Franklin speaks again

Tony Franklin is appearing on WMSP AM 740 in Montgomery today.

I'm listening and I'll post anything new -- or really interesting -- he says.

*Again talking about how he didn't talk with Tuberville directly. "We didn't have long game-plan conversations. That's OK with me. Me and Larry (Blakeney) didn't have long game-plan conversations."

*"To me, they weren't. That was a unique and different situation. I've never been in a situation where I worried if my play calls would get the head coach angry."

*On his play calls: "Most of them were not very good."

MCP ALERT!!

*On QBs: "(Todd) had a tremendous arm in high school. He was a wonderful prospect to bring in. What we didn't know was that the shoulder injury he suffered in (junior) college was much worse. His arm strength wasn't near what we thought."

*Why the QBs were weak: "There were a whole lot of deep-seated problems that, honestly, weren't problems with the quarterback. The plan and the scheme wasn't working for numerous reasons."

*Parallels with Franklin's "Patton Speech" and Mike Gundy's "I'm a man; I'm 40" speech: "Mike Gundy won his team with that speech. He took a calculated gamble and risk. That was the changing point in his career at Oklahoma State."

*On his big rant: "It turned out to be a positive except for those who got their feelings hurt."

*Tuberville's dedication to the spread: "I depends on what day of the week it is. What you do out of formations is more important than the word spread. It's become a cliche term; it doesn't mean anything."

*Tuberville's offensive plan: "I have no idea what he believes in and I'm not sure he really knows at this point."

*What did you learn?: "For me, the lesson is to trust your gut instinct. I still feel good about me and my ability to coach football. (This system) still works, it just didn't work here."

*How will they do: "Tommy has always been able to pull rabbits out of his hat. Anytime you have good defense, you have a chance to win. I'd be surprised if they didn't win tonight. There's enough good players there to win -- especially defense. (Tuberville) will survive this one."

*You still going to teach camps?: (The SEC prohibits coaches from having a financial stake in coaching endeavors beyond his school's focus) "I'll talk with my former partners and see if we can get this working again and see if I can buy back. Troy is always going to be part of my family. We want to do as many things as we can with Troy University."

I haven't heard anything to indicate he was getting overruled in terms of play calling, other than CTT asking for Kodi to be put in.

You keep your name out there, by doing these things. Plus I'm sure he's tired of people wanting his story.

So with what Rod Smith said a couple of weeks ago about the "old Tony Franklin" being back in practice, is Greg Knox the snitch?

9:30 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- I'm not talking about play calling. I'm wonder who's idea it was to put in the ace formation during Vandy week and UT week. Was that forced upon him.

OUCH- "Depends on what day of the week it is" referring to Tubs commitment to the Spread. That should be quote of the day.

I agree that Franklin has to be getting something for these interviews, other than just a chance to tell his side of the story.

The timing of this is curious to say the least.

TF probably wants to wait for those Auburn checks to clear (especially if they have the Colonial logo on them) before going public and running his mouth.

9:40 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Franklin seems to be taking the high road, I've been impressed with him the last two days.

9:41 AM
Blogger wartiger said...

I like monicas question..If TF isn't getting paid why is he doing these interviews? I know he had a rough deal but the guy is getting paid $600000 by the university my point is TF is not a victim here! also correct me if I am wrong but wasn't TF the only AU coach willing to do finebaums show?

9:41 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The one thing missing in this story is what happened from Tuesday to Wednesday that got him fired. My best guess is that the other offensive coaches went to CTT about something CTF did in that practice that CTT was unaware of.

9:41 AM
Blogger James in Auburn said...

Steve good point. If CTT is as disconnected as TF leads us to believe, then he probably wasn't aware of anything bad happening until the BBQ came whining and complaining about dry rub Franklin.

9:43 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

At least Franklin didn't speculate as to what happened between Tues & Wed that week like everyone else in the world did.

Of course those speculations are probably pretty much on the money.

9:44 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Agreed James & Steve. Yesterday he pretty much said that he didn't have much conversations with Blakeney either. It sounds like he is somewhat of a loner to begin with.

9:44 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Look at it this way ...

Franklin acts one way for 9 months and 20 days or whatever. Then he comes out one day as a crazed lunatic. He's screaming at everyone -- coaches included -- and generally freaking everyone out.

He already was unpopular among the staff. He's acknowledged that.

If you're Tuberville and you see a highly unpopular assistant acting in highly unusual ways, what do you do?

I know my answer ... and I really like Franklin.

9:44 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

i agree with you RK. i mean, when a guy gets fired it's not all chocolates and flowers. obviously there were problems but i like him not ripping Tubs. him taking reponsiblity for the whole thing not working is cool. but if he knew it wasn't going to work, why'd he take the job?

why would he do these interviews? he loves to talk. he hasn't had anything to do in 2 weeks. why not?

9:45 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I agree Jay. Tubs was forced into the decision much earlier than he would have liked or wanted.

9:45 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Franklin is DEFINITELY a loner.

Recall that he moved out of the coaches' building at Troy and into an entirely different building to "avoid distraction."

I'm not hating. I like working alone as well. I'm just saying ...

9:46 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Yeah Jay...but you like to cut lose here. I don't see CTF cutting lose like this with anyone.

9:47 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Since I never listen to this network, seriously who is the loud redneck guy?

9:47 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

CTF is reminding me of someone I use to work with. We hired the guy on and after 3 months it was plain that the guy wasn't able to produce. The guy tended to get others to do his work for him.

Eventually, the guy pissed off the last guy that was trying to help him and the guy was let go. We all knew it was coming.

Once it happened, the guy called everyone he worked with on their cell phones asking why. He called me too. I am not certain what hoped to accomplish with the calls, but the result was we all thought him to be a nut job.

The best thing someone can do when fired is to say that you are sorry things didn't work out, but you wish everyone the best. There is no benefit to doing the I don't know what the heck happened thing.

9:48 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Aren't the coordinators supposed to be involved in working close with the offensive assistants?

From what Franklin said, it didn't seem like he worked with them on their positions at all.

9:50 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

The loud, inarticulate guy is John Longshore.

The calm, articulate guy is Barry McKnight.

9:50 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

There wasn't a lot of communication happening among offensive assistants and, therefore, the players.

When you hear Tristan Davis talk, as he did earlier this week, about how he's glad to know the gameplan ahead of time ... this is what he's talking about.

9:51 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ah, so that's the Longshore that people talk about on here. I was never in the know about him.

9:52 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Franklin is passive aggressive and playing the martyr and some are reading that as "high road" and "straight talk."

He's all aww shucks,"I appreciate the opportunity" and "Auburn will be just fine" while getting in digs all along.

If he's not getting paid this is one more instance of his really crappy judgment like taking a job he knew he shouldn't take.

The more he talks the more I'm convinced he's full of crap. However, I do think he actually BELIEVES his own crap which makes him seem genuine and makes him likable.

9:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think the answer to why CTF is gone may be very simple. I get the impression he got onto other coaches at practice in front of the players. In doing so, that would be undermining the other coaches. Those coaches probably went to CTT and said, hey, how are we suppose to have the respect of the players if CTF is bashing us in front of them?

9:53 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

So who is to blame in that situation? The coordinator who is supposed to be over that whole side of the ball or the assistants who are supposed to work closely with the players on their technique and the game plan?

9:53 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Well it is obvious that CTF wasn't a fit at Auburn. But the only thing that is bothersome is that he is not the only OC to not be a fit at Auburn either. I just believe is needed on offense at more than the OC.

9:53 AM
Blogger James in Auburn said...

So the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. That explains a lot about what we've seen the past several weeks.

9:53 AM
Blogger ADP said...

And Jay G answers the question once and for all. And the answer is what some of us suspected all along. If you act like a complete fool, there is a good chance you are putting your boss in a position where the only choice he has is to get rid of you. That's why he's the boss. These are the kinds of decisions he has to make if he wants to remain the boss.

9:53 AM
Blogger Monica said...

You're right, Monica, and now you see why I've been saying 75% all this time.

9:55 AM

And in this case the CEO comes off looking like a clueless moron because he isn't paying enough attention to what is happening "underneath" him.

9:55 AM

Monica, I agree. The more Franklin talks, the more I believe that Tuberville made the right decision.

Let's put this in a different way. Go up to your wife in front of your kids and tell her what an idiot she is. See how long it takes for her to make a decision about your future.

9:58 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I don't think we'll be able to get a decent OC after this year unless somepeople are moved out of the way and the new guy gets to bring in his own people.

Of course, we could go out and get hammered tonight and get ready to bring in a whole new staff.

9:58 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Agreed Monica. The question is does the Auburn Fanbase or more importantly, the Auburn Powers believe that Tubs deserves a chance or is capable of a chance to correct it. Also, is there another example of a coach around 10 years in that was given a chance to rectify the problem and succeed? Fulmer was given that chance at UT and has failed miserably.

7:30 -- toe meets leather
1 a.m. -- leave stadium
2:15 -- arrive back at pit-area hotel
6:15 -- leave hotel
6:40 -- drop off rental, check in
8:15 -- take off for atl

Friday -- CHILLIN
Saturday -- WEEZER in atl
Sunday -- Back to work!

The bottom-line is Tuberville had to make the decision to let TF go. It had to be done after what happened on Tuesday. If he had stayed on the rest of the year then Tubs risked losing the team. At least now it looks like everyone is on the same page and we can still salvage something from the season. Tubs made the right decision no matter how bad it looks.

Jay,

With your 75% assessment, I was wondering what YOU think Auburn should look for in a new HC candidate. I know this likely will not be what we get, but I wanted to check to see what you would look for given the circumstances.

10:02 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I work under the assumption that he'll be fired.

If there is obvious improvement -- and the team goes wins four or five more games -- that saves Tuberville.

Anything less than that, I'm tracking down trustees.

And ... even if he wins five, there is a significant minority of Important People who still want him gone.

10:02 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I disagree Steve, I'm sure the coaches will spin it like you say to a possible future OC. However, I don't think the new OC will come in blindly believing everything they hear from the staff. Unless it's just someone desperate for a job.

My thoughts on tonight's game.

I wrote this in August:
Well, Auburn fans, we asked for tougher out-of-conference opponents, and for the second year in a row, the football schedulers have delivered with another tough team from the Big East. Forget about all of the tripe you'll read about the spread vs. the spread as these two offensive schemes are very different. WVU has experience and tons of speed. Auburn has the kind of defense that works well against a spread option offense (speedy LBs - see Florida 2006 & 2007). Can WVU's defense handle Auburn's offense (which should be in full stride at this point)?

Most of that still applies except the last sentence about the AU offense being in full stride. The AU offense isn't even in steady skip at this point.

WHAT I EXPECT
I think Auburn will employ the smashmouth, ACE formation stuff used in the first quarter or so of the Vandy game. The question is what will the offense do when WVU (who's defense may be undersized, but is no slouch) adjusts. The AU defense will play assignment ball and try to correct mistakes from the Arkansas game where a "terrible" offense moved the ball at will.

In the end, the X-factors are Pat White and Noel Devine - both backs like Michael Smith with the speed to hurt Auburn if they can hang around long enough in the game.

Prediction: WVU 20 Auburn 14

Hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

10:03 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

If I was in command, I'd keep Tuberville ($6 million is a lot of money to me) and demand a massive offensive overhaul. I'm talking new OC and at least two assistants to come with him.

I don't think Auburn is terminal. I think the offense is terminal.

10:04 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

eddie, 50-17? Unless the defense and kicking game scores about 36 of those 50, I don't see that happening, or perhaps 50 is the number of yards in the first half, and 17 is the second.

I do think Jay's 24-10 guess is probably realistic. I do expect this team to come together.

I do think Jay may be being realistic in thinking CTT is gone. College football is a big money enterprise these days and there isn't much patience.

It does appear that CTT has always had troubles with his offense. If it isn't smash mouth, it isn't working. I hope CTT realizes that something has to be changed with our offensive coaching staff. I believe that something may very well begin with Knox. It also has to involve letting the OC do what he wants, including the hiring and firing of offensive coaches.

"Chip on Shoulder" Origin- The saying originated during the nineteenth century in the United States, where people wanting a physical fight would carry a chip of wood on their shoulder, daring others to knock it off. Printed citations of this include the Long Island Telegraph, a New York newspaper, which on May 20th, 1830, printed "When two churlish boys were determined to fight, a chip would be placed on the shoulder of one, and the other demanded to knock it off at his peril."

Regarding tonight's game I think we've got a good shot. We've still go a pretty good coach who's determined (from what he says) to right the ship and has had a week and a half to prepare. WVU seems to have a HC who may be in over his head. So they're problems may be every bit as bad, if not worse than ours.

I wonder if having a chip on your shoulder has anything to do with knocking your block off?

Dang, I knew a bunch of crap would go down while I was out of town. It's taken me all morning to catch up.

I agree with Monica and am so over this Franklin thing. I guess being in a city where people dont even know where Auburn is, let alone care about horrible offense or coaching changes was a bit therapuetic.

It's game day! WAR EAGLE!

Steve...You don't see the block of wood on the opposing team's shoulder? :)

At the moment I can't even focus on the other team. Whether we win or lose seems more to do with us rather than them. This isn't a great WV team. They hired Stewart as HC after the warm fuzzy they got in the bowl game. He has made the adjustments to give us a shot at winning. Hopefully between Stewart's adjustments and Tuberville's, we have a chance. I am hoping that Ziemba is tickled to be in a three point stance and when he starts ripping heads off, it won't be a player on our team.

11:18 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Agreed, but this WV team is like ours in ways. They still have a lot of weapons and can be a pretty good club. We need to dominate the line of scrimage. If we can do that, we should be in great shape.

I mentioned in the capmfire that BOT were ready to get rid of Tubbs with a buyout offer but he wanted the whole package and they did not want to give it him. He wet on their parade Monday and now they are willing to let him and the tean twist in the wind. If he loses more games they feel the fans will be on their side and it is easier to send him packing. Also heard the 6mil has been raised and another 4 coming for the new guy.

I'm just sayin'.

Of course Tuberville wants the full $6 million.

He'd be an idiot to settle for anything less.

AU 28 WVU 10, 1 special teams TD, 1 defensive TD. Tonight is the night it clicks! I've said that the past two games, third time is a charm.

11:27 AM
Blogger michael said...

Tim, are you pretending to be Serpico and/or Cobra Commander?

I am going to punch the lights out of the next guy I see with wood chips on his shoulder. When he is stunned, I'll say, "Well didn't you know woodchips on your shoulder means you want to fight? It's been that way since the 1800s you moron!"

11:28 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed, my contract says $6M if I get fired, you want to give me less? Are you serious? Why'd we have a buyout clause?

11:28 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Dang it folks!!! Now I am real nervous. I do view this game as the biggest of the year. If this isn't a must win, it is as close to a must win as we will have. If we loose tonight, the Ole Miss game looks very tough. I do think Ole Miss probably has a better team than WV.

11:29 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

vrga- If it clicks and we score 14 points. I dread the rest of the year.

Jay G,

Is Bobby in the small minority that wants Tubs gone no matter what? I'm assuming yes since he let them use his jet to find a coach. I don't have a jet, but when I do, I won't lend it to just anyone.

Eddie, I'd consider two offensive TDs a huge accomplishment at this point, of course, we build from here and score two TDs, two extra points and a field goal next week. It's all about building momentum.

Look, every Anonymous poster is that Tim guy, I am sure of it now. He just poses as other people at various times. As such, I vote we refer to all Anonymous posters from here on out as "Tim."

My loud rock music for tailgating today will be one song and one song only. "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. I swear 'fo Jesus that song gets me jacked and really, really focused on the task at hand. If Auburn loses tonight it's not because I didn't do my part.

11:42 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I vote Yay to Tim.

Shesaid- as long as it is not "livin' on Prayer" it rocks.

11:43 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hmmm, perhaps anonymous posters would be better referred to as "Timmy". I am a South Park fan.

My concern over the offense is that we get too predictable. Someone mentioned earlier that we will see the A formation a lot. In my mind, that is about as creative as the "Jumbo Package", the biggest offensive innovation of the last...um, wait, nevermind.

11:45 AM
Blogger Monica said...

When I went back and read Chatroll archives I saw lots I missed before. Michael and Shesaid are freakin hilarious.

I haven't heard anyone say, "I swear 'fo Jesus" in forever! Love it.

From this point forward all anonymous posters will be called Tim (at least by me).

Jay - I hope you ate your Wheaties. That's a harsh schedule you're on today and tomorrow.

Welcome home, Kristina!

No "Livin on a Prayer" ever! I may not keep my hopes for AU football realistic (we can win all games plzthxbye) but I am never going to enjoy hearing that song played by the band in Jordan-Hare. That, and I'm so sick of Crazy Train that I even change the station in the car if it comes on now.

11:47 AM

I see hidden hostility in Franklin's post. He also managed to convince me that Tuberville did the right thing getting rid of him.

11:48 AM

Found a better song. Joe Cocker - Have a little faith in me. We must remember the prognosticating ability of Senator Holtz. When all hope is lost, Tuberville finds a way to win.

AU-20 WV-6 Pat White doesnt make it through the first quarter so no TD's for the mountaineers..special team and D combine for 14 points and Kodi runs one more in for 6.. now subtract a point for Byrum and there you go. Now go out and make some money

Monica - thanks for the shoutout, I am here for the Hotties. Check out my blog at www.futileexercises.blogspot.com if you want more of my quips.

eddie4AU - speed reading classes are a good call. Also, the chat stuff pretty much makes my head blow up. Someone will answer someone else, and then it's like a puzzle to figure out whose question they are answering. A good rule of thumb is to skip 10 posts back. I am getting better at it, though.

We stress good communication in my profession, it's funny how something that seems so simple can wreck everything. Sounds like CTF wasn't the best communicator and CTT / BBQ Crue maybe was used to having an OC who talked more to them (Borges?)

JayG was Borges a better communicator in your opinion?

I'd also like to state that our WR coaching is awful and is a problem that should be addressed at the end of this season. That pretty much goes for QB's too.

12:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay, all the talk of Franklin being a poor fit etc. lead me to this question- did CTT really want Franklin or was Franklin forced on him? His comments on CTT meeting with him only 4-5 times in his time there was mind-boggling. I know there is another side to the story of what happened, but whatever thoughts one may have of Franklin he has always struck me as a straight shooter.
