Looking at AU @ UM

Hey everyone. Thanks for stopping by on a fine Friday; a spooky one. I also want to compliment the HOTTIES for providing so much support, both on the blog and on the Campfire, for our newest Ring of Fire members. Our warm community is what distinguishes us.

SCHEDULE UPDATE: Since Auburn is on the road, that means I'll be holding the traditional "Ask an Auburn Beat Writer" segment tonight. We were doing this before Campfires came along ... but it's basically a Campfire in disguise. Live chat. Questions answered. Etcetera. So come kick it with an Auburn Beat Writer. I'm thinking 10 p.m. CDT.

OK. Here is today's content:

POSITION-BY-POSITION:
QUARTERBACK
Advantage: Ole Miss
Auburn enjoyed more consistent play out of Kodi Burns last week, but UM's Jevan Snead is a much more refined player. He has a great arm, knows how to use it and can run in a pinch.

RUNNING BACKS
Advantage: Ole Miss
It's unclear what Auburn has here. Ben Tate played only sparingly against West Virginia and Brad Lester is struggling with a knee issue. Ole Miss has a decent tailback in Cordera Eason and intriguing elements in Dexter McCluster and Enrique Davis.

RECEIVERS
Advantage: Ole Miss
Auburn has two playmakers in Rod Smith and Tommy Trott. The Rebels have watched McCluster excel in a variety of roles. Shay Hodge and Mike Wallace are legitimate players as well.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Advantage: Auburn
Ole Miss has the best player here in Michael Oher, but Auburn has plenty of talent. Have the Tigers been good? Not really. Still, I believe this group is on the verge of a breakthrough. It could happen tomorrow.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Advantage: Auburn
This could go either way. Peria Jerry is an outstanding tackle and a lot better than most people realize. With that said, Sen'Derrick Marks and Tez Doolittle are excellent players as well. Throw in Zach Clayton and the Tigers have plenty of brawn.

LINEBACKERS
Advantage: Ole Miss
Auburn's linebackers didn't play well at West Virginia last week, missing tackles with surprising frequency. Ole Miss doesn't have the same amount of depth or talent, but their guys are playing more consistently right now.

DEFENSIVE BACKS
Advantage: Auburn
The Tigers suffered some serious busts in the defensive backfield at WVU. Still, this is a talented group. Jerraud Powers says he's better after playing half speed with a hamstring injury last week and Walt McFadden has been a bright spot.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Advantage: Ole Miss
Josh Shene has connected on 12 of his 13 field-goal kicks. Mike Wallace is a great kickoff-return guy. Auburn has the advantage at punter, but the Rebels seem to have a legitimate leg up here.

COACHING
Advantage: Auburn
Tommy Tuberville has his faults and the program doesn't seem all that healthy right now. Still, this coaching staff has made a lot of correct calls through the years. I like Houston Nutt a lot. He's great as the lovable loser, but the Rebels are a favorite today. Nutt is less effective that way.

SCOUTING REPORTS:
Ole Miss
Jevan Snead (No. 4)
6-3, 215, Soph.
Last game: 16-of-31 for 192 yards, 1 TD; 5 rushes for 23 yards (vs. Alabama, 10/18)
Scouting report: Snead, a transfer from Texas, has an outstanding arm. He can throw deep balls with authority. He understands how to alter pace according to situation. The problem is that Snead is highly aware of his raw talent and takes too many risks as a result. He has no problem throwing into double coverage because he considers himself capable of making every throw work. He can be a liability in that sense. Snead isn't a fast runner. He is intuitive in the pocket, though, and can escape pressure. He has some great years ahead of him.

Auburn
QB Kodi Burns (No. 18)
6-2, 205, Soph.
Last week: 13-of-21 for 111 yards, 1 TD; 15 carries for 82 yards (vs. WVU)
Scouting report: Burns was given a chance to play a full game last week and showed signs of progress. He played particularly well during the first half. Burns escaped from pressure at appropriate times. He made several accurate passes on the run. He also showed a refined ability to run effectively in space. Burns looked like a different player in the second half, though, and seemed to lose confidence. That has been an issue for him. Burns has a very strong arm that allows him to throw accurately beyond 30 yards. His mechanics are inconsistent. That's why he struggles to make simple throws at times. Until he learns to repeat his throwing motion, Burns will be limited.

Walter McFadden (No. 6)
6-0, 177, Jr.
Last week: 2 tackles and 1 interception (vs. WVU)
Scouting report: McFadden is a good example of a player who is more valuable than his statistics. The junior has decent speed, decent acceleration and decent size. What makes McFadden so important is his innate understanding of his position. He understands his responsibilities and handles them. He also thinks along with the quarterback, which puts McFadden in good position for interceptions more often than most defensive backs. McFadden takes pride in being available; injuries never have been an issue.

KEYS TO THE GAME:
Auburn offense
Ole Miss is a very powerful team along the line of scrimmage. Auburn ditched its passing schemes last week in favor of a more direct running attack, which yielded significant dividends until West Virginia made adjustments. Are the Tigers trying to re-invent themselves as a power team? If so, they'll have to play with more ferocity along the offensive front today. Kodi Burns is best when given a peripheral role, which is what happened during his first-half renaissance last week. When pressed into a leading role during the second half, Burns was less reliable. Auburn needs to rely on its tailbacks to blaze the trail. If that's going to happen, Brad Lester and Ben Tate need to regain their early-season swagger.

Auburn defense

What in the world has happened here? Auburn now has allowed more than 400 yards in consecutive games, which is a far cry from its early-season pace. The problems seem two fold: Paul Rhoads' one-dimensional approach to fronts and a general discouragement. Unlike Will Muschamp, who spent hours searching for new ways to package the same defensive scheme, Rhoads prefers to perfect a few fronts. The problem is that the Tigers have an established defensive identity now and without much variation to throw off opponents, Auburn is struggling to make it all work. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt is a good strategist, too. As far as discouragement, the Tigers clearly played at a lower level once the Mountaineers pulled ahead by 10 last week. With the team's offense struggling this badly, falling behind seems like a terminal problem.

A couple of things JG...

Do you have a score prediction?

Do you think that the passing of Amendment 1 next Tuesday would influence AU's decision to pony up the buyout money for CTT?

And ..dont you think you need to have a place in the RoF for us long time friends of the program who dont get a chance to post much due to work?

I don't like score predictions anymore. Gave em up.

Amendment 1? Is that the one where Yuengling becomes the Official Beer of Alabama? (I have no idea what Amendment 1 involves.)

Yes, we should have a separate designation for long-term HOTTIES. You certainly qualify. I'll ponder this.

Jay,

I still question Powers effectiveness. If he's not 100%, I think he is more of a liability back there. He was obviously not full speed against WV and was tentative on tackling. Earlier in the year he appeared to be Auburn's only "head hunter" on defense and his injury was and is a huge blow to the defense.

Anything where the receiver has to cut or cross he's always way behind them.

Jay, I am curious, why did you give up predictions? I think this is very important as far as games go. Lose it and we are staring 5-7 in the face. Win it and we could pull off a UGA or UA upset with the added confidence.

Our lack of speed at safety concers me against Ole Miss. Snead has the kind of arm that can burn us all day. I think the key will be how much pressure the D Line can bring. Here's to Marks, Doolittle, AC and Goggans having a great game. wde my fellow hotties!

Both of our safeties have been playing out of position a lot int he last few games. I chalk that up to youthful exuberance (both are Sophs.) more than anything. I hope it is them just trying to make a play and missing and not like the "Mario Fannin Syndrome" where they have no idea about the other side adjusting.

I'm not normally a pessimist, but in addition to the numerous problems that we can't seem to fix...Ole Myth just matches up to beat us. Similar talent right now but has better matchups where it counts.

In order for AU to win....Kodi will need to roll out to pass/run and we must get/hit WRs open deep. This will open up some running game. This is a lot to expect from Kodi and the WRs that I have seen play so far.

We will get some pressure Snead, but not enough. Our walking wounded DBs will have to find a way.

Does Rhoads not believe in blitzing much? How many sacks does the defense have this year? I think getting pressure on the QB is going to be a big key to this game and the Bama game.

I am hoping AU wins, but dont see anything pointing to that actually happening. Maybe this is the week where they start to put SOMETHING together, but until I see proof there's not much reason in thinking we can win.

Interesting that you have Smith and Trott listed as playmakers for AU. I think that explains why defenses have NO fear of getting beat deep and keep so many people up front. Maybe it is not this simple but couldn't AU at least attempt some deep passes or is the blocking so bad they don't think the play would have time to develop?

Subject: Mike McNeil

Living in Mobile, I saw the guy play. He was highly coveted due to his size. He looks like Nick Cannon, yes, Mariah Careys husband, and he hit like Mariah as well. The guy has good speed to come up and help with the run, even though he doesnt hit hard. But as a safety, man he has been out of position all season long. Burnt city, toast..en fuego, help me out here..thoughts?

9:51 AM

McNeil -- not a head-hunter. This is true.

Also true is that Auburn doesn't blitz very often; far less often than when Muschamp was in control.

PDWT, as I posted before "both of our safeties have been playing out of position a lot int he last few games."

MM and ZE need to have a good game in order for the defense to work well against Sneed and Ole Miss.

My game prediction - I used to be right on, but this year you cant tell. If you say you know then you are lying. Why? Because everytime we get ahead we lose in the 2nd half, so even if we are up 14 points in the 1st qtr I will feel like we are gonna lose, why? because it has happened all season. God forbid we get behind, then I know we are in trouble because our offense has shown it cant produce alot of points.

In the beginning I did not think much of it because on defense we were playing so well, but now it is clear, we need to be two deep to make it. Some teams go injury free all year, this just hasnt been the case for Auburn this year.

What kind of game is Kodi going to need to have to get the Tigers a win? Above average? Excellent? Game of his life? We are to the point where we are living(and dying) by Kodi Burns play. I think he will eventually be an above average player for us, but he's not there yet.

Also, are any HOTTIES making it to the game? I am leaving today for Memphis then to Oxford in the morning. I couldn't pass up a trip to the Grove while still at AU...

My wife and I are very superstitious, we were certain shirts to the games, if we are home and auburn scores, etc. or does something good we make the other person stay in the other room, or not change what they are doing, its bad we have to watch the auburn game alone or with other "true" auburn fans, I go to church on sundays, but auburn games make me spew obscenties, like the kid in the christmas story.

10:23 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Caleb, I don't know if we can expect that from Kodi. At this point, he's running parts of 2 or 3 offenses so just managing that is task.

If we can figure out how to adjust to "phase 2" on offense and play a complete game, winning won't be totally on the defense's shoulders.

Not sure that can be done in mid/late season though.

10:27 AM

Yeah it looks we try to play a lot of Cover 2 but we get out of position if the play takes longer than 4 seconds to develop down the field.

We have team speed on defense. I'm curious as to why crossing routes have been so hard for the defense to stop this season.

Hopefully Auburn will run a little play action this week. There really realy really needs to be a little variation. I mean nearly everytime Auburn's lineman go in a three-point stance the Tigers run, and everytime they stand in a two-point they pass. It can't be that difficult for the opposing defenses to see that.

10:32 AM

Guys,
I will hold out out optimisum (sp.?) that we actually play a game completely for 4 quarters. Ole Miss is not all that much more talented, just i think its all about execution and repetition and believing in what works and following through with it and not giving up.
Maybe i am drinking the KoolAid, but i believe in CTT when he says that we are close...we just need to play like our hair is on fire and go out there and "Act like a bunch of Crazed Dogs". Take it to Ole Miss and Hit them in the Mouth and be physical.....

kmo.....The problem with running play action passes is that you first have to be able to run the ball in order to set up play action. If OM will keep the defense backed up, we can do that. We need to find a way to throw deep to keep them backed up. The rollout is about all I can come up with to move the defense around and create an opening deep.

Hey..I hope all is fixed tommorow and we run the table the rest of the year, but I've already lost enough this year thinking that our talent would overcome.

Someone asked why don't we throw deep? Well.....we do try, but the WRs are covered so well that it would not be advisable. Looking at the film, you see numerous times that the QB looks deep, then either passes short or scrambles. AU fans have complained for 3 years that we don't throw deep. It is not for a lack of calling deep pass plays, its that we seldom have anyone anywhere near open to throw to.

In terms of your breakdown, I tend to disagree with the linebackers and DBs, more so with the DBs. We should have the best set of linebackers, but I can see going with Ole Miss based upon recent performance. As for the DBs, I think we are extremely limited in terms of depth. If we go to a nickle or dime package, we gots trouble.

Another question. Do you all remember us putting a receiver in motion pre-snap, he entire season? The only shift I've ever seen us make from the spread is after the meercat look, the RB switches from one side of the QB to the other. WOW! That's alot of shifting to confuse the Defense. I'm sure the Mike LB is saying "hmm. I've got the TB. Wait they shifted. Nope, still got him"

I used to be very superstitous where everything had to be a certain way...including listening to the Who on Friday's and Springsteen on Saturday on the way to the game. I wore the same All Auburn/All Orange shirt, same cap same everything every Saturday during football season. I even walked the same way from the car to the stadium. That was my ritual during the 2004 season and I did it all the way until the Arkansas game in 2006 and at that point I realized what I did really didn't matter. So I just go with whatever.

So, we totally perserved the season and brought it home!

hoopie, I don't think we necessarily need to hit the deep ball, but some mid range passing over the middle on crossing routes would be nice. I would also like to see more of an option attack from the spread formation.

Just Win AU, I think the key to the Bama game will be simple. Control the clock and slow down the Bama rushing attack. They are good enough where they can run against most teams when the other team knows they are going to run.

patdyeswildturkey, you bring up an interesting point and one of my more bizarre thoughts. We might actually end up better if we are behind early and the offense has to pull off one of those got to drives. I really think that Kodi needs to win some confidence from the other offensive players.

Mr. Sensible, I think the lack of blitzing is more of a scheme thing with Rhodes. He is less of a risk taker and more of a fundamentals guy. He wants to limit the YACs and make the offense execute more plays without a mistake. He has proven that can work. It is just a different philosophy than Muschamp's.

James in B'hamm Etheridge seems to be pretty good against the run. As for McNeil, his hitting ability disappoints me.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

"We might actually end up better if we are behind early and the offense has to pull off one of those got to drives. "

Mmmmm...I would agree if this was last year's team. Seems like Cox, etc played better when we were behind and there were less than 2 minutes left. Not sure I've seen this team has the attitude to come from behind and then the execution to pull it off even if they did.

If Kodi has a great game, I will be so teed off about the whole Chris Todd thing. But maybe he will stink it up and I won't have to think about what might have been had he been the guy from the beginning and had had cupcakes to play at first to get his confidence up.

eddie4aum, I wouldn't call it suicidal. I just think we are in a crucial year in terms of the future of the Auburn program. I do believe Tuberville made the right choice to go with the spread, but we have to find an OC that can make it work and Tuberville has to let the OC do his job.

Caleb Rotton, I am off the opinion that the more yards Burns has rushing, the more trouble we are in. We have to have more playmakers on offense.

Agree on inverse relationship between Burns' rushing yards and O production. Don't know whether it is because it means the Oline play is bad, or maybe because the WR's arent' getting open. Either way, I'd rather us be throwing it intermediate-ly down the field.

1:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think we have to look at what we have learned from this season. I will not get excited if we are up by 10 or 14 at halftime. I think around 28 might be a comfortable lead.

I wonder what halftime adjustments we have been making. I do think we need to make adjustments at halftime even if things are going well. Go to the backup plan regardless, at least on offense.

1:21 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

Agreed. We should absolutely make changes coming out in the second half (not trick plays), just change up formations, or what we are running. Then, if that stalls, we can go back to what we were doing and try that.

Blogger WDEwg said...

I beat this horse last week, but thought I'd bring up again.

Somebody pointed out that Burns played well in the second half, but seemed to lose confidence and be ineffective in the 2nd half.

I'll throw out there again, could it be from the total dog cussing he got from CTT after his shoe string throw to Trott on 3rd down after the successful onside kick? A play that i believe wasn't going to get us a 1st down, even if completed?

Thought that was unnecessary for CTT to go nuts on him right there, and might have damaged his confidence.

For those that would say "well, he's got to be able to take that and not be affected. Normally, I'd say 'yes'-- but Burns has been jerked around his entire time at AU. I think right now the coaches should be looking to build him up. Feel free to rip him when he is a 2nd or 3rd year starter down the road.

just my 2 cents

1:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

WDEwgm, I have wondered about that play too. It may be that Tuberville was upset about something different. I don't think the pass was an issue. We weren't getting a first down with it and it didn't look like Burns could scramble for it. Perhaps there was another receiver open that I didn't see. Regardless, it didn't look like Burns has a lot of time to make a decision. Tuberville should have probably laid off him there.

For the Todd bashers with the noodle arm comments, he was our best option early. He did a good job of making smart decisions with a weak arm. As the season progressed, the arm degressed. Fortunately, Burns has learned to make better decisions.

If you would like to bash Todd, bash him on his ego and not being able to come in and contribute from the bench. That is my issue with Todd, not his arm.

Ken Stabler had a weak arm, though ugly passes, but made plays. Early on Todd was able to do that to some extent, but only if he was the man. If he came off the bench, he needed about a quarter of warmup time.

Good observation, wdewg, that did seem excessive and would probably have caused a lot of kids to sull up after it.

I was listening to the AU radio team with the sound off on the tv - a much saner way to watch and AU game than listening to the tv morons and bammer lovers. Stan White said it was all about the fact that a WR was wide open 20 yds down field and Cody never looked at him. You couldn't see the WR on the tv screen, and its hard for me to believe that one of ours was wide open, but anyway that's what Stan said.

But I don't think Tubs is helping things by chewing out players in such a public fashion.

Good news for AU - I just found out that I have to go to a funeral at 2 pm tomorrow, which means I'll miss the 2nd half. In nearly 50 years of following AU football, I've either been to the game, watched on tv, or at least listened on the radio to all but 3 of them. Auburn easily won all 3. The trend continues tomorrow.

I just hope that nobody tells me anything about the game while I'm at the funeral and I can get back home and hit the play button without knowing what's happened.

WarEagleRK, that is just the point. It wasn't his arm strength that is the reason he was the best choice. It was his decision making. After about the 3rd game, he didn't have any arm left.

By the way folks, earlier in the season we mentioned a game that might be the worst Auburn had ever played. Some speculated it was against Georgia Tech. Suddenly I remembered a game against Nutt and Arkansas when they rushed for something like 600 yards against us. Well, maybe it wasn't 600, but over 400 I believe. I think it was when Jones was their QB. That was the worst performance I can recall from an Auburn defense.

Steve,

I agree as far as play calling, Todd was the best option early in the year.

That was the 2002 Arkansas game...the bad thing about that game was, we were leading until 2 mins to go before the half and Duval had punt blocked that set up a score...that was right after Fred Talley had an 80 yard TD run, both in the last min and a half to take a 17-10 lead to being down 24-17.

We came out in the 2nd half and didn't do anything.

It was after that game the infamous "high school offense" quote from Tub about Campbell was stated.

That 2002 game we were so focused on stopping Matt Jones that we forgot to stop held him to negative yards rushing, but gave up 240 yards to Talley...then Jones finally busted one for about 80 with just a couple of mins to go once we had completely given up.

That was also the game where Dansby & Thomas both had their draft stock fall because they couldn't make a tackle and started yelling at their teammates during the game instead of tetting the team lined up.

2:58 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

WarEagleRK, that was the game and I believe it is the most frustrated I have ever been watching an Auburn game.

As for Todd, he reached the point where he couldn't get the ball where he wanted. At that point, it didn't matter that he knew where the ball needed to go.

What frustrated me about him is I think his play after they let Kodi run a series dropped off considerably. I am not sure if he was trying to do too much to win the job, but all he had to really do was keep making smart decisions. He didn't do that.

I think that was the biggest frustration at the beginning of the season because it was obvious Kodi had the most potential, but his decision making just wasn't there. Now that he seems to be making a better choice of when to run, he seems much improved. He is setting in the pocket and firing the ball.

Against MSU last season I knew would were going to loose when they kept Kodi in the entire time. He was a great change of pace, but MSU isn't the team to be predictable against. They always tend to have a solid defense, particularly against the run.

3:01 PM
Blogger michael said...

More about tubs chewing out Burns: it probably wasn't wise, but when you see someone make a mental error that could cost you your job, you might be spittin mad too. I would rather he didn't do it in such a public way because it looks bad and it probably hurts Kodi's confidence, but if Kodi doesn't want to get chewed out, then he should make the right play. Pretty simple, right?

So in summation: Tubs shouldn't have flipped out like that, but I would probably do the same thing in those circumstances, and I think a lot of us would.

3:04 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

MSU the problem was the turnovers. Fannin had a fumble, Cox threw two Int's, Burns another one. Burns also had a fumble as well. So 5 total turnovers. Fannin's was huge as it was around the 15.

Had Cox not had his first pass returned for a TD, we probably win that game going away. However the week before we had 5 turnovers vs South Florida, and I think it got in our heads against State and we couldn't stop the negative momentum.

It was a tough week. The kid made a dumb play. Tubs got emotional. He usually gives the sad "I'm disappointed in you, son" face while shaking his head. This time he got verbal. Give the guy a break.

I'm surprised that his head hasn't spun around with steam coming out of those big ol' ears of his channeling Linda Blair's devil voice in the Exorcist the way this team has played.

One of my criticisms of Shula was how he looked panicked and the players pick up on that. Tuberville doesn't usually look panicked, but he did to some degree then.

You also make a good point about the refs. Tuberville going wacko on the refs and Muschamp pulling him back may have won us a game against Florida. I do think it inspired the players.

Jay, having some kind of rules of conduct we could reference people to might be helpful. I don't mean a 50 page document that would require me to get my lawyer to review, but something short and to the point. I am not sure how it would be applied.

I think one of the things we have to remember is that new people coming here may be use to a much different forum environment. There may be an adjustment period.

For those who missed it, Tim threatened to kill Jan Terri. This sort of blasphemy will get the quick delete button here at HABOTN.

Well I missed the fireworks from Tim, but not Tim.

Everyone have a happy and safe Halloween. I'm out to go to a Trunk or Treat with my best friend and his son, then me and the wife are going to go somewhere so I'll probably miss the campfire tonight, but I'll catch up with everyone tomorrow...also known as the day it all ends. (Hopefully in reference to the losing streak.)

Herbstreit when asked what he was going to be for Halloween.
"Auburn's offense. There is nothing as morbid and scary as that. It is deader than a zombie."

Gang, I will be out with the Mrs. tonight. Hope to make Campfire, but if not I will see you all tomorrow on the game posts.

Jay: You may have provided an update on Philip Pierre Louis XIV, former King of France and current Auburn WR, but I haven't seen one. Next time you get a chance, can you find out how he's progressing? Gracias.

I spoke briefly with PPL a few weeks ago. He's in good spirits. He's rehabbing that knee. He was joking about how he can only lift weights with his "good" knee and how his lower body is off-kilter now as a result.

That'll get straightened out this winter.

why get mad if somebody doesn't agree with you..hell if somebody doesn't agree with me it might be an opprotunity to learn something or just prove how much smarter I am than that person...c'mon fake Tim. This is the only blog that has ever been able to keep me coming back. I'm just not into all that disrespectful bs. As far as registeration goes I don't know about that Jay. I didn't register right off the bat to feel this thing out then I got to "feel the heat" and said hey this is a good place to vent or rejoice with the AU family. So think carefully on the registration idea...

Thanks

I don't want to make registration necessary. I just cannot stand inappropriate commentary from anonymous posters.
