The Gist of it, 11/18

Hey everyone. The internet is down here at Auburn (again) so I'm posting this on my cellular wireless card I'm supposed to use only in emergencies.

I figure this is a HABOTN emergency.

  • Tommy Trott is out for the next few months with a knee injury. Tuberville said the tight end is scheduled to undergo surgery in Birmingham on Thursday. He may miss some of spring ball.

"He'll be back for some things that he can do," Tuberville said. ``He won't be for all of it. It depends on when we have it. We have it scheduled a little early now but depending on how many, we've had over a dozen surgeries, depending on how many we've had that are able to get back, we'll decide that in January on terms of when we'll do spring ball. I want to have most of them back so we might back it up some."

  • Tuberville had a humorous line during his meeting with reporters. His phone rang. He said it was his wife and he asked for a few seconds so he could text something back to her. Then he came with: "Those that have said my wife has left me, I promise she hasn't. She's still calling. Let me text her and I'll tell her I'll call her back."

There is/was a rumor going around that Tuberville and his wife Suzanne were having marital trouble. I guess that's another rumor you can throw into the unsubstantiated pile.

  • Tuberville said Auburn's recruiting efforts are moving along at least as well as expected: "Recruiting is going fine. It's not affected by losing a few games. As coaches, you'd think it would help mentally a little bit. It really doesn't. A lot of the guys see they may have an opportunity to play a little bit sooner."

I guess moving McKenzie back to TE will be permanent then?

Sucks for Trott - the injury bug has not been kind to AU this year.

That "unsubstantiated" pile seems to be multiplying rapidly these days! I've heard so many things that have turned out to be a whole lot of nothing.

BTW, long time reader, first post. I'll try to jump in the conversation more often.

It does suck for Trott but really I think he contribution was very limited this year. McKenzie played better against UGA than Trott did the whole season. I was discussing this with a friend yesterday and his first words were, who feeds him? I didn;t understand and he said with hands like his, he could not possibly feed himself.

WEG... no, I didn't know that. I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Considering the injuries, the abortive Offensive change of direction, a new defensive coordiantor, winning 5 game up until now, doesn't seem out of the norm, but maybe the norm.

3:12 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Poor CTT. I know I know. They are used to dealing with that sort of thing. But having to tell a room full of people so they can go and tell a bunch of strangers that you and your wife are still together is just wrong.

Welcome convington!

I was wondering if anone can ask Tubbs why they can't move the ball against a defense that lines '8 guys in the box'? I mean, we see it every game and it would seem like the coaching staff should not be surprised and might guess that the next team will do the same thing. Why not possibly come up with a play that can beat this defense?

Thanks, Kristina. I agree with you. Maybe this will put a stop to all that kind of talk. Speculation and rumors are one thing, but when you get a man's family involved, that's way out of bounds.

Regarding the Facebook page, I searched for "The Hottest Auburn Blog on the Net" and got no results. Where do I need to look?

I just started a new part time job and now that I've discovered I can read the HABOTN I've decided to keep it.

Kristina, I totally agree. Wife stuff = off limits and a shame he felt compelled to address it, but nice that he has a sense of humor about it.

Welcome Covington.

Kristina..the "wrongness" that you mention is borne out of some of the fan's neurotic desire to know "everything and now". Inadvertent rumors are spawned and repeated to the point that they are discussed as truth...then taken as truth. Common decencies afforded to friends and acquantances in normal society aren't afforded to the school/team that many profess to "love". It's a symptom of the Jim Rome syndrome.

An example: (BTW, I'm not trying to pick on Eddie), but earlier today he mentioned "something" his brother had heard regarding the PTB limiting the salary amount CTT could pay for a new OC. Within 10-20 posts another AU fan was posting his "concerns" in the present tense as to what this limitation is going do to the AU football program.

The poster inadvertently changed verb tense of the discussion and changed the "declaration". It is now possible for susbsequent posters that didn't read the thread from the beginning to misundertand and carry the rumor forward. Especially when this is then taken to another blog board as in: "I heard on another board that.....is happening".

My daughter and her sorority sisters converse in this manner.

Gee weez Jay G, with all this unsubstantiated rumor and innuendo that some other less responsible people out there are reporting, it sounds like Clark Francis is at work.

Before I join the Facebook group, you guys might want to know that I am primarily a Kentucky Wildcat fan. But, since I moved to Alabama about 8 years ago, I've really started to pull for Auburn (until they play UK, of course) -- especially compared to "that other school" in the state. My wife loves "that other school," but I just can't go down that road.

So, if don't mind letting in a UK fan who likes Auburn as well, I'd love to join.

Can't believe TT mentioned the wifey. Now it moves into the public domain. Huge error. Huge.

Never. never. never.

Unless he's laying the foundation for an ugly departure from AU.

I don't think he's doing that. I just think he said something he shouldn't have.

Having watched Trott in HS, I am stunned. Stunned. His primary ability was catching the ball, in my view. He had a bad habit of holding the ball like an option QB after catching it, but he was a pass catcher ... then he came to AU. Who knew?

It sounded like a comment in passing. No one pressed him about it, he made a joke, beaters laughed, story over. It's not like he just "had to make a statement" or anything. It was a joke. Like that time monica was telling everyone I had rabies. We I went into that gas station and I saw some dude, I told him, "Well, it's pretty obvious I don't have rabies. I'm not even thirsty." He smiled and walked away hurriedly, but anyway, Tubs was just messin about a rumor that is not even really a prevalent rumor at that. Amusing and blog worthy, but no sign of greater problems or things to come or the state of our nation of blah blah aipsdfj alkjflakfj

Nice woman standing off to the side (perhaps Monica): "Will someone please help that poor man?"

Poor Tommy Tuberville... Having to address reporters voluntarily about his wife. Then he has to jump in a $40,000 truck, head to a million dollar house and contemplate whether he should head to Lake Martin to stay at his other million dollar house for the weekend. Oh the things these coaches have to go through.

Does anyone really think Muschamp will be an assistant for 8 more years? That just isn't very common these days for someone as popular as him.

While I understand it's likely the minority opinion in these parts (and I've got no problem with holding and defending a minority opinion), I consider it a shame and a missed opportunity that Boom won't be coaching here next year.

And I believe all along that he would be ... based on very little knowledge, but a lot of historical evidence of behavior of the PTB.

It's a winner for Boom, and I think it will be for Texas. Lord have mercy, I just hope we've got a better plan for next year than we've had for this one and several others outside of 2000, 2002, 2004-05.

Muschamp has some bumpy days ahead of him.

He's not ready to be the Texas or Auburn head coach right now. He's just not.

4:31 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know much about SEC basketball, but maybe Rick Pitino being at Louisville is starting to have an effect on UK. He's getting some good recruits, I know that.

I will probably get the banhammer for saying that.

4:31 PM
Blogger CovingtonTigerFan said...

I don't think the decline of UK bb has much to do with Pitino being at Louisville (though I admit, I will ALWAYS be a fan of Pitino!). From the outside looking in, it seems to be a combination of Tubby Smith not being very effective at either recruiting or coaching during his last few years, and also the INTENSE style of Coach Gillispie. It's not unsual for him to run a 45-minute war of a practice on the day of a game (he did so the day of the VMI game). That's got to be a big adjustment for some of these kids.

I'm sure there are other factors. But all of that said, there's still no excuse for losing to VMI at Rupp... (it still hurts to say that).

4:42 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

When UK loses a game in 2030, I'll blame Tubby Smith.

Jay, I am assuming we will ban all Bama fans if Bama wins the Iron Bowl, correct? I mean, I don't want to discriminate, but maybe .... ah, okay, they should stay as long as they don't mention the number 12 or 13. That should be ground for immediate banning.

5:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I can't believe the $900,000 salary Muschamp will be receiving. I mean, in reality he is still just the DC. That salary is higher than some SEC head coaches.

5:12 PM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

I think they have lost their mind in Texas. They really have. Muschamp is unproven and not ready for the responsibility. Additionally, I think he is too thin skinned to be a head coach. The maturation process better really get moving in a hurry for him to be ready.

5:17 PM
Blogger CovingtonTigerFan said...

Jay, I'm with you on Tubby. Great guy, but the last few years it just didn't seem like his heart was in it.

FSJ, every time I'd watch a UK game during Tubby's last few years, it looked like David Hobbs was doing more coaching than Tubby was. So maybe I can blam a few Kentucky losses on him as well...

Steve, can't argue with that logic! If you guys will let Bama fans on board, there are indeed no boundaries. :)

Denny, I didn't actually go to HS in Kentucky. I'm from Arkansas. Never liked Ale81, but Taco Tico was a regular stop. Last time I was in Versailles, though, it was closed and some other Mexican restaurant had opened where it used to be. I do miss the Bluegrass! BTW, thanks for the link. Nice.
