Jay G update
As discussed several times before, I won't have time to blog much tonight.
I have an early flight out of PIT and I'm 90 minutes from PIT right now.
Tommy Tuberville will hold his regularly scheduled teleconference Friday at 3 p.m. I hope to be providing substantive updates before and after that event.
Take care and behave.

I haven't seen the game film, but my buddy watched the film and said that WVa did the same as the other teams that beat us.....creep the LBs and Dbs up closer to the line more and more as the game goes on. I imagine that these tems realize that they cn cover our weak Wrs deep even when they re setup close to the line. We haven't thrown deep successfully in many games and our offense gets progressively more smothered as the game goes on.
As bizarre as it sounds, I think that this is our underlying offensive problem...regardless of who the HC, OC, or QB is. This has been our problem since the 2006 season and most of the offensive failure cn be traced back to it.
As CTT stated, an important reason to go to the spread..to get better skill player recruits.
All of this may be a moot point. It seems that all of the vocal AU fans want CTT gone and the fans still in CTT's camp seem worn down and quiet.
CTT has built something at AU to be proud of. CTT has execelled at about every criteria expected from a top CFB coach except developing a successful offense.
Wow what a great shout out for HABOTN.COM on The Roundtable. ha ha
Last season wasnt' a great year, but it wasn't horrible either. The loss to MSU was the big let down.
As for next season, I am optimistic. These years after our starting QB graduates have traditionally been a pain, and it has been going on long before Tuberville.
One of my criticism of Auburn has always been we never have a solid backup QB with experience. We play enough cream puffs to have someone that has played a significant amount of time. Look at LSU or Vandy. Their backup QBs killed us.
I see us as a team with potential, although the runningbacks are a big question. They seem constantly injured. We could have used Tate against WV and Fanin being out is a big blow.
I also see a lot of underachieving talent at receiver. Something has to change there. A more experienced QB should help, but it is the same story as with Campbell in 2003. You look at his numbers and they weren't that good, but you look at the number of dropped passes and you realize where the problem is.
When things are bad, ther are never as bad as it might seem. When things are good, they are never as good as they seem.
I do think people confuse talent with good play. Talk to Leon Hart about that.
hoopie, I largely agree. You could see how close the linebackers were creeping up in the second half and was hoping we would hit something across the middle.
You know I really don't care for the insinuation that because I or others want to see a change in coaching that we are "fair weather fans". That logic is complete and utter BS.
Change for the sake of change is foolish. Change because your program is in steady decline is not foolish.
Change because a program is infested with complacency is not foolish - it is necessary.
CTT is NOT GETTING THE JOB DONE. Period (unless simply beating bammer every year is considered getting the job done.) He has been given ample opportunity in 10 years to tweak things and take us to the level of SEC Championships and he has failed at this more than he has succeeded.
There is nothing left for CTT to try and do to "change" things for the better. We have 10 years of proof that his way will not bring us to a consistent championship level. Is there a coach out there than can do that? I don't know know the answer to that question. What I do know is that I feel a willingness to try and find that person, instead of doing the same thing over and over and over, year after year after year.
Jay's now live on the RoundTable...wde
"I take care of the hotties and they take care of me." Master Jay G.
I love it!
For the post about having to hire a previous Head Coach (if it comes to that) and the statement that we don't want any "on the job training", I would say that, that should not always the case. It seems to me that a certain fellow named Bob Stoops has done relatively well at Oklahoma and has actually WON a National Champtionship....and, gasp, with no previous HC experience. There are no specific rules to follow when hiring. Hire the best coach for your program, period.
Good stuff from Jay G.
May it's gonna be crazy from until when SOMETHING changes. Should he stay or should he go now...
Anyway, that fair weather fan thing is BS...you're right, James.
Man, not may...
Thanks for just giving us a shout out the show jay.
Thanks for just giving us a shout out the show jay.
he's done. it is all over but the signing.
Those of you who don't remember the whole 'duck hunt' controversy, feel free to check the handy HABOTN archives on the right side of the front page, especially those from the week of 11/25/07-12/2/07 and 12/2/07-12/9/07.
Here is your Money Quote #1:
``We were sitting around the fire. We'd just got through eating. It came on the news that I'd accepted the job. We all turned around and looked at each other very slowly and started laughing about it. That's how things start. It really had nothing to do with Arkansas officials. This is just rumors. It's rumors that get started, internet, talk and everybody thought I was probably over there interviewing for the job. It was a little different. My wife even called me and wanted to know what in the world was going on. There was no basis to it on either side. It was strictly bad reporting."
That was Tuberville on 12/5/07, describing his reaction upon hearing the TV news report that he had accepted the Arky job.
Which begs the question - if he knew there was nothing to the rumor, why didn't he get on the same phone he used to tell his wife it was bogus and call up Phillip Marshall and tell him the exact same thing?
Now for Money Quote #2:
"Tuberville began his Wednesday press conference asserting that there was a 'misunderstanding,' yet he was the only guy capable of resolving the 'misunderstanding.'
His alibi is that he doesn't comment on rumors."
Make of all that what you will.
Oh yeah... Josh Moon at the campfire would be good stuff!
This comment has been removed by the author.
Josh Moon you may have HEARD it before, but I bet you had not characterized Franklin as "passive aggressive". Admit it! :-)
If you had, please accept my apology.
nola...Mark Richt is another pretty good example
I feel like Tubs will stay but I think he will be given the "Shula ultimatum", we'll see how loyal he is to his BBQ buddies then
If Dye, Lowder, Raine, etc. want him gone guys, he is gone.
Tuberville used up all of the goodwill he got from Jetgate when he did that crap last December. Believe what you want, but if the rumors weren't true, why didn't he come out and deny them?
We know he will. He did it Monday.
Keep Tubs another season. Give em a chance to right the ship. That is my opinion.
Well, let's just go ahead and make the change. How about we clean house completely? But when we do everyone needs to be ready for a loooong & rocky road. And besides WHO would come to Auburn?
Steve,
I didn't even realize there was an archive on this page.
Go to the archives starting around the iron bowl last year and read forward until Tub says he's staying at Auburn.
Maybe you feel Jay G is serving you up a "crap burger" as well, but somebody was stringing everyone along at that point. It was all part of a game.
lots of coaches would LOVE to have the AU job...finding interested, qualified candidates would not be challenging
I heard Lane Kiffin and Butch Davis are interested.
Hornet, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I do not believe Auburn or Jay Jacobs are capable of getting a "big name" coach and that is what Auburn needs.
Who the hell do you guys that say we can't get anyone else think we are? UAB?
We are a big time SEC program. I expect better. Does that make me a fair-weather fan?
I agree, Jim. I think some of our fans have allowed themselves to be convinced we are a UAB and shouldn't expect any better.
Steve, I was following P Marsh last December, he seemed pretty up in the air about what Tubs was going to do, but I guess he should have just listened to Tubs like you did. You read right through the "I concur" as I love Auburn and will be here until I'm fired. Funny how last Monday when he's feeling true heat as one about to get canned he sings a totally different tune. Additionally, Jimmy Sexton, Tubs attorney, is well known for these ploys. This would be the main reason I wouldn't want Muschamp, I believe Muschamp uses him as well.
How do people consider those wanting a coaching change "fair weather fans". Those wanting a coaching change are also going to these games and watching them every painful minute on TV. They just want the pain to stop.
Big shout out to Monica on The Roundtable!
Let me defend myself - the reason I say Auburn will have a difficult time finding a "big name" coach is because we are turning our back on a coach that has done a good job over 10 years, gave us an undefeated season a few years ago, he has one bad season and we are ready to kick him to the curb. Who wants to walk into that knowing that they can do a great job and have one bad season we start screaming for their head. Look, I like Tubs and I think he has done a great job and I would love for him to stay.
"Big Name" is not what I would want in a new coach anyway. I would want the BEST coach for Auburn...and I think it's time we went and got him
sexton is an agent, not a lawyer.
And i have no problem with looking at other jobs to get a raise. It is a business. In my industry, the only way to get a good raise is to switch jobs or threaten switching. Of course, there are exceptions, but in general an employer will keep you for the lowest price he or she thinks they can retain you. That's just a way of life. Supply and demand, capitalism, etc.
Hornet - who is the BEST coach for Auburn?
Let me list the reasons a big-time coach would come to AU:
1. $$$$$
2. $$$$$
3. $$$$$
Don't believe it, ask Saban.
Sexton works as an agent and attorney, Auburn doesn't deal with agents, he serves as Tubs lawyer in contract negotiations.
I certainly don't know...and I doubt that I'll get any input. But we have adminstrators a nice salary to use an interview process to find him.
great job on the roundtable today Jay G.! Very entertaining ...
But that coach will have to be like Saban and demand complete contral - will BOT give it to him?
I botched that last one...point is...we can find a good fit for our program -- won't have a lack of outstanding applicants. We are a top 20 national program in the nation's best conference with financial resources and facilities to attract the next championship coach at AU
I think one of the fundamental differences is how we define "good job". For me 10 years with one SEC title and one BCS bowl, steady decline in SEC record and total offense since 2004, dismal recruiting and more....this does not "a good job" make.
2004 was 4 years and a lot (Ga Tech, Wisconsin, Ark, both complete destructions by UGA, Miss State, South Florida, Vandy, Ark t his year & WVU) of unexpainable losses ago.
2004 was preceded by 5 years with a lot of unexplainable losses.
We peaked in 2004 and we've been sliding on and off the field ever since.
Scranton, all three of your points were the exact same thing. They were not their own unique thought.
That is all.
ha ha Mr. S, Josh Moon called me out!!
So I guess UT won't find a good coach either because they fired a guy who has won the SEC and a MNC.
How did Michigan ever get Rich Rod?
Lloyd Carr had a MNC.
so this is HABOTN!?!? Hello hotties. Thanks for listening to the roundtable. Checkin' it out as I head toward KY ...
Don't forget that Fulmer had 'one bad year' in '05 and they gave him a shot at turning it around.
It certainly seems to have paid off, hasn't it?
Exactly, someone making $1M or $1.5M probably wouldn't mind making $3M+. Just my thought anyways. The right coordinator would love to come in around $2M. One thing I've learned is that people like money.
Welcome, Doug! I love the Roundtable. Y'all help keep me hooked up while I live in the far away (and third world) country of West Virginia.
Too bad I was driving home at the most interesting part of the day. Is Jay still on or is he off? Also, someone summarize what was said.
Thanks in advance
Monica - are all WVU fans as classless as the ones I encountered last night? They make LSU fans look tame.
Ok, so Tub has had one bad year.
Let's see what we have here.
Seasons that he can't be blamed for (1, 1999)
Bad seasons (1, 2008)
Mediocre seasons (3, 2001, 2003, 2007)
Good seasons (4, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006)
Great seasons (1, 2004)
So 5 out of 10 seasons were good/great.
5 out of 10 were average or worse.
had to give ya a shoutout today monica!!! Doing all we can on the roundtable to make HABOTN the ONLY PLACE to go for AU news ... Jay G. Rules with AU news! (hey Jay, this is hard to do on an iPhone) :)
Welcome to HABOTN Doug!
I'll have to say the Round Table on WMSP is far superior to another one here in the Ham.
Tonya - I know two who are nice. One is my neighbor and one is my nephew. Most I know are not alums. So, I'd say your experience was pretty much on target. That's why Greg and I stayed home; the fans, the parking and the traffic. Now people will understand why I say WVU fans are worse than bama fans. Sorry you had a bad trip.
rk,
With the talent we had in 2003, I would say that was his 'one bad season'. Otherwise, right on.
Doug...You ought to try using the Iphone driving and typing! Just kidding, you would get in a wreck trying.
Mr. Sensible has been putting everybody onto the Round Table. I have started to listen and I like it.
That was fun, Doug! Jay G. makes HABOTN the best source of Auburn info and a refuge for the Auburn junkie wanting high quality discussion with sane fans.
Nice work with an iPhone!
thanks eddie and James ... Josh and I just try to have fun, and not take things too seriously ... Y'all catch me up - will TT be back in y'all's opinion? About to run out of coverage for awhile, but I'll be back!!
I believe Tubs is gone because of a lot of different reasons. I believe the fan support is now finally eroding. I'm numb about it.
Second half adjustments issues with our team didn't just start this year.
1999 vs Ole Miss, lead 17-14 at the half, don't score in the 2nd half lose 24-17 in OT.
1999 vs Miss State, lead 16-3 with 2:30 to go, give up a TD, get stopped on the goal line, intentionally take a safety, give up a long KR, lose 18-16.
1999 Iron Bowl, lead 14-6 at the half/14-8 after the 3rd quarter, lose 28-17.
2001 at Arkansas, tied 17-17 at the end of the 3rd quarter, lose 42-17.
2002 vs Arkansas, lead Ark 17-14 with 2 mins to go in the half, Fred Talley goes 80 yards for the TD, Duval gets a punt blocked, Ark FG Ark leads 24-17 at the half, Auburn dies in the 2nd half loses 38-17.
2002 vs Georgia, lead 14-3 at the half, lose 24-21.
I could go on, but really I'm tired of typing this.
y'all email me at dougamos1@gmail.com when jay g reports on what TT says this afternoon. In fact, email me anytime ... Enjoy the afternoon with Jay hotties!!!!
