Bummer I missed an active night

I was listening to the swell "zeroes + ones" segment on Sirius' Left of Center channel tonight.

Hey, it beats singing Milli Vanilli to myself as I roll past Jasper.

I'm tired. I'll chat with you all tomorrow.

Don't think davis would come. Had a friend of mine who told me that sexton said he wasn't and he meant he wasn't coming not "nick satan" he isn't coming.

Leach seems reasonable to me although he doesn't have "the look" that we would expect from a successful HC and recruiter

Muschamp is a huge huge huge roll of the dice. i hear alot that he's the next stoops or satan but my personal thoughts are that he would be inheriting quite a bit more than either satan or stoops did in their first jobs. the fall could be potentially greater.

Don't think C. Peterson from Boise St because of some religious reasons and believe it or not that would factor in at a school like Auburn.

Gundy won't leave OSU in my opinion (he was a QB there) nor would T. Boone let him get away.

The buyout for Jim Bo Fisher would be massive although he would probably come despite being the heir apparent at FSU.

My only other thoughts would be people like Brian Kelley at Cincy, Bronco Mendenhall at BYU, Kyle Wittingham at Utah, Jim Grobe at Wake maybe a Skip Holtz, a Turner Gill, or my personal favorite dark horse Chris Hatcher from Georgia St. (maybe the next Jim Tressel)

Phillip Marshall has kind of laid it on the line in an article on Auburn Undercover. The main point is this.

"Until something concrete happens, the speculation is going to grow. It is that speculation that concerns recruits far more than a bad season. Until it’s resolved, Auburn’s football program is essentially dead in the water."

He goes further than that by quoting Houston Nutt saying we would be crazy to get rid of Tuberville.

It looks like Marchall wants to force a decision from Auburn now, and I do believe it is best.

We were predicted to lose to OM. We lost about as bad as predicted. Why the renewed venom and teeth gnashing? Why must the fans spew the same negative statements regarding what we know is going to happen each week? Seems immature.

The negative comments DO hurt the team. Like it or not, the team reads this stuff. Anyone that has played enough sports would understand this.

As far as the team dynamic...most of the time there is delicate balance between winners and losers and the fan's attitude absolutely enters into the equation.

scott

The ending to the Texas- Texas Tech game was one of the best I have ever seen. Absolutely no defense on those last two drives. Great offense.

Steve,

I agree with Phillip Marshall. Forcing a decision now helps Auburn in the long run. It can get the players focused on games and not having to answer questions about the future of CTT. It will also allow Auburn get some clarity in recruiting.

What about Chizik? I'm sure it has been mentioned and I didn't read it, but he was 26-0 as a defensive coordinater from 04-05. With all the talk about Muschamp who, as Phred has pointed out, might be a little overhyped why not Chizik? I know his record at ISU is not good but is that because he is at ISU or not a good recruiter and HC ?

7:57 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Something came up and I listened to the 2nd half through the orange and blue lenses of the AU radio broadcast instead of watching on the tube. I've read all these comments blasting the coaches for poor playcalling. Last time I checked...our QB/WR/RBs can't learn the plays so we "simplified" the playbook to a few plays, which limits the coaches playcalling options. I just watched the DVR replay. Ensminger is no offensive genius, but he called a good enough game to win....but 3 POORLY THROWN INTERCEPTIONS stopped us.

I think I know why CTT threw up his hands on the INT at the goal line. His QB threw the ball with some of the worst passing fundamentals presently in D1 CFB, and the fans will blame the global "coaching/playcalling" as the problem. The coaches have worked with this QB as nauseum for 1 1/2 years now, he just doesn't get it and the naysaying fans would be upset next game if CTodd came in next game. I wonder if CTT threw up his hands b/c he knew the "football-ignorant" AU fans would blame playcalling or the global--"coaching" as the problem.

Is it the pain of the loss that causes fans to lose perspective?

I think you'd want a decent winning record at ISU from Chizik (Like Tub had at Ole Miss) before you have him come in at a larger program.

Sorry I missed out on the fun last night, we got Guitar Hero World Tour last night.

8:15 AM
Blogger astatguy said...

Gene Chizik has seven straight losses going at Iowa State, bad even by their standards. I felt more confident with Chizik's defenses than I did Muschamp's. Last night at TT Muschamp's defense folded when the game was on the line. Anyone remember LSU and Georgia? Turning a major program over to an unproven assistant is risky at best.

8:17 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The playcaller had to overcome 8-10 defenders in the box with substandard WRs, a middle school-sized playbook and a Qb with erractic fundamentals. Yet, if not for the INTS, we probably would have won anyway.

The coaches are reponsible to get the QB/Wrs ready to play, so on that global note the coaches failed. I clearly see a WR fundamentals problem and coaching changes are probably needed there. Even though we caught some passes..we were lucky b/c many were caught with poor fundamentals.

The reason to go to the spread was to recruit better skill players...the coaches know that we don't have good ones. If the fans will stop complaining and support the coaches, we will not chase away the better quality skill players that are presently comitted and possibly get out of the skill player problem we have. BTW, any incoming coach still has the same skill players to work with.

I agree with Hoopie. I'm not sure if Kodi can check off, but if he can he missed a lot of reads. He needs what quarterbacks can't seem to get at Auburn, coaching.

8:35 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'd probably be ok with Tub staying if he hires a proven offensive coordinator and lets them pick their own staff or bring their own staff from where they are.

Knox definately has to go, but I think to make things really work they probably all have to go except Gran and maybe Nall.

8:37 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Phillip Marshall with a really really ugly stat.

In losses to Arkansas, West Virginia and Ole Miss, Auburn has given up 1,234 yards of offense. That's an average of more than 411 yards per game. Worse, in the past two games, it has given up 504 yards rushing.

8:39 AM
Blogger dan dan the AU fan said...

Probably should have done this first but after I posted the questions I researched it a little bit. Yeh, his record at ISU is awful. I guess the reason I brought his name up is because Muschamp's name is brought up so often. CGC's defenses have been better than CWM and he has head coaching experience, not a good record, but experience.
IMO if Auburn decides to make a HC change I would like to see them go after a guy with an offensive background rather than a defensive guy. Regardless, I feel Nall and Knox need to go.

8:41 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

To a large extent, I agree with hoopie. I do think there was some bad play calling in the second quarter, but that isn't why we lost the game. Also, I do think Kodi tries to overcome technique with athletic ability. While it works to some extent, you don't get consistency that way.

8:48 AM

8:54 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Kodi doesn't set his feet when he throws a lot...plus if he throws more than a 10 yard pass, he gets too much air under it and gives the DB's a chance to get to it.

Even on the long sideline pass to Slaughter, the receiver had to slow down because the ball hung up too long otherwise it's probably a TD.

9:09 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

For those wanting Muschamp as head coach, I got a question. When is that last time Auburn hired a head coach that has never had head coaching experience before? Go ahead. Look it up. I will wait.

Okay, if you don't like that one, look at our sister school on the other side of the state. I do believe they have hired several inexperienced head coaches. Do you like the results they saw?

9:12 AM

I would also like to point out areas of improvement against Ole Miss. We finally figured out how to keep Byrum from missing a field goal.

9:18 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Good point Steve...Byrum can't miss FG's when the QB hits defenders between the numbers on the Ole Miss side of the field. It's the Zen coaching of sacrificing the team in order to not damage the pysche of the kicker.

I love it.

9:21 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

WarEagleRK, it wasn't easy to figure out, but I believe that was the strategy. Byrum's pysche is safe.

Steve,

I agree we shouldn't hire anyone without some type of head coaching experience, if this situation indeed comes down to hiring someone.

However, you can't compare what the bammers did in their hiring to a potential Auburn hiring - apples and oranges. I could just as easily say hey look at who ThUGA or OK hired to be their guys. Neither one of them had any HC experience when they took their respective jobs and in both of those examples the hires have turned out fairly well.

RE: Nutt saying AU would be crazy to fire CTT. Honestly does one coach ever say another coach should be fired? As for Muschamp and Chizik, being a head coach requires some different skills from being just a coordinator. Not saying they do or do not have these skills just that it is different being the head guy instead of just coccentrating on one area of the team. As for Muschamp he seems like a huge risk/reward kind of hire. His defenses have been inconsistient(sp)? but his personality would be a definite plus I think in recruiting. He would also bring some much-needed fire to the program. On the other hand how would his temperament go over for a period of time in one program? I am not trying to be wishy-washy on CWM but there are several ways to look at him to make an argument either way. Sorry for the long post.

9:33 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Tim, you said the 'B' word!!!

I agree that being a head coach requires different skills, and a different temperament as well.

I know some want to see a coach with passion. To some degree, passion can be good, but if you look at successful head coaches, in a lot of cases they are the ones that don't get visibly upset when things don't go their way. A head coach should project stability and never appear out of control.

Yes, there are occasions where a head coach should get vocal like the guy at OSU did for his player, he is a man, he can take it. I liked that. But in general the head coach is suppose to be the voice of reason and be able to let his staff coach. A head coach in college football is closer to being a manager.

I did some research on Crabtree. He was a high school "athlete" playing quarterback who was projected as a wide receiver in college. He committed to Texas Tech after Greg McElroy dropped his commitment to Texas Tech and committed to Alabama. I'd say Texas Tech got the better of that exchange. Ricky Williams is his cousin, but Texas never showed interest. I'll bet they were interested last night.

I do believe I am a Nutt lover, or at least I agree with him. I think we would be nuts to get rid of Tuberville. One of the best things about Auburn has been the stability we have shown. Look at how many coaches we have had since Shug Jordan retired in the mid 70s. Doug Barfield got about 5 years to turn things around. Pat Dye dominated the 80s. Terry Bowden was given around 5 seasons in the 90s. Tuberville has dominated since. Auburn has been a model for stability in terms of head coaches. I don't want to see that change.

SteveFC - am on board with that approach, at least to the point of giving him time to right the ship.

The worst thing AU could do would be to make a lateral move, and IMHO there are no super-star NC head coaches out there and available. Have read lots of names on the boards (Butch Davis, Chris Peterson, Muschamp, Lane Kiffen, Mike Leach and others) but no one who seems more than just a lateral move.

I am not for a change in the HC job. I think Tubbs will be fine. He did not all of sudden forget how to coach. I think his staff has taken a step backwards and needs to be shown the door. (how many teams have been on TV that have awesome WR's compared to ours?) Knox needs to go and soon.

BTW-Tony Franklin was at Annapolis this weekend. Interesting.

11:56 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't think we will hear anything this week that definitely says Tuberville will be the head coach next season. Maybe they come up with some kind of statement, but I bet anything they say will have room for interpretation.

I have been thinking over the firing of Franklin. In around 24 hours Tuberville went from supporting him to firing him, at least publicly. That isn't a lot of time to make a major decision. Also, he had to have talked with Jay Jacobs before doing it, knowing that Auburn had to pay Franklin whether he coached or not. Something there still doesn't sit right with me. Tuberville must have already been considering the change or Franklin did something so blatant that there was no thinking to be done over the decision.

That being said, the hiring of a new OC will be the determining factor for Tuberville remaining at Auburn. Whoever he brings in cannot be fired unless he shoots the Pope or something. Also, a big name will probably be a priority. This will be an interesting story to watch unfold.

Alright folks....no need to start testing the noose knots and gallows door for your planned your self induced "offing" just yet. The UAT boyz have to beat LSU and Fla to get to the MNC. In case you haven't noticed, there is a lot of parity in CFB.

I still think Texas is the best team in CFB. Texas played a top ten team 4 weeks in a row. That's tall order for student-athletes to get motivated to do each week. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there are some Texas fans blaming the coaches today.

Cory and Eddie,

Tuberville said yesterday that he doesn't want the players worrying about the coaches' jobs.

Tubs said "coaches go and come" and that makes me confident that he and a majority of the offensive staff will return next season. He's already fired the coach he thinks was the problem (Tony Franklin).

Tubs will bring in the new OC and maybe one other assistant. But those are the only changes I think he'll make.

12:18 PM

Speaking of recruits, I wonder how Terrance Coleman and David Conner enjoyed the game yesterday.
Coleman and Conner are Auburn commits who recently decided to start visiting other schools - Ole Miss being among them.

I'm betting Conner stays in-state, both Ole Miss and MSU are showing interest. Losing an AU football legacy (Coleman) would hurt.

I agree that the coaching staff will make the difference. A good OC will go a long way, at least on the o-side of the ball. A 5-7 record might work for us (early playing time), might work against us. Suspect it will depend upon the individual recruit.

Out for the afternoon, later tonight, gang.

Mon, I love that song, but can never keep on key when singing it(usually beer involved).

Recruits look for a fan base and admin that are fully behind the coach. The whining, complaining AU fans will chase more recruits away than losses. CN$ had the entire Bama Nation behind him even after a 6-6 regular season/loss To LaMo and look at the recruiting class.

"A change is a must to revive this program" is the kind of statement that will chase recruits away. Those Jim Rome inspired quippy, sarcastic statements should be reserved for your enemies, not the team that you love.

First of all...one losing season doesn't mean that the team needs "reviving". We do have a few problems to fix. Alarmist language is not attractive, especially to recruits. The numerous recruits I've known like to see fan bases that keep their character in tuff times. In case fans haven't noticed....there is a fine line between winning and losing in the SEC and a few changes can make a large difference...good or bad. The sky is not falling, even when we lose to UGA and Bama.

Let's suck it up and get spme class folks.

I am not sure why anyone would think changing the head coach is a must to revive the program. It seems counter intuitive. If you have a proven coach, you don't change things.

For those of you who think Tuberville has to change his staff, I think that is a load of crap too. You either trust Tuberville to make the correct decisions or you don't. I don't believe in dictating changes to a head coach. The reason he is the head coach is because he knows how to make these decisions himself.

1:06 PM

I think speculating over a new coach is harmful to the program. It is too early for that. This seems more of an anomaly. To make long term decisions based upon something that is not yet proven to be a trend is illogical and capricious. A proper cost benefit analysis would reveal that this type of decision is much more riskier with much less chance of success versus allowing a proven coach to make the necessary changes to fix the problem.

What say you Steve?

1:10 PM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

There is no Zen solution, nor is there a Feng Shue solution. The solution is to make honest apprasials and then make hard decisions. That used to be the American way. Loyalty is a two way street. I appreciate CTT being loyal to his assistants. But the assistants have to be loyal to CTT by doing what it takes to win and to do what is in the best interest for Auburn. Maybe they thought that not supporting CTF was in the best interest of Auburn. But CTT thought bringing him in sure was. There might not have willfull disobediance to CTF by his o coaches but there was sure enough passive disobedience to go around.

As Patton once said, at least in the movie. "I may not agree with the order, but once given, I salute and do my damnest to carry it out, like the simple old solider I am. " I don't think that happened with the O this year.
