEC against these Defenses.....

Tuberville -

"I keep up with what they're doing as far as down and distance," he said. "They don't ask me which play to run. I might suggest a run or a pass, you've got four downs, we're not going to kick the field, we're going to go for fourth down, be more conservative, turn it loose. I'll tell them to throw it deep.

"They watch a lot more film than I do. They know tendencies and are able to make a lot more decisions based on what they feel about the personnel. It's not just alignments. You want to attack certain people. I try to help them during the game."

This is why Alabama is in a nice position right now. Being a head coach isn't a Sunday stroll in the park. It ain't a city council meeting either.

"The Best Part: Franklin says Chris Todd was "perfect" on 27 of 28 plays prior to Kodi being subbed in."

Imagine the offensive juggernaut Auburn will be when the rest of the team plays as "perfect" as Todd!

I'm hoping the one play he wasn't perfect on was the sideline throw on the 1st drive that he threw about 2 miles into the air and way beyond the sideline.

We have to get some harmony on offense otherwise we'll become the team that put Vandy on the map much like we were the team that put South Florida on the map last year.

What in thw world is Tony talking about???? He can't seriously be that unintelligent? They guy can't articulate what he wants to say. Who at that age and that level can't communicate with a microphone and a speaker? Is it supposed to be funny.

My name is Will Crudup and I admit that I can't understand the fragments that are coming out of Tony Franklin's mouth. Is it me?

Jay, did Franklin really say:

"I said all along that I wasn't very smart and y'all thought I was joking. Now you know. It's pretty true."

So Franklin is telling the world that the Auburn University football team hires dumb people?

The players are playing for a dumb coach? The players are busting their tails in practice and some being getting injured in games for a dumb coach?

Tuberville needs to put a gag order on Franklin before he embarasses the team anymore.

I have to believe that Tubs thinks Kodi should be playing. I remember when all the fans wanted Jason Campbell to play and they kept playing Daniel Cobb. Tubs was always quick to publicly criticize Campbell, I remember one game Campbell subbed in and did pretty well, Tubs said when he was in there they basically ran a high school offense because that's all Campbell could run. You don't get those same type of statements against Kodi from Tubs.

Sweet baby Jesus, my skull is about to explode.

Remember the big complaint about Borges' offense? One of the knocks was that the playbook was as thick as the Sunday edition of the New York Times...yet, he was able to install that offense his first year (2004) and we were flawless.

Now comes Franklin, the man who apparently shaves with a rusted Lady Bic and has the worst hair I've seen since Donald Trump, with his easy to learn "Tony Franklin System by Tony Franklin". His offense is supposed to be easy. It's simplicity makes it great for everyone--from Jr. High through college--yet we're abysmal.

But it's more than that. It is the playcalling. I trusted Borgy to make the high percentage play, to help us burn the clock, to have us prepared, and TO MANAGE THE GAME. I don't trust Franklin's judgement. The spread CAN work. See Texas, OU, Florida. But Franklin is not a good/decent/fair stategist. He certainly is a poor teacher.

You can buy "THE TONY FRANKLIN SYSTEM" for only $3000.00.

Tubs should've bought "Sweatin' to the Oldies" volume 1 and 2 by Richard Simmons and had the team watch that all Spring and Summer. I guarantee you our offensive production would be about the same. But at least we'd have a better penchant for interior decorating and a new found love for spandex.

Just sayin.

War Eagle, anyway.

he sounds like a bumbling idiot. he just says the same phrase over and over. to quote a great movie:

"Coach Franklin (Mr Madison), What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything that could even remotely be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

News. This IS a high school offense and Kodi apparently can't run it. "We've never run the tempo." We didn't run the fast tempo in Spring practice or Fall camp?

Jay? Answers? Did Auburn not run a fast temp spread offense in Fall camp?

The tempo I saw in two-a-days was faster than this, no doubt.

All the stopping and starting before the snap is ... new to me.

Jay can you ask CTT or CTF why Tubby says it was "mutual decision" to play Kodi and Franklin says the head coach made the decision to put Kodi in? The Franklin post-game insights are the highlight of my AU gameday now. Much more entertaining then the "Franklin Spread."

JGT,

Can you ask CTF this: why do you run the zone play with Tate and Todd? It almost never gets anything. JGT, if you have a chance to listen to the commentators on the CBS telecast, the color analyst kept pointing out that the zone read play ONLY works when the QB is a threat too. They showed that Tenn only had to key on Tate and always stuffed the play. Why doesn't CTF, the OC see that will not work?

I still think the offensive line coach is the problem. I honestly think the guy likes to stir the pot and the head coach has been with him so long he laps up everything the guy says.

Kodi Burns, why he is over 7 feet tall, and can kill the English by the hundreds by shooting fireballs from his eyes and lightning bolts out of his,,,well,,,you know the rest of the quote.

Sitting at the game, I just don't quite get this love affair with Kodi. He may be a great quarterback one day, but not this season, and maybe not next season, maybe not ever. But honestly, listening to some of the people in the stands, when he tried to run, and he got tackled, the line wasn't blocking hard enough for him. When he about got Tommy Trott killed over the middle, no big deal. When he threw high and behind the receivers, they should have run the pattern better.

William Wallace,,,,err...I mean Kodi Burns is a short field quarterback who is so one dimensional, that merely saying he is one dimensional understates it. He is incapable of starting and finishing a drive at anything other than optimal field position.

Crudup, Tennessee's I back scheme didn't do too well either. It is not the scheme that is wrong. Perhaps Brad Lester not being in the game had something to do with. More likely, it is starting drives on less than our 5 three times and offensive linemen killing drives with penalties. There is so much more than just the QB. When we go from a 1st down to 2nd and 20. And we keep getting in predictable situations due to penalties, no scheme is going to work, whether it is I, T, wishbone, single wing, pro set, wing T, I bone, or, west coast offense, the veer, or my favorite, the high post attack.

Danielson also said you can't have the best of both worlds. The meaning of that comment was that you can't mix Tubs ball with Franklin ball and make it work. He also said Tony should give the spread offense away at no cost as opposed to selling it for $3,000.

I'm going to step out on a limb here and say Auburn has less Þhan average receivers for SEC standards these days. Only Miss St's look worse. Also, our offensive line is the worst I've seen since '03. They're pretty bad.

ask Brandon Cox about the line play before big changes were made last year. I will go out on a limb and say other than penalties, the line play is pretty good.. Now the receivers, that is another story. I have said we have been below average for the last 3 years.

Jay,

I have wasted company time reading all of the auburn sites and let me tell you, fans did not like what they heard from Franklin at all.

-the perfect half comments, cmon. Thats like saying my kid had the only D+ grade in his class. Franklin hasnt addressed 3 touchdowns in 3 SEC games, check out our offensive rankings, not good. Franklin never says a bad word about Todd. Does Franklin have a category for should have been picked. If so, Todd would have about 30.

-I felt the tension on the Tubberville made the call to play Kodi. Whew...I see that coming to a head. Thanks God Tubbs does give a crap, no telling where we will be.

- I dreaded Franklins Sunday press conference. He sounds more aloof each week. He just does not get. Its not that its first game jitters. We are about to embark on the nasty part of our schedule. It doesnt get any easier. Lets be honest if Jonathan Crompton wasnt so terrible we would have seen a different result this weekend.

Auburn fans that have excuses should go back to their fantasy lands. They remind me of Bagdad Bob, the Iraq general, who would said on the newscast, "The US has not invaded us"., as US tanks rolled by behind him.

Those fans arent looking at the big picture. They say look, we are 4-1, yea, but we are playing with fire, its like the drunk uncle playing with M-80's on the 4th of July, just one slip up and BAM, we have a hook for a hand.

Wake up...call Stan White....we need a QB and after this season I will need some more health insurance.

Ask Brandon Cox about the Oline??? Cox is definately not the guy to ask. He was a stitched up robot last year. He got sacked and mauled all over the place! Good grief.

A lot of the sacks and hits Cox took last year was because he had no presence in the pocket. He couldn't feel the pressure around him and would hold onto the ball forever.

Franklin reminds me of Cousin Eddy on Lampoon. Seriously, close your eyes add a few inches and see if you can't picture him with a meister brau in one hand (in his bathrobe mind you) and the sewer pipe from the SUV saying "Merry Christmas...s*****r's full". He's honest to a fault, even when honesty isn't prudent....
