The Big Board: Men

Something I'd like to do here is update you somewhat regularly (maybe every two weeks?) on how all Auburn sports are doing.

I know you're probably not interested in the minute details of the tennis team, for instance, but my guess is you're willing to invest five seconds to see how they're doing in a general sense. Since Jay Jacobs says he's striving to make Auburn the nation's "pre-eminent athletics department", let's take a peek at Jacobs' progress.

Here's your glance:

FOOTBALL
2008 final record: 5-7 (2-6 in SEC games)
2008 finish: tied for 4th in SEC West
Next game: A-Day game, 3/28/09

BASKETBALL
2008-09 record: 5-4
2008-09 rank: none
Next game: @ Virginia, 12/20

BASEBALL
2008 final record: 28-28 (11-19 in SEC games)
2008 finish: 5th in SEC West
2009 opener: vs. Elon, 2/20/09

CROSS COUNTRY
2008 final record: Finished 5th at the NCAA Championships in November
2008 final rank: 13th
2009 opener: tba

GOLF
2008-09 record: 23-28-1
2008-09 rank: none
Next match: John Burns Intercollegiate (Wahiawa, Hawaii), 2/18/09

SWIMMING & DIVING
2008-09 meet record: 2-0
2008-09 rank: 8
Next event: vs. Texas, 1/8/09

TENNIS
Fall season record: 11-13 (4-7 in SEC matches)
Fall finish: 4th in SEC West
Spring season opener: Auburn Spring Classic, 1/23/09

TRACK & FIELD
2008 final outdoor record: Finished tied for 2nd at NCAA Championships
2008 final outdoor rank: 2nd
2009 outdoor opener: at Georgia Tech, 3/27/09

Thanks, Eddie. I'm glad to hear Mary Mac's still open. I used to work in midtown, but now I work out of my home in Dunwoody. I'm glad to hear she's still around. Do you still fill out your own order ticket?

In appalachia, or parts of East TN, KY, West By God Virginia, and PA, they use the word 'you ins' instead of y'all or you all. Appalachian speak, though southern sort of sounding, is not.

In Central Kentucky area called the Bluegrass where I lived, you could tell a difference from just traveling 30 or so miles.

Monica ... can you verify ...

West BG Va. relatives of Mrs. Jet have the annoying habit of saying, "You're going to the grocery, are ya?

Sounds like my Aunt from Pittsburgh's habit of saying "gazinta" for "goes into".

astatguy- yepp, still fill out your ticket. Have you ever ate at Six Feet Under?

That is a place worth trying out.

Denny...I've heard "You-ins" in north Georgia and "You-ans" in Pittsburgh, Pa.

I think it is funny how yankees make fun of southern words that are still commonplace and that are still commonplace in much of Great Britain and Austrailia, e.g. reckon and yonder. I reckon that is a better price to pay for a car. I looked at that hill over yonder.

Pittsburgh is in the appalachian and so is N. Ga. Let me add N. Ga to my list. I knew a lieutenant in my unit that was from Pittburgh and he used you ins.

"yousta" ... Go down the Boulevard where Lowe's used to be.

"use guys" -- new york, jersey, rhode island for ... you guys.

Chizik sounding great on the radio.

I must say I've never heard "you'ins" in West Virginia. Also, I'm not familiar with the "...are ya?" phrase from Jet. Though I've been in 50 of the 55 WV counties where I spend most of my time border Ohio and KY. So, not sure...

Chizik did GREAT on JOX.

Chizik did a good job on JOX, however they didn't really ask too many in depth questions.

ok, is there some other type of pen that uses an alternate liquid?

The You Ins phrase is from South Central Ky, East Tn, I would guess a part of West by God Virginia than where you are living. I haven't heard it used in Boyd or Greenup county in KY.

Eddie, I haven't eaten at Six Feet Under, but I'm dieing to eat there. LOL

Here's the story on Mary Mac's: Mary Lupo sold it and retired to live with her daughter in Serenbee. It's still open with new management. My wife (Ms. Atlanta Woman about Town) filled me in at lunch.

Did you know the guy who started Serenbee was an owner of the Peasant chain?

12:30 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Up here they say "pop" when we would say "coke".

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Did not know that astatguy. Six Feet Under is on Memorial drive across from Oakland Cemetary (hence the name). It is a great seafood place. Give it a try if you are downtown.

Thanks Mon. I'll have some Diet Pop.

12:38 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I don't even drink diet pop anymore! sigh

Water and fake tea.

Fake tea = Big K Kookers Diet Lemon Tea(Kroger) non carbonated, sugar free, caffeine free.

Yep, brown water.

Denny Crum, not all parts of PA say "you ins." Some parts say "youze." I, myself, say "you guys."

BTW - I take offense to all the Yankee talk! ;-)

Blogger Denny Crum said...

I know they don't I just said parts of PA. More closely related to appalachia is what I meant. It was not an end all be all.

Just remember, in an animated conversation South of the Tennessee river, "Self" is ALWAYS prefixed with "Damn", as in "Do it your Damn Self-Service" and "I'll do it my DAMN Self!"
