Video report, 9/30
Here is a little something from The Head Coach and Ryan Pugh. The general theme, as you might guess, is offense.
We also get Act II of The Blogger Files.
p.s.: I'm going to write about Josh Bynes for tomorrow's editions. I'm sick of writing about offense.
Enjoy.

Tubs is a world beater in giving an interview isn't he? For instance, check out the quote below that almost sends a chill through the spine of anybody that really loves a "gritty" football coach for what he ought to be...
"I'm here to win games. I'm not here to win friends and run for public office."
Then here's this doozy in the same interview...
"The one thing I like about Tony, of course, with you all he's pretty blunt, he'll give you the coaches' perspective. I'm more POLITICAL. Sometimes you can handle the truth and sometimes you can't handle the truth."
See how that works?
One thing I've always liked about Tubs is his dry sense of humor.
I personally liked the "you want me to take the blame?" comment.
Good stuff.
Yea. He says a lot of funny stuff.
Someone asked Jere Beasley (Tuberville's attorney) yesterday: "Are you driving him back to Auburn?"
Beasley looks perplexed.
"No. He drives himself. He doesn't think he's special. He's just a regular guy."
I like those 2 quotes in the same press session. I say you either take those 2 quotes as a sum total and believe Tubs OR consider that he is really just laffing at all of the modern sports nuts that know about 20% of the story and think that their opinions and questions are actually valid. I'm good with either one of those 2 scenerios. Personally, I admire CTT for his ability to put up with it, I would handle the stoopid questions more like $aban.
BTW Jay...can't wait to talk defense tommorow.
I got cash money that says Tubs has been reading your blog.
Tuberville has remarkable tolerance for the inane b.s. that follows him (and Saban, I'm sure) everywhere.
I was just asking Charles Goldberg if he could remember Tuberville ever getting mad in public. We couldn't come up with any instances.
I know he has read it.
He read it sitting right here one day. That's when he started the "Hot Blog" thing with me.
Jay,
Bo Megansen (sp) just brought up a good point. With all of the high schools that run the Tony Franklin offense that he had worked with in the past, is TF mainly there to get us in good with those schools and open up doors in places we couldn't get to in the past?
Winner winner, chicken dinner!
Who's up next? Alex Lincoln? Laura?
From the ITAT message board (which I can't see because I'm not a subscriber) via Josh Moon:
"This article was written by Jay Tate, which means it has no credibility and is about as worthless as (boobs) on a tomato! Can't believe that guy is still on staff there!"
Those would be pretty worthless.
What is ITAT?
I'm gay.
Inside The Auburn Tigers.
It's Mark Murphy's publication. Mark and I don't see eye to eye, I guess you'd say, so he basically lets his readers rip me (and others writers Mark doesn't like) to pieces on the board.
The best part is when ITAT posters, the silly ones, rip me for being fat when Mark and Jason Caldwell each weigh at least 50 pounds more than me. The irony is so delicious.
Gotcha. I used to have a subscription to that, for about 3 years actually, then I realized that I never read much of note in it.
A little Soul Asylum, Sexual Healing, for the road.
Mark Murphy is a lazy writer. He never knows anything other than the obvious that everybody else has already discussed and made consensus fact.
Don't nail me to the corner for making a statement about Mark. I'm entitled to my opinion just like everybody else is and I almost vomit when Mark jumps on WNSP in the morning. It's enough that I've already stooped so low that my starving mind has to tune in to WNSP and hear Mark as the subject matter expert. Sounds like he just pounded a bowl and everything's funny and la la.
I'd like to hear people that take their jobs seriously report news about stuff I care about.
My name's Will Crudup.
Oh, I'm not stopping you from disparaging Mark Murphy.
I think he actually takes his job too seriously, though.
If that's the case, he should bring more to the table. I get tired of the wanna be comical stuff when it comes to Auburn down here. All the pro Bama stuff and then a guy jumps on and makes remarks that clearly indicate he's afraid to be real on air in Crimson Land.
McCready wasn't afraid. You're weren't afraid, Jay.
The Megansen's??? give me a break. i thought i heard the last of those names.
I'm not afraid of being real on the air. No doubt about that.
I know nothing about them. Should I?
Jay G,
I would have to say that your site is my favorite. I think you are even and balanced.
You are much better than Pat Forde. IMHO
Crudup, you're making me want to go pour one out for my homies, Jay and Neal. Just cut WNSP loose. This blog (among other quality AU blogs) has more information than you can ever get out of NSP. If you need to listen to something, go grab an ESPN podcast. It's better than having to listen to Shirvanian or that joker they have on in the afternoons these days.
/sheds a little tear for the old SportsDrive
RM, what happened to the Meganson's (sp)?
Tray has the body of an OLB? would we all agree im not sure..
You're killing me.
It's Bo and Laura Megginson.
I've spoken with her a few times and she's very friendly person.
I need satellite.
Hey Jay,
In your best opinion, can we draw any similarities between Auburn's offensive problems and U of Michigan's offensive problems?
From the outside it seems they are close to the same. With the obvious difference being the scores at the end of games and thus wins and losses, 4-1 vs. 2-2. Auburn is ranked above Michigan in total offense. I have no idea how similar the offensive "systems" are. But, you would have to think UM has some pretty good athletes up there in Ann Arbor. UM finished at 17th in AP and 18th last year.
Michigan. A bunch of white guys trying to run the spread?
This is one of those days where I have no idea what y'all are talking about.
You too?
ditto. as i have stated before i have a hard time imagining any sports radio programming worse than what i'm subjected to every morning here in knoxville.
i do take a listen to ITAT radio archives every now and then when they have guests. that's not too bad.
ITAT Radio ... that's where Mark and his co-host said beat writers should be required to pass football competency test to cover the beat.
I'd love to take one. If Mark or Jason or Stephen fail, though, they'd have to leave town and never return to campus. Mark wouldn't risk it.
I think the situations at Auburn and Michigan are similar in that this particular type of system seems more difficult to grasp initially.
If you're going to build an offense based on winning one-on-one matchups, you have to have speed guys and elusive guys. Michigan apparently has a dearth of both kinds.
How about Auburn? Mario Fannin is intriguing. Tommy Trott can work linebackers. Who else do you think can win those individual showdowns day in and day out?
LaDarius Perkins(2009 recruit)is awesome at one on one. He's got Caddy's moves with frenchy's speed. I guess that will be next year.
Robert Dunn does OK at one on one. I don't get the infatuation with Wario. He has had opportunities, but I haven't noticed him doing any better than BradL or BenT. He is sort of a blend of the 2. All of them are good quality SEC caliber backs...just not great.
I'm with you on that, Hoopie.
Wario is a good player, but I haven't seen transcendent greatness yet.
I'm the same way with Fannin and Burns.
I see the talent there, but I don't see why everyone thinks they will suddenly step in and be Late 80's Randall Cunningham in the same backfield with Bo Jackson
Following a line of thought I saw from earlier, I think the idea of figuring out how to get Tate moving downhill is a GREAT idea. Whatever it takes to do that is good.
They did that last year, got Ben Tate running downhill, and everybody wanted Gorgeous Al Borges shipped to Irkutsk.
here is something I don't really understand though - blocking for the run in the spread. seems like to me it ought to be the same as any other run. "okay, you see that guy in front of you. yea, you need to whoop his butt."
I tend to over simplify things, this is true. But a lot of times it's the obvious thing that's the problem.
To me, the problem with the O is real simple. It has nothing to do with Xs and Os or who is doing what and whatever. In my opinion it all boils down to attitude. From my vantage point, THEY DO NOT HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY out there on the field. It looks like they are working on the assembly line at the Hyundai plant. You can be TOO methodical and I think we are. I think that was what CTT was trying to get at by putting in Kodi. We have to start playing like we just robbed the bank and people are chasing us. We don't. They need to have a sense of urgency.
You have a sense of urgency when it comes to posting, Phred. You cannot and will not be denied.
Now what the hell is that supposed to mean? I haven't said "boo" up until now.
Phred....we need the sense of urgency that you provide. Without it...we're not Hotties.
Jay,
not really important but why did Bo Megginson have his own show. Did he walk on at Auburn, or was he related to someone in the program? Though I never thought his show was very good (see the definition of pumper) I'm not trying to dog him. I really just want to know if he was anything more than just a big Auburn fan?
Phred,
it's alot different when you are run blocking out of a two point stance... and there is alot more that goes into than blocking the guy in front of you.
Phred -
Shout Out to You!! What a point about "Playing with urgency". Never reflected on that until now - It DOES look like they are working the assembly line. No fire or passion.
Great observation.
Jay G,
This site is so much more fun than any other Auburn site.
On another note, how you even stand to be with JL on SportsLine. I mean Barry is Ok. But Longshore, goodness gracious sakes alive, he is still doing same old tire schtick that wasn't funny when I first arrived here 10 years ago, and is even less humorous today. He doesn't do his homework, and when he screws something up, he says that the information he screws up is not worth his time. Like the time he asked the WKU HFC what it was like coaching in the same town as Bowling Green University. It goes beyond him being a "bammer" as they say.
Denny, it's fun being on the air with John Longshore. His uppity attitude makes me laugh.
I honestly can't listen to the show because it's Groundhog Day -- what you hear today is what you heard a decade earlier -- but God bless 'em for making a good living out of it.
That job requires a level of patience and diplomacy I do not possess.
Well, as long as you didn't say you enjoyed matching wits with him.
I don't listen to the show anymore as well.
If you want fine radio, catch my show with Joe B.Hall.
Jay,
Great chat with Ryan Pugh. Next time, ask him if next year he'd like to play alongside his Hoover teammate, Patrick Crump, formerly of UAT.
RM ... what's up bro?
I understand that the kinetics of blocking from a stance versus blocking from the stand up are different. I also understand that I'm not necessarily blocking "the guy in front of me."
That's not my point really. I am a lineman and my assignment is to eliminate my man from the play. What the other 10 people around me are doing doesn't really matter. I gotta beat my guy. No matter what style we're in, my ability to beat him is about talent and effort.
Which part are we missing? I think it's effort.
Phred,
I agree with you to a point. But, to me it looks like we've got the basketball equivalent of a great half-court offense that is trying to fast-break every time down court. Some players are better suited for half-court, others for fast break.
What do you think?
Jay G,
When is Josh going to start doing Movie reviews again. I used to really look forward to those.
I think they need to get mad about it, which is what I think Mr. Pugh was getting at in J. Geezys excellent adventure.
Phred,
Yea, no argument there, and I think they will.
Jay on your question
How about Auburn? Mario Fannin is intriguing. Tommy Trott can work linebackers. Who else do you think can win those individual showdowns day in and day out?
Pierre-Louis was going to get significant playing time. Someone earlier mentioned Dunn and Fannin of course. But we have no one like Percy Harvin, Tebow, Pat White, or Noel Devine which seem to be "spread" type players. (Neither did those teams until the respective spread coaches came in and recruited for that offense. Would you agree that Florida figured out how to make it work with Tebow and Leak? The offensive side of the team both coaches and players don't seemed to be working together mainly the o line. That's suprise to me and others I'm sure. Do you think they all (o-line) have bought into the system? Do you think Hugh Nall has bought into the System?
in terms of WR's, whether winning 1 on 1 or simply being playmakers, i think Dunn is the best guy we have. he makes the most plays and seems to have the best ability to be in place to make BIG plays (if the ball could ever get to him)
phred,
i agree the effort doesn't seem to be what it was last year, but this system was not made to run out of, no matter how you block it.
The running plays in this system might work in another conference, but there is too much speed on SEC defenses to try to run outside everytime, which are the only running plays i've seen so far.
Hey crudup or weagle251, In regards to WNSP, how many times can Shirvanian ask Woodberry or Matthews..."why do the players all stand up and look to the sidelines?" I swear I have heard that same question from him on 4 separate occasions. Don't even get me started on that clown with Greenwood in the afternoons, down here you are better off with satellite radio.
there is a reference here to florida's mixing of tebow and leak. one thing i remember about that arrangement was that whichever one wasn't playing was on the sidelines wearing a headset, apparently engaged in the strategy of the game even if they weren't actually in the game.
from section 53 i don't see anything like that going on with todd and burns. whoever is in is in, the other guy is counting 4 leaf clovers.
meyer deserves credit for bringing some cohesiveness and mutuality to that situation. franklin deserves criticism for failing to do so here.
About receivers we have that fit the spread, I know its been brought up before but where is Swinton? Jay G., have you asked that question, seen him around?
auburn guy.....the headsets vs clover counting is a very good point. I haven't been to a game this year, but still had not even considered that the backup can be muchmore involved if he is knows tha called play and follows the qb play.
so... apparently prayers are answered via blog comments... how about someone praying for our offense?
I haven't seen Swinton myself, but he's around. I asked. I'm guessing he isn't getting the job done in practice ...

Yesterday, we learned the word
tuberulence (tub - ur - u - lence): the chaotic collision of the offensive systems at Auburn University as perpetrated by Coach Tommy Tuberville and various current and past offensive coordinators, namely Coach Tony Franklin.
Todays word is
frankiness (frank - e - ness): the act of pretending to be apologetic while subtly slamming the hell out of all those around you.
A synonym for the word frank-i-ness would be the expression ... a tonyism.
Jay, I know this is really random, but what happened to Prechae Rodriguez? Didn't he come in with SenDerrick Marks and that class?
Prechae was a senior last year.
He was a juco transfer when he came to Auburn.
a 'Tonyism'. boy, you must have way too much time on your hands.....but i like it. ;)
not really these days, but I am a serious multi-tasker, which is an easy thing to be in the techno age.
You going to slide over to Nash Veags this weekend?
of course. u coming? you've got a spot to tailgate if you are.
It has crossed my mind. Still up in the air. I'll hit you up later. Peace.
I can't believe I missed out on tickets for this one.
They went on sale through the Vandy website on Labor day, and I got on there about 3 hours after they went on sale and they were gone.
On the 1st day, it was the only game that had sold out.
