The Tuesday chatter

Hey everyone. It's been a weird Tuesday. We're all so used to this being a big information day, but everything was shifted back. I'm sure you're OK with that. The wait is almost over.

Here are a few things to share:

TEMPERATE TUBS: Tuberville is not a cold-weather guy. In fact, I think Auburn is about as far north as he likes to travel. He received a call this afternoon from Jimmy Perry, the team's director of operations, who already is in Morgantown, W.Va. He reported cold temperatures even in the sunshine.

``You know how I feel about cold weather," Tuberville said. ``I'll be so bundled up that people won't recognize me on Thursday."

INDOOR FACILITY UPDATE: There appears to be some renewed chatter about building an expansive indoor facility. The football team currently uses a 60-yard building immediately north of their practice fields, though Tuberville said in February that a bigger facility would be preferable.

Tuberville and a pair of university spokesmen told me today that they aren't aware of any official changes to the project's status, but it's still something worth mentioning.

To review, the project would entail some significant work with the massive drainage basin that flows south out of Jordan-Hare Stadium. If that is squared away, the preliminary plan is to close Biggio Drive and build the new, multi-purpose facility on grounds formerly used by the track & field teams.

You can see that on the map; it's the gray area on the left. The football practice fields are directly to the east of that.

Preliminary cost estimates were in the $10-$15 million range. Auburn has a lot of money tied up in the new basketball arena ($90 million+) and its associated projects, so indoor-facility funding seems scarce.

TEZ TALKS IT UP: Here are some excerpts from an interview with Tez Doolittle, the happy-go-lucky defensive tackle.
  • On the rumors about Tuberville: "I haven't heard anything about his job being in jeopardy and whatnot. People are still worried about who's going to be the coordinator and this and that but that's all we've heard about."

  • On the offensive changes: "They get to put their hand down on the ground and they come off the ball a little harder. I always heard Tyronne Green crying about being in the two-point stance about how he can't get push and stuff like that. Yesterday, went against the offense the last couple periods of practice and I saw Tyrone get down in a three-point stance so I was thinking 'I know they ain't about to pass' so I came off hard and I kind of jacked him up a little bit and he got mad yesterday so we were laughing about that. So I guess they like having their hand down in the dirt and stuff."

  • On his feelings about the new offense (Doolittle was a fullback in high school): "I want to run the ball, basically. I want to get back in my high school days and try to run the ball on the goal line. I was joking to coach Gran about that. I was like 'Coach, when we run the ball and get down on the goal line, let me pound that thing in.' We were just joking and laughing about that."

  • On WVA quarterback Pat White, a Daphne native: "He's very good with the option. When he sees the defensive ends crashing down, he's going to pull it down and run it. If he's in the pocket, he can kill you with his arm and his feet. So he's a good quarterback."

Yeah, good to know they haven't spent time fixing that little obvious stance secret. Maybe W Virginia didn't notice what the common viewer did in the Arkansas game, though.

In times of trouble and despair, I always know jay g has my back and that's a great feeling! Thanks man.
On to the game, I wish we would just run the ball close to 35 times with about 7 to 10 deep balls mixed in. I have a feeling that's what well do, but getting disappointed watching auburn is something I am now accustomed to.

5:15 PM
Blogger Monica said...

ha ha PF! You are such a sweatervest kinda guy. Well, they are talking like it's going to be single digits. At the END of the game it will only be 40 ish, but I guess it's all relative.

Why are you going to NC?

5:17 PM
Blogger Monica said...

By the way, today was gorgeous here in WV. The leaves are so pretty right now, really crisp blue skies (nothing like we get in Alabama, but very nice) and so those of you who'll be coming up will enjoy it. I should gripe about WV so much. It's gorgeous, fantastic small mouth fishing, white water rafting and sking (but I don't ski). Ok, that's my mea culpa to WV.

5:19 PM
Blogger Jeremy Eubanks said...

Mon, I have no idea where I'm going. Somewhere in the northwest part of the state.I'm more just along for the ride...I spent a season at Snowshoe. Tried to see as much of the state as I could. WV was beautiful, all the way until my snowboarding accident took me to the trauma center in Morgantown. Scratch that, the amount of morphine I was given made it even more beautiful.

5:35 PM

I don't think you COULD seem any hotter or brighter than you do right now. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm just basking in the afterglow.

5:36 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do like that Auburn has been focused on facilities other than just a bigger stadium. JH is impressive as is. I do think the recruits will be more impressed by the other facility upgrades.

Having Doolittle run the ball in short yardage is actuall interesting. I had forgotten he was a fullback.

As for the lineman being in a three point stance, that concerns me. If it is only when we are under center, that is probably cool. If it is only when we are running, that is not so good. It would be very interesting if the three point stance were regardless of formation.

Is it too late to follow up on Ingle Martin? He did in fact transfer from UF to my alma mater- FU- -and lead us to the brink of the national championship game before losing to Youngstown St(?) I think? Anyway, he had a naked boot run that was WIDE OPEN for the touchdown late in that one (he was fast, especially for 1-AA) but lost his footing on the astroturf and went down.

He was initially drafted by the Packers to back up Rodgers, who backed up Favre. I think he'd be attractive to alot of teams as a
3rd string QB, because he can also serve as a backup punter-- making him more valuable.

I always thought Tubs was one of those guys protecting his skin from the sun with the long sleeves in August and September. Turns out he's just a lot like my great-grandmother. Anything below 80 and he's freezing.

6:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have been thinking about our offense ever since reading Doolittle's comment about him carrying the ball.

I think we see a lot of the I formation. I say this because I see two options here: we pass a lot out of the spread, or we go with power football in the I formation. I don't see the spread option as being much of an option since WV has to be very experienced against defending against that considering they practice against White.

So, since we have to either pass out of the spread or run the I, it looks like the only option is to run the I.

I can't see us attempting to beat WV running the spread option. If it comes down to who can best run the spread option I would like to officially say uncle right now.

For no apparent reason and totally without justification....I'm feelin' good about the WVa game. Maybe I have gulped down Zenmaster Tubs latest ruminations

Mon...I flew into Huntington WVa to look at some land for a shopping ctr. We landed on a graded off mountain top, rented a car and drove downhill to town. On the way back "up" to the airport, we pondered therunway length. Cool setting by the Uhio river.

8:35 PM

I saw the South Carolina QB take the hit from the ref. I am not sure what was going through the guys head, but my impression was that he got out of position, possibly day dreaming, and suddenly realized he couldn't get out of the way, so he used his shoulder. I can't believe an official would do that intentionally, but it was funny.

As far as the weather goes, the 2000 Iron Bowl was miserable. That was the first game in Tuscaloosa since the early 1900's and I remember some Bama fans saying before the game that Auburn wouldn't win in T-Town unless hell froze over. Well by the end of the game hell was frozen over.

The 1993 Auburn/Arkansas game was miserable as well.

The opposite of that, I don't think I've ever been hotter at a game than the 2001 Ole Miss game. It was an early kick and I think it was something like 97 degrees and very humid. I think I bought 5 or 6 of the $3.00 bottled waters that day.
