Friday chatter

Hey everyone. I don't have much to add at this early hour, but I can't let the other thread approach 500 comments without some intervention.

I'm eagerly awaiting today's Duel of TV Sources. WSFA out of Montgomery still is reporting that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier could be Auburn's next coach.

In other news, Pat Dye could be Auburn's next coach. He has won an SEC championship, has top-tier coaching experience and knows this area.

Fox 10 out of Mobile is reporting that Will Muschamp will be named Auburn's coach today. They cite an earlier report from WVUE, a Fox affiliate out of New Orleans, but I cannot find that report on WVUE's web site.

Should be another fun day.

HABOTN RADIO UPDATE:
We'll be hitting the airwaves from noon to 2 p.m. CST this afternoon on Montgomery's WMSP 740. Please listen and call in. All HOTTIES are encouraged to participate. If you make it on the air, I'll lavish you with excessive praise.

TO OUR FRIENDS AT WNSP (Mobile): A quick lesson in airport codes.

The Opelika airport (Robert G. Pitts) is "AUO"
The Austin, Texas, airport (Austin-Bergstrom) is "AUS"

I don't really care who it is. I would hope (however irrationally) that the person we hire will be able to average 10 wins per year, stay in the hunt for Atlanta until the last 2 SEC games most years, get the trip every 3 years or so, and take a BCS birth (Sugar or BCSCG) more than once a decade. That is, I would like a Pat Dye level of success (4 SEC titles in 12 years). Although I'd like a Tuberville-clean program. Not sure you can have both, but that's what I'd like. Whoever can do that, please apply within.

With proper medication, you can imagine anyone (or anything) as the head ball coach at Auburn.

7:49 AM
Blogger tennessee tiger said...

I don't think Spurrier would do that well, unfortunately. I like the guy, but his winging it around the ole ballfield is not that revolutionary anymore. Plus, he doesn't like to recruit and Auburn doesn't just recruit itself (sorry folks). If it did, Tuberville might still have some talent on the Plains. So, much as I like the attitude, I don't think he'd be any more successful here than at Carolina. Good news is -- I really don't believe TPTB are dumb enough to make that hire. And if they are, I at least like Steve-O enough to not freak out, even if I think it's a terrible idea.

Don't blame JJ when this hire doesn't work out. Blame the PTB and the loud negative fans. We can always count on those 2 groups to keep AU football dysfuntional.

Blogger Jim Rome said...

First off Saban won't be around long enough. Second they had a 'magical' season.
Third all of this talk about Auburn having no talent is absolutely foolish. AU had no one "coaching" the players we had. Look at Alabamas O line. They have been a laughing stock for years. Add in some coaching and all of a sudden they are 'talented'. We have talent, now we need coaching.
Today feels like a good day to hire a coach!

8:43 AM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

I don't understand the mentality that says 'we have to hire someone who is a proven BCS conference HC'.

There are about 30-40 HC jobs that are comparable or better than the HC job at AU. With the exception of Penn State and FSU, every one of them has hired at least one HC in the past 10 years.

No more than 10% of those hires have been 'proven BCS Conference HCs'. And most of those have been failures.

Guys like Saban are exceptions that prove the rule.

Jay,

Posed this question yesterday and either you chose not to answer it or never saw it, so I thought I'd try one more time.

Do we know for a fact that the AU team actually met with Patterson, or do we just know that they landed at Dallas/Fort Worth and that ESPN suspected they met with Patterson?

Has there been any official word from Patterson or from TCU regarding this?

Just curious about how firm yesterday info was. As you said, AU doesn't fly a whole team of folks out to meet someone they aren't highly interested in. But the question of who they actually met with still seems to be open, at least from my point of view.

Let me clear up the mystery on the Q's plane trip yesterday.
For ages Jay J has been telling Q about this absolutely fabulous little bistro on the outskirts of Ft Worth. December issue of Southern Living said they had the most delectible cheese grits this side of Bottega, and we all know how much Q loves cheese grits!

Will Muschamp spoke to Tony Barnhardt this morning about his (lack) of interest in the Auburn job.

I actually saw one of the loud bluetooth talkers put one foot on one of the seats, while we all got to hear how "important" he was to his company. What a thrill that was. Eyes staring off in a distance solving megamillion dollar projects while we all got to bask in the glow of his greatness. Geeeee.

I see where someone claims Tuberville wasn't capable of going head to head with Saban. That seems very odd since Tuberville has a winning record against Saban.

This search is very intriguing. I do believe Hoopie is right to a large extent. Some fans as well as the BOT keep Auburn from reaching the next level, but hopefully that will change.

I am also beginning to think this should be a risky hire, such as a Gill. Going after a young up and comer and seeing if they can make things happen. If not, we get a new coach in a year with more top notch candidates available.

It is clear from the candidates that we won't get a coach on Tuberville's level, but that doesn't mean we don't end up with a coach that is better than Tuberville. It just means that they will learn as they go and develop over 3 or 4 seasons.

As I say, get behind whoever the next coach is. Give the guy a fair chance.

Scottie, I have seen several quotes from Muschamp like that. While it is certainly possible he changes his tune for 4 Million reasons, I don't find it likely.

Saban changed his tune. Tuberville changed his tune. It could happen. It is just more likely that Muschamp stays at Texas. Any coach coming to Auburn now will be under a ton of pressure to win. Muschamp is already at a school that is very successful.

Words of Muschamp sent to Rivals:
Texas DC Will Muschamp issued the following statement through a UT spokesperson:

I am not certain of where I see this search headed next. Jim Grobe is a legit candidate.

I just feel it is about the time that Jay Jacobs will call the double reverse to Petrino or possibly Kelly. It could work. Many in the media are overpursuing.

Good post Mr. S. I have seen several comments similar to that supposedly from Muschamp. It is one of the reasons I have considered him our of the running for about 80% of the time out of the last two weeks, but you have to admit he left himself some wiggle room. He should have added until I die. Unless you add the until I die or a reference to a pine box, there is still wiggle room.

Breaking News: In a shocking turn of events, Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs suddenly decided to promote from within and has named Steve Ensminger the new head football coach. We are receiving mixed review from fans. Some are saying "Son of a...", while others are more understanding with a simple "WTF". In a related story, the temperature in hell has reached an all time low.

"I see where someone claims Tuberville wasn't capable of going head to head with Saban. That seems very odd since Tuberville has a winning record against Saban."

That someone was me. And Doug Barfield was 3-3-1 against Bobby Bowden and Vince Dooley.

Where it counts, Saban has 2 SECCs, 3 BCS bowls and a BCS Championship, and has pretty much locked up the state in recruiting. Tubs wasn't going to change that no matter who he had on staff.

I am also beginning to think this should be a risky hire, such as a Gill. Going after a young up and comer and seeing if they can make things happen. If not, we get a new coach in a year with more top notch candidates available.

Wait, you're saying AU will hire Gill (or someone like him) and fire him after the first season
if we don't win immediately?

It is clear from the candidates that we won't get a coach on Tuberville's level, but that doesn't mean we don't end up with a coach that is better than Tuberville. It just means that they will learn as they go and develop over 3 or 4 seasons.

I am saying Auburn should take a young guy and give him a chance. I didn't say get rid of him after a year. I said get rid of him when there is a better candidate available after the new guy is given the chance, which I think means at least 3 or 4 years.

The complainers got what they wanted...a new coach. My prediction is that the complainers will start all over again in 2-3 years. It has become the AU way.

Instead of complaining about coaches....focus on the real problem....stand back and look at the well hidden, meddling force behind our never ending issues. That force will now need to spend a lot of money to buy us out of this latest round of meddling.

Petrino left the Atlanta Falcons immediately after Arthur Blank threatened to start a negative spin compaign against him. More than one CEO has been known to use those type tactics. Fans that hang on every bit or rumor and inuendo play into that scenerio.

Why should a coach stay at a school and try to recruit where the "Mac Daddy" has withdrawn all support and a growing segment of the fans are buying the disinformation?

Question: Why would a "resigning" coach get $5.1 mil?

Answer: Hush money.

I keep seeing quotes from Muschamp saying he will stay at Texas.

'“Where does that stuff come from?” Muschamp said when contacted by AuburnUndercover.com. “It’s not true. I’m staying at Texas.”'

There is always the chance that Muschamp does the Nick Saban thing, but I don't believe it is likely. He is in a very sweet position at Texas.

Those fans who would like to purchase tickets to see the Crimson Tide play in the All-State Sugar Bowl may do so by purchasing directly through the University of Utah.

Click here to go directly to the Utes ticket website.

The University of Utah will hold a public sale of All-State Sugar Bowl tickets today, December 12th, beginning at 11:00am CST.

Hoopie, I agree with a lot of what you say to some extent. While CTT is gone and won't be back, I do hope Auburn will learn from this experience.

There were two things that needed fixing with the Auburn football team. The first was obviously getting an offensive coordinator who could coordinate, which shouldn't have been a problem.

The second thing is what would be more difficult to fix. The issue with Tuberville has always been the frequency of coordinator turnover, whether it be through firing or them leaving to become head coaches. I think Tuberville did well in his selection of Rhoads. I think he would have hung with us for the long haul. The big question would be finding a coordinator that would do the same. We will never know if that would have happened. I do think Borges had the potential to be that guy, although I get the impression he was not assertive enough.

What is to be learned here is that you don't get rid of the entire coaching staff to fix problems in a successful program. It leads to instability, which is likely what we will see in the near term.

The goal should be to get a coach we can stick with, even if we look bad the next 3 or 4 years, and allow him to build a staff that can compete.

It is very easy to get caught in the same head coaching carousel that Bama was in and it has been 25 years or so for them so far. Yes, they have been successful at times, but they have not been a stable program. Whether they will be now is to be seen.

FSJ, how do you feel about Bama playing Utah. I feel like they got screwed just like Georgia did last year. While Penn State gets to play USC and have a valid claim to the NC should they win, Bama is playing someone everybody believes they will destroy. If Bama wins, it doesn't really add to their case of being the MNC.

11:32 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Laz, I wouldn't make too much of it, although I do think Spurrier is a possibility if Auburn wants a short term coach to take us through the next 4 or 5 years. It could happen, but I wouldn't call it likely.

11:35 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

SFC,

I agree..Alabama is in a no win situation. It's like playing S. Miss. You are supposed to win but get no credit for winning. And they are good enough to beat you.

11:37 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

SFC, a comment from Sexton will rarely be seen but his clients have a record(including CTT) of having their names linked to open jobs and then squeezing their present employer for more money. That is how the game is played, but it gets old hearing the coaches deny any knowledge of what is going on behind the scenes. Business is business, but that's why I have little sympathy for coaches who get fired and walk out with millions.

11:39 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

FSJ, I had hoped to see Bama play one of the big 3 from the big 12. That would have made the bowl season much more interesting.
