The crew returns from Ft. Worth

Hey everyone. Here's why I couldn't do the campfire today:

Jay Jacobs and several of his athletic department associates landed at AUO around 5:45 p.m. after a day-long trip to Ft. Worth, Texas. That just happens to be where Texas Christian University is located.

ESPN.com, citing anonymous sources, reported earlier today that TCU coach Gary Patterson was expected to be interviewed.

I think it's fair to say that was a credible report.

Jacobs' party included two people I'd consider part of the department's inner circle: Mark Richard and Tim Jackson. Quentin Riggins, the former Auburn player and sideline reporter for the Auburn ISP Sports Network, also was part of the party. He's not someone I expected to see. Jacobs said other people would be part of the search process, though, and Riggins is a credible guy in my book.

Riggins said he couldn't comment when approached just off the tarmac. This was a paparazzi-style rush.

They departed this morning at 5:44, so they spent approximately eight hours in Ft. Worth.

PLANE TRICKY: Auburn's jets were quietly in the hangar for this trip. Jacobs & Co. flew on an 8-passenger jet registered to Warren Manufacturing. That's a Birmingham-based company that sells agricultural vehicles and trailers. The connection isn't clear to me.

IS THE PRESIDENT AROUND?:
Rather than walk away from the plane like normal civilians, Jacobs & Co. decided to get all secretive. An assistant ferried an SUV from the parking lot, pulled the truck alongside the airplane on the tarmac and the passengers all but dived into the vehicle. You'd think this was President Bush in a Somalian hot zone.

Ok I just read this about Patterson:

"Im told that Patterson can be Mike Leach-like in interviews; an unusual personality, with some rough edges and some eccentricities. Pattersons rather vanilla offense might not play as well in the ACC as it does in the Mountain West. His recruiting is very much Texas-based, which could work for or against him if he moves out of the region.. He is almost certainly driven by the opportunity to escape the Poinsettia Bowl level of college football (TCU, as a smaller private school, doesnt travel well to bowl games). A job in the ACC or even in the SEC solves that wish."

Vanilla offense? Limited recruiting? I think I'm going to be sick.

Facts about Saban from P Marshall:

Saban has a good record at Toledo, Michigan State, LSU and Alabama. He won two SEC championships and a national championship at LSU, though in both seasons he had home losses to inferior teams. Between those two seasons, he had a five-loss season in which he lost 31-7 to Auburn on the road and 31-0 to Alabama at home. He also has six seasons out of 12 with five losses or more and three with six losses or more. He has won 10 or more games three times.

Been in bed sick. Just read the latest. This seems like a lot of work and secrecy for this to be a smoke screen. I don't think that it is.

No bluebloods in sight? The CTT-haters just figgered it would be real easy to hire a top coach to join our circus. I say fire all of the naysayers for making a mistake. The noisemakers and PTB chased away/fired our best chance to keep up with Nicky. Now we get to start over.

Don't blame JJ....he doesn't make the decisions. Blame yourselves and the PTB.

9:37 PM
Blogger eaglesteeler said...

Jet,

Willis is telling recruits that because the PTB at AU have told him they plan on keeping him regardless who comes in to coach.

It has NOTHING to do with WHO is coming in to coach. I don't think AU has made the FINAL decision yet on a coach.

9:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Again, "phred", I'm not griping at "everyone else" , just the people who are looking at this with the emotional intelligence of your typical Jonas Brothers fan.

That's relatively simple to understand, IMO. I think we have a lot of good choices we could make. Davis, Muschamp, Grobe, Kelly, etc there are a lot of good ones. I'm not smart enough to tell you which one is the absolute best for AU. I just hope the people who make the decisions are not looking at who is oatmeal and who is sexy. That would be tragic.

9:40 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Once he found out he was not coming back to AU, he went off to get another job he was passionate about right?

Loved with all his heart.

Was in his soul?

umm, nope.

Tommy Tuberville was not AU's best chance to keep up with ANYONE.

He resigned.

He was tired and was hpoing to vote agian that the NCAA would help keep him from going out recruiting all the time like NICK SABAN.

Best move we could have made!

It was coming in 1,2 or 3 years ANYWAY!

9:40 PM

Why do I get the feeling that the Gill-Patterson debate kinda like a Kucinich-Gravel debate? It's entertaining for a while until you realize neither one is getting anywhere near the job. At least that's what I think.

This is a simple question. Who is YOUR number one choice?

9:41 PM

9:41 PM

Yeah Hoopie,

How dare Auburn fans expect to put a competent team on the field when their team was projected as a pre-season top ten team.

How dare they expect their HC to go toe to toe with the other top notch coaches in the league in recruiting.

They are just being unrealistic, I am sure.

9:44 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Keith is right. Since fans don't have the capability of deciding who should coach a major divison I school, we should be banned from speculating.

"Phred", This is a relatively simple answer. It doesn't matter who my choice is, or yours. All I want is a well thought out hiring process.

Any simpleton can understand this if they are willing to try. i just gave four good choices and admitted I don't know which one is best. I am not like the people who think I am the smartest guy in the room and have all the answers.

All I want is for people to think with something other than a teenaged hormone driven brain about what's hot, sexy and exciting.

With no support from the PTB and the growing # of ANGRY AU fans, my guess is that CTT knew he couldn't overcome the negative press and hire a good OC and keep recruits.

Bama's huge support for CN$ helps recruiting as much as working 100 hours/week. The recruits want to go where there is harmony. That ain't AU.

From what I read, Nall believes Tubs mother. That "story" that took place during the 1 hour and 40 minutes was probably something akin to...."We're not doing anymore improvements for you".

I've been sick and outta touch....some folks spend to much time in front of their computers and are out of touch.

I want AU to get the best coach we can get. If that's Gill, so be it. It just won't be because he is the "sexiest" hire or because another guy who wins tons and tons of games is "oatmeal".

I don't care if it is Gill, Garner, Patterson, Davis, Moose, or Olive Tuberville. I want the best hiring process we can get perusing the best candidates we can get and taking the best overall look at the candidates, not who is "hot", who is "now", who will get covered for 10 minutes on SportsCenter. Stallings was not sexy, Dye was not sexy, Tubs was not sexy, Richt was not sexy. I want the guy who will be the biggest long term win-win situation for AU. I want people to look at the big picture, not if they think somebody is "vanilla".

That's all.

Cool. I understand what you are saying and I want great recruiting too. I just think there is more to it than that. I don't want another Ray Goff type.

Spoke with a BOT member tonight at a function.
BOT Christmas party is tomorrow night in Auburn.
Will they be getting a big booming present?
I would love to be a fly on the wall at that shin-dig

Keith, I agree there is more to it than that. But if you have 2 coaches of equal talent as far as X's and O's go, but one is sexier/flashier than the other....you go for sexy everytime.

it's like they all said shotgun at the same time. Are you sure we arent being punked? These bunch of Nardowells that are running my University are the problem..it doesnt matter who we hire the result will be the same!

Can you buy tickets?

At this point I'd take Muschamp just to end this circus. At least our D recruits would be the cream of the crop. I wonder what kind of offense he would run? Spread or pro-style?

Thank you Cletus.

On for your next trick.

Krsitina, that makes sense. IF it got to the point where all else was equal. I'm not convinced we are anywhere near that point. Hope it works out that way...

By-God hire an offensive coach and let him run it!

We've had a defensive coach asking an offensive coach to comform to what he wants before, right?

OMG,

here we go again. JAyG, Spurrier, Muschamps? How can these TV stations allow this to happen.

THis sounds like the smoke screen is heating up, don't you?

In fact....forget about college...

That is a life philosophy....

Turner Gill has won 1 conference championship at a school that hasn't SNIFFED one in the past.

Patterson has been at TCU for 8 years and has won 2 at a school that was already up and running when he got there --- in CONF USA and the Mtn West.

Yeah, Gill's better.

My philosophy in college was to go for the ugly ones early, that way you would beat the crowds at the end of the night.

Hey maybe Muschamp and Spurrier will both come and be Co-HCs. We would have one nasty team. It'd give up a few big plays on D but we should be able to light up the scoreboard.

Yes, I have plenty of opinions of my own and I have given them (ad nauseum, i'm sure).

"I think it's safe to say that everyone on here wants the hire that is best for Auburn." Agree.

"So, what's your point? That you disagree with everyone else?" No. i haven't disagreed with ANYONE'S choice, just some people's rationale for their choices("he's VANILLA")

"Okay, then say so. Make a pick and then defend it. That's how we do it around here." No, that's how YOU do it around here. I'm a big believer in Gladwell's theory. if you don't know, say you don't know. Me, I don't know.

He's been on that bandwagon a long time.

Skip the hair in Lowder's soup and just forget to bring him a spoon. Then you can do that gag from Coming to America.

Jay,

Just curious here. Do we actually know for a fact that they met with Patterson, or do we just know that they landed at Dallas/Fort Worth?

You said,

"ESPN.com, citing anonymous sources, reported earlier today that TCU coach Gary Patterson was expected to be interviewed.

I think it's fair to say that was a credible report."

But we don't actually have a statement from TCU or Patterson, do we?
