Paul Rhoades said last night losing Savage really hurt him this year. He said Savage was going to be his play caller. That was reason #1 that he was going to play in front of McFadden.

That is a pretty incredible list and a good indication of why the defense is now having issues.

So, 9 would-be starters are hurt, if I counted right. That's rarely a good thing.

And most of them healthy for the first time vs Bama. Might be a game.

I thought for sure Walt was down and done yesterday. That Ole Miss guy went after his knees. There were two illegal blocks by Ole Miss on that play. The one on Walt that wasn't called was flagrant.

Seems when things are not going well the injury list gets longer & longer. Injuries will surely contribute to poor results, we just never hear about them in good times.

Do more injuries = losses or
losses = more injuries

I think its some of both...

4:40 PM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

Snake bit. Plain and simple. No other way to explain it. The pressure's always on the QB this year.

Also added Josh Bynes, who allegedly has a "deep thigh bruise." That was Tuberville's assessment.

I just realized this could almost be a list of the starting lineup on defense.

I'm glad Slaughter caught those passes. Just b/c he caught passes doesn't mean he did a good job or is a go to guy. He still catches the ball in his bread basket with alligator arms. He still doesn't aggressively come back to and fight for the ball like Rod Smith does(watched the game film before church this am).

I'm glad CTT called it like it is.....role player. If he will commit to getting better..watch some Courtney Taylor film and learn, then he can be better. He will still only run a 4.6 or 4.7 40, but he will then be someone you can "go to".

5:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The injury list was bad before this game and of course it affects play. This is as bad as I can remember. Note to fans: Broken bones, rolled ankles and injuries from clips, etc. aren't a conditioning problem. The lick that AC took on the side of his helmet wasn't a conditioning problem. Muscle pulls...maybe so.

I am surprised and glad to see that Kodi is not running the ball nearly as muchas I had predicted. My guess was that he would get hurt b/c of excessive running.

5:44 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hoopie, you make a very good point. Over the last few years I have seen way too many interceptions that could have been avoided if the receiver was agressive.

5:46 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I think some coaches need to go visit Texas Tech and how they coach WR's how to run routes and catch. I don't think I saw a TT WR catch a ball in the breadbasket. The seemed to all catch it in their hands.

There were outstanding catches by many WR's lastnight by TT. It was fun to watch.

A UGA fan came up to me after church today lamenting that maybe it was time for Richt to go b/c he can't beat Fla regularly. Of course she will openly admit that although she has a strong opinion on the matter, she doesn't know football very well. I laughlingly suggested that she was a perfect candidate to post her opinions/musings in strong declarative statements anonymously on the internet blogs. Her husband, a close friend and co-host of our annual AU-UGA game pig roast was ready to smack me b/c she was intrigued with the idea.

Ah...the power of the written word.

Actually, Hoopie, conditioning reduces the chance of injuries other than just "pulled muscles". Proper conditioning creates stronger connective tissues, increases bones density and increases flexibility. All of which makes a player less susceptible to breaks and fractures AND "pulled muscles".

Just saying.

Richt's teams play smart schemes, but aren't typically as tuff in the trenches and normally have more injuries than we do. They have averaged losing 2-3 OL each of the past 4 seasons. Not sure Richt would last very long with some of the AU fans.

UGA is a lot easier place to recruit to than AU. Not sure Richt could recruit to AU as well as UGA.

OK, Mon..take a good look at T Blackmon and tell me how his lack of muscle caused the broken wrist bone.

Actually a better idea would be for you help me out and ID the injuries that were caused by a lack of conditioning. Please name the player and the play and how the lack of conditioning caused such. I've been watching for this most of the year b/c folks complain and I can't seem to find examples.

With regard to the injuries, tired players are more likely to get injured. I think that has a lot to do with the defensive MASH unit we have now.

As for receivers learning to catch with their hands rather than their body, I suggest egg toss contests at the next practice. The ones that catch with their bodies will be pretty obvious.

6:28 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Hoopie, my comment was targeted at your over generalization when you said, "Note to fans: Broken bones, rolled ankles and injuries from clips, etc. aren't a conditioning problem." I did not say poor conditioning is the cause of EVERY injury. That would be a silly generalization on my part.

However, if you want to send the conditioning logs and x-rays of the aforementioned players I'll do my best to help you out.

6:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I didn't say "EVERY" injury...so let's don't play the generalization card or w'll be here all night. The subject started with someoune (as usual) questioning if the AU rash of injuries were caused by a lack of conditioning. I tried to explain simply and without dissertation and a host of qualifications.

If you don't think that the AU injuries are caused by poor conditioning, then no need to discuss further. If you do, then please list some of them. You have watched the games like all of us. No need to see x-rays. Game film is much more revealing.

6:40 PM
Blogger scottatl said...

Its not the conditioning, even though we arent good, we are still physical

6:41 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I say we make the players drink more milk. That will solve some of injury problems.

6:44 PM
Blogger Monica said...

You can't simply look at the injury and know if conditioning was a factor without knowing that players conditioning. By the way, if game film is enough you could sure help save on team medical costs by not bothering with those pesky x-rays, mri's and other scans.

6:44 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I didn't say our problem was conditioning. What I did way was that Hoopie's "Note to fans" was wrong.

6:46 PM
Blogger scottatl said...

The NFL has the greatest conditioned athletes on earth. Check out their injury lists week to week. Very long lists.

6:47 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

AU "generally" plays very aggressive football. The UGA fans I know expect more injuries when playing AU and LSU. That street runs both ways. The lick that AC took to the side of the helmet wouldn't have happened if he had not been flying to the tackle. He was hit by another AU player as they both got to the runner just as the runner was pulled down.

A Miami Dolphins RB has stated that the conditioning/play at AU prepared him as well as possible to play in the NFL.

Rather than look at conditioning logs now, lets just ask any AU fans to not speculate about lack of conditioning unless they have the evidence that Monica has outlined. I think that Coach Yox has earned the privilege of not being subjected to random uninformed, speculation.

I hate to make the comparison, but AU of 08 is playing out like Bama of 03. Tremendous number of injuries and a losing season.

Obviously that is pessimistic, so let me say, I think we can come around and beat UGA. They are not very good in some cases. We have to get our starters back.

TT beat the #1 team, but remember this was Texas' 4th top ten team in a row. My guess is that if both teams are rested, Texas would beat TT. So Penn St. has an off week and slips in the rankings..huh. I couldn't find the rankings on the ESPN site, where did the computers have TT compared to Penn St?

I would probably have Penn St as #2. TT has only played one tuff opponent other than Texas. If TT wins the next 2 games(OK and OK St.), then maybe they should be #2.

Uh-oh....here comes more logic: If TT doesn't win the next 2 games, then Penn St will be #2 anyway....sooooo does it really matter?

Let's look at my season in the 80s,
80 national championship
81 made tourney after starting the season 2-7
82 final four
83 final four
84 not so good 24-11 but sweet sixteen ( I think Lebo would take that)
85 19-18 (key injuries to Milt Wagner (season ending), Jeff Hall, and Billy Thompson), but went to NIT final four.

86 National Championship.

Point is that injuries have the most to do with anything.

You want to know why the defense is struggling, look at the injury report.

CTT has earned some slack given his way this season.

Granted he did burn a ton of goodwill last year. That I am afraid is getting him now.

Going into the season, while we were exiled from blogger.com by the advertiser (the chillier days of the HABOTN), I told jay who i thought the most irreplaceable (who we had to have play well and not get hurt) players on our team were and I asked who he thought. Our lists were pretty much the same but we'll go with his.

1. Lee Ziemba
2. Jerraud Powers
3. Sen'Derick Marks
4. Jason Bosley
5. Wes Byrum

(I had etheridge instead of byrum)

Not one of those players have played up to their standards for injury reasons or just poor preformance reasons.

So coaching is by no means good these days but it's not the only problems we are having.

Hotties,

This is from frequent Gridiron Breakdown guest Will Shelton of Southeastern Sports Blog about Tennessee's Eric Berry. I thought it was fun and wanted to pass it along.

Eric Berry could intercept a nuclear missile and other thoughts, with apologies to Chuck Norris and Jack Bauer, in their appropriate football context in an attempt to brighten the dark times.

- 1/4 of earth is covered by land. Everything else is covered by Eric Berry

- Eric Berry is suing MySpace for infringing on what he calls everything around him.

- There is no "ctrl" button on Eric Berry's computer, because Eric Berry is always in control.

- For every action there is an equal an opposite reaction. Except a hit by Eric Berry, for which there is no equal.

- There are no Eric Berry jokes. Only Eric Berry truths.
